I really enjoy reading the favourite games lists other people write, and also lists of most anticipated games. But I thought it might be interesting to look at this from the opposite point of view. So here follows a short summary of the last 20 games my husband and I haven't kept, and why we let them go. Well, that's 17 games, plus three associated expansions...

My husband liked it, I didn't. We bought this soon after our entry into the world of board gaming nearly ten years ago, moving from Carcassonne to Agricola to this. We tried it several times, but eventually sold it as it just wasn't growing on me. I've not played Caylus in a long while having made a bad association with it, but now that several years have passed I sometimes wonder if I should give it another go. Motivation to do so is very weak however - Caylus made an appearance at our local game group not so long ago and I certainly didn't regret choosing to play Castles of Burgundy instead.

Another one we got rid of several years ago. My overall memory of this is every time we had a different number of players we had to consult the rules - there seemed to be an individual variant for each number of players. Not one I have missed.

We picked this up cheap and enjoyed it for a little while. But the whilst the wooden bridges were a lovely component the board never sat flat and we constantly struggled with the other pieces sliding off the squares. The bridges are a very loose theme, it was probably too abstract for my tastes.

I wanted to like this so much more than I actually did. I loved the silly monsters, but some rules such as the big item limits and what you can or can't carry at any one time were never really very clear. It was perhaps fun when we were new to the hobby but we quickly outgrew it.

I bought the 2006 reprint of this for my husband as a birthday present one year. It was just too abstract for me and the novelty of the magnets wore off after the first few game plays. Plus I was forever ironing the fabric game board to get the wrinkles out of it - with out much success. Interesting, that's the second game on this list where the inability of the board to sit flat on the table proved detrimental.

We mostly played this two player, although we did get the opportunity to play with four one time. If we acquired it today I suspect it might enjoy a longer residency with us, but we went through a massive de-cluttering two house moves ago and this game hadn't captured our imagination enough to justify keeping it.

I think we acquired this as a two player friendly taster of the minimum three player game Puerto Rico. I found it really dry and the theme didn't do much for me. I think my husband would have liked to have kept it, but this game was another victim of the great house move declutter.

This is probably the only one on the list that I wish we had kept, but easy come, easy go. My husband picked it up off a friend at work, but as our board game playing was almost exclusively two player at the time it seemed a bit pointless to keep it. Since then we have joined a local game group so we would have had ample opportunity to enjoy it. I'm sure some of the other folks there have a copy so doubtless we will get a chance to play it soon. If my husband feels strongly enough about replacing it I suspect we will pick up the Avalon version for a bit of variety.

I really like the way this game plays but for me it is really let down by its lacklustre artwork. To some extent I feel judging a game by its artwork is a bit like judging a book by its cover - there are some great games out there that have mediocre components, like Castles of Burgundy for example, but whilst I love CoB, Between Two Cities was just too dull to overcome. Although we could have taken it to our game group, it was not helped by it being a three player game, with an unexciting two player variant, which meant it was never getting played at home.

I've no objection to the theme of curious kittens getting themselves into perilous situations and accidentally blowing me up with them. But I'm not a fan of what I believe is called the oatmeal. It was sitting on the shelf being neglected so it was time for it to go.

And there is no use for the expansion without the base game. Interestingly the expansion sold first.

I seem to be one of the few people that doesn't like Hive. As I have played more games, I have come to realise that I'm not really a massive fan of the abstract genre. And the creepy crawly theme does nothing to alleviate this for me in Hive.

At first we really enjoyed this, but fast forward several years and it just isn't enjoyable anymore. I think these days I prefer to earn my victory points through more strategic play.

But changing preferences aside, the game has never been well balanced. Too many times we have played this and someone has been stuck without a bunny on the table. We tried house ruling it to overcome this but we have now lost interest in trying to correct it. We enjoyed it whilst we had it but it is time to move it on to a new owner who will hopefully get more out of it than us.

Prior to selling the base game, we sold Chocolate bunnies as we felt it added too many new rules for little benefit. We also went to a lot of trouble some years ago to obtain red bunnies, which did help to improve the game for some time. But not enough to earn a forever place on the games shelf.

I don't understand the buzz surrounding this game. I think it has the most amazing art work and that's probably why we kept if for so long. And I love the bunny scoring track. I believe we played it three times in total, and each time I couldn't wait for it to end.

We played with different sets of people, including my non-gamer brother who was both very entertaining and really good at it. And I still didn't really enjoy it. I'm not sure to what extent the various people who have played with us have enjoyed it either. My brother's feedback was that he would not want to play this with his fellow non-gamer friends as he thinks the on the spot pressure to come up with a suitably helpful but not too obvious phrase/story would really put them off.

All that aside, it is a three player game and that's not much use to my husband and I at home, so eventually we sold it.

Despite being described as the definitive edition, I just didn't enjoy this as much as the original Machi Koro. Six landmarks make the game last far too long, and it loses momentum in the middle. We tried it with different numbers, from 2 to 5 and there didn't seem to be a good spot. I did like the improved market for buying cards though. In the end we felt there would be better games for the same money and so we sold it as part of a job lot of games to free up some space for some new ones.

We had been carrying around a copy of this for many years, until we recently realised that the layer of dust Agricola was accumulating might be a sign it has over stayed its welcome. We bought this early on in our board gaming career and initially played it a lot, often with friends as well. But I have always found the game to be very dry. This has not improved over the years, even though both my husband and I now favour medium-heavy weight euros.

I'm also not a fan of the need to do a bit of everything in order to avoid losing points, and I'm even less a fan of the constant need to feed. I've heard Caverna may be better suited to folks who complain of such issues, so I'm keen to try that out soon. Plus cave dwelling dwarves has got to be more engaging than medieval farming. I hope so, I am in need of an emotionally corrective Rosenberg experience.

This was the most recent game to be shifted from our collection. We played through the early scenarios but neither of us felt particularly caught up in it. Although we play a bit of Eldritch Horror, I think Cthulhu is not really our thing. I was also very put off by the discovery that you can't play with all character combinations without buying another base set. Perhaps this is just as well, as if we had enjoyed it, there may have some unwanted financial implications associated with following a living card game.
