Despite our spontaneous (and understandable) enthusiasm for the games we play, don't hesitate to share some negative points, if any. It's always helpful for those who have a hard time resisting temptation whistle ....

As usual, the geeklist (and the host) will decline responsibility for the time you will spend reading the numerous items and your consecutive expenses.

There is a specific geeklist to put the blame where it belongs, though: SGoYT made me buy this!
You'll find a support group there

=== Theme of the Month ===
GAMING ..... OUTDOOR

It won't be a revelation to many, I appreciate gaming outdoor whatever the season, preferentially far from civilization (as the first item will demonstrate, it may be dangerous to play outdoor in a civilized place... cool)
With years, planning which game I would bring with me for a walk became a game within the game.

For my third time hosting the geeklist, I would like to invite some of you to attempt THE adventure : gaming away from our familiar tables lit by electrical bulbs.
Let's share outdoor pictures playing games under natural sunlight!

I realize it is winter in the antipodes and not very incentive for outdoor gaming; however you might find opportunities, who knows?

Some lovely memories over the years; from left to right : Hoplomachus TLC custom - Smokejumper – Irish Freedom – Leaving Earth (2) – Rallyman – Baseball Highlights - Hoplomachus Origins

This is my entry for the 2017 Solitaire PnP Design Contest

It's my take on a 'roll and write' game and involves building fences
across fields in order to enclose and separate the bulls in them.

There's just 1 page to print out and 1 page of rules.
I've also done a low ink (black) version.
You'll need 3 regular dice, a pen or pencil and something to draw a straight line with.

The sun was shining this evening so I played the game in the outdoors (appropriately).
I ended up with a score of 60, which just sneaks me into 'respecta-bull' category.

You can find out more at: Raging Bulls WIP
Or, to get straight into the fields, head over to: Raging Bulls v1

I played on Level 2 and lost again with a score of -15, this time towards the end of the red phase. I made an effort to be aware of the starting distribution of Robinson cards. This helped in the early game in selecting which hazards to try to win and which hazards to choose to lose.

The play area at the end:

I hadn't been able to get my life back up after the green phase and the three drawn cards were unluckily low-powered. The Robinson deck had mostly better stuff in it.

The game is highly luck-dependent because of the many dice rolls you make but i don't mind that... i love chucking dice so this is not a deal-breaker for me. Loving the game so far and hope to bring that Mother§#&%?! down eventually so that i can move on to the next abductor...

My Little Man's first real wargame play: Barbarossa Solitaire
Avatar
mbmbmbmbmb
Finished the Barbarossa Campaign with a narrow German victory. At one point I rolled 5 6 in a row on German attacks which devastated the Red Army.

Right now I am almost at the end of Case Blue which is on a knifes edge as the Germans have pushed toward Stalingrad but the Soviets are massing troops around Moscow preparing an offensive to threaten Smolensk.

After Blue, I'm going to try an early Zitadelle. I had emailed the designer asking what adjustments to make to the OB so I could try the original intent of the Germans which was to launch Zitadelle by May 1943 at the absolute latest. He sent me the information so I am eager to give it a go. I am tempted to play all the scenarios in the game (I'm on an East Front "kick" again ) but we'll see.

This really is a great game with lots of options and even though cards are involved and you can plan ahead a bit when playing alone, but I figure both sides had spies so having a bit of intel is okay in the end

So I recently received my KS and gave it a spin, Anor Londo-style, with a single character against Gargoyle and Ornstein and Smough, only to total them.

Funny thing is I thought I had lost but roaming through the forums, it would appear I made this more difficult to myself by giving Smough more HP than he should have, and have in fact won.

Nice chest ahead, understand who can!

Now to play solo with two characters and make this much harder on myself

In this installment the Village SoloPlay variant is nearing completion.

This one has been cooking for a while and sat behind last month's behemoth, Dominant Species.

This variant has a puzzly feel as most of the elements in the game are open knowledge. This posed some issues with replayability initially. To overcome this I added a little bit of "deck building" and play sequence planning. There is someone out there who has a tendency to "break" my designs that head into this territory. You certainly can study it long and hard and play more optimal but I have yet to figure out a way to "break it".

What this has done is make the game quite a bit more challenging than the normal casual feel of the multi-player game. The way that the cubes are dispersed on the board will/should change the way that you approach each round if you want to do well.

When I started playing this variant, I would knock a game out in 30-45 minutes. Now, I really want to do well and am spending more than an hour trying to make sure that I have accounted for everything.

Everything has a use in this variant and I am including a player aide.

I should be done with the playtesting and rules fine tuning by next week. Base game with BGG promo market tiles only. I do not own nor plan on picking up any of the expansions.

Decided to finally start playing this. Picked 3 characters and tried to save the world.

No spoilers, but it was quite interesting having things change on the fly as the game went on. I managed to win, although I'm not so sure I'll use the same 3 next time.

Basically Pandemic is excellent, and adding the legacy aspects seems to make it even more so. Looking forward to more.

I've been slowly developing a solo variant of the theme park building game Unfair. The game has a lot of interaction and I'm trying to keep some of that without making the dummy player too cumbersome to manage. I also want there to be a possible loss to the dummy if you don't attack him or build a good enough engine. I think I'm pretty close to a first version, which I'll post in the Unfair forum shortly.

Also, this week I played Donny Behne's solo variant of Great Western Trail. This game has been hard to get to the table because my wife doesn't like the long play time and complexity. Donny's solo variant is really interesting and fun, and worth trying out.

My first entry ever....
I had my eye on this game for a long time and finally Marty's judgement conviced me to get it.

I will play a full 5-player multi-solitaire, my preferred way of gaming.
Will post a picture too!

See you soon

EDIT June 5:

Played the 5-player yesterday evening for the first time, I love this game!

So since Marty wanted to be the yellow player, I thouhgt that I might as well have more geeks playing with me (ahem - I'm pink btw), so I also included Koinskyz as blue, marble911 as green and Ibbo as purple.

I also had a different strategy for each player:
Marty - should go for contracts,
marble911 - wanted to emphasize on stations,
Ibbo - I sent to lay tracks,
Koinskyz and maho were told to do just anything as the game progressed.

Endgame board:

Scores:

I think the results speak for themselves

Very fun, will play this again very soon, next time with:
gentle,
Zakoholic,
Gribbon,
benjamininja and of course me.

The Germans were able to wipe three Soviet armies off the map thanks to a decisive breakout by 4th Panzer army over the Donets. The Soviets were able to reform their lines barely by bringing 1st Tank Army out of Stalingrad and redeploying it on the Don, but there are three armies in the Donets bend that are ripe for encirclement and destruction.

Act Three! Everybody Dies!

Set up at work behind me. Played for about 45 minutes during lunch and was able to complete 2 days. Turn length is determined by how many times you have to interact with the Book of Scripts, each time adding to the time sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.

I'm kind of playing drunken monkey style because I don't know exactly how everything works because it's intended to be played that way, and I'm okay with that. Boris, Anton and Bruno-a Warehouse worker, Mathematician and TV Chef, respectively- are doing their best to survive the civil war that everyone thought would only last a few weeks. It's now been a year later and food, water and all other things that make life "normal" are missing.

On day one I cleared some bits out of the house and built a new bed because if I know people (and I don't), is that a good night's sleep is necessary. Boris and Anton then went to Boris' old warehouse to scrounge for parts. Unfortunately the warehouse caught fire and they were forced to flee the burning building, lungs full of smoke and arms full of shattered glass. They were able to get some electrical equipment and a hatchet, and some bandages that were immediately used to stop some of the bleeding gained in their escape.

Unfortunately the government must have assumed that my crew were rebels who intentionally set fire to that warehouse, because my own home was shelled that night after a group of starving civilians raided our stores. Bruno managed to keep himself safe by hiding in the various hidey holes of the house, but our brand new bed was destroyed.

The next day say more cleaning of the house, but the cold evening saw that rather than building a bed that none of us would sleep in, we decided to build a small heater, we prayed this wouldn't blow up in our faces. We only sent Boris out scavenging tonight, with Bruno again watching the door while Anton slept on the floor.

Boris found a quiet house and found a few things, but finally found a pantry chock full of much needed food. Poor Anton's belly was keeping everyone awake. When leaving, Boris looked inside a room to see a child playing. Apparently there was a family living in this house, he had no idea he was stealing from actual living people. He left some food, but took the rest for himself. We all need to live in these times, right?

Some armed thugs tried to break down the door to our home that night, but Bruno had a hatchet, and after seeing the damage he could do with it, the Thugs left to look for easier prey.

Now that the pantry is full, the new Dawn is looking better, but the wounds gained from the shelling and the fire from previous days aren't healing well, and some medicine will have to be found. Also, the chapter objective involves removing a gun from our stocks. Tall order in two more days.

Edit

And just like that, game over.

I wasn't able to do much during the day as the wounds everyone had limited their production capabilities. I made a workbench so I could make more lockpicks and things. I also had our chef whip up more veggies, while Anton risked going to the front door. Luckily he found someone to trade with and we were able to unload all of our electrical equipment we've stolen in order to get some food and cigarettes for Bruno.

Then we sent Boris to sleep on the floor since he was barely standing while Bruno stood watch at the door again. Anton went to the Military Base which was a big risk, but it was the closest location and also had the possibility to acquire a handgun which I would need in the next two days or I'd be beaten by the same army members.

Anton was noticed for making too much noise (rolled a '2') and the members of the army promptly beat him up. Sadly with all the other wounds he had received, he was never able to make it back to the shelter. Anton died bruised and beaten on the streets, another anonymous shape amidst the rubble.

Bruno at the door didn't have any problems over the night, but the hunger in his belly was grating at him. When the sun rose, he took a risk and left the safety of the shelter, looking for his other friend, hoping a few chefs could make their food rations last longer. However a sniper's eye was sharp in the morning light, dousing Bruno's light before our former celebrity even knew it.

Boris was left alone in the shelter. Everyone had left, and none had left. Not only had his friends left, but so had his girlfriend and daughter. The loneliness and sadness became too much. At least his death was his own choice, and not the choice of some other faceless thug.

---------------------

Well, that (de)escalated quickly. Clearly I learned quite a few things during this playthrough that I'll pay more attention to. Like, I'll leave more parts and recover more water when searching, I'll build more stuff and clear less things until I need to. The visitor space is more useful than I think.

But what a way to lose yourself for a few hours.

Still one of my favourite games ever! It's just so great to see your town center grow and develop. With the big wooden cubes, its just a joy to build and play with the cubes if you get bored or while thinking about where to put your next piece... whistle

I didn't take a picture, but I was actually playing outside, but only on my balcony, lying on my camping... lounge? Not sure whats the correct word. Since I couldn't see the garden and my balcony is not much to look at, I didn't take a picture today.

Still, the game works great, the cubes are big enough that they won't topple too easily and it doesn't take up a lot of space either.

I still have to find a great strategy that works for me, I scored pretty mediocre (read: badly) with only 58 points. In theory, I always know what I want and need to do but somehow I end up with a completely different city. Every time.

Oh well, but it was great playing it again, I should keep it handy somewhere and take it outside more often.

Just finished playing a quick demolishing mission on three drug huts.
I must say, this was a very clean and fast operation. My operatives suffered a grant total of just 1 wound during the whole action and it was a resounding success.

Maybe it was because I sent in my newly acquired British Special Ops, or just because I was lucky, but this was by far the easiest game of this I played.

Had a lot of fun and will play more missions soon!

thumbsup I really love how this always tells a story, I can really visualize well how the soldiers are moving through for instance the village , into a river to the wetlands and encountering some loitering enemies and scouts along the way to the final objective.
thumbsup Some people dislike them I've heard, but I really like using the bullet dice.
thumbsdown Expansions are hard to get in my country.

Going to give this one an attempt this weekend, probably from my dining table and looking outside through the open window.

EDIT: Had my first play, and quite enjoyed it. Looking forward to trying again. However my enjoyment was reduced by the terrible rulebook, map, and player-aids. Finding tracks, tables, and rules is made difficult by a lack of references and cross-references. Sometimes acronyms are used, and sometimes the full text. Whilst looking up a rule a found the tale of guy who played it on his boat while stuck in harbour, sounds like the ideal situation to get it played.

I don't know if I'll count this as a play, but it definitely was on my table.

It was all about Venus.

I did my planning.

And then, after 12 years, tried to launch all the rockets.
Ouch.

Pure beauty.

Great gift from my great Secret One, but next time I'll play on normal difficulty rather than hard.

First day of June and the year is already half over. Really like the puzzle/engine building aspect of this game. Squeaked a win with Phob Lob Corporation. The +1 extra Me value certainly help attain some necessary cards.

I can see why this game is getting it's buzz.

Since my game ended at 12:20am, I'll go ahead and count it for June.

I played a quick game of Orleans, using "The Dignitary" solo scenario. It had been a long time since I'd played Orleans and the urge struck me to finally get some games in using the Invasion expansion the evening before I played this session.

After absolutely demolishing The Dignitary the night before, I decided to have another go at it. This time around it was much tighter as I wasn't moving across the map as quickly as I had in the previous game. I just wasn't getting the bag draws and was doing a poor job of getting the right people in my bag.

Although it was a tense finish, I ended the last turn getting EXACTLY what I needed from the bag and was able to pick up my 7th and 8th citizens. One from the map and the other from the Beneficial Deeds board.

Yay!

Sorry, it's a yucky day outside- but I'm going to a ball game here in a bit..

I'm being held hostage.

The company that is supposed to be out to repair the washing machine (again!) stiff us today. Said they called and called. Nope. Phone didn't ring when they said they called. I'll admit, there is the slight chance there was a glitch with the phone (we have it through our cable company- another hostage situation!) but not like they said. So we sat here all day. And now we're scheduled for next Tuesday.

At least I have games to work on for the Solo PnP contest and games to play. And starting tomorrow, two more classes to start teaching.

Okay, back to the game.

I got an e-mail today asking me to verify my address for the Crime Wave pledge. So yeah, given my hostage situation, why not play???? And, while I'm at it, why not just see if those dice are loaded...????

Here's the competition:

A set of aluminum dice given to me by my daughter for Father's Day last year. And you know the red ones...

Played against Arkayne. Found some help files talking about how to win at this game. So I followed along, knowing it would all depend on the dice rolls...

First roll. Yep, those red dice. Couldn't have even bought my way to a good result with those rolls. And look at the competition. Yep, this game should be easy with those rolls.

And the game continued. Played the cards in the order suggested, and sure enough, drove the threat all the way down to "S." I flip a terror card. Hostage killed. Hmm... That doesn't quite make sense. Maybe the gun went off accidentally....

Got a few more freed. Then this:

Revenge of the red dice! Curses?!?!?

Oh, well. In the end, I lost another hostage, but managed to get the others released. Then got Arkayne. Sticking to the suggestions I found (here: My recipe for success (75% win ratio)) I'll chalk it up as a win. I didn't buy or use cards I would have thought to use. I kept to the order given- which means there really *IS* a strategy to the dice rolling.

Now if Crime Wave will just get here.

And since you're wondering- yes, when I look back at the rolls, it was just about even in number of 5 and 6 between the two sets of dice. So loaded or not, they did end up rolling just about as well as the aluminum dice.

<summary>Can't wait for the Crime Wave...</summary>

Finally beat the AI! Woohoo!

I wonder what rules I broke along the way... whistle

For people who want this game to feel like a "deckbuilder," the expansion isn't going to do much for you. The pickup and deliver mechanism is really interesting, but it really can make going after new cards even LESS important in some ways. You are actively encouraged to pick up powerful cards and then eventually cull them from your deck, though, which I think is a delightful little twist with the expansion. But you can start getting such a cash infusion with some of the new cards that you're just buying things for points (or hate-buying against the AI) rather than purposefully crafting a thoughtful deck.

With that said, that whole element of the gameplay doesn't bother me at all. Very, very interesting game. I hope it gets some love from the community here when the Kickstarter drops in a couple weeks!
