One of my favorite events is SoCalGamesDay, a once every 2 or 3 months gaming event put on in the San Fernando Valley area. I had to leave on the earlier side, but I'd say there was about 60-70 people there.

If you live within driving distance of The Valley then you really need to check it out.

This is a new purchase of mine, and my son and I taught Erin, Lincoln and Nikki. We're still working with the simple rules, so it didn't last long. But, I like it.

I bumped into an old acquaintance at Game Empire a while ago, and told him to come to SCGD. I was pleased to see he came, and he joined us for Guillotine. I think he won. Nice-n-easy game, with a fun theme.

Ended up playing this twice, once with Neal (old friend) and some other folks, and again with Mark Johnson and his son. I'm too confrontational for this game, and I lost both times.

Mark Johnson and his son arrived, and he taught my boy and me Mamma Mia. Fun game, I think I'll have to pick it up, and I won. Although, it was an asterisked victory because I hadn't been following a crucial rule for half the game.

I had gotten this off of Mark in a math trade a while ago, and have really been enjoying it with my boy, so we taught Mark and his son the game. I like it as a relatively quick game with some nice elements. Great game to introduce some 'typical' gamery mechanics without too much weight.

Mark had won this in a math trade so he wanted to give it a try. My second time playing, so I did better at it. Winton joined us which was good because he knew how to play. Nice to play a game with Win before he moves away.

Winton is one of the good guys in gaming, he'll be missed by quite a few people I'm sure.

Played this with Rich, Marty, Tim, and Jonathan. I think we all liked it well enough, but all agreed that the sweet spot for the game is probably 4. When the rules acknowledge that 5 is a bit slow and provide an (odd at best) variant suggestion for 5, you should take the hint.

Heidi taught this game to Steven and John (first time GamesDay'ers) and me. I enjoyed the experience, and probably like this one better than other Catan games, but it is still Settlers of Catan and manages to make barbarian tribes attacking Rome non-confrontational.

Probably my favorite of the day, but I have no idea how I won. Steven, John, Terry and I played this game, which is a cool game with a whole bunch of things going on, and seemingly way too many ways to earn and spend victory points.

Played this with Ron, Tarynne, Marsha and Bill. Ron and I enjoyed it pretty well, but Bill seemed to think there was no way to plan. I felt the opposite. Once I got the rhythm of the game it was pretty easy to set up a win. Fun little pirate game.

Not even thinking to write their names down, I played this with three fellas who I don't remember meeting. This was my third time through and I think I probably said those words a little too often. I really dig this game, though I wasn't getting draws that were very helpful to my cause. One player was able to set up a temple early in the game and there was never a time where I felt like I could affect his day. He won with eight points while there was a three way tie for the other players at five.

I'd only played the original map once, and apparently this one came with new rules so... I remember that Barbara and Heide were playing in this one, and two guys whose name tags I can't recall seeing. I think one of them was named Ron.

I went all green this time around, started in the Southwest corner of the map. Not having to buy resources worked pretty well for me, but then the one that I'll call Ron got in a bidding war over the big green station. I mean it was ridiculous because I think I paid eighty-seven bucks for it. I was perhaps a little too tenacious. It left me with not enough money to build cities to power.

As it went, I believe Heide took us all by surprise, building up to her fifteenth city a turn before a few of us were ready to do the same.

Playing again with Ron, Tarynne, Marsha and Bill. It was a choice between that and Settlers - Rome, and I think I was just more in the mood for the showdown. I don't think most of the players had played before, but I was especially lucky to get card bonuses from most lounges and most three-cornered and four-cornered red squares, which while we mentioned it early on, most of the players had really not worked on.

There was some close action. I made a mistake when renovating my casino my casino. I thought I was connected all the way across when I hadn't noticed that my lounge didn't connect to a door at my casino. I guess in the end it didn't keep me from winning. If you're working on a few different angles in this game, you can get just lucky enough. It might go differently next time I play with these folks.

Another little Knizia marvel. There were a bunch of us milling about for a game and a few of us had gotten together. It was Erin and Kevin and Erin's roommate whose name-tag I can't remember. on Then we were joined by a player who I'd met once or twice, but wasn't wearing a name-tag. He moderated the first night of Werewolf at Gamex and I'd guess his name was John. Don't quote me on that.

After not fully understanding the scoring in the first epoch, not building many pyramids or "hiring" many farmers, but setting myself up in camel provinces and stealing from the pot every round, I was in a really clear last at three points, but with a decent amount of money. John (don't quote me again) was around 25 points while the other players floated around the teens. So with my measly score, I had a lot of catching up to do. I remember that Erin was a regretted giving John an easy tie for something which gave him as many points as it did.

Luckily I was pretty handy with my money. Now that I saw how scoring worked, I knew I'd have to force people to buy my former areas (I ran them like a third world country, I quipped) while bidding high to take on their already developed states. Kevin had just a little more money than me, so he outbid me for a prime piece of real estate and I ended up taking the next best section, the one with the two temples. Both Kevin and I, having stolen from the sacrifices jar all through the previous epoch were unfamiliar with how much to sacrifice, but having enough money to do so were able to keep it high for the rest of the game.

I never once saw one of the three point bonus cards, though I tried to build with them in mind. Getting any of them could have been helpful, but I was really working the halves of the board, all north and mostly to the west of the nile, and creating three sets of pyramids that thankfully were played their during the first epoch. While Erin, John and her roommate were had to build up my old third-world states. Kevin was working his way around the board pretty easily too.

In the end, everyone was surprised at how evenly the game ended. I gave a little too much money during the last sacrifice because I didn't realize that just giving a dollar would have given me a free card. It might have made the difference because I came second to Kevin in most cash and then after my three sets of pyramids and all the other bonuses I had thirty three points: respectable!

The other players however were just a little bit more respectable overall. It was a close match with all the other players ranging just under forty. I don't really remember who won, but generally it was a pretty cool game!

What a great little party game. With enough stragglers at the end of the night to set up three teams of three. I played with Winton (who was wearing a name tag that said Hector) and Cristina on my team. There were enough players that I didn't get most of the names, but I remember there was a team with two Eddies on it.

This was a lot like a party game that I already played, but with a much shorter time limit. At least the game I'd played was a lot like the first round. The second and third rounds were a bit deeper.

Winton made sure to tell us he wasn't as good with actors as with other types.

Apparently the only clue beside junk bonds that people got about Michael Milken, was that a cow gives something that sounds like his name. I would never have gotten that one. And then a comic strip character that I didn't really know, Snuffy Smith. Apparently all of the guys couldn't differentiate between Mariah Carey and Liza Minelli. Both of them being singers with boobs. I never got a chance to do my Cabaret impression. And most of my team, (though the other teams did seem to) got my wordless impression of Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind.

Of the three teams, we came in second. Just two points behind the winning team. Good times!

I arrived a little late and left early but managed to play a few games. Patrick and I played Twilight Struggle. My Soviets couldn't manage to do much and Patrick's U.S. won handily, with the game going the full ten turns.

I played several hands of this with Patrick, Jason, and Barbara. A fun little game. I like the "push your luck" aspect and the fact that some of the cards are dealt out of the deck before play. In a couple of hands I think I must have set a record for high score (a bad thing in this game as low score wins) in a four-player game, but I had fun.

Third time playing this sort of "Samurai Lite". In Arkadia, everyone scores when a building is closed off, and so the key issue becomes getting as many men to score as frequently as possible. Marty ran away with it, lining himself up frequently for multiple seals per man.

Although I don't like blind bidding games, I like this because the variability is limited and because the key of the game is more strategic. Players build houses in six different areas by winning bids - but timing is the key as the sooner you reach a critical mass of houses in an area, the cheaper it is to reach your victory conditions.

Carcassonne for adults. Carcassonne borrowed the basic elements of this game, but stripped out the signature Kramer/Kiesling multiple action choices. This is a rich underappreciated game. We had a blast, consistently attacking and undermining each others' positions. I was off to a strong start, but Tim soon got the hang of things, attacked like crazy, and took an impossible lead in the second scoring round.

We did this as a quick filler. A sort of miniatures-oriented race game in which players must make visual judgements in order to maneuver their racers.

Tim seemed to be running away with this, taking 10 dice when I had only 7. But when he played for victory, I had many more manipulation powers and was able to achieve a fantastic score. Tim came back, and had an uphill battle to beat me, quickly running out of dice that would match his 6's. Then on the last rolls he magically rolled a double 6 to rescue the victory. Darn!

Oh God. This is a party game which is better in concept than execution. The basic idea is that one player will randomly create a riddle based on a question card and two noun cards. Example: how do you make a *slug* more like a *disc jockey*? Players then write down their best answers to this "joke" and the judge picks the best two.

Unless Larry David is at your party, you may want to pass on this one.
