Welcome to the official HeavyCon 2017 scheduling list! HeavyCon is the convention put on by us, the hosts of the Heavy Cardboard Podcast for fellow fans of the heavier end of the hobby. The convention takes place in Denver, Colorado, over the Memorial Day weekend. The dates this year are May 25-28, 2017. From 8am Thursday up thru midnight Sunday night, it's all-you-can-eat heavier games in the hobby (18xx, war games, heavy Euros, etc). While the convention is by invitation only, you can always reach out to us and be put on the waitlist for subsequent years.

This list is here for any attendees that wish to post & organize games prior to arriving at HeavyCon. By starting this list a few months in advance, players can start reviewing rules, assign players to specific countries/characters/etc.

Got an 18XX, a wargame, or a Phil Eklund game that you've been dying to have hit the table? How about that game of Die Macher or Fire in the Lake you've always wanted to try? This list is for you!

Please also use this list to coordinate informal teaching/learning games for newbies as well.

Organization of the Geeklist

The games are listed in ALPHABETICAL order so that you can scroll down the list and see if a game you want to play is being organized or not. If it is, you can post a comment showing your interest. If it's not, you can Add an Item and put your game on the list.

It is also usually a good idea to Subscribe to the specific games you are interested in playing, rather than the entire list. This way, you will be notified when there is a post to the specific games you want, rather than all games and comments.

For particularly organization-heavy games in which players, roles, and other stuff must be handled prior to the con, it might be good to have several entries of a game. You can look at previous years' lists here:

HeavyCon 2015 Scheduled Games

HeavyCon 2016 planning/organizing!

How to Post

Some useful information to include in game listings:

Game Title (added via the Geeklist Item)
# of Players
Day/Time to Meet (This will likely be TBD until we get closer to the Con)
Expected Playing Time (Duration)
Requested Experience Level of Players (i.e. Beginners welcome, Expert, etc.)

Mules

If you are willing to bring a copy of a needed game, please do! Many of the games on this list may be scarce, but we have a lot of locals that have good sized libraries that will be willing to bring games. Obviously, more obscure titles may require a Mule. If you are a local to Denver, supplies such as plexiglass, poker chips, etc. are greatly appreciated.

Requesting a Game

If you aren't planning to host a specific game, but would like to still help get it organized, please REPLY in the comments section at the bottom of the geeklist your desire for playing a certain game. You should have pretty good success getting someone willing to set up a game if there is enough interest for that particular title.

(thanks to my buddy Patrick for the guideline to follow)

There's been a lot of talk about this on the channel and I'd loooove to play.

Adding this entry to round up a 5-player game. I realize it supports more but I'd like to start with a middle number rather than jump straight to the upper end.

At the current time my plan is to ask one of the locals (I believe at least 3 people in the area have it?) to let us use their copy. If that does not pan out I will look into bringing mine.

I have not played before and am leaving one spot open for a teacher. If you are interested in teaching please say so.

Edit: Times have been updated to start & end a little earlier.

Please plan on ~7 hours for a game with several new players. Current planned times are:

Thursday:

3:30: gather & set game up
4:00: start teaching
4:45: start gaming
11:30: signal The End Is Nigh
12:00: hard stop @ midnight, thank you all for playing

There will be a food break in there somewhere, please figure we'll order in or something quick-ish like that.

Phew, enough preamble!

Board Game: 1837: Rail Building in the Austro-Hungarian Empire
Okay no need to fight it anymore. All 18xx all the time. This is Lonny Orgler's mangiun opus - a seven course meal. 1837 is set in the Austria-Hungian Empire and features coal companies, minors, majors, and 3 national companies. 1837 supports 3-7 players and can be quite long. NOTE: this is a newbie-friendly game! I'll be teaching if needed, but I'm relatively new to 18xx myself. Let's keep it at four players. Plan on 4-5 hours max (we'll call it if we're going too long). Guessing experienced players will want to look elsewhere for some real competition.

This is a game about running trolly companies in Cleveland before/during/after the great depression. It is a super unique 18XX title that has a very different feeling to any other I have played. You feel the depression crush you and you just hope to come out the other side. Playtime 3-4 hours maybe 5 with teaching.

Some basic 18XX experience would be good for this. It is a very unforgiving one and you end up losing a company pretty easily if you don't know what to watch for. You can lose one even when you know what to watch for as well anyway lol.

Date/Time: Friday Evening Based on advice here is the plan. Gather and set up at 4:30. Teaching of game at 5:00. Break for supper which is a catered supper I was told. Play after eating so maybe around 6:30-7:00.

Lonny sent Edward a copy of 18CZ - and I am assigned to teach it. I'll host two sessions. Here's a chance to play the newest from the creative mind of Lonny Orlger, and you won't have to wait until October for your KickStarter copy to be delivered!

If you're interested, indicate which session you want when you comment. Sorry that this is "next to what is next to the last moment".

Here's a taste of what's in store in this title:

The game works on a fix number of rounds. Should be about 5 hours.
* Initial sale of Localbahns
* 8 stock rounds (before the last 7 of these stock rounds, a train is exported)
* 13 operating rounds (starts with 1 between stock rounds, then 2 and finally 3 for the last operating set).

LocalBahns - Like private companies. They pay revenue and have special powers, but they come in three sizes with the flexibility of the special powers increasing with size. Of course, the cost and income also increase.

Small, Medium and Large Share Companies - They are 4-, 5- and 10-shares respectively. The companies, in accordance with their size, can own certain sizes of trains and slightly different train limits. There are 5 of each size available.

Company Acquisition - A company can be purchased by a larger company, if both directors are willing. This is how companies get more tokens. This is not to say that a "medium company" will become a "large company", that's not the case. A medium company can buy a small company but it remains a medium company - which could be bought by a large company.

Train Roster - Since each card depicts three different trains (one for each size of company) the way in which trains come off of the deck could be very interesting in what trains are available for a given company size.

FRIDAY 9AM

I need time to get down there. I'm local and not staying at the hotel. Rush hour traffic, yucky...

This is another run at the title. Probably should not be your very first XX game, but, I always welcome those new and newish to the genre. Any heavy gamer can handle these games, don't be shy.

Ireland. This is a financially tight game about creating larger railroad companies from the merger of two or three small railroad companies. The mergers don't always go your way, the train rush is there, but it isn't evil. The map develops differently according to the order in which the small companies become available. The tile set is pretty restrictive. The stock market is often alive. The rules say "bankruptcy stalks you", well, it does.

Since we can assume there will be a copy there let's set up a game for experienced players. I think Saturday is a good day but if anyone else has a better idea we can go with that.

Even though the Geeklist item is of the first edition this will actually be a prototype of Bios Megafauna 2nd Edition. I am helping play test it and Phil Eklund gave me permission to bring it over to the con and get more feedback and opinions. Play time for first edition is 60-120 minutes so we can assume around that for this one. I will adjust time after a couple runs in the next week or so.

Day/Time: Saturday 8:00am

First one says best at four so lets go with that.

1. Andrew Denison
2. Mark von Minden
3. Grayson
4. Chris Longstreet

Time of game: 2-3 hours

OK, I realize I'm opening myself up to a heapin' slice of humble pie, but I fancy myself a very good Brass player! I'm challenging three others who consider themselves "Sharks" as well! If interested, please post a couple times/dates that are open, and I'm sure we can find the two hours to throw down!

So, I want to learn Clinic. Anyone willing to teach me the game. I have read the rules a few times, and they have yet to gel. Maybe low player count game since it is a learning game? I am more than willing to play multiple games in a row too (unless I hate it), so learn then plays for "reals."
