"There is only one game I know of which is set entirely in Hungary (my adopted homeland): Vilajet, a Hungarian-produced wargame set during the time of the Turkish invasion. Unfortunately, I've never played it as the rules are beyond my limited Hungarian and have not yet been translated into English. Nevertheless, many games feature Hungary in some small way..."

The above is what I wrote back in 2004. Since then I have learnt to read and speak Hungarian relatively well, yet no other wargames have yet been produced in Hungary. On the positive side, there have been a few published wargames set in Hungary on the battle of Mohács, the 1956 revolution and, very recently, a game on the attack of Budapest in 1944/45. More importantly, Hungarians are now designing boardgames and it is only a matter of time before we see a Hungarian-produced game set in Hungary. I personally know a Hungarian game designer who has already made at least a couple of really interesting low-complexity prototype wargames set in Hungary, and is due to publish his first boardgame (in fact a card game), albeit not with a Hungarian theme, early next year. Of course, I also have my own Hungarian-themed Eurogame sitting in a drawer waiting for me to bring it to life...

So what is the connection with Hungary, beyond the fact that Budapest, Szeged and Klausenburg feature on the map? As anyone who has read the novel will know, Jonathan Harker passed through Hungary (taking a quick walk in Budapest while waiting to change trains at Nyugati/Western Railway Station) on his way to Castle Dracula, which lay just beyond the borders of the country. He also convalesced in Budapest after escaping. Whatismore, Dracula's conversations with Harker reveal that the Count has Hungarian (to be more precise Székely/Szekler) ancestry. In fact, the connections between Hungary and the historical figure of Vlad III Dracula are stronger still. Dracula was possibly born in the Hungarian region of Transylvania and become a vassal of Hungary after seizing the throne of Wallachia. After being deposed by his own brother, Vlad was imprisoned by Hungary's King Matthias, but subsequently converted to Catholism and married a member of the Hungarian royal family.

The Austro-Hungarian empire (Hapsburgs, I beleive) play a particularly good role in this one. I always enjoyed this role over the other options but success depended on how Turkey was played. Oh okay - success depended more on how I played, but as I never succeeded very often at this game it is easier to blame the "other guy".

Attila was a Hun, and there must be some connection between Hungary and the Huns, right? Wrong! The name 'Hungary' (and related names in other languages: Ungarn, Hongrie...) is now believed to be derived from the Turkic name 'Onogur' which means "ten arrows" or "ten tribes" and refered to a people which conquered the Carpathian basin in 680 (ie 300 years before the Magyars arrived). However, there are two indirect connections between Attila and Hungary. Firstly, according to legend Attila was buried under the river Tisza (in present-day Hungary). Secondly, Attila remains a very popular first name for Hungarian boys! Having said all this, there is no connection between Attila and this very abstract game other than the title.

Many games feature a map of Europe, and so naturally Hungary is often present. But Hungary has a greater role in some games than in others, particularly those set during the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire. While Hungarian armies are not distinguished from Austrian in Paths of Glory, a number of the map spaces are in Hungary, and Budapest (as the joint-capital of the Empire) is strategically important.

Clearly the Austro-Hungarian Empire forms a significant element of the board in this game. Unfortunately, the geography within the Empire is rather bizarre, with a region roughly equivalent to present-day Hungary called 'Banat' (in fact most of the Bánát is in present-day Romania), and the region called 'Ungarn' stretching rather too far to the east. On the plus side, there is a counter named after a Hungarian general.

Apparently there is a Hungary card in this game. Unfortunately the 13th Century wasn't one of Hungary's strongest (the Kingdom really suffered from the Mongol invasion), so I don't expect that Hungary plays more than a minor role in the game.

Empires in Arms is another game to prominently feature the Austro-Hungarian empire. Hungary is such a huge and wealthy province that if Austria surrendered unconditionally in a war and ceded Hungary, they'd pretty much be out of the game! Additionally, Austria possesses two special "Insurrection corps" which get to be deployed in the event that enemy corps enter Hungary, Transylvania, Military Border, or Illyria. The Insurrection corps also cannot leave those four provinces.

On another note, War&Peace is a very similar game. Last time I played a campaign game I was Austria and Russia. For the French to conquer Austria my friend needed to seize Prague, Innsbruck, Vienna, and Budapest. I was doing so hot he told me "taking Budapest is like trying to take f-ing Moscow!"

Hussars originated in 14th/15th Century Serbia (I think), but it is the Hungarian hussar which inspired the military units found in many 18th and 19th Century armies. Frederick the Great so valued his Hungarian Hussars that he issued a royal order warning the Prussian officers never to offend the self-esteem of the Hungarian hussars with insu1ts and abuses.

Hungary is very important in 3 ways: (1) it is very central to the network of areas in that it borders 8 other areas which (correct me if I'm wrong) is more than any other land area; (2) it is a neutral meeting point between Catholic and Orthodox as well as between Slavic, Germanic and Italic; (3) it is the source of the Magyar raiders which cannot be stopped until after this region is conquered.

Hungarians seem to speak a Uralic language related to Finnish, Estonian, other languages of present NW Russia and the Dravidian languages of southern India. Attempts to reconstruct a proto-Uralic from which they are all descended have been made. mtDNA and Y-chromosome testing seems to show similar relationships.

Leader card L21 is "János Hunyadi, hero, Angevin Ruler of Hungary, Black Army, Stature 2, Kingdom of Hungary". Should this character die, his replacement is "Mátyás I Cornvinus (Mattias)". This leader's bank is the Bank of Lucca, Italy, so there's another Italia-Magyarorszag connection.

On the Hungarian part of the map are shown Buda, Belgrade and Neusohl (the last a mine). There is also Edifice card E7: "Biblioteca Corvina (Buda Library) - Cardinal Bessarion of Trebizond, Patriarch of Constantinople".

I think there is a role in this game for Bethlen Gabor, born 1580 in Hungary and Calvinist vassal of the Ottoman Sultan. With Turkish support he made war on the Habsburgs to conquer large parts of Hungary which encouraged the Protestant King Friedrich V to accept the throne of Bohemia and the electors to appoint Ferdinand the emperor. These two events essentially triggered the start of the Thirty Years War.
