Put those Boardgames down!

It's TV time yet cardboard is still on my mind.

I believe a key piece of a successful Television Game Show is the ability to play along at Home. I think Codenames would be perfectly suited to this format.

What games are ripe for the TV Treatment?

Television (and other media) is known for it's many Tropes like the "Mean Boss" and the "bottle episode".

What are some great Boardgame tropes?

What are some horrible Boardgame tropes that need to die?

Controversially I hate arbitrary catch-up mechanics. Chess did fine without them.

As our Hobby continues it path to world domination it pops up more and more in standard TV fare. Where have you seen it used, and how ere we portrayed?

I love how in The Girl on the Train Boardgames were featured prominently along with other extravagant purchases.

3D televisions, curved screens, 4k, UHD, HDR, Smart, COLOR!

Everyday there is new tech gimmick to make me buy a television.

What Boardgame gimmicks are great and what needs to go away.

I loved the wheels in T'Zolkin, but hate having to have an APP to play my boardgame.

Lastly as we break from the Television and pursue more noble past times, what long form essay should we petition Huber to write next?

I vote for a history of Acquire rule and board changes with pros and cons for every iteration.

Though a history of Pit might also suffice...

We do watch the NFL, which is strange because it is an exploitative, concussion-filled, body-injuring, violent game.

At the same time, some other part of me finds it compelling when I start watching. If I don't start watching it, I don't miss it.

Are there any games that you logically don't like, but when ever you play it, you enjoy it?

skippen's Week(s) that Was/Were:

Face 2 Face Games:

N/A   Ottoman Sunset -- really enjoy this solitaire game. It just works for some reason.
8   1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight -- one of my favorite 18XXs, and apparently one I seem to know as my last 3 plays have all garnered wins. I have no idea how, but they have.
7   Potion Explosion x2 -- the marbles are fun.
8.5   Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 x2 -- this weekend we finally finished our campaign. 19 games, about 1 year and 1/4. Great game, great times, and but we are very glad to be done for now.

8   Arboretum -- forgot what a thinky game this can be. My first game with 4. I think its probably better with 2 and 3, but still very enjoyable.

PBEM (in progress):
1835 -- still chugging along. I tried something this last turn, and I hope it works out, but we haven't gotten to an OR to see if it was fortune or folly.

On the nightstand (currently reading):
The Speed of Dark, Elizabeth Moon
Those Who Hunt the Night, Barbara Hambly

In the life and Times of skippen: Life has calmed down a bit finally. Mom came home from rehab a couple weeks ago, and slowly she is healing back to normal. There will probably be some residual effects due to her age, but she is at least, in personality, back to being mom.

Highlights of games played 5/9-5/15:

Nothing nearly as exciting as Lorna's adventures, I fear. (I have a plan, where Megan & I kidnap my sister-in-law, who's from Japan, and make a trip to Tokyo that includes a trip to the TGM. No idea if or when it will happen...)

神道 (Shintoh) (Joe=1) - Simple, and not very interesting, bidding game. Oh, and as a bonus with a silly memory element included. And I say that as someone who enjoys memory elements...

BUS (Joe=2) - Enjoyable game - but not one worth endless repetition.

SeaFall (Joe=11) - I've been on the verge of being done with this for a while; now I'm done. Up until now, I've avoided spoilers. When the other table, who's ahead of us, had interesting things happen - I listened right in. And rejoiced in the confetti.

Columbus Was Wrong (Joe=1) - Exceptionally cute item that wishes it was a game.

7 Symbols, and 7 Nations (Joe=11) - Glad to play this with four again - it's so much better as a partnership game.

1846: The Race for the Midwest (Joe=201) - Looking forward to my 411th play.

Recent Plays!

Mottainai (x2): The epic grudge matches continue! I keep winning this one, though one game Paul realized that he totally could have won if he would have played one more turn. I love how crucial it is to control when the game ends and the added surprise of backorders, which have been determining the winner more often.

War of the Ring (Second Edition): Love this game, but this wasn't a great play. Paul is still learning all the extra rules/nuance of the Free Peoples side and I wasn't paying super close attention last game either. We also took a break for dinner near the end of the game and it just lost all momentum. So we are planning on redeeming this one over the weekend.

Lignum: Got to learn this one last night now that our regular weekly gaming couple nights are back on track. Really fun game! I enjoyed the planning puzzle and the logistics of trying to get everything finished on time. I'll be helping out with the Capstone booth at Origins, so if you will be attending, come say hi and I can tell you all about this one!

Other weeknight gaming:
Patchwork
Hanamikoji
Matcha

Gateway Game Night:
We had a friend over for dinner and to introduce her to some new games! She has previously only played TTR a couple of times and was excited to learn some new ones.
Herbaceous: I absolutely adore this game as a gateway!
Lotus
Sushi Go Party!: This one was one of her favorites!
Flamme Rouge
