This month I'll finish this project, as "I'm going on an adventure"!

It is a complete experiment:

I'm taking a modified rules version of Ganesha's High Stakes (actually something I was working on and off every now and then, but High Stakes came pretty close, so I'm using most of HS in my rules) as a basis.

A basis to literally choose my own adventure. Not an adventure, someone else has written, but MY OWN adventure.

Throwing in a printed version of the The GameMaster's Apprentice.
Printed on linen paper and glued to 1mm cardstock.
Not exactly my brightest idea, but - hey - at least I've got sturdy cards now...

For overland exploration, I'll use this guide:
http://www.welshpiper.com/hex-based-campaign-design-part-1/

For dungeon exploration, I'll use a modification of Pocket Dungeon.

To track my progress and my maps, I'll use this here:
http://cloud.catzeyes.de/index.php/s/kOTOxcyTWdy6g4A
The map in the front is the "big map", the following pages are the "sub maps" of each "big map"'s hex as well as maps for dungeons.
The "headers" on each "sub map" are used to write the "big map"'s hex number in. The 7 hexes below show the current "big map"'s hex as well as the surrounding hexes.
The Notes area ... well .. is for notes ...

Let's see, how this works out

Lots of boxes for me, not so much PNP:

Carcasonne

Making a long GeekElite box for this one to save shelf space. I have the graphics wrap printed, just need to build the box. Credit for the painting and the hand-lettering goes to the amazing kawnchai, I just rearranged everything to match my other boxes (link to original).

Lanterns: the Harvest Festival

Will be making a long GeekElite box for this one. Watch this space.

Glory to Rome

Getting some cards printed through PrinterStudio: mainly corrections for my misprints on the previous version, but also three or four cards from the BGG expansion (the ones that looked good to me) as well as mini-camps and the Imperium version.

Will be making a long GeekElite box for this one. Watch this space.

Two Rooms and a Boom
My original design (PrinterStudio cards) has gotten a lot of play but I wanted new roles and also a clearer design as some problems cropped up in play, mainly from text readability and the color-share icons at the top. I whipped up these replacements, printed them on double-sided cardstock and sleeved. Quick project, took about an hour.

I feel the Russian civil war theme is even stronger with these colorized photographs and more thematic roles! Best yet, these are all public-domain photographs so I just need to get credit from the colorizer and I could no doubt share the files -- which I will be doing

Kolejka
Ordered some meeples for this one, but they'll need to be sanded and painted because they're currently black and need to be five colors. But they were on sale! Also picked up some locomeeples for Trains: Rising Sun while I was at it (thanks PrintPlayGames!)

April 6: No Thanks
Whippped up some rainbow no thanks cards (inspired by dennis the badger's redo) but with some sweet patterns in the background. Here's a preview:

Best part is I think I can share these files since there's no artwork other than the free patterns I used!

On My Radar
We'll see how much time I have, but at least one or two from my 'to-craft' list:
Hive, Haze Islands, Fireball! Fireball! Fireball!, San Juan, No Thanks!, Peak Oil, and The Great MicroGame

Well, looks like I'm #2...

(From my SGOYT entry...)

I think I'm a Scott Almes fan... I have most of the Tiny Epic games (or do I have all of them?) even the Tiny Epic Harbour. This is a game currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. The PnP files are offered up without pledging. The game has no stated solo mode, so I made the effort to build the PnP and see if it might be worth a pledge.

My vote: thumbsup

Here's the PnP:

The only difference I can tell is the use of different colors for the dice. The ones in the game are white, lt. blue and dk. blue. It took a bit to convert to the PnP colors, and then it was off.

The PnP is a bit more than others to build. The hexes require a number of cuts to get out. But it's not horrid. A few hours with a break for lunch was what it took me. I just glued the dice faces to some 1/2" wood cubes I have. I should have sanded the edges & corners- the flat cubes don't roll too well.

The game is quick to set up. Building the mountain is easy. There are 2 extra hexes for each level. Just shuffle a level and deal out that number of hexes. The three summit tiles go on top.

I played two players- the PnP supports 4, the game supposedly will support 6. No differences between players other than color. I went with a "conservative" mindset for one, "aggressive" for the other. And after a few turns, promptly forgot who was what...whistle

You get 5 dice to roll. Any combo of colors. This is how you influence your rolls. One set (red in the PnP) is more for climbing (50% of the faces have the climb symbol) while the other 4 dice set (blue in the PnP) is mainly for resting (again, 50% of the faces for rest). The 5 dice set (white in the PnP) is balanced- 2 climb, 2 rest and then one each of the other two. The other two are an avalanche symbol and a Yeti symbol. The monster, not the cooler.

Three avalanches and you bust. Nothing happens. Three Yetis, you don't move, but the other players do. Only got three avalanches once. You do have to "call out" what you are attempting to do- climb or rest. That determines which dice "lock" and can't be rerolled. Yetis always lock.

As you climb, you turn over the hexes you stop on. Most have some event you do- move forward, move backward, use oxygen, etc. Being first means you get to uncover the path for the others. You can try to plan your climbs to avoid hexes you don't want to land on. And you have to manage your oxygen as you climb- which means choosing to rest at times.

It was quick- maybe 20 minutes for me to set up and play. That's with two- I can imagine 6 would take an hour or so. Here's the end:

I've already done a bit of thinking about a more active Yeti in a solo game. I have Avalanche at Yeti Mountain and having a Yeti show up would make things a bit more interesting. But I'm not sure how best to do that without adding a bunch of extra overhead. A little more research is needed.

{UPDATE:}

I've PnP'd several solo game games from the The 2017 9-card Nanogame PnP Design Contest!, which is currently running. There are more than just solo games- so go check out the list. Most of the games could use another playtester or two and there even games for 3+ players. All on 9 cards...

My project for this month is a redesign of Onirim (second edition) as a tile drawing game. Why? Because it's much easier to shake a bag or stir a bowl than to shuffle a deck. And Onirim requires a lot of shuffling...

I have laid out all the cards as 24mm x 24mm tiles. The base game of 76 cards fits neatly onto a single A4 sheet as 7 x 11 tiles.

For the expansions and promos (including the Mirrors and Sphinx, Diver and Confusion) I have used the same sized tiles for cards that are shuffled into the deck, and mini sized cards for those that are not, such as the Mirrors promo or the goal cards in the Book of Steps Lost and Found. On the back of each card or tile is an icon identifying which expansion or combination of expansions it is used in. The base game tiles have plain backs, so it is easy to separate and sort the components for whatever combination you want to play.

So far I have designed the components. Next step will be to build it and see if it works as well in practice as I think it should. I'll post updates here as I go.

EDIT: Here's the base game tiles...

...the expansion tiles (missing two more dead ends) - can you pick which cards they correspond to?...

...and some of the expansion cards, including a list with matching icons for sorting them...

EDIT 2: I have just finished building the components (apart from a draw bag and a box to hold it all). I even made a little incubus out of an offcut of wood. Here are some pictures of the base game and each of the expansions/promos:

Downloaded the files from the Kickstarter page for this "pre-quill" to Paperback. Paperback is probably my favorite word game that I've played thus far, and I'm really anticipating giving this one a try...hopefully by the time game night rolls around in a week and a half.

Finished this up tonight...tried something different and used contact paper as my back. Not sure it would hold up well long term, but I sleeved them at any rate.

Hope to give it a go with my son tomorrow.

April showers expected this weekend, which means some basic crafting. I'll be laminating the remainder of Pencil Park and making a double-sided board. Thinking of making some cards I can leave in the car as well.

If anyone has suggestions on a better way than tissue to remove dry-erase ink from pages, I'm ready to hear them!

At the same time, I want to print the basic printables/consumables for Deadball. Lamination might be tricky.

Also going to work on a dice tray. I've got a lot of blanket scraps and I'm sick of looking at them. They are a great surface. I've used smaller scraps. Those don't *really* work, especially with larger dice. I'm not sure whether I have a single piece sufficiently large to fit in a shadowbox. With unfinished wood, what is the best treatment? A light oil rub? Milk paint?

Happy gaming!

Bought the PnP of this game from Hollandspiele Games. A logistics-driven easy to learn wargame. You are managing, well, the supply lines of your army, if you want to move or attack you have to have food and war supplies. Can't wait to try it out.

Very easy to make. Just a board and some counters.

I have finished my PnP of Tsuro using a recycled board from a chess set I no longer use and re-themeing the tiles.
Using foam core, I made the tiles needed to lay down on board and scaled them to size. The tokens used are from Dragonology as I hardly play this game and it seemed fitting for this game.

This game is an entry in the 2017 Wargame contest. I have recently been dipping my toe into the war game realm and this game does not disappoint. The designer created (and won with) Castle Itter last year. I remember eying it up and thinking about putting it together but I had no experience with state of siege style games at the time. Pavlov's House is the sequel, in spirit, to that game and I am so happy that I built it.

3 pages black and white. You also need to add 6d6 (I recommend at least 2 colors), 10-11 tokens (cubes or beads) (I recommend thematic colors for 2 food, 2 wood, 1 native, 1 weather, 1 ship, and 4 water), and 4 dimes (or other small coins or small meeples). Then you either need to laminate the board and use blue and green wipeable markers, or colored pencils and reprint the board. I'm using a laminate sheet just folded over and not sealed.

So, it is a simple build. It does have very tiny print though, and a couple of minor rule misprints and ambiguities that you can houserule easily enough.

Play wise, you have several timers (food, water, hull, wounds). It is a worker placement with never enough people to do everything you need, and, if the dice hate you, bad things happening to you as you try to travel and survive long enough.

Edit: I roll the sloop accident check and the weather check at the same time, which is why 2 dice colors help.

Not MY picture, but representative.

Thanks to a bunch of posts this month I discovered Deep Future. As I played the game new worlds and technologies have started to populate my deck and I find it very rewarding to try to name the techs appropriately.

I've had a really great time revisiting all of my favorite sci-fi universes as it is a fundamental part of the game to create worlds and associated technological innovations.

The Twelve Colonies of Kobol have invented dradis technology, cylons, and mark I vipers. Paul Atraides has taken over the Padisha Empire with spice harvesters, spacing guild heighliners and stone burners.

I've got some Hitchhikers Guide planets in the works - and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has already been invented

i was thinking in retheme Risk Express, but then i found this one and found it compelling so i must done a home made version.

Yesterday i finish the design of the cards, kinda hard as some of the castles are ruins by now and the only images i can found were dioramas.

so far this are the cards, now i need to print them, my first thought is to print them on adhesive vinil and then sticked to cardboard for sturdiness.

The dice are ready but i do not have a photo avaliable.

Quick build - just a small board and a few counters.

I finally got back to PnP tutorial videos this month, with the first half of a two-parter on making boxes:

Contains more tips on how to make a tuckbox than any single human being really needs, a video version of my previous simple two-deck telescoping box, and info on how to make and size your own templates for that and folded-card telescoping boxes.

I think I actually had all the video shot for this last month, but editing took far longer than I expected! I have the footage for the next video - on larger and sturdier boxes - all done as well, hopefully I'll get that one edited together as well before the end of April...

I only found out about this geeklist a couple of days ago when I finally stasrted to get into pnp games. For the longest time, I completely neglected them. Then, some of them started appearing on SGOYT geeklists and, since I finally got a printer, I decided to give some of them a try.
Started with the easiest possible games (like 30 Rails). I mean, even I can print out one page and not screw it up

So, after a couple of them, I remembered reading about this game here: Infiltrate: into the bear cave and decided to give it a try.

For me, who's still new to pnp and has no clue on what works best, this was the single most difficult game I had to put together so far. A fwe counters, standees, the maps... But I think it turned out alright:

Now off to read the rules.

Thank you for all the inspiration you guys provided me with and the new games to try out

Just completed this.

Not sure how good of a game it is, but we'll see.
