Expansions: their value decided by user's votes
- Carlos Brito(brito)Brazil
But how effective are the expansions? In the end, what value do they add to the base game? Are they necessary, indifferent or even harmful to the base game? Those are questions valid to anyone who considers to buy an expansion.
With that in mind, I devised this geeklist whose aim is to serve as a guide to people considering the acquisition of an expansion. It's devised to collect not my personal opinion, but the opinion of many people who already know the base games and their expansions and can help other people by classifying the expansions voting in a poll. So I ask the help of the community to make this geeklist useful by submitting your opinion.
Every item in this geeklist appears with a poll of 4 options, detailed below.
1 - Excellent - the expansion adds great value to the base game and is almost essential/highly recommended
2 - Nice - the expansion adds some replay value/interesting elements to the base game. You can buy it, but it's not essential.
3 - Indifferent - you can buy the expansion but it changes or adds very little to the base game, so you can perfectly live without it
4 - Harmful - the expansion makes the base game worse, increasing the game length or complexity or adding any elements that make the game worse anyhow, without improving its value.
You vote in which of the 4 you think applies better, so the users will know what is the most common opinion about the expansion.
This geeklist is made to be dynamic, with anyone free to add new expansions to it. I merely added the ones I felt I was able to vote and then submitted my own vote.
In principle I avoided small promos or tiny expansions, that add just a few tiles or cards. In general they are collector items and don't add much value to the base games, but if anyone feels that they may be noteworthy, then feel free to add them.
Some people showed doubts about how to add a poll to a geeklist item. As it's somewhat tricky, I reproduce the instructions below:
At this time, polls have some bugs with GeekLists. The details are not clear. You do not seem to be able to directly add a poll to a geeklist, or to a geeklist comment. However, you can get there the long way round. First of all, go to a normal (non-Geeklist) forum thread. Hit reply (not quick reply - you do not get the button then). Hit the green tick button to add the poll. Enter the details as above and hit save. Your forum reply will have the poll text ((in the format [poll="xxxxx"] where xxxxx is the poll number)). Copy this text, and post it into your geeklist item or comment. You do not need to post the comment to the forum thread - as soon as you have copied the poll text, you can cancel.
When you use these instructions, be careful to link a brand new and singular poll (with a new number) to each new geeklist entry.
Based on data submitted here I created another geeklist with the 50 best expansions that I'll try to update from time to time.
