So... it all started by chance. A lovely guy named Raymond picked up a few of my requests done in the official Microbadge: Designs and Requests thread. We chatted a bit via GM, and it happened I told him about a few MB designs I had in mind, and he agreed on helping. The present list stems from this: the will to work together on something different. Thus, you won't be seeing MBs for games here, but mostly for books, philosophers, authors, and ideas.

An important disclaimer: this list is not a substitutive list for the usual request thread. It's just a way for me and Ray to keep track of the commissioned microbadges. If you have requests for new badges and stuff, the best way to go is the usual Request thread. But everyone is welcome to post their comments and ideas on the suggested themes

The whole list will have a total of (presumably) 40 entries

So, the first request is something that roots deep in the past. A MB celebrating the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios are creating the most ambitious narrative arch of the whole history of the cinema: developing a continuous story line over a series of movies and tv series destined to transport in the theaters a narrative project that can be considered a sort of modern mythology. We have tons of MBs for this or that Marvel hero, but nothing to celebrate this project

Back in 2013, a marvellous woman won the Nobel prize for literature: Alice Munro. If you haven't read anything from her, please, get a book, something to drink, sit comfy and start reading. You'll discover infinite worlds contained in very few words. I discovered her through an anthology called "Dear Life". At the beginning, I was puzzled. The stories were all dull, all sad, with troubled characters spending their miserable lives suffering and grieving. Then I got the meaning. The contemplation of the ordinary existance of men and women alike. The telling of what's usually not told because no one wants. We all run from an abyss in which we should actually look. A choral work, telling the story of the recent times, of the origins from which we all descend. Future, present and past mixed together. Countless patterns and meanings hidden beneath the simplest of words. So, the original sensation turned quickly into the deepest kind of love.

I think this portrait is fantastic, but I don't know if it's in quality high enough to become a MB. Otherwise a simple Google search could suggest better results?

As for the mouseover: The constant happiness is curiosity

At the moment we have a MB celebrating the immortal works of Jose Saramago, but there are no MBs specific to his books. I firstly discovered him as an author by reading Blindness. The novel was... tough to read. Incredibly tough. But life changing. On each of that pages, one could debate for hours. Religion, politics, society, love and sex, the origin of fear and the capacity to forgive, go beyond, accept a burden even if it's not yours. It's fantastic (but you need to have stomach to go through a lot of pain)

It'd be nice to have an MB celebrating this book. I understand this could be incredibly difficult to craft; as a source image possibly the cover for the book could work? (the cover of the italian version is interesting: link); otherwise I'm open to suggestions.

As for the mouseover: "I don't think we did go blind, I think we are blind, Blind but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do not see"

Alternate mouseovers: "If I'm sincere today, what does it matter if I regret it tomorrow?"

OR

"“Inside us there is something that has no name, that something is what we are”

Back to literature This time it's the turn of Antonia S. Byatt, English poet, novelist and Booker Prize winner in 1990 for the marvellous novel Possession (read, read, read, it's a total masterpiece, intertwining the study of medieval classics with a sort of "crime" story, i.e. two university researchers discover a secret liason between two authors of the past and by their letters, they reconstruct a whole different story, but clearly it's so much more than that). She's an avangardist, someone who re-invented literature in the 20th century and a huge love of mine. In particular, I'd recommend reading her short story, "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye", where arabian nights fairytale, modern shortstory and Chaucer mix together in something that's possibly the best short story I've read so far (people not having the time to read but curious, feel free to GM me)

Also, reading her short novel Ragnarok changed my life forever

So, please, an MB celebrating this awesome writer! Source: Google (a couple of images are particularly neat I think: the one where she bends her right hand on her chin)

Mouseover: "What literature can and should do is change the people who teach the people who don't read the books"

And of course if you feel like trying a badge for "Possession" or "The Djinn" and you have ideas (even from the cover of the books), I'm more than happy to support you

PS: if you're curious of the game chosen as entry, another of her novels was named "The Virgin in the Garden"

PS2: if someone's curious to read a snip of Possession (spoiler free), here we go:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
“What is it my dear?"

"Ah, how can we bear it?"

"Bear what?"

"This. For so short a time. How can we sleep this time away?"

"We can be quiet together, and pretend - since it is only the beginning - that we have all the time in the world."

"And every day we shall have less. And then none."

"Would you rather, therefore, have had nothing at all?"

"No. This is where I have always been coming to. Since my time began. And when I go away from here, this will be the mid-point, to which everything ran, before, and from which everything will run. But now, my love, we are here, we are now, and those other times are running elsewhere.”

Let's go back in time until the age of the Tang dinasty in China. At that time lived one the greatest poet of all times, Li Bai (also known as Li Bo or Li Po). I'm not able to comment properly on her greatness without writing ten pages of MB request; it's enough mentioning I believe that both Ezra Pound and Gustav Mahler were influenced by his poems; but they were not the only ones.

There'one image that could be used for the badge (link); I'd suggest to crop the image so that the face is clearly visible.

Suggested mouseover:

"We sit together, the mountain and me, until only the mountain remains"

It was back in 1992 when Ron Fricke (formerly known as the man behind the camera in the first two instalments of Godfrey Reggio's Qatsi trilogy) revealed to the world his masterpiece. A movie named "Baraka", made of only images and sounds where the relationship between music / spirituality / religion in the contemporary world was investigated, as long as the impact the advent of the western civilized worlds had on many other cultures. It's an absolute masterpiece, both in terms of technique used and in terms of significance for what's represented on screen (not to mention it was incredibly difficult to realize for obvious reasons - it's almost an independent movie and the guy went like everywhere to shoot images). So, a fan MB seems in order

Source for the image:

(there's a gazillion more on the internet, it's enough googling "baraka + movie" to avoid the videogame references)

The most iconic trait of the image is the solar eclipse; but the face of the kid in the jungle is also good imo.

Mouseover: "The thread that weaves life together - Baraka fan"

(where the first part of the M/O is the actual meaning of the world Baraka in the ancient Sufi language)

Also, if you haven't watched this movie, go get it, it's a life changing experience - or at least try this youtube videoclip:

So... this one could be tough. Let's go back to Germany, 1926. Director Arnold Fanck created a movie named "Der heilige Berg" ("The Holy Mountain" in the English version) where future director Leni Riefensthal played the part of Diotima, a dancer around which a tragic love story develops. The movie is interesting (also because it was a very high budget movie for that time), but the sequence of the dancer dancing on the cliffs is as of today breathtaking. If you're interested, there's a clip here on youtube (mounted on a Of the Wand and the Moon song that actually doesn't fit a damn, but still)

so, I'd love to have a badge commemorating this movie based on the following image:

I understand this could be a nightmare because of the proportions of the dancer, so, let me know in case

50 years ago, Katherine Switzer was the first woman to start and finish a marathon. In 1967, there were a lot of people still believing that women were unable to run a marathon, stating that - and I am not making this up - their uterus might fall out.

In the picture series above, you can see how one of the race directors tried to take her starting number away, while her boyfriend gently pushed the guy away. She finished the race and women were officially allowed in the Boston Marathon 5 years later.

She is now 70, finished the 41-km marathon again in 4:36 hours -- only 16 minutes longer than she did 50 years before, wearing her number 261 once again. Almost half of the runners were women.

So, please, a Katherine Switzer fan badge

Ray, this could be difficult, but possibly it's worth trying.

We're talking of the opening of the Heike Monogatari, an epic story by an anonymous author rooting back in feudal Japan (14th century). It's a collection of stories that until that time were transmitted only orally, with only a biwa liute to accompany them. The opening is stunning (and has been used and re-used both by intellectuals and in more main stream products - for example, in Rumiko Takahashi's anime Ranma 1/2), and it's worth pondering:

The bells of the Gion monastery in India echo with the warning that all things are impermanent.
The blossoms of the sala trees teach us through their hues that what flourishes must fade.
The proud do not prevail for long but vanish like a spring night's dream.
In time the mighty, too, succumb: all are dust before the wind.

Could be worth making 4 MBs, each having as mouseover one of these verses.

If you feel like trying, I'll start thinking about source images. Let me know

::::::::::::::::::::::::

EDIT: potential source images. It was a difficult hunt, and the sources are not so neat to work on, but traditional japanese painting was done on panels (thus, the whole landscape is broken into several parts by vertical lines showing the connections between two subsequent panels) and clearly google returns to you with tons of chinese paintings, which are not fitting. Anyhoo, some results:

Which of these images do you think is the most fit for the required badge series? Everyone is more than welcome to post & share their thoughts!

We do have a MB for fans of Milan Kundera, but we don't have any MB for his most notorious work ("The Unbearable Lightness of Being"), nor with any famous quote, which is rather a pity.

So, possible quotes from TULoB (please, cast your vote so that we can pick the proper M/O):

a) "When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object"
b) "Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves"
c) "Love is the longing for the half of ourselves we have lost"

As a source image: a crop of the book's cover. The italian edition had a painting used on the cover, you could work on that painting?

I've recently watched a documentary commemorating the life and works of Hollywood legend Roddy McDowall. I discovered him only recently (to my greatest shame) by watching for the first time the movie Fright Night, and remained amazed by all what he did, and achieved throughout his very logn career. He was a recipient of a century of cinema, a conoisseur of Hollywood's history, and an exquisite and humble person despite he could talk of Charlie Chaplin or Elizabeth Taylor for direct knowledge. Truly impressive.

It'd be lovely to have a commemorative badge, based on this image.

As for the mouseover: "I enjoyed being in movies when I was a boy. As a child you're not acting - you believe"

And consequently, a microbadge celebrating Fright Night! Fright Night was an extremely important movie in the history of horror films because it gave new vitality to the whole "movies with monsters" genre. Before Fright Night we had a lot of movies that were parodistic towards the vampires, but no real new movie for a very long time. Fright Night gives new vitality to the genre, by mixing humor to the traditional horror, but without mocking the genre (like other movies of those years did), and it gave everything a new life. A lot of modern products, from Bram Stoker's Dracula to Buffy would not have existed if Fright Night hadn't been shot, so, it'd be nice to have a commemorative badge for this movie as well.

It could be inspired by the movie poster (link), or by a crop of it (like the mouth of the demon, which wasn't supposed to even exist - they run out of funds, and it was sculpted as a "favor" towards the director Tom Holland under the promise that it'd have appeared on screen only for a few seconds).

As a mouseover, I'd suggest the notorious Evil Ed's line "you're so cool, Brewster - Fright Night fan", but I'm very much open to suggestions

I'd like a commemorative badge for Maryam Mirzakhani (Google for some reference pictures).

Some bit of history: she grew up in Iran, so, not the most women-friendly environment of the planet. She got lucky since in high-school she had a dean who fought greatly to have quality study for women as well. Moved out of Iran to study further and pursue an academic career in mathematics. To this day, she's the only woman who won the Fields medal for mathematics (the equivalent of the Nobel prize given to young math researchers) since 1936. A marvellous mind who left this world at 40 years of age due to cancer. Further readings: wikipedia

So, there's a poet I hold very dear, and it's not represented in any badge of sort: Algernon Charles Swinburne. What he wrote of was really before his time, and for this reason he became quite unloved at his time (and I think he's still mostly an underdog), but his metric, his style, his embracing the decadentism, even with too many eccesses, are something really unique that should be known.

The thing I love the most among the many he wrote is the beginning of the poem "Atalanta in Calydon":

“Before the beginning of years
There came to the making of man
Time, with a gift of tears;
Grief, with a glass that ran;
Pleasure, with pain for leaven;
Summer, with flowers that fell;
Remembrance, fallen from heaven,
And madness risen from hell;
Strength without hands to smite;
Love that endures for a breath;
Night, the shadow of light,
And Life, the shadow of death.”

Possibly the first three verses (united with the usual AUTHOR fan sequence Ray knows better than me) could be a good mouseover? And the whole excerpt from the poem could make it to the badge wiki?

As for the source image, we could use this one

Edith Margaret Garrud fan.

She was one of the first female martial arts instructors in the world, and was a bodyguard instructor for the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) (the leading militant organisation campaigning for Women's suffrage in the United Kingdom, 1903–1917).

Quite ahead of her time, learned jujutsu (so, the historical version of the martial art, if we go by the difference from -do and -jutsu in martial arts) in Japan, and upon her return to England, she started training females and children in 1911. She wrote articles about women's self defence and hey, she started something, even if she might be not so well-known these days.

There's quite a notorious image called "The Suffragette that knew Jiu-Jitsu" (the title could be good as part of the mouseover) (link) that could possibly be somehow used?

A few days ago, Ursula K. LeGuin passed. There's already an MB for her, but it's just her portrait and the signature "UKLG fan". It's good for those who know her works, but doesn't say much to those who don't. Plus, there's a few great things she did in life that possibly should deserve a proper recognition.

So, in a way similar to what we did for Saramago, I'd like to suggest two badges based on some of her most famous books:

a) a badge for "The Dispossessed", with the quote

"You cannot buy the revolution. You cannot make the revolution. You can only be the revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere"

b) a badge for "The Left Hand of Darkness", with the quote

"Truth is a matter of the imagination"

source image can be a particular of the book cover for both badges

over the last months, Alex proved being not only a wonderful person towards the community, but also showed several times what a real parent should do (i.e. understanding the real priorities in life). I won't go into details (would be very long), but I've never met a person like Alex in my life. Other members of the FTL community think the same, and actually one of them suggested that a badge should be exist, so, the request.

Mouseover: "Parenting done right!"

A fan badge for Irène Némirovsky (beware of the accents here )

The quote representative of the authress:

“Deep within everyone's heart there always remains a sense of longing for that hour, that summer, that one brief moment of blossoming. For several weeks or months, rarely longer, a beautiful young woman lives outside ordinary life. She is intoxicated. She feels as if she exists beyond time, beyond its laws; she experiences not the monotonous succession of days passing by, but moments of intense, almost desperate happiness.”

It's too long for a mouseover, but could be used for the wiki; as mouseover I'd suggest an outcrop of this paragraph:

"Deep within everyone's heart there always remains a sense of longing for that one brief moment of blossoming"

As image picking one image where she's young?

the story of this lady is far from being happy or long; she died aged 39 in Auschwitz but what she achieved in so little time both in literature and in terms of greatness of thought is impressive. If you have a chance, try reading Suite française

This is a fan badge for Ernesto Vegetti. Ernesto Vegetti has been one of the greatest sci-fi experts ever existed. He started a long time ago a *huge project* in library use, with the idea of creating a catalogue of all the sci-fi production printed in my country through the years. He started the catalogue back in the day when no one had computers, so he did that on a typewriter, working nights and months and years of his life, cross-referencing all existing editions, working directly with editors and authors and so on. To this day (he passed in 2010), his catalogue (available on-line here - go and give a look, English should be included in the catalogue) is the reference point for *any* bibliographical research in my country. Ernesto might be dead now, but his work is mantained alive by a group of volunteers and it's really... astonishing.

He used to sign his messages with the sentence: "Quod non est in Catalogo non est in mundo" (meaning "what is not in the Catalogue doesn't exist in this world"), which would be great for a mouseover.

As for the microbadge, we could use this image maybe as a source?
