I cannot take credit for this idea, someone on facebook mentioned it ...

Taking normal hobby games that you play with your friends, have you taken those games and modified them, made them simpler, so that you could play them with your younger kids. If so, put the game below and describe what rule changes you made, to make it work.

1) I changed the victory condition of the game to be the first person to get to 30 coins.
2) I eliminated all the extra cards in the game, but I kept the movement cards.
3) Also kept the rule where you have two cards, and you choose one to move with.
4) Kept all the rules for all the navy ships, merchant ship, and pirate ship

My 4 year old loved playing it, and we played for at least an hour, and he wanted to play for longer!

My three year olds love playing Thunder Alley. We play it as a pure roll and move. We roll a 6 sided die, count the dots, and move the car that many spaces.

It's not even competitive. We just play until we all complete one lap. They like it so much I picked up some 1:144 NASCAR cars to let them chose from.

I'm honestly so thrilled just teaching them to count, to take turns, and to respect the fact that we are playing a game together.

Definitely feels like I'm laying the groundwork.

We've played Carcassonne with my daughter since she was 4.

We just took out the rules about Farmers, so Meeples can't be placed in fields. She's now 7 and we're about to introduce the Farmers back in.

1) My son loves the cartoon, so the theme really did it for him
2) This game for the most part is language independent
3) It is co-op so it teaches great skills around working together
4) It has many missions for replayability
5) Rules are a lot like zombiecide but really boiled down and even simpler.

My son can't read yet.

Read him the effects on the cards and made up a symbol variant for each card for him that he understands.

No other changes

1) Its a deck builder and adding things to your deck to see later seems to be a lot of fun
2) The Sci-Fi spaceship thing is a fun theme for kids
3) The math is simple, so counting to 10 or 15, doing a little subtraction while you spend.
4) All you really have to do is sometimes read the text on some of the cards.

The space theme and the how cool the miniatures look is the big draw in for this game for my son.

1) We play with mission cards showing. I don't go after the the assassin cards.
2) I play with just the NPC Merchant (this gives him something else to shoot at, he likes to shoot dad)
3) Overtime he starts to learn and understand the opportunity cost of just immediately going combat, and then later investing in other things like making money. So, later he can buy bigger better weapons to shoot dad. So I like that he is learning opportunity cost, sort of ....
