"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Hearts - Dust Level: 3 Years, 10 Months - I used to play Hearts almost every day in middle and high school and still enjoying card flopping it every now and then. I thought I had a win in this out of the dust game in the bag, and then things fell apart for me in the end and I finished last in what might have been the tightest point spread (about a dozen points amongst the four players) I've had ever experienced.

Kemet - Dust Level: 3 Years, 1 Month - I knew I was un-dusting this one when I played it this month, but I didn't know it was this dusty! I dusted it off so I could finally play the expansion, which I've had sitting around unplayed for quite some time. I'm glad I finally got around to it. It was a great time and I really enjoyed the new elements. I'm hoping to play this again soon and explore more of the expansion.

Ra - Dust Level: 2 Years, 3 Months - Had a chance to play the new edition. I'm not sure if they tweaked some rules with the new edition or if I'd just been doing some things wrong, but I managed to emerge with a victory, which I don't usually do with this game. I've heard the new components are a little controversial. Certainly the bid tokens are a downgrade, but the scarab iconography on the tiles is a nice addition.

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Haven't played this in ages. Wasn't that impressed the first time I tried but a friend with children around the same age as the Little Fish suggest this during a recent visit. The kids enjoyed it well enough and liked the theme but it's not something I'm ever going to get excited about playing.

So, would play again with kids but probably not of my own volition and would not purchase.

Out of the Dust, May, 2017:

Billabong
Dust level: Eight years, 3 months

The first things my friend Amador said upon seeing Billabong for the first time were 1) "What's this kid's game?" and 2) "Where's the dice?" which is hilarious because initially it does look like some kind of stupid roll-and-move nonsense where it's actually a very clever, no-luck, positional abstract. We thoroughly enjoyed our plays.

2 plays this month, 17 all-time

Starship Merchants
Dust level: Three years, 10 months

I really like this one, partly because for some reason I have a knack for winning it, but we don't pull it out very often due to a certain sameness of play when revisited too frequently.

I put this on my Countdown Challenge list hoping to play it more than last year. So far, that isn't working out too well. But I only played it twice last year and there's plenty of time to play it more.

10 Days in Europe - 4 plays
5 years, 10 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  5.5

Bought this yonks ago to "one day" teach my son about the geopolitical geography of Europe (which I was terrible at myself): after a couple of test plays with the wife, it sat there waiting. Eventually, I thought it time and it has gone down really well with my 6yo boy, to the point where, after playing, he'll try and make 40 Days Around Europe, in the style of Around the World with Willy Fog (or Phileas Fogg, if you prefer). It's still no great shakes as a game, but it's diverting enough to play and, hopefully, the geography will stick.

Animal Upon Animal - 1 play
2 years, 0 months, 4 days

Having been out on a (very) extended loan, this classic kids game came back out and remains good, simple, fun.

Jaipur - 5 plays
1 year, 9 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  7.5

One of the wife's favourite two player games, it saw a physical play just before the app came out. It's still an excellent 2p game; and the app can be challenging on its hardest AI level.

Snake Oil - 1 play
1 year, 7 months, 23 days
Current Rating -  6.5

My preferred game in this genre: keep it quick when it's played and don't get it to the table too often and all should have a good time. I sold But Wait There's More which didn't work for my group at all and wasn't too impressed with Funemployed. Can't understand why this isn't still in print: it's the best of the bunch

Diamonds - 1 play
1 year, 6 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  7

One of my game group (in her early 20s) said, "What's a trick-taking game?" Well, that meant I had to bring Diamonds the following week: a very easy entry into the genre. It was well received (and she won!). We played for the first time with the Thief (just used an oversized pawn from my bits box) which was liked by 5/6 of the players as a way of mitigating the pick-on-me nature of the club suit action.

OddVille - 1 play
1 year, 4 months, 23 days

Suffering from not being able to get this played, I re-learned it with my 6yo son: he proved to be surprisingly good competition! It seems to me that it'll be about manipulating the guild powers, especially as they're points, too, at the end. But, without a game or two with gamers, that's just supposition. Hopefully it'll get some proper play time soon.

Ginkgopolis - 1 play
1 year, 2 months, 24 days

Ha! The irony: I requested this game because A) it's good, B) the owner wanted to get it played and C) I messed up the first choice (choose power cards) last time around. Only, I couldn't remember what I did wrong last time and so proceeded to do the exact same thing again and came in a predictable last as my engine ran out of meeple-fuel half way through. It's a good game and I want to play it properly some time: just have to not be such a putz.

No Thanks! - 2 plays
1 year, 0 months, 29 days
Current Rating -  8

Still a cracking filler: if you haven't got it, buy it. Played after a good but draining play of Bootleggers, the two experienced players won the two rounds, which goes to show skill counts; plus we won them in very different ways. Yes, please!

It's been at least four years, probably more like 6, since I had played this one.

A close friend of mine is really into WWII history and we bought this together back in 2010. This was our first war game and it took us forever to learn how to play.

We picked up on the basic rules much faster than i expected. We relearned it and had a 6 board scenario done in under two hours.

WWII wargames is something we always talk about getting into, but never actually getting around to doing it. I just recently bought Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles and i've had No Retreat! The Russian Front sitting on my shelf since 2012 unplayed as well.

It doesn't help that he doesn't really enjoy learning games from the rule book as we sit there and try to go through them. He has a much better time when i already know most of the rules and can teach him. So I try to learn them ahead of time. It can be a bit daunting with war games.

"I was very happy to get a hold of a copy of this earlier on. A unique game. I really like the give good actions one place in hopes that they leave you the actions you want in another."

Dust level = 3 years and 7 months.

I can't believe it's actually been this long, I do enjoy this game. I have been lugging it around to game nights/days for about a month and finally people were interested in playing it.

Still very unique game, makes me want to dust off Oasis now.

This marks my 5th play and I rate it an 8

On the Underground

"Not another rail game? But, somehow it pulls it off. It's got enough to hook you in, yet it's simple enough to even be a family game too."

Dust level = 3 years and 7 months.

Same month last played as above. While I say in my comments that it pulls off being another rail laying game. Well in the end it is just another rail laying game.

Another game I have been lugging around. A 'new to gaming' person was at the game day, so it was perfect.

This makes my 8th play and I rate it an 9.

Biblios

"So here goes, my comment/review:

I'm becoming a big fan of independently produced games. This is no disappointment. The cards, box, etc. are of good quality. The rules are well written (although they may be on to small side print wise). The box is a perfect size for the components. Is this really all that?

It's a really interesting auction game. I very much enjoy the two very distinct phases to this game. The first phase, is really a 'drafting' of the hands (pot). In this phase you get an interesting choice of what you want versus what you are willing to give your opponents, versus what you think you might want to bid for in the second phase of the game.

The second phase is building your scoring hand for the end. The cards in your hand can be used to 'bid' on cards or just saved for end game scoring. Gold cards are used to buy paintings and Bishops. And any combination of cards can be used to 'buy' gold cards. Gold cards are only used in tie breakers at the end, so they are often better to use then save. But, again, you don't know if something better is going to com up later.

End scoring is simple. Who ever has built the best collection in each of the 5 categories scores the value of that 'collection'. The only problem is those values will change based on the selection of the bishops. All collections start at a value of 3. When Bishops come into play either in the 1st or 2nd phase. The bump up or down the value of 1 or 2 collections.

That's the game. Fun, quick game."

Dust level = 2 years and 10 months

It's a decent game. But, as a filler I just don't think of it much.

This was my 16th play, I still rate it a 7.

Rattus

"Did I mention I like Area Majority games?

Very 'clean' good fun. A quick romp though Europe. Simple system that can get you a good area majority game in under an hour."

Dust level = 2 years and 2 months.

OK, it's not REALLY an are majority game, more of a group joke about it.
Surprised it's been so long. I enjoy this one. As a note (to be discussed further in last item) I may have played it more recetnly on Yucata.

This was my 13th play and I still rate it an 8.

Greed

Dust level = two years

No comments? I just don't have much to say about this game. A decent filler, just doesn't get me excited to play.

This was my 6th play. I lowered it from a 7 to a 6.

Subdivision

Dust level = 2 years

Interesting tile placement game, but nothing great. I don't actually own it, but did recently give this copy to a friend for a birthday gift.

This was my 2nd play and I am keeping it rated a 7 (for now)

Fearsome Floors

"fun simple game. Can be annoying when you are playing with someone that takes it seriously, yet can't see the way the monster moves. It should be played with people that can look at the board and follow where the monster 'should' go. Of course that's before you start screwing each other with placement of your pieces."

Dust level = 1 year and 4 months (although also see last game)

My wife wanted to play a quick game with the family. Boy was she wrong. Why does each time we play this take longer and longer?

This is my 16th play and I lowered the rating from a 6 to a 5.

Masons

"Very fun quick game. With still some tense choices from time to time."

Dust level = 4 years

Ok, well how can I say 4 years? I play this a TON on Yucata. But, even though I do play on Yucata, I don't feel it gives me the same experience as sitting around the board with people.

This is my 14th play (I log FtF plays only) and I rate it a 8.

Nothing particularly dusty out of my own collection (although I did get to play Kaleidos from someone else's collection after several years), just a few games that crept over the year mark between plays.

Betrayal at House on the Hill - 15 months dusty

Being a thematic game means it doesn't table as much as the euros, given the game group I primarily play with. I knew this was a favourite of one of the teenagers in the group, so suggested it at a games day when I was playing with her.

London - 13 months dusty

I'm not that enamoured with many Wallace games, finding them a bit too dry for me, and although I don't mind this from time to time I think once a year is about right!

Waggle Dance - 13 months dusty

This was really popular when it first came out, just not with my husband, who is my primary games opponent. That coupled with the fact that there isn't much replayability between games means it's now been over a year since the last play, and this might be a game going on the trade pile at some point in the future.

Nothing archaeological this month, but a good mix of fairly dusty games.

Citadels - 1 year
I got out Citadels for a friendly four-handed session, where I cleaned up.

Martian Coasters - 1 year
Three quick plays of this dice-driven pyramidal abstract. Prp (in costume) won the set.

Medici - 9 months
A single three-player session of this Knizia auction game that I won resoundingly.

Kamisado - 8 months
We played a 3-point match, a 7-point match, and our first-ever "marathon" match to 15 points. The last of these took 90 minutes. Prp, who used to be a threat in small matches, while reliably failing due to lack of stamina in longer ones, is now capable throughout.

Chaos Marauders - 8 months
Prp stomped me in this orcish luck-fest.

Pandemic: The Cure - 1 play

Given our recent successes with Pandemic we should probably have started this on a harder difficulty. That being said we're not even sure that playing this on the hardest would have challenged us and the dice seem to roll perfect results for us all the way. I feel that whilst this is quicker than Pandemic it's also too variable. Not owned by me.

Ah Last Will, one of my favourite eurogames this one fell into the dust purely because of Prodigals club. Thankfully having not played it for ages I was no longer beating everyone else soundly (possibly due to a few expansion related misplays by me) - in fact I ended up coming second on the tie breaker.

The Bloody Inn - 1 play
First Published 2015

An interesting game of managing murder and burying the corpses under a new annex. Moment's of - oh, the cops are here. I can't hide every body so I guess I'll just have to murder or bribe the cops. If I bribe them they can help me murder everyone... Or I could bribe one and use him to murder the other one. The stories that come out are often weird and wonderful, but the game lacks any real teeth. Not owned by me.

Ah Netrunner, it has been far too long. I remember when we would regularly play games tweaked with the newest cards. Then we decided that we'd sunk enough money into the game. From there we started to loose focus, and so it goes through fits and spurts. The first game here was remarkable for several reasons. It took me forever to get my rig up to the point where I was happy breaking through those walls of ICE, especially after I broke the first rule of running (especially against HB) and ended up the wrong end of Janus (4 brain damage!). From that point onwards I was meticulous and eventually managed to pull back a victory. Had he not managed to shuffle all of his agendas into the bottom half of his deck then that would have gone very badly for me. The second game was less remarkable.

Ho boy this play did not go well for me (first doubled my points). I'd forgotten the intricacies of the wheels and how they turn and I tried to avoid the skulls - but at the same time I didn't pay enough attention to the prophecies. Enjoyed but I need to concentrate better in future.

May was another one of those "low quantity, high quality" months of gaming for me. And I was happy to dust off a couple favorites.

Fairy Tale - 2 plays
First Published 2004
1 year, 4 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  8

This is a perennial favorite, and this might the longest gap in time since we played it. I'd mentioned it in passing to some new gaming friends and was surprised they'd never heard of it or played it, so I had to bring it out. The players who really like set collection were smitten.

Dice Town - 1 play
First Published 2009

Current Rating -  8.25

I don't own this game, but it's one I'm apt to ask my brother to bring when I visit Michigan. I finally broke down and found a copy for myself on the Geek market, and it went over well with friends. A fun option I always want to have at the ready because it's pretty light and moderately fast to play.

Looks like I've managed to play 7 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Boggle -- (2 this month; lots of plays 8+ years ago) _7_
(images by Gambiteer & IronMoss)

My wife loves this one: so why has it been so long? We generally play Big Boggle or Super Big Boggle; so the family is well-reported. It's just the little 4x4 grid that isn't played very often. This featured a travel set on an outdoor table at a restaurant while waiting for our food. And still entertaining after all these years.

Piece o' Cake -- (1 this month; 13 plays 50 months ago) _6⅔_
(images by fsumarc & moorwild)

Rather enjoyed this. And that despite its simplicity. It's likely not very deep (or even necessarily stable, in the face of silly decisions) but it's easy to explain, and the beginners don't appear to need to play terribly poorly.

Mogul -- (1 this month; 4 plays 48 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by Ceryon & ScottH)

Absolutely not at its best with 6 players. To the degree that I may pretend in future that it doesn't even support that number. (There are only a few "sell some shares" opportunities in the game. With 6 players their value and location are respectively random and chaotic: it's not the best result.)

Other than that, though, I like the game in principle. I'll just make sure to put it on the table with fewer participants next time.

Aztec -- (1 this month; 7 plays 36 months ago) _7⅔_
(images by Regai & nessi)

Still haven't tried the 3p variant. So this play was also prep for that possibility: I think there's a chance I might be able to try that this summer with my sons - as long as we have some 2p practice first. So this one was giving son #2 a bit of a head start before son #1 got home.

The game is quite hard to play. I find it unforgiving, and the lookahead takes work (for me.) So I've no particular skills yet either!

Ta Yü -- (1 this month; 2 plays 29 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by loopoocat & Verkisto)

It's an interesting counterpoint to Aztec: this has a similar evaluation function - but the tile draw leaves things quite a bit more random. We found this a good deal more accessible, too. Having only to play something plausible instead of Necessarily Right makes it a bit easier to contemplate.

Archaeology: The Card Game -- (2 this month; 33 plays 28 months ago) _6⅓_
(both images by Phil81)

This is one my kids enjoyed when they were little: so a nostalgia play as much as anything. It's cute, and trivial, and probably not something we'll drag out much in future, I expect.

Birth -- (2 this month; 3 plays 27 months ago) _6⅔_
(images by moromoro & Takashi Sakaue)

Hadn't thought about this for a while. Then I saw Mike Fogus describe it "Like pseudo-Backgammon from another galaxy" and felt like giving it another shot with that paradigm in mind.

And, thought of that way, it was quite charming. While I'm not (generally) fond of dice games, I do have some appreciation for Backgammon. And the balance of planning to randomness here is indeed (and pseudo-similarly) tilted in favour of the former. So: not sure I like it; but I'm coming to a grudging regard.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Monday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

I really enjoy Coal Baron. It's a solid game and should get to the table more frequently.

Trickerion: Legends of Illusion - 1 play

I love, love Trickerion. The length of the game (especially with Dark Alley and the Magician's Powers) keeps it from getting played too often.

Dust level: About 5 years.

I played a solo game of the co-op game Star Trek: Expeditions using all four of the base game characters.

I'd played it before co-op with other people, and didn't much care for it, but I decided to try it again, realizing that my expectations were probably too high when I first got it.

It was okay. Better than I remembered (now that my expectations aren’t as high for it), but still rather fiddly and bland... I may play it again at some point. There is more replayability than I expected, too because only 6 location supplemental log cards out of the deck are used each game, which means that there is a good chance of getting different ones (and combinations) each game.

Current rating = 6 (up from 5)

NINE YEARS DUSTY:

German Railways

I own the Winsome version of the game and hadn't got it to the table for a looooong while despite wanting to do so. After bringing it to HeavyCon, I got it to the table and it was quite enjoyed by the three of us in a tightly contested game which I lost by a $1-2. There was a round in the game where I had the worst score and did not get an action as can but rarely occurs in the game. I know a number of people do not care for this mechanic in the game, but I find it different and interesting. d10-8

SEVEN YEARS DUSTY:

The Climbers

Okay, I sold my copy several years ago and have regretted it. Thankfully, Capstone Games is reprinting this in the next year or so and it will hopefully be in a regular sized box this time! This play was good fun and I was crowned king of the hill in this matchup at HeavyCon. d10-8

SIX YEARS DUSTY:

Crows

This one has not aged gracefully and I remembered why I did not hold onto this one when I owned it a ways back. But, crow meeples! d10-4

FIVE YEARS DUSTY:

Ca$h 'n Gun$

Still quite fun 5 years later and the game is simpler than I remembered. If I remember correctly, there were quite a few questions about the rules when this first came out...I need to bring this one out with my student staff in the upcoming year. d10-7

FOUR YEARS DUSTY:

The Count of Monte Cristo

This one has aged a bit and I find it still drags. I think that was my comment several years ago as well. The marble mechanic is interesting but the game itself just isn't that exciting. d10-4

THREE YEARS DUSTY:

Foppen

I had sadly not played this one in California in my 7 years here despite playing it around 40 times in Michigan. I see I played it with family or visiting in MI since coming to CA, but I remedied that issue finally in May and played with 4. Prefer this with 5 or 6 but the game played well enough with 4. d10-7

TWO YEARS DUSTY:

Bargain Hunter

Brought this back into play after 2 years and it saw 6 plays in May. Played it for the first time with four players and from my perspective it is decidedly better at 3 player than with 4. Clever twists to trick-taking and points. d10-8

God's Playground

Good fun revisiting this one at HeavyCon with two others. Poland, however, fared poorly as the invaders destroyed everything except Greater Poland. Poland's armed forces generally fared poorly. d10-8

Witch's Brew

This one is quite enjoyable with 5 as you decide whether to push your luck or play safe. Of the different iterations of this game, I still find this original being far superior - at least with 5-6 people. d10-8

ONE YEAR DUSTY:

Castles of Mad King Ludwig

Can't believe it has been over a year since I last played this one! I really enjoy this one whether I win or lose just to see the different palace constructions. d10-8

Another one I haven't played in far too long. This might be my favorite hidden traitor game out right now, and this particular gaming instance was a blast. Another one that needs to get played more, as I am finding it is a pretty special game still.
