Hello again!

It's June (already!) and the pickings are rich for the topical wargamer with some significant battles and campaigns taking place in June over the years. Classic wargame topics Waterloo, Normandy and Midway are bound to show up but who will be playing games about Naseby, Saipan or Monmouth? The Seven Days Battles or The Six Days War? Who doesn't care and will just play whatever they like?

I suppose the only way to find out is to ask the eternal question: What wargames are on your table this month?

I have a Vassal game of the 1862 scenario going with regular Vassal man Rex, in which I am the rebels and we're just starting the spring turn. Not too much has happened yet. The dice differential has been 1 for all but one action phase so far, which has limited the amount of action taking place.

The most exciting move so far has been Rex taking the initiative in the east and getting Banks to boot Jackson out of the valley. Jackson has regrouped in Staunton and has been told to wake up for round 2. Elsewhere, Grant and Buell are making progress out west but there haven't been enough actions available for the Union to really get going.

Although I'm benefitting from the low dice differentials I would like the game to open up a bit.

Finished the game from last month against new player Keith. My French won but it might have been different. Now we have reset and swapped sides.

I'm feeling fairly good about my chances. Progress to Ohio Forks has been steady. The Hudson Valley is full of both French and British, so a big grinding push might be on the cards. There's an invasion force eyeing up Louisbourg and finally, Johnson has his Indians and fancies a stab at Niagra. It's getting on to winter so who knows what spring will bring.

Edwin & I are about halfway through, I reckon. Big cavalier stacks have been pushing towards London and the cordon is starting to look a little thin. The Solemn League has just arrived at the border so I'm hoping they can take the pressure off the south east. Maybe even turn the tide...

Planning on trying to play both sides of this until i get the rules down to play with a friend. He loves to play, but doesn't really care for the learning process without someone teaching him.

That has kept me from learning any of the wargames i have. I just need to knuckle down and try playing both sides. I haven't done that yet so hopefully it works.

We relearned the game last week with a smaller scenario. Now its time to play a big 12 board map. Thankfully their are several fan made scenarios on BGG that work with just the base game. The ones out of the book seem a little wonky when it comes to balance.

Finished the Barbarossa Campaign with a narrow German victory. At one point I rolled 5 6 in a row on German attacks which devastated the Red Army.

Right now I am almost at the end of Case Blue which is on a knifes edge as the Germans have pushed toward Stalingrad but the Soviets are massing troops around Moscow preparing an offensive to threaten Smolensk.

After Blue, I'm going to try an early Zitadelle. I had emailed the designer asking what adjustments to make to the OB so I could try the original intent of the Germans which was to launch Zitadelle by May 1943 at the absolute latest. He sent me the information so I am eager to give it a go. I am tempted to play all the scenarios in the game (I'm on an East Front "kick" again ) but we'll see.

This really is a great game with lots of options and even though cards are involved and you can plan ahead a bit when playing alone, but I figure both sides had spies so having a bit of intel is okay in the end

Paris and Moscow were within my grasp due to a huge air force in Berlin upgraded to Heavy Bomber (with the 3 range they were supporting both fronts). However, despite punching through the Red Curtain via the Ukraine and finding very little depth of defense, my eastward push stalled and the Americans soon entered the war thereafter.

Great game, and I can't wait to get it back to the table. I went with a fairly historical plan of attack as the Axis (although there was very little fighting in Africa), but there are certainly many ways to approach it.

Did one solo play to get ready for a FTF scenario this weekend. The GTS series probably isn't for everyone and definitely not the cheapest game around, but you get a ton of stuff in the box! Beautiful maps, counters, rules, etc., plus there's quite a few smaller scenarios as well as the entire campaign.

Onto game 17 with my regular opponent, and while Afghanistan was rebuilt after regime change, we succeeded in bringing down the government in Central Asia and establishing an Islamic Republic. Soloing the early scenarios as training for some of the longer ones. I'm highly impressed with the Phormio system, which seems a good bit simpler to use than the bot system in the COIN games.

The Battalion Combat Series (BCS) started with a bang in the Ardennes (with Last Blitzkrieg). Lots of units. Close terrain. Bad weather.

In Baptism by Fire it moves to the much more open terrain of southern Tunisia: fewer units in wide open spaces. But still a fair bit of bad weather.

The system shines in both.

I am most of the way through my first (solo) game of BbF. BCS works very well solo.

Astonishing map: very accurate in any historical details and the graphics and color make it the best looking map I have every seen. The Gameplay is very similar to his sister game Moscow’41, but with some new interesting addition specific for this campaign, such as the naval movement, Finnish army with his special abilities, soviet baltic fleet (I had the pleasure to sink the Marat) and the unexpected withdrawal of panzer troops for operation typhoon, which make this game a unique experience in War War 2 panorama. There is not only the campaign but also some challenging short scenario, in which each player has to deal with its own set of challenge.
More details in my After Action Report.

Today I finished another game of D-Day at Omaha Beach. With another loss. With 10 VPs I was far away from even winning just First Waves and I was even one point short if I had wanted to continue into the extended game.

I was doing a lot better than in my previous game. And a little less bad luck with the German reinforcements could have swung the game around. (Maybe...) But they kept popping up in places where they had fields of fire on the draws or the WNs I had just cleared and ended up costing me a lot of points.

Last week I have explained Paths of Glory to a friend. Now we have started to play and have finished the first turn.

I haven't played it in a while and was really looking forward to it.

The CP (me) have opened with Guns of August. They had pushed into Sedan but have now been pushed back out by a determined French/British counter-offensive.

In the Balkans, Belgrade has fallen to the 6th AH-Army

In the East Germany has been poking the Russians a bit. But the East hasn't seen much real action so far.

Edit: Picture updated. Now Paths of Glory is no longer taking place on a beach in France.

Update:

We continued our game this evening. With no real pressure building up in the East my German armies have started to go on a rampage in the West. Since neither one of us was willing to play the Entrench Event so far, there's quite a lot happening on the Western Front. German Armies have marched into Brussels, Belfort and Nancy (which they are currently still besieging). Overall the French forces have been beaten up pretty badly.

In the Balkans the Austrians are slowly pushing the second Serbian 2nd Army down south. In Galicia they have been able to hold their ground so far.

Russia is still far from becoming a real menace to the CP.

Things are looking pretty dire for the Allies...

PS: When I look at the board state I feel like I am (despite my best efforts) a very lousy teacher for this game.

Update:

We continued and play another turn today. There's a bit of a build up of Russian armies (finally) but in the West both Verdun and Nancy have fallen and Antwerp is probably going to follow suit soon. Things are looking rather grim for the French...

I'm not sure what to think of this one yet. It's so small & short I'll definitely play it a few more times. This is a 9-card solo, PNP, microgame about the famous battle of Agincourt. It's free here on BGG, designed by Chris Hansen. Besides the cards, you only need a handful of cubes and some dice. The rules are surprisingly wordy for such a small game, but not difficult. In what feels like a twist, the solo side you play here is the French. The objective is to break the English line within three turns (each of which normally has three plays of cards).

It's definitely clever, though at its core the tactical situation at Agincourt isn't the most interesting. Still, as with One Minute Waterloo or Bulge I'm intrigued at the choices a designer of such a small game has to make.

Still soloing Scenario 5 - The Battle That Never Happened. This covers the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg.

In this game Meade has aggressively followed up after the battle and has trapped two of Ewell's divisions east of South Mountain. The third (Early) has struggled further south but is still the wrong side of the mountains.

Last turn Lee redirected two of Hill's divisions back to help Ewell escape. This was a big mistake as these two divisions (Heth and Pender) are also now trapped. Only Anderson, of Ewell and Hill's six divisions has made it across the mountains and is now marching towards Hagerstown.

Further south Longstreet's Corps is doing it's best to reach the Potomac although it too is still to the east of South Mountain.

Today I played about half of turn 4 (out of 6) and things are not looking good for Lee's army. They have 9 VPs from casualties and 6 for occupying the Naval Battery (by 500 of Robertson's cavalry) but they need at least 30 to avoid a Union victory of some sort.

Here is the situation in turn 4
