Often, when a game gets republished, there are some changes made.
Sometimes these changes are minor, but it also happens that there is a total graphic make-over, or some additional rules are made, or even a complete new theme is chosen.
Occasionally the new edition can be seen as a complete new game and there are always discussions here going on about games that should, or should not get a separate entry.
I do not want to discuss in to what extent a republishing should be considered as a new game or not, but I am only curious about which edition do you prefer and why? And also, which edition do you actually own?

The follow types of games will fit in this lists:
- second editions with new graphics and or rules
- re-themed games which are marked as new games
- re-implementations of games which are marked as new games

So please feel free to join the discussion and add some games that fit on this list as well.

vs. Medina (second edition)

The second edition really looks nice and have some updated rules.

I do not really prefer the one or the other, but got the first edition because it is quite widely available for a decent price.

vs. Domaine

This is one of the games that inspired me for this list.

The original game got republished in a more streamlined, but according to some players, also more shallow version.
I really would like to try once the original edition, but I own the second edition. Again this is mainly because of availability issues.

I really prefer the theme of the original game and still would like to get this version. A friend of my owns the second version and this is the one that we always play. It is still a great game (one of the best I would say), but the first version is still on my wishlist.

This game got published in different editions with different graphics.
I really love the Ravensburger edition with the Art Nouveau graphics. The Dutch market however is full of the edition with the silly animals (even the original theme is not anymore present in this version). On the one hand I really would like to get the Ravensburger version for the graphics AND for the theme. On the other hand I did not want to pay to much for what in the end is a small card game, so I own a stupid animal version for which I paid only a few euros, but on the end is exact the same game.

I am a big Dune fan and would love to own and play the original game. However I do not want to pay the prices that are currently asked. There is a reprint, but the re-theme alone makes that I am totally not interested in that one.

In this case I really chose for the second edition because of the updated rules, which makes the game better. If you read the comments on this game, my opinion seems to reflect quite well the general opinion about the second edition.

vs. the new edition.

The old edition seems to be the more popular overall. I paid a price for which I could get a new game as well for the old edition, but I do not regret since it is a really nice (although a bit simple) race game. The old edition is more challenging due to changes that are made in the tracks in the new edition.

I bought my copy when the game was new, so I paid $16.99 for a card game in an inexpensive plastic box. I love the artwork on the colorful edition and very much dislike everything about the Black Box edition. And the game itself is one of my favorites.

I run the WBC tournament in this game.

When the Fantasy Flight version came out I thought it might inspire new playes--I haven't had one yet in the 4 years since.

Add to the The "Standard Version" is really, really, bad and the new artwork (clearly decided people who didn't try to play the game on.) is very difficult to play the game on.

Third edition pictured, because that's what I currently own - although I have previously owned both the first and second editions as well.

There is an interesting progression for this game, as it has three different versions released.

The Fury of Dracula (1987)

The original release was out of print for a long time and had become quite a grail game (fetching silly prices) in the early 2000s. But the game design had some issues: the hunters had a difficult job, as Dracula could be extremely difficult to find depending on experience levels and play styles.

[I sold my copy because it was just too difficult to get on the table, but if you have a group who understands how the game works and doesn't mind taking the time, this might still be my favorite version.]

Fury of Dracula (second edition) (2005)

When Fantasy Flight Games released a modern update, it was much different. By forcing Dracula to maintain a trail of cards which could be revealed if the hunters visited that location, the game changed from a hunt into a chase - and the game balance rapidly swung in favor of the hunting team. Most people liked the development changes, and the game tended to be quicker and easier to teach.

[Frankly, I was disappointed. Too much errata and special conditions introduced, and far too easy for the hunters in my opinion. Traded my copy, didn't regret it; some people prefer this version though.]

Fury of Dracula (third/fourth edition) (2015)

Later, Fantasy Flight Games released an updated third edition. This release was similar to the second edition in many ways, but more streamlined. There seem to be fewer exceptions and errata to worry about, and gameplay seems even quicker than the previous revision. Complaints seem to be related to balance, with some people feeling that Dracula has it too easy - especially if he goes to sea late in the game to advance the end game clock with minimal risk.

[Currently, my preferred version. It's easier and quicker to play than the original, so more likely to get on a table. It improves some of the issues I had with 2nd edition, and is fun even if it does have a few flaws.

Most of the complaints I've read seem to be over minor issues, and many of those issues appear to be based on individual playing style. Maybe worth noting that I think the hunters *should* have a hard time to win and that all three versions have some flaws, so picking the best version for you probably depends on what type of issues you are willing to overlook.]

Unfortunately, FFG has lost the publishing rights at that start of 2017, so this looks like it's going out of print again and will soon be unavailable. Once that happens, people will probably be forced to take whichever version they can get.

I'm a form-follows-function guy. I've never tried the newer edition, but I don't like what I see. It seems that with the future planned expansions they are continuing to provide releases in the old editions. I am so thrilled by that (if it weren't for the artwork, I wouldn't mind replacing my collection with the new edition; god knows how many times other companies have "forced" me to do this).

After Z-Man Games published the first edition for CGE, there was a general dissatisfaction with the $50 or $60 (I don't recall) price tag given the poor-to-middling quality of components and artwork. That year or the next, CGE dropped Z-Man and decided to handle their own publishing in North America. They published a second edition of Tash-kalar with cardboard that was thicker, and artwork that had more art and work. Oh, and they lowered the cost by at least $10. For people with the first edition, they published an upgrade pack which was sometimes given out for free.

My 1977 Eon edition might be worth something if it were in mint condition, but I'll take my set with the torn box and the couple of missing tokens and other blemishes because of all the enjoyment it has provided over the years. I have tried the later editions, but for some reason everyone I know who has been offered the choice would rather play with the old set....

The story of 51st State:

51st State: Came out in 2010. Not super great rulebook or iconography, but if you dug in, it was a fun tableau builder.

The New Era: Billed as an "expansion" to 51S, this actually reworked the game, adding more interaction. The "Winter" expansion really rounded out the design.

Imperial Settlers: Built on the TNE engine, this streamlined the rules and iconography, plus added asymmetrical factions. Unlike the previous two, it really took off.

51st State: Master Set: A reworking of the original 51st State, using a lot of the Imperial Settlers changes but still maintaining some of the elements from the original game(s). Biggest difference from IS is that the factions decks are gone. Biggest difference from original games is the loss of the "rule of three".

Preferences? The Master Set is my go-to. It's far easier to teach, learn, and retain. It's a really well-done package. I liked IS at first, but it always made me wish I was playing The New Era, and I really don't like what's happened with expansions to it.

HOWEVER, The New Era/Winter will always be the version that's closest to my heart, and anyone who'll still play it with me will be my friend forever.
