Tasks and Challenges

This year is my first time attending a board game convention as a customer and not in a working capacity as a rules teacher / library provider. I am really excited to be attending the UK Games Expo and look forward to picking up some new hot of the press games. I would love it if you could all share with me your convention experiences, good or bad and let us know which conventions if any you will be attending this year.

We really like this little dice selection game, which works great for 2, and has many ways to focus for points. It apparently has no resemblance to its big brother game, which we've not played. I won by a few points, with the completion of a lowly donkey cart. "Heee-aaawwwww!"

My wife nearly always wins, but not this time. We think the 2 player variant works well, with "Dirk", the dummy who still takes some tiles as a 3rd player, and keeps it interesting.

This might have been my fastest win ever, with 3 adjacent flags claimed almost before we got comfortable. Straight flushes fell in my lap as easily as food when I eat, according to my wife.

We felt like something easy and fun tonight so set up Istanbul. We like the theme and mechanic, and the components are really neat.

We used the grouped setup for the first time (ie large numbers in order), which seemed to make things quite easy. You could max out all your goods easily on the top row, then trade them in at the markets, then head down to buy rubies. The wainwright was a bit out of the way, so I neglected it until too late. Nick used it very effectively to collect its ruby and then got enough goods to get the two mosque rubies, whereas I went for loads of cash from the market.

I had four rubies when Nick reached six for the game.

I think this game is better with 3 or 4 players, but still enjoy it with 2.

Lovely distraction towards the end of a busy week.

I have no desire to become a farmer. But a vibrant board, clever card play, dice drafting, and area control mini game made La Granja one of my favourite games at the moment.

After her lost two weeks ago, my girlfriend suggested La Granja and I happily accepted. During setup, I casually read the card list included in the box and suddenly noticed that we have got one important rule wrong: the "Helpers" marked with "1x" means at most once per ROUND, not once per GAME surprise

I figured this may be the reason why I found those cards less powerful, they were underutilised! While I think the rulebook may need to include a section for easy to miss rules and exceptions, I really appreciate that the game comes with a very handy thick player aid for each player, detailing the round structure and different scoring mechanism thumbsup

Anyway, with the correct rule, this time I used Helpers more, and my score seemed to be higher than before as well. After completing one of the craft buildings that gives me bonus points for completing market barrows, I kept fulfilling my market barrows as much as I could and lead all the way to the end of the game.

As said above, I love that cards have multi-uses similar to Glory to Rome, while dice drafting from a common pool and area control in the market place introduce some player interaction. And with many things you may do, AP-prone players should prepare to be complained by their partners. Don't ask me why I know ninja

All in all, a fascinating game that I think deserves being in BGG top 100.

Other than La Granja, we also played 51st State: Master Set. As said in previous Geeklist, I love the combos created by the cards. And yes, you may notice that I really like card games.

We use one of the included expansions. Actually, I haven't played the base game enough to recognise which are from the expansion without looking at the small text on the side. Anyway, the cards provide more ways of resources generation and points gathering. I built an engine around generating and consuming gasoline in the middle of the game. It went quite well that both my girlfriend and I thought I could come back and surpass her. But in the end, she played all of her cards from hand and gained a handsome amount of points, winning the game in confusion.

The more I play it, the more it seems that 51st State is mostly multiplayer solitaire, where each player tries to build their own engine and get it running. I'm not sure if that's because we rarely raze each other to stop his/her engine. Maybe I should play more to understand what it truly offers, as this game hyped me up when I picked it.

I tried a new strategy. I took only short routes and built them. By the end I had cycled through the lot and got a second pick of one I had rejected earlier but which later fitted in nicely. ( Rejected tickets go to the bottom of the draw pile in this version)

As I have said before, a great design marred by poor implementation. After the game we spent 10 minutes looking for a couple of cargo chits that had been dropped. And we dropped a couple during the game as well. Not sure who they belonged to so she took them. Not that they helped.

We are now 21% through our Hardcore TtR 10x10.

I am currently learning how to drive my shiny new 3D printer. The very first design I plan is a new implementation of the chits. But first I need to work out how to build a design. Currently up to taking an existing design and printing it. A slow process. Currently 32 hours in to a print of a 80x80x50 box.

Been playing with the wife and getting used to the differences from the core set.

This has many more oppurtunities to do hings in a "good stuff" capacity but also it feels like thete are more hoops to stem an onslaught. It might be me, but ete feels like less Outposts and most Authority Gain is Ally Ability not happenstance like in the Core set.

I think the 7+ costs are more fair here and are not needed to have a blowout stary. I will be incorporating other sets soon.

We love Patchwork, so when I told my wife this was by the same designer, with a similar tile-laying puzzle element, she was interested. It is a different game, though, and still a very good one. I taught it, and then lost. But it's a relaxing game with a pleasant theme and nice artwork, and it plays perfectly with 2.

I don't know how often I've had this item on these couples lists -- but what can I say? It's by far our most-played game!

I'm now on 114 plays of it (of which ~105 with my partner), and nowhere near tired of the game.
Granted, it also has a lot of expansions and we own nearly all of them, but it is such a gripping game even if you don't expand it very much.

So, yeah: thumbsup

(I am aiming to post another game we play here, too, to be a bit more interesting. Last month we played Pax Porfiriana, which we don't get to do very often, so I wish I had posted about that in last month's list! Maybe we'll play it again this month.)

Just for a break from back to back TtR devil we pulled this out at lunchtime.

We had missed our morning game of memory today as we slept in. Rather than clear to space for it later, Hive was able to snake around the space still left.

Great game. A 2p only perfect information abstract. Not as complex as Chess, but I am beginning to think it may be just as deep. I ignored my usual strategy of immobilising her queen with the beetle as she has got a handle on that one. Instead, I used two grasshoppers to leapfrog over her and pin her down that way. Then it was just avoiding her traps while moving ants and spiders in for the win.

The one downside of the game is it is VERY AP prone. And we both suffer from it. So the nominal 20min game gets blown out somewhat. About 45 min today.

We tried our own variant this time:
Byways of Europe.
We pulled out the Big Cities cards, used the rest then shuffled in the long routes that did not mention one of the big cities. Our initial ticket draw was 5 keep 2, then 4 keep 1 for subsequent draws. It worked quite well. And took us places we don't usually visit as we usually play the Big Cities variant.

As it happened we both drew one long ticket for our initial draw. I later drew another two. It is a shame that the Europa tickets have a different back for the long routes. It makes it harder to disguise that you have kept them. I really do not understand why they did this. Having the faces a different colour is sufficient for sorting them out at the end of the game. And yes. I know I could opaque sleeve them. But I like the artwork on the backs

AP is also a major factor in this game. Made worse by the fact you do not have perfect information. I know I always end up counting cards in my head. It does wonders for my memory.

Hello everybody,

first time poster on this list, but lots of familiar avatars here for me.

We've been playing Star Realms a lot for the last weeks, which has become our go-to game after dinner and a nice way to get a clear head after work.

I taught my wife how to play this one, showed her a few tricks and ideas and now I'm having a hard time winning!

My wife loves it, but here favorite deckbuilder is still Shadowrun: Crossfire, which we played easily over 100 times by now. I'm getting a bit tired of it. whistle

We only have the base game, but we enjoy it a lot! On the app I have almost every expansion, but since I taught this to my wife, I don't feel like playing the app anymore.

Cheers,
Andreas

Edit: corrected, thanks Greg.

Two plays of Onitama last night. Each player has 4 pawns and a Master pawn. The object of the game is to either capture your opponent's Master or get yours into your opponents temple on the opposite side of the board from your starting temple. You have 5 cards [of 16 possible] with different movements on them. Each player starts with two and the fifth goes to the first player after their turn. The card played then shifts into position to go the the second player after their turn.

Never knowing for sure which cards you are going to have access to makes this very interesting. The game is easy to learn and relatively quick to play but can get a bit AP prone.

I lost both games by getting myself trapped on the edge of the board with no where to go. I'm not a big fan of games that require lots of prolonged thinking so i try to figure out a good move in a short amount of time - often with detrimental results.

For us it is fun as long as no one takes it too seriously. It is one of those games that is simple in design but tough to master.

It reminds me of The Duke which uses tiles that show movements and after you use a tile, you flip it over revealing a different type of movement that you can use the next turn. I enjoy both games. Will have to play Onitama more to see if I like it better than the Duke.

At this point, I'd say I like the Duke better as you can go after different objectives and there are more pieces on the board. Although Onitama's simplicity with such interesting play dynamics might just win me over.

After a long game-less phase of being over-busy, we finally made it back to the table last night, trotting out Kingdomino for the first time.

This is a great little game with more depth than its small size and pricetag would have you assume. Also lovely is the art – tiles are unique and detailed, with cute extras like a dragon shadow over a sheep field, and a man chasing chickens in one farm scene, only to be chased by the same chickens in another similar tile.

Easy to learn, easy to explain, and just tricky enough to make you stop and think as you draft tiles, planning what you hope to draft next time and where you're going to put it in a compact 5x5 grid. There's also a 7x7 variant and a few optional ways to add bonus points once you get the hang of it.

Elements of "take that" if you're that kind of gamer, but mostly it behooves you to focus on your own miniature plan.

Footprint is small, especially in the 5x5 version, so it works well on a small space. I suspect you could even manage a game on a pair of airplane trays.

Plays quickly... could be 10–15 minutes if you don't think too hard although we competitive AP gamers might have taken 20 minutes per game. Hehe. We haven't played with more than 2, but it does play 2–4. I imagine the drafting order becomes more important with 3 or 4.

I won't reveal the outcome, but I think I might like this game more than the BF. whistle

This was our first play of an escape room game and it certainly won't be our last!

We found the puzzles were challenging yet doable and we had a great time working together to solve the riddles. Quite an enjoyable evening

We're looking forward to playing the next one in the series.

This was a fast, fun puzzle game that works well with two.

A simple strategic game, loved by many but little understood by my girlfriend and I who have only recently taken up boardgaming. My partner seems to love this game and, even after a few matches, appears to have become very confident of her abilities. In our most recent game, she could barely contain her excitement and kissed me several times as a means of indicating her joyous anticipation of an expected win. However, her imagined victory proved just that as her large endgame bonus, 6 for every building she built, could not quite allow her to surpass my barely sufficient in game advantage. She was magnanimous in defeat and I was charitable in victory. Although I knew I had simply been lucky, I could not help but feel my win was deserved! My competitiveness takes me by surprise but my shallow selfishness does not - my girlfriend very nearly deserves better.

We love this card game. We find it to be reasonably simple, quick, and satisfying.
