Please read before posting:

If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Eclipse, feel free to read along with us. And if you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it—if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members. However, if you'd like to join in regular discussion, first post to the current discussion list inquiring about the possibility of becoming a member, with full discussion privileges.

To that end, GCL Eclipse members may from time to time request that nonmember posters refrain from commenting in the discussion lists for reasons that may include aggressive or confrontational commentary, disruptive or irrelevant discourse, and overly frequent or habitual posting without first requesting and being granted membership.

Thank you for respecting these guidelines in our place of regular discussion. We hope the discussion we create here is rich, informative, and, most of all, fun for members and nonmembers alike.

If you are interested in becoming a member, please peruse our wiki. If what you see interests you, contact Lorna to inquire about the possibility of becoming a member:

When you get together for game night, do you have certain rituals or deeply embedded patterns? Everyone sits on the same place? Drinks the same thing? Always arrives early or late?

Since we stabilized on a number of attendees, we have fallen into patterns of where we sit, where the coasters are, who drinks what, etc. Funny and cool to watch it happen.

This time of year, as spring is springing in the Northern Hemisphere, is a good time to appreciate each other.

I think of games as a means to an end, escapism, challenge, and connection.

I appreciate my friends far more than I tell them. Do you do anything special for those you game or otherwise hang with?

Do any of your groups have 'go to' games? Sort of the fall back or touchstone? One group had Big Boss and another Roll for the Galaxy.

I tend to go with the flow and play whatever. Do you have an alpha gamer who tends to bring/propose most of the games? Or do you have a game selection method? If so, what is it?

What is the most recent game that 'fell' into your collection?

I dissed Staufer Dynasty, but recently traded for a copy after having a good 3p game of it in under 60 minutes.

Do you generally have music on when you game? If so, who chooses it or what is it?We tend not to, but if someone suggests something, I'm almost always good with it.

This is a month of plays, with SaltCON at the beginning of the month, and my weekly game night mixed in:

Games with my family:

N/A   Creatures: The Card Game NEW!
 N/A   Codenames: Pictures NEW!
 6   Codenames x2
 8   Battle Masters
 N/A   Cat Box NEW!

SaltCON and other Game Nights:

N/A   Anachrony x3 NEW! - Had more fun with this than I expected. Having played first with the plastic mechs, I do like they feel they give to the game. The time travel is an interesting loan mechanism, with risk and reward.
8   Last Train to Wensleydale - I'm really enjoying this route builder.
8   A Feast for Odin - I think 3 plays was enough of this one. Kinda fun, but not interesting enough to keep me going.
7   Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition - I still like Race better, but this one is entertaining.
N/A   Solarius Mission NEW! - A hairy list of rules, but very straightforward when you actually play. This was was enjoyable, with multiple ways to earn points.
N/A   Bill & Ted's Excellent Boardgame NEW! - Silly fun. Very random take on a programming game.
 N/A   Ponzi Scheme
9   Container - Love this game, hope to play it some more.
7   Flip City - Great filler for the office. I like the push your luck mechanism in this one as well.
N/A   Timeline NEW! - Interesting trivia game.
8   Great Western Trail - My second play, I understood what I was doing better, and was able to get a good herd moving. Played with 3, I think that's ideal for this game.
8   Via Nebula - Enjoyed my second play of this more than the first. I like the very light route building, and delivery system.
7   Railroad Revolution - Probably my last play of this one. Mildly amusing.
N/A   American Rails NEW! - Loved this one. I thought this was a better 18xx-lite than Poseidon.

Other Stuff!

Games recently acquired - High Frontier (3rd edition), Olympus, Patchistory

Reading - Game of Thrones in Spanish, Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams. This is my second time through Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy, with 20 years between. I'm enjoying it again. Also recently read Fablehaven at my daughter's request. It is certainly targeted at younger readers, but I thought it was very well written. Better than Harry Potter, certainly.

Watching - Just started Daredevil on Netflix. Really enjoyed the first 3 episodes. Also recently started watching Arrested Development, and thoroughly enjoying that one as well!

Hiking! - I've been doing some more hiking lately. There's a lot of trails in the mountains within 5-10 minutes of my house, and I've been enjoying getting out there. Even with the spring snow! Hoping to go backpacking this summer.

There has been a dearth of gaming for me in April. I played a partial episode of Seafall on the 3rd, 2/3'rds of a Pananmax game on the 4th, and a couple of games Tuesday evening. (St. Pete and To Court the King) With some travel coming up next week, it is looking pretty slim on the gaming front.

Nevertheless, I have found myself active with the collection. I have sold off 5 old Avalon Hill games, and have ordered a copy of GMT's Grand Prix. It's not a steady deal, but I am trying to reduce my collection... I'm quite bad at this, and when money hits my PayPal account, that is my gaming piggy account. So I feel empowered to shop, balance willing. But I seem to look mostly, as rarely do new games get me as excited as they once did.

Earlier this year I had a lot of fun (badly) painting miniature cars for my old AH Auto Racing game. Most recently I have enjoyed exploring the rules system for Legend: History of 1000 Miglia. I am not a strong solitaire player, I often start something just to get bored with it, and drop it. (I prefer playing with other people.) But Legend, may endure a bit longer for me, as the modeling of the old car models is interesting.
