A very good week of games.

Monday

Tournay x1
Ra x2

Tournay came back after a long hiatus, since, after playing it two or three times with several rules wrong, it soured to us and stayed in the dust. After the healing time passed, it came back, with a promise of all rules right. And with the rules right, it is a pretty enjoyable game - it offers several choices, paths to victory and interaction.

Ra is always great - enough so that, even without time, we played it twice. I won the first. In the second, in spite of having the 13, 11, 10 and 9 sun tiles, and did very little, as the Ra tiles came too fast and I ended up using only two of these four tiles. I wasn't able to fully recover in the last Era and lost by 5 points.

Friday

Strasbourg x1
Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game x1
TAMSK x1 (new to me)
ZÈRTZ x1 (new to me)
ICECOOL x3 (new to me)
Loopin' Louie x2 (new to me)
Le Boomb! x2
Unpublished Prototype x2
Codenames x2
Blueprints x1

A pretty full games, mostly with light games (I enjoy them). Le Boomb! was the worst new game of the day, barely being a game. TAMSK was the best one, by a country mile - so fun, fast and smart. The highlight of the the day was Strasbourg, which I considered to be one of the best Feld game, with one of the best auction system ever made. It was also memorable the first play of Codenames, in which my team was losing badly: we needed to get 4 clues right and the other team, just one. Thus we went all in, and we did get all the 4 missing targets!

Saturday

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation x1
7 Wonders Duel x1
Sentinels of the Multiverse x2

Another nice set of games. I won the 7W Duel by a military victory in the last card of the game - if we were to go to count points, I would lost 84 to 67. In Confrontation, my Fellowship lead Frodo to Mordor. In Sentinels, we tried the Ultimate level of Ambuscade and Kismet, to taste them. Ambuscade did got a lot harder, but was defeated as usual. Kismet, which is usually harder to beat, was easier for the heroes.

Sunday

No games on Easter. But my dog left us - she had kidney failure on saturday and stomach problems, and didn't passed through Easter. We are incredible sad, but know that she had a pretty good 13 years of life with us.

And that was it. Have a great week, everyone.

Regards,

 7.0   Vast: The Crystal Caverns

We played this on our Tuesday game night. It took us about 3 hours to finish the game, but that was including setup and everyone learning the game. This is really a great game, with a bit of a learning curve. By the end the cave had won. The knight and dragon were both 1 turn away from winning. The only complaint I had was that the Thief felt very detached from the rest of the game. The player felt that he didn't have much interaction.

 N/A   Harbour NEW!

I knew next to nothing about this game, but it is a very elegant take on a worker placement game. Very simple to play, and lots of strategy.

 8.0   Kingdom Death: Monster

So we decided to try and fight the Beast of Sorrow, and he promptly murdered us all. Great game, but wow is it hard.

A week+ ago, I played Orléans for the first time in months and enjoyed it quite a bit (again). In this space last Monday, I asked whether Orléans: Invasion was a worthwhile addition, even if I knew I wouldn't play the solo scenarios. I received a couple of positive responses.

So I bought Orléans: Invasion last week, it arrived on Friday, and my wife & I played the cooperative Invasion scenario on Saturday.

It was a lot of fun! I used to think that I didn't like co-op games in general, but I think instead I only don't like certain types of co-ops. Specifically, I don't like games like Ghost Stories, where you're constantly putting out fires that the game throws at you. I'm not really a big fan of Pandemic either, for the same reason, although I enjoyed Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 in spite of that feature because of the story & legacy elements of the game.

But after enjoying Orléans: Invasion and The Ravens of Thri Sahashri, I guess I do like certain co-ops -- if they're not fire-fighting co-ops, and if they're complex enough.

My wife & I won our first attempt at the scenario!* **

* Well, we won by playing 19 rounds, rather than the allowed 18.
** Also, we won if you're allowed to use a monk as a knight on the wall, which I'm pretty sure you're not...

Anyway, we'll give it another go soon.

---

On Sunday, I did something I've never done before in my board gaming life: I played a game solo! I tried the Dignitary scenario in Orléans: Invasion, and it was quite enjoyable. It's still Orléans, but rather than accumulating points, you're trying to collect 8 citizens by accomplishing various objectives. It was also very quick -- I successfully won, and the game took ~30 minutes after rules & setup.

Maybe I'll get more into this solo thing...

Tuesday
3x - Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Dunwich Legacy Campaign
Standard Difficulty
Solo
Rex and Zoey
Game 1: Scenario 1B - R4 ending (Rex now has 2 Physical Trauma...ouch!)
Game 2: Scenario 2 - R2 ending
Game 3: Scenario 3 - R1 ending (Rex and Zoey have 1 Mental Trauma each)

As you may be able to tell from this week's plays, I am greatly enjoying Arkham Horror goo Played through Dunwich (up to scenario 3)-- I really like the different feels of the investigator and the strengths of different investigator combinations. Rex is a gosh darn clue vacuum and in concert with Zoey's combat prowess they are a formidable duo. That said, they did end up pretty battered (especially poor Rex by scenario 1B).
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Gotta say, I love how the scenario you choose to do first makes the subsequent one more difficult--nice touch!

Wednesday
1x - Arkham Horror: The Card Game
Dunwich Legacy Campaign
Standard Difficulty
Solo
Jim Culver and Jenny Barnes - Miskatonic Museum
No Resolution reached!

Investigators ended up getting so battered they resigned before we could resolve this scenario.

2x - Fuji-San (from Infinite Boardgame)
2 successful games of Fuji-San!

Tried this game after picking Infinite Boardgame up on sale. The Piece Pack itself is very cool -- modular pieces you can use to play a multitude of different games (similar to a deck of cards being used to play various games). This solo game was recommended on the back cover. It's a fun, quick puzzle game. I played twice and won both times. Enjoyable, but there doesn't seem to be any variety in the base game--the puzzle is always going to be the same. However, there is a more challenging mod in the book so I will give that a try next time.

Friday
3x - Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Dunwich Legacy Campaign
Standard Difficulty
Solo
Zoey and Ashcan
Game 1: Scenario 2- R2
Game 2: Scenario 3-No Resolution (Both investigators were defeated after six rounds!)
Jim and Jenny
Game 3: Scenario 3-R1 ending
Between Zoey's damage dealing and Ashcan's flexibility (due to Duke)
Zoey and Ashcan are a powerhouse matchup. Doesn't matter much though when you forget what happens in the scenario and a tactical error leads to both investigators being defeated in one turn (on turn six!). Tread carefully!

Sunday
1x - Arkham Horror: The Card Game

The Night of the Zealot Campaign
Standard Difficulty
Solo
Rex and Zoey
Game 1: Scenario 1 - No Resolution

Took the powerful Dunwich duo through The Night of the Zealot in hopes I would have some more success -- so far, no such luck! I will be taking them into the Carnavale of Horrors, Midnight Masks (and assuming I've got the spare XP, Curse of the Rogarou) and finish off with The Devourer Below.

Another slow week for gaming for me.

I realized that I still have my original 1987 season card set for Pursue the Pennant, so to celebrate the start of the baseball season, I replayed the Philadelphia Phillies' season opener against the Braves in Atlanta (4/7/87).

Shane Rawley pitched a strong five innings for the Phils, before allowing a 2-run homer to Braves catcher Ozzie Virgil in the 6th inning to put Atlanta up, 3-1. The Phillies tied the game up in the 7th, and the game stayed tied until the top of the 9th, when Lance Parrish and pinch-hitter Greg Gross hit back-to-back RBI singles, putting Philadelphia ahead 5-3. Closer Steve Bedrosian pitched the bottom of the 9th to earn his first save of the season.

PHL 000 010 202 - 5 14 0
ATL 000 012 000 - 3 7 0

W:Tekulve (1-0)
SV: Bedrosian (1)
L: Acker (0-1)

I had a pretty decent week of gaming, though it started off with a thud.

I agreed to play this game as it seemed to be what people wanted. I had never played, and the person teaching apparently had not played in a long time.

About half way through this disaster of a game, I asked to see the rulebook as things were so chaotic, there was no way we were playing the game as intended.

That turned out to be true. In fact, what we were playing barely resembled anything approaching the actual game. It's entirely possible that I might like it better if played correctly in the future, but I can't imagine ever wanting to play again.

We followed up with a great game of IoS.

On Thursday, I got in a 2P of MP, a game I still love. I'm excited to hear that an expansion is on its way, supposedly being released at Essen.

After losing my game of MP, I went 0n t0 lose a very tight 2P of RR using the Western Union variant rules.

New to me. T&T is an epic game for three, each player controlling one of the three great western powers in the mid 1930s to m id 1940s. I took the Soviet Union.

This is effectively a political control game that can become a war game should any of the powers decide to start what would become the Second World War. Ironically, in our game, no one wanted t0 start the war, and the game lasted the full number 0f rounds with the Western Allies winning the peace.

I'm pretty sure that neither the Axis powers nor I were nearly aggressive enough, but the decision of when to declare war is agonizingly difficult.

In any case, I like the game and want to try and get better at it.

Light week of gaming for me.

1x Yangtze

A new Knizia release, this is a economic game of set collection and auctions. You draw tiles out of a bag ala Ra, if it is a good it goes on the river and you then buy a good from the river, collecting by color or good type. If it is a building they are auctioned off, and have value for majorities and set collection at end game. If you draw a ruler they give a benefit or punishment depending on which super is drawn. Game ends when the last ruler is drawn from the bag.

You as well have a half dozen cards that give you one time benefits (free tile, two purchases in one round etc). Money is very tight in this game, and I was constantly struggling to have the funds to buy goods and have enough funds for when the auctions come up. While it was fine with 2, I feel it would play better with 3-4 players as the auctions and the majorities therein are pretty cut and dried with two. I had fun.

1x Steam Time

First time with 3 players, scales well for all player counts

1x Patchwork

Introduced my sister to this and she trounced me.

1x Cribbage

First game of cribbage in I don't know 20 years? Good to play again.

1x Brew Crafters

My wife went with a money plan and pulled off her first win. Great game.

5 plays of 5 distinct games

Friday night, played two games of Inis with four. The first was a learning game with some obvious rookie mistakes, such as leaving one player alone almost exclusively. Of course, he just kept expanding and won.

The second game was much tighter. Victory conditions kept getting stolen out from anyone coming close... Until the perfect storm of lucky conditions came about to give me the win. I honestly misplayed at least four times across two turns, but if I had done anything differently, I would not have won. I felt clever with my inadvertent come-from-behind victory while everyone else was focused elsewhere.

Saturday night was a friend's birthday. I missed a chunk of gaming because I got off from work late, but we did get some plays in. Played a good seven or more rounds of DETHRONED: The Real-Time Combat Card Game. It's appropriately chaotic and light, good for a late-night wind down.

Also played a game of Fluxx. Hadn't played the current version at all, having owned an earlier edition. It went as expecting, with every rule played coming back to bite the player within a couple turns.

However, on Saturday night we also had a bit of a meta-game going. I had bought a pack of Bean Boozled jelly beans. For those unaware, these jelly beans are a mix of good and bad flavors that look identical. Spoiled milk or Coconut? Won't know until you bite down.

We played that anyone who lost a hand/round/game/whatever had to eat a bean. We had a lot of gross moments, but at least no one vomited.

Two games of Pax Porf. One interrupted when my friend become violently ill with a stomach bug, the other plodded on with nothing but a gold victory to look forward to since too many black cards were in the mix.

Bit of Flip City, bit of Wallet Civ in Space!, considering downsizing game collection again.

Wednesday

Lords of Vegas x 1 - Went to a FLGS board game meetup and got in on a 6 player game of Lords of Vegas with the Up expansion. First time playing this game and it was a lot of fun, got a couple of casinos along the strip and ended up in a three way tie for third. Really enjoyed the game and would definitely play again.

Adrenaline x 1 - Lords of Vegas was followed up with a three player game of Adrenaline. I was able to finish in second place on the kill track using a combination of Flame Thrower/Shotgun/Railgun/Cyberblade throughout the game and finish first overall in points. Point totals were 36 - 35 - 30.

Saturday

FUSE x 3 - Julie and I met up with a couple of friends at a Board Game cafe and decided to try out Fuse as our first game. I gotta say that 10 minutes goes by in a heartbeat - we didn't even come close to getting through the whole bomb deck on the Standard level or the one just below that. I think we spent too much time discussing as a group which dice to take because anytime we had to roll unused dice it always came back to hurt us. This game seems pretty unforgiving and nothing is worse than having dice pulled out of bag and knowing immediately there are going to be unused dice because you needed a certain color and none were pulled.

Potion Explosion x 1 - I was able to turn in a couple of sets of potions as well as complete quite a few high scoring potions but came up a bit short in overall scoring as I ended up in second with 86 points, the winning point total was 106.

The Downfall of Pompeii x 1 - We wrapped up our time at the Board Game cafe with The Downfall of Pompeii. The volcano claimed many victims during our playthrough and in the end I was tied for first but won the tiebreaker by having the least number of player pieces in the volcano.

I have not been able to keep up with the Did You Play list, missing out on chronicling a couple nice weeks, but this week's report is easy because I only played one game last week: Targi vs. Mrs. Drazen, where I won handily, 39-22.

I also did a casual session report, as it was just one of those games where everything came together easily (though, admittedly, the opponent probably should have put up more resistance).
