Goals: 3 production, 2 Pen: no one; Fishing: Rick and Bruce; Money: Bruce

Players compete to develop the best economy in a small Japanese city. The best is judged by who has filled the most orders, completed random goals, exported the most goods, imported the most technology, and sent the most workers to church. The game ended when the church was full of worshipers. Rick spent the first few rounds hoarding goods. Jonathan was focused on the church and technology. I used goods to complete orders and then ship export goods overseas. The game is not as daunting as it appears and is medium weight.

Lauren 8, Beth 9, Aaron 11 (measurements of unhappiness)

Beth taught Uluru. In this classic puzzle game, players attempt to arrange spirit animals in positions they like. “Aaron takes five unhappiness in the first round. Lauren took four unhappiness on her worst round. Beth’s rounds were equally bad.”

Beth taught again? “Aaron built six cities and the Great Wall to protect him from invasion (is rarely rolled). Lauren had the most developed civilization. Beth had the most disasters, including an invasion.”

Rick’s Winners: Beth & Tony; Bruce’s Losers: Lauren & Aaron

While Tony, Rick and I wanted for the three doctors to emerge from the past we set up a round of Codenames, in hopes of proving that one round can be played. As we had a bit more time than we imagined Rick and I had had a near infinite storehouse of clues when the doctors emerged from their box. My first clue was Casino Royale. I targeted: Knight, Pistol, Plot, Date, and Bond. It wasn’t the first movie which jumped to mind, but I couldn’t think of the one I needed. I wanted a Dalton, but my mind couldn’t find it. My problem was Novel, Telescope, Carrot, and Bear. The first two were bystanders, the third the assassin, and the last was an enemy. Bear eliminated any Soviet spy movies, Carrot the vegetable was not the same as karat the weight, but I needed to be sure and discarded GoldFinger. Telescope was a problem because of Moonraker, the movie, not the book. (The novel is excellent) But a telescope was used in the film, but I could have then made the clue a six because we also had Engine. So failing to remember License to Kill, we got Bond, Plot, and Pistol, but they selected Novel. Our next turn I selected Edward and hoped for Lion, symbol of England, and Knight. They failed on both but suggested I use Richard, which I did on our next turn. They chose Knight and Lion, plus Date from Casino Royale. We had just Hole, Scorpion, and Engine left. They still had Bear, so den was out, but Bears do not live in burrows! I then hoped they’d pick Engine (which they mentioned with CR) so we’d win, as Blue only had two spys remaining. Codenames is not about what is right, but what the others know and if you play with a biologist, Scorpion isn’t a big leap, but to others it was. They selected Hole, but a bystander rather than Scorpion. Rick went with just a one, giving me hope we may win yet. So we had Engine and Scorpion, I had another factually correct clue, Battlemech, but would it be a good one? They guessed Engine, and a bystander. We lost.

One of my favorite Pirate themed games. I like the artwork and the gameplay reminds me of Adel Verpflichtet. “Jon and Mark were tied going into the last round. Jon lost a point in that round. Lauren learned what not to do.”

Tony thought he had played, but hadn’t. Beth led the entire game. Her casinos weren’t safe but we didn’t score those casinos when she didn’t control them. By the end she had more money than she could have used. Next time I hope to play with the expansion which will give her something to spend her funds on. I really like the thematic currency. Matt lost more money that he earned gambling. Tony thought the game lasted a bit too long.

Lauren and Rick departed leaving just three to apprehend criminals. This is a dice rolling deduction game. “We learned: Do not use the pens in this game.” Not helpful. One a turn you will roll the dice, giving information to everyone else about your hand of cards. Then you will guess who is holding a criminal in their hand. If you are correct you can continue guessing, if not then everyone has learned something. Information is recorded on a grid shown to all players.
