About 6 months ago I posted this geeklist: Cutting down from 300 - A follow up 3 months later.... Which was a reflection on this list: Cutting down from 300 - The games that will stay in my collection and why.. I had a friend ask me how things were going now that it has been 6 months since I was having all of those warm, fuzzy feelings about cutting my collection way down. So, I thought it appropriate to respond via geeklist.

Short backstory: Basically about a year ago I started feeling overwhelmed by how many games I owned. I couldn't remember the rules to most of them, and had a hard time teaching or getting them played. So, I cut my collection way down (take a look at the above links). I hung out with my selected collection for 3 months and decided that it was still too much and cut a few more games. Now 6 months later, I have gotten rid of even more games and am still very content! I play the games I own often and really enjoy them. I can teach anything in my collection fairly quickly. I still attend a bi-weekly board game group where I can play lots of new stuff. I also play a good bit of games online. I love this hobby more than ever, and I feel I have hit a sweet spot of owning games I love and getting out to meet new people and play new games. I understand this philosphy is not for everyone and I am in no way shaming people who own lots of games. This is just what I needed to enjoy the hobby more.

Now, time to evaluated what has happened in my collection over the last 6 months.

A few more games have left my collection since my last evaluation. They are listed below:

Mage Knight w/ Every Expansions
Agricola
The Manhattan Project
Saint Petersburg
The Castles of Burgandy
Nexus Ops
The Grizzled
VivaJava: The Coffee Game: The Dice Game
Isle of Sky From Chiefton to King
Medici
New York 1901
Paperback
New Bedford + Expansions
Martian Dice
Biblios

All of these are awesome games, and I would play any of them if you asked me to. The truth is they just never got played, so even though I love them, there is not point in owning them if I don't play them or have the right group of people to play them with.

A lot of games are still in my collection from last time though! These are the ones I am still loving even after giving them repeat plays in the last 6 months:

Le Havre
Concordia
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small + Expansions
Akrotiri
Colossal Arena
Small World Base Game + Royal Bonus (I have sold all of the other expansions)
Patchwork
Morels
Smash Up w/ all expansions
Trias
Ticket to Ride and a few maps
Rampage
Bohnanza
Dixit
Carcassonne and many expansions
Coloretto
No Thanks!
Catan + Expansions
Arboretum
Friday
A Fake Artist Goes to New York
High Society
Hive Pocket
Animal Upon Animal
Loopin' Chewey
Love Letter: Batman
Rhino Hero
Codenames
Blokus
*The last few went unsold in my auctions and have actually gotten some play, so they are staying for now!

As you can see many of these have a simple ruleset, but offer deep gampley. Others are easy to learn for nongamers and a few are heavy. This represents the people I play with most offen and what my gaming habbits actually are, thought I wish I played more heavy games, this is my life and thats ok .

So in light of getting rid of some games, I have picked a couple up as well. However, instead of blind buying games, I am now playing them a few times before making a purchase.

The first one I bought was Great Western Trail. This has quickly become one of my favorite games. Right up there with Le Havre and Concordia. The theme, fluidity between mechanisms, and multiple strategies available make this one a perfect fit for me and for my collection.

Played this at a friends meet up a few weeks ago. It is just so different than anything else I have played I decided I needed to pick up a copy and try it out some more. I have played it a few times since and it is growing on me a good bit.

I played this a lot in college. I found it used for a decent price so I decided to pick it up again. I have played it a few times since and remembered why it is such a great game. Not sure I will keep it with how easy it is to play online. However, a few people I know play it often so it could see some playing time.

Plays short and fast, yet offers stratigic decisions. Also, I love small box games that play well with two .

Grabbed this micro worker placement game. It is surprisingly good for what it is, a perfect game to stay in my car.

Another small card game. A very interesting and intriguing design for sure. So far it has been a hit with a few groups.

I have always wanted to play a Pax game and it seems this is one of the best ones yet. Not sure it will get played a lot, so it may leave the collection in time.

The only game I have boughten on a whim. Mostly to support a local designer and because of the unique theme. Well, I paid the price. The gameplay is lacking...and I have since put this on my trade list.

All in all, I can say that I feel freerer in this hobby after refining my board game selection. Ideally, I would own a bajillion games and play them everyday. But you know there's work and a kid and a wife that all take up my time...so that doesn't happen. I have grown very content playing the games I have, and taking the opportunities I can to get to meet ups and play some new games. This is a snapshot of my collection here and now and after 9 months of shrinking my connection I am still happy I made the change.

Happy Gaming!
