The idea behind these lists is to post what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

While there are several regular posters to this geeklist series, anyone is welcome to join in and post and discuss your games!

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing May 2017!

We've been playing through all the D-Day Dice missions. Today we completed the two KS bonus missions (N19-N20)!

Entertaining co-op die rolling game. We've really been feeling like we're doing something wrong, as the game has generally been very easy. Usually we have some tough times early, but once we get rolling toward the end we just feel unstoppable - mission N19 we each ended with over 80 soldiers each!

Really enjoying this - need to play more! This was an odd game in that no one could complete a set. And the value of toads skyrocketed; we just kept having a bunch of toad cards! This did, in fact, lead to the player that started with two toads winning the game.

I just finished a play of this on Yucata.de, if my flailing about can actually be described as "Playing". I'm not sure why I had such a hard time keeping the meaning of the iconography straight, especially as I was playing with a copy of the rules open in another window! blush

It was a lot of fun playing with Stormknight, Lisa, and Marble911, though! What's next?

We're into the first expansion pack for D-Day Dice, which we still had shrinkwrapped. Yay for playing something unplayed!

This scenario included a new vehicle, the Scout Car, which was amazingly powerful. While you've got it, when players use an item it goes back to the 'available' pile. This made it incredibly easy to keep cycling the Bangalore Torpedo (reduces a sector's defense to 0) and grenades (blocks machine gun fire) and not lose any troops!

Smashing some buildings! Drakonis (controlled by me) held Manhattan for a while and was up to 16 points. I just needed four to win, was in an area with a tank (4 points) and had abilities that meant I got an extra destruction result and needed 1 less destruction result - so all I needed was two smashes to destroy the tank and win. And...I couldn't get them! Got to 18 points. Then Mantis unleashed a lot of damage from Manhattan and killed me and the other surviving monster.

Wednesday, I got a GIGANTIC box full of Cthulhu Wars Onslaught two. This thing was huge!

I finally got all the stuff sorted and condensed into some smaller boxes. We played our first game using the new content, playing on the Library of Celaeno map. Pretty strange - its got spell books you can take control of, a gigantic librarian that you can use to attack players who have overview books, and a custodian that "sweeps up" the library by pushing units into the Oubliette.

Fun game. The Tcho Tcho's absolutely ruled the game, getting a ton of points via Elder Signs and winning on the same turn Sleeper managed to summon its GOO.

Really hoping to get to play more with the expansion stuff!

A solo game of the introductory scenario with Brahma and Adelheim taking on the Rageborn. This being my first play, I played defensively; perhaps too much so, as the game ran longer than I think a normal game would. It worked in the end, though, as I managed to defeat the Nameless by running out his deck! In retrospect, those two and this set up in particular might be suited to that approach, with Brahma's healing, Adelheim's ability to cancel enemy cards, and the presence of focusing orbs and mage's talismans in the market. At the end, the Rageborn still had 25 HP and Gravehold had 15. I really enjoyed this, and am looking forward to playing more of it in the future!

I have the 1st edition Kickstarter version of Deep Space D-6, which is a solitaire-only game. Some of the cards needed to be clarified, but otherwise, the game is pretty easy to learn and play.

(I have backed the mini-expansion with the upgraded Ouroboros final encounter replacement cards, but won't receive it until at least the end of the year.)

June 4, 2017
d10-1 I played for the first time using the Halcyon ship. I used the basic rules (not removing any cards from the base deck, but also not playing with the Final Encounter Ouroboros cards).

Won. Minimal damage to my ship although it needed repairs and some crew had occupied the infirmary at various times.

June 5, 2017
I played a few more games of Deep Space D-6, trying out the different ships.

BTW, if anyone is interested, there is a Kickstarter campaign going on right now for the reprint (and the expansion).

During out banquet at the medieval market in Copenhagen, a couple of my near, medieval friends and I played this game, Meier, which is often played at pubs here. We played with a few twists to the rules:

1) When you loose a round, you drink.

2) Each player had a d6, which is counted down as they loose a round. When at zero, they remove a piece of garment that the winner receive (possibly because William was freezing he added this rule). Everyone reset their counter

3) When rolling 32, the dice are shown, and everyone drinks. The round is over - with no losers, and the roller, rolls again on a new round.

We started with Clank! I got a valuable treasure and ran for it, but had a lot of wounds and got KO'd a few steps from the entrance.

Finished up the game day with Cthulhu Wars. I couldn't bring everything, but I had brought the extra maps, and we wound up with four players with at least some experience, so we tried the Primeval map.

This board has glaciers that appear and block gates. I wound up not being all that crazy about it; it seemed like points and power were in very short supply, and it just felt like we were fighting over scraps.

I played the Tcho Tchos, and got an early lead by performing a ritual and sacrificing all three of my High Priests to gain three elder signs. This scared everyone, and Windwalker and Opener of the Way both promptly decided to come stomp the heck out of me before I could do that again; I tried valiantly and did some damage, but got pretty much smashed out of the game!

The game wound up with a tie between those two factions. Poor Sleeper got hurt a lot early and never caught up. Still a fun game, but I'm not sure I'm too keen on playing on the Primeval board again. Maybe try cutting it back to one glacier per turn instead of two.

Near and Far arrived from KS! Played our first game of it tonight, playing the introductory scenario. You travel around having adventures, recruiting people to help you, and building camps to gather gold and gems and stuff. We enjoyed this, thought it ran a bit long - hopefully it will speed up with more plays!

Lisa absolutely ruled this, getting out all of her tents and 7 artifacts.

Love this game, but I clearly need to learn better strategies to keep up with the experts!

I've been reading the Amelia Peabody series of historical mystery novels by Elizabeth Peters (the protagonist is an Egyptologist) recently as well as looked at some Egyptian exhibits in museums in Copenhagen, which put me in the mood for this small-box deckbuilder, thematically.

I played one solo game yesterday morning. Not sure yet how I feel about it. There are a lot of cards whose actions can't be used in the solo game because they reference other players. You can still use them as money to buy other cards, and to entomb them. Nevertheless, it was a bit disappointing when a new card came out and I read the text to see what it did, I found out it didn't do anything in the solo game, action-wise. On the other hand, the solo game seemed a little easy (at least the starter solitaire - I can imagine the master solitaire without one free entombment per turn being much harder), so maybe it's a good thing not to have those actions.

I'll have to play this one more, and maybe try some of the variants.

I took this one to my parents' place, planning to play a solo game in the garden, as the theme of this month's "Solitaire Games on Your Table" geeklist is playing outdoors. It's just a scoresheet, a pen and 5 dice, so I thought it would be a good choice for something that the wind can't blow away.
Mum didn't hear the part where I announced I was going to play a solo game and came to join me, so I decided I hadn't heard that part either and was glad I'd brought a game that plays multiplayer as well.

We played four games - two basic ones, and two with the "advanced" version in which each location has a different special rule, like some symbols not counting, or counting twice etc.

After four journeys to Mordor, and a little breathless from trying to outrun the Nazgûl, Mum suggested we play this one. I left it at my parents' place a few months ago, and apparently it has been put to good use.
It's a game that Dad will also play (I think mostly because he seems to have insane luck with it! ), and Mum has also played it with her parents.

We played three rounds on the "advanced" side of the board - the one that has crossed-out spaces on which you can't stop.

d10-1 Base game + Unseen Forces expansion
Azathoth versus 4 characters (played solo):
Michael McGlen
Darrell Simmons
Wilson Richards (UF)
Sister Mary

Despite having 2 of my characters cursed at the end, and occasionally failing an adventure, I won fairly easily (although I nearly lost Sister Mary once).

Won with all characters surviving.
Doom Track = 3/12

June 15, 2017
d10-2 Base game + Unseen Forces expansion
Glaaki vs 4 characters:
Jenny Barnes
Joe Diamond
Kate Winthrop
Gloria Goldberg

The Chapel and the Lost & Found (2 of the Entrance cards from the Unseen Forces expansion) got permanently closed about halfway through the game, but I did all right, anyway. Kate Winthrop completed the seal -- to stop Glaaki from entering our realm -- by obtaining the last needed Elder Sign (plus an extra one!) in the Public Lavatory location.

Won with all characters surviving.
Doom Track = 2/10

d10-3 (I have this game set up, but haven't played it yet)

Base game + Unseen Forces expansion + Gates of Arkham expansion (using the Gates of Arkham specific Mythos, Skills, Event, and Adventure decks)
Azathoth vs 4 characters:
Jenny Barnes
Joe Diamond
Kate Winthrop
Gloria Goldberg
(These are my favorite characters from the base game, although sometimes I will switch in Sister Mary instead of Gloria Goldberg, or Darrell Simmons for Joe Diamond. I figured I'd better stick to the familiar until I get used to the new rules and decks for Gates of Arkham.)

We concluded our campaign of homebrew Epic 40K!

I've been doing a session report for the campaign here: Fighting back the Flames of Chaos and the Devourer - an Epic Campaign (in progress). Here are the details for the final game:

Massive Battle

The defending forces had bought time during the battles to locate the key tyranid hive clusters, and launched a full scale assault to destroy them and break the attack!

Made some adjustments to things before this battle. The sides were only 1 conquest point apart going into the battle. We've been randomly rolling for the point value of the games, and this roll gave us the maximum. Every side had a titan on the field with ample support.

This was a 'breakthrough' scenario; all of the objectives started on one side (in this case, the Chaos/Nids side), but are worth more to the other side.

The Invaders advanced very quickly and had enough troops to make a solid wall, and blew apart the leading Shining Spear force before it could get an attack in. However, the big genestealer horde was tied down by a marine detachments that sacrificed themselves buying time for the titans and Eldar V-Cannon batteries to get in position.

The Imperial Warlord Sunsword confronted the Chaos Lord of Battles and weathered heavy fire from the Chaos Titan and supporting Noise Marines with only moderate damage and emerged victorious.

As holes appeared in the Invader lines Vypers and Marine Bikes rushed through to grab the poorly defended objectives, causing the Invaders to divide up their attention. As the Tyranid bio-titan turned to fight the fast moving attackers, the Vypers and bikes concentrated their attacks on it, providing crossfire opportunities for a devastator detachment and Volcano Cannon fire from the Sunsword, killing the monstrosity before it could regenerate.

While the invaders did a lot of damage, losing both of their titans and losing control of the objectives quickly slid the battle to the defenders side, and the game ended with a resounding Marine/Eldar victory.

Given the size of this battle and that we're doing some revamping of the campaign rules, this battle concluded the campaign! The hunger of the invaders has been thwarted - for now![/q]

Another recent KS arrival. Took us a bit to get to the table as the rules were a real slog to get through.

We've played twice, and I don't know that it will be getting much more play anytime soon. Its got some interesting stuff, but the rules are a mess and a lot of parts of the game can be annoyingly frustrating. And its long - over two hours for two players. For that kind of time, we could be looking at playing something like the Mage Knight Board Game.

We won both games, but we got several rules wrong, and pretty quickly made a houserule to not spend quite as many turns just skipping turns to heal!

Tuesday was my monthly game night; and I got my Vikings on Board on the table for the first time - and this is a great game! A game that is easy to learn, easy to teach, and easy to play - while still being strategic.

And something strange happened! I won a game?! I usually don't win. Well, I won the tiebreaker; the other player with 10 points had a less goods (two for three points), but got his points mainly on bets; one of his bets was a bet that I would win on the last ship - so I had an idea that he might not screw up my chances of wining that boat - and when he was even the first player, he could close the boat and ship it off - making me the winner of the boat at his whim; and thereby make him the winner of the bet.
As it was the last boat (7th of 8) the game ended with this last departure, and scoring started. One player I don't remember the score of, but one of them got seven points.

My thoughts about this game is that it works really good as a 3-4 player game, but there are some rule twists in a two player game, that I am not so sure of how good they actually are...

Wanted a light game to play, and since we'd recently seen Wonder Woman I suggested we pull out the DC Deckbuilder, which we haven't played in quite a while. Our recently having watched the Arrowverse, Supergirl and Wonder Woman meant we recognized a lot more of the characters, which was cool! We both agreed the game was fun and we should play it more.

We had a 2 vs. 2 game of Black Canary and Green Lantern vs. Robin and Nightwing (completely at random). The Robin team got totally clobbered - Canary alone nearly beat their combined score!

The two Robins actually made a poor team; since they both want Equipment cards, they couldn't help each other much.

I still feel like the characters are not very well balanced. For example, Green Lantern gets +3 power if he plays at least three cards with different names in one turn. There's another hero that gets +2 for playing at least three different types of cards in a turn. Not only is three types harder than 3 names, but the bonus is lower! I feel like the Crisis characters are perhaps particularly weak.

Jude, you play this a lot. Thoughts from you about that?

Lisa and I have been doing a few demos for a local store. They asked us if we would demo some Iello games; Big Book of Madness and Sea of Clouds. We didn't know Sea of Clouds, but they loaned us their demo copy for a few days to try it out, so we played two games today. Nice light fun little game of drafting cards (that you can only see the backs showing their type) when you draft them. Quick and amusing, not very deep.

We enjoyed this enough that we may buy a copy. The one thing we didn't really like was the parrot; there's a parrot that acts as a tiebreaker for whoever has it, but there are only maybe two cards to switch who has the parrot, and they may never even come up!
