We've just started our Easter holidays. These tend to be curiously low-key compared with Christmas (presents, snow, turkey!) and the long Summer holidays.

But I'm sure that nevertheless everyone has some interesting customs to share!

Religious themed games tend not to be particularly well regarded, either because they are too preachy or, from an alternative perspective, too mocking of deeply held beliefs.

Which religious themed games have you played? Which were the best and worst? Is it a theme you avoid, seek out or don't care much either way?

My sister and family are holidaying a few miles South of us this week, and it happened to be my nephew's birthday, so we were invited along to a celebration. A few years ago we introduced him to gaming and he has taken it like a duck to water, to the extent that other people now buy him games. In fact we were asked not to get him one this year as he was already being given two new ones! Forbidden Desert was one of these and after tea we tried it out with 8 players (some playing in pairs as it only accommodates 5). It is quite similar to Forbidden Island, one of the first games we gave him, but different enough that we did rather badly and died horribly of thirst, though we had collected all the parts of the mysterious before being overcome. We also played a few other games whilst we were there; it's particularly satisfying when people you've brought into the fold are genuinely enthusiastic abotu playing games!

Forbidden Desert x 1
Apples to Apples x 1
Timeline: Inventions x 1
LOTR: The Confrontation x 1
Auf Heller und Pfennig x 1
Keyflower x 1
Race for the Galaxy x 1

 8   Parade
 6   Coin Age x2
 6   Mord im Arosa

Noteworthy Games:

Fabled Fruit continues to provide simple yet addictive fun. The best part is it allows the kids to try easy and new tactics. And if they don’t work? Oh well. The game is short enough that losing hasn’t been a big deal.

I taught Parade to our eldest, and when I won she acted surprised. She tuned out for a lot of the game, playing as if the game were playing itself. I stressed the importance of those majorities at the end, but I think that may have been one step too far along in the explanation for her to effectively grasp.

Everything else this week was just a little disappointing for one reason or another: Tante Tarantel was chaotic at five players, Coin Age devolves into a take that game near the end, and Mord im Arosa lasts just a beat too long. The problem we had with Letter Tycoon wasn’t actually with the game but with my level of exhaustion. I forgot a simple rule and inadvertently cheated my way to a win.

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Only one play this week as much of my time has involved having an elevated leg or a bit of pain. This is getting better as bones knit so might do something this weekend.

The one game I played was a school project brought home by Little Fish the Elder who had to design a boardgame based on consequences. He made a simple roll and move with 'Chance' style cards where you draw a card that will move you forwards or backwards depending of what the card said you did.

He made the playing pieces for all members of the family and even drew my token with me on crutches!

Wonderful gaming week, getting to play some of my very favorites, due to managing to attend two local game nights.

I didn't love Orleans, but I found myself thinking about it afterward, and this is typically a good sign going forward.

So, not many games this week, but on the bright side I met up with a local gamer and tried Antiquity which had been on my want-to-play list since it came out 13 years ago.

There were a lot of options to keep up with. It's a pretty fiddly games as you have to produce stuff, move your men around, build buildings, store or use the stuff, etc. I dug myself into a hole that I thought I couldn't escape, although in retrospect I probably could have struggled through a few more turns and then built a new city. (I forgot I could make luxury goods through a fishing spot.) Anyway, I'd be interested in playing again now that I understand how everything works.

Lots of happy gaming in the last week. We re-discovered Train of Thought after quite a long break and still have a good laugh out of it ("Helium goes where?" "Up!" "Who lives up?" "Aliens!" "Below the Aliens?" "Birds!" Etc.). I would sooo love to be able to play that in German...
Trades and gifts brought more new games in, and I was able to try most of them already. Mostly good stuff, though nothing really extraordinary.

An odd week where the only games I played were designed by me. Hmm...

N/A   Unpublished Prototype x6 - Half of these plays were of Shooting Party, which is steadily getting into a decent state, and the others were of March Hares, which I made for the March 24 hour game design contest.
N/A   Giftmas with the Grimms x2 - And the guys at work wanted a try of Giftmas, in its latest form, so who am I to refuse?

I must admit I miss playing "real" games.

I've just been on holiday in Fuerteventura for a week, so the games played are the ones we took, apart from one game of RoboRally played on the Wednesday before we left with the two boys. Spot the games that we took on holiday and the children got really keen on! They'd only played basic Star Realms before, but both the boys became really keen on both the Colony Wars version and Hero Realms. My older son also tried Patchwork, which he seemed to enjoy. Spanish Siesta time is gaming time, so we played several games most days, as well as my husband and I getting some games in after the children had gone to bed in the evening.

Gaming with other adults:
