A Story of Following Sorastro's Videos

Note: This started out as a thread on the SWIA forums here. Since the post has grown considerably, and SWIA shows no sign of stopping expanding, I decided to make a Geeklist instead.

Hello,

Decades ago, I painted some Ral Parthas figurines and one Blood Bowl orc team, but my mini painting urge has lain dormant ever since. After acquiring the excellent Imperial Assault and all of its expansions, I just had to start painting the minis.

Thankfully, at the time Sorastro started publishing his amazing tutorial video series about how to paint the minis for the exact game (see here). So I started on the journey, together with fellow geek paladin_ct (who already had a large Citadel color collection).

I was quite aware that I would never produce results that are quite as amazing as Sorastro's or other established painters. What I wanted was that the figures look better than unpainted, a goal which I think so far I've attained.

This list also serves as a showcase for my painted figures. I don't want to upload them into the game's gallery, since the paint job is not that good, and there are already 1300+ images in the gallery. I'll update the list with more entries as I advance through the series.

Note: I later started painting figures without Sorastro's guidance. Sometimes the video came later than my painting. These cases are marked with a *.

Next in the queue:
AT-DP
Dewback Rider
Clawdite Shapeshifters

Progress Bar:
Wave 1: ██████████ ██████████ ██████████ ██████████ ██████
Wave 2: ██████████ ████
Wave 3: █████████
Wave 4: ██
Wave 5: ██████████ ██████████ █
Wave 6: ██████████ ████████
Wave 7: ███
Wave 8: ██████████ ██████████ ███
Wave 9: ██████
Wave 10: ██████████ ██████████ █
Wave 11: ██████████ ██████
Note: I have everything once except for the Hired Guns, the ISB Infiltrators, Captain Terro, and the Jawa Scavenger, each of which I have two copies of.

I hope this is of some use or entertainment to you. Big thank you to Sorastro for his videos. I am proud to be a patron! Watch this list for more updates. Comments are welcome!

1. Stormtroopers

Naturally, we started with the Stormtroopers. With only white, grey, and black, they should be relatively easy, right? Wrong. It turns out that shading white with straight black wash requires extensive retouching afterwards. On some Troopers' helmets you have a hard time recognizing the familiar lines. In short, it was a lot of work (9 figures is quite a lot), and the results were somewhat disappointing. Still, better than unpainted.

We also found out that the pose can make a difference. Figures holding a weapon in both hands create a lot of hard to reach places (torso, inside of arms).

In the end we decided against adding any form of weathering. I'm not a big fan of it anyway.

To differentiate the elites and the regular groups, we painted the rim of the bases red, blue, and green. We also added white stripes at four places on the rim to mark the first, second, and third figure of each group.

Tip: When painting the rim a different color than the top of the base, paint the rim first, then the base top. I found it way easier to avoid mistakes that way.

2. Probe Droids

Apart from the fact that I was struggling with one particular droid's frailty (upon receiving the game, one figure was completely broken off the base and had to be re-glued), these were the easiest to paint. And they do look awesome.

I decided to add some distinguishing feature to the elite droid and painted the large eye red. That worked okay, but I was disappointed about the white dot I added in the middle. It looked kinda false and tacked on. Painting the eye with gloss varnish would've been sufficient.

Like a cross-breed of Stormtroopers and Probe Droids. Painting the base colors was easy enough, except for those hard to get places of the tripod. Highlighting the trooper was met with the usual muted enthusiasm. But it worked out more or less okay.

4. Imperial Officers

(new picture, old one is here)

Deviating from Sorastro's order of publishing, we tackled the Imperial Officers next. The Officer figure has no hard to get to places, so getting the base colors on was a lot easier. Working with real color was a welcome change.

I tried to give the Elite Officer a distinctive look by painting him in a gray uniform and black gloves. Unfortunately, I glazed him with the same blue-green mix as the others, and his uniform looked about the same tint as the others. Ah well, no harm done.

Painting the eyes was hard with the brushes I used at the time (more on that later).

It was a real shame that these figures suffered the dreaded "frosted varnish". Probably due to high humidity when spraying, I don't know. We could recover the worst effects with some gloss varnish, which looks a bit out of place. It's a pity you can't buy a villain pack with three officers, so I could try again (I'm not buying another core box).

Much later, I covered them with my brush-on matte varnish, which removed the glossiness, at least.

5. Royal Guards

After the Officers, painting the Royal Guards was comparatively easy. There were no obvious pitfalls and they turned out pretty well.

We primed the Royal Guard Champion along with the guards, but it wasn't until much later that we finally painted him (see below).

Tip: When gloss-varnishing the helmet, avoid glossing the eye slit. It looks weird.

6. Trandoshan Hunters

Skipping Darth Vader and the AT-ST who get little use compared to the regular troops, we went over to the Trandoshans.

We quickly learned to hate the Trandoshans' hunched-over pose. Almost every place was hard to get to: the gun, the legs, the arms, the torso. We decided on two color schemes, one for the elites, one for the regulars. We chose not to follow Sorastro's idea of painting one like Bossk, since, knowing FFG, we figured he'd be published as a named figure anyway (and we were right ).

I also chose to use a different wash for the skin between the two groups.

I'm happy with the skin, but much less so with the clothes.

It was around this time that I was fed up with my ever-splaying low-cost brushes (around 12 € for a six-brush set) and ordered the Rosemarys Sorastro links to. They arrived super-fast in Luxembourg and Rosemary's service is really commendable. Painting with those brushes is much less frustrating, and fine details are no longer out of my reach.

I also switched over to a "wet palette". It makes the paint stay wet for a longer time, and cleaning is super easy.

The Nexu were much more enjoyable to paint. Granted, they too had some hard to get to places, but all in all they were quite manageable. I used a different wash for the elite's stripes and added a reddish tint to its spikes. I'm quite happy how they turned out.

8. Wave 3 Stormtroopers *

By that time, paladin_ct had sent his Wave 1 and 2 heroes, Luke, Han, Chewie, and Vader to a person doing commission paintings. So we continued with figures not yet covered by Sorastro. Since FFG had published Wave 3 by that point, we came back to what we knew and hated: painting Stormtroopers.

With a somewhat diluted black wash the results were a bit better, and I tried to work out the faces to be closer to the original. I gave them the elite rims, so they can be used instead of the original ones.

9. Heavy Stormtroopers and Kayn Somos *

(+ Twin Shadows)

The Heavies and Kayn followed right after the other Stormtroopers. Not much to say here, except Kayn was quite easier due to his open pose.

Instead of rebasing as Sorastro did for his villains and heroes, I stuck with monochrome bases due to the reason Sorastro himself cited in the first video: Imperial Assault is played on a variety of terrains, and having grass or sand or the like on a map taking place inside a starbase is a bit silly. Clear bases could have been an alternative, but instead I decided on the following color scheme: Mechanicus Std. Grey for non-unique villains, Abaddon Black for villains, Zandri Dust for heroes, and Mournfang Brown for allies.

10. Royal Guard Champion *

(new picture, old one is here)

After it sat primed for so long, we finally tackled that fellow. I'd found a picture on the web that was clearly the inspiration for the model (here), so we stuck to that color scheme. The cape is a mix of Caledor Sky and Mephiston Red at its base. For the armor, we mixed some metallic color into the brighter highlights. I'm satisfied with how he turned out.

12. Chewbacca, Gaarkhan, and Wookiee Warriors *

(new picture, old one is here)

(+ Core Game and AP: Wookiee Warriors)

The Wave 3 Wookiee Warriors could easily be done along the Wave 1 Wookiees. While doing Gaarkhan, I learned that trying to drybrush one part after you have already more or less finished a neighboring part is a bad idea. I also found Chewbacca's teeth much harder than his eyes. All in all, the wookiees turned out well.

Note that Tyrant Skull, along with Daemonette Hide and other colors, has moved to "online only" in Citadel's range, so you can only get it by ordering it from their website (or you take a substitute color from a different supplier).

I'd primed those along with the wave 3 Stormtroopers and Heavies, but hadn't gotten around to them. But since we were now in our Hoth campaign, they had to be done.

It turned out as expected. I still hate to paint white figures. I'm starting to think I'd rather have Stormtroopers painted on commission than heroes...

14. Diala Passil

While doing Diala's wraps, I was a bit frustrated that the wash didn't really flow into the gaps between the wraps, so they were hard to make out while painting the skin.

As for the lightsaber, I decided to have it white on both front and back, and I do like it better that way. Some painters make lightsabers a rather striking unicolor blue or red, which I'm not a fan of.

I also made the color glow from the lightsaber on the rest of the mini less intense, or at least, I tried to. I noted that while applying thin glazes, the effect is not immediately visible, so you tend to add more than is necessary. The glaze does become more visible after drying. I also noted that with Fenn's glasses (see below).

Except for the area hidden behind his right arm, (notably the insignia on his chest), Gideon was not very hard to paint. I did have trouble with his mouth, though, and I decided against putting the white dots around the rebel logo on his arm - the logo itself was hard enough to get somewhat right.

Painting nearly black on a black primed mini is not trivial. My Vader doesn't look as nice and striking, but hey, it's better than unpainted grey.

I was a bit apprehensive starting on the Wampas "on my own". Following the method used with the Wookiees, I opted for the following color scheme for the fur: Fenrisian Grey base coat, Russ Grey + Eshin Grey darkening for the areas on the underside of the arms and legs, Fenrisian Grey + White Scar highlighting, White Scar drybrush, and finally some Nuln Oil + Drakenhof Nightshade + Lahmian Medium (2:1:2 ratio). I'm quite pleased with the result. I chose differently colored horns and claws (black is canon) for the regular and elite. Note that the sculpt does not include any visible claws on the hand although Wampas do have hand claws.

Han worked out all right although his shirt has some pretty dark shadows, and his skin looks blotchy. At least the eyes worked out more or less okay.

Painting the stripes was not too hard with the method specified in the video. It was harder getting the right tone of blue, especially for the highlighting later.

Luke is not all white like a Stormtrooper, but he isn't that far off. So shading was again pretty frustrating. His hairdo was kinda hard as well, what with it obscuring half of his face. And him holding the gun like that is almost a crime.

I'm not sure whether I'm satisfied with how my C-3PO turned out. Sorastro painted him silvery first, then used Seraphim Sepia to tone him gold. For some reason, that didn't really work out for me, and my 3PO is now rather silvery with some gold-brown in the recesses.

Using a pen to paint the eyes and mouth worked out well (although on the macro photo I now see he has a bit of a derpy look laugh ). Thankfully, I had one of those pens lying around from my comic-drawing days (cf. my avatar and the very first picture of my gallery).

23. Mak Eshka'rey

The hardest part for Mak was to paint the harness and body suit on his torso, as that meant painting behind the gun.

I painted the hair tie in another color, and I also noticed some sort of badge on his left shoulder. With no other indication what it was meant to be, I painted it solid red, for variety's sake.

24. R2-D2

If an experienced painter like Sorastro calls a mini "fiddly", you know you're in for an annoying experience. I've never had a mini where I painted so much with my 10/0 brush.

For shading, I tried applying my black shader liberally, then, immediately after that, clean my brush and draw over the flat areas, brushing off the excess shader on some kitchen paper. This made the mini much less dark and the highlighting was less frustrating than it could have been.

25. Rebel Troopers *

The Rebel Troopers were pretty straightforward. For the shirts, I opted for the more intense blue from the artwork rather than the muted blue-gray from the movie. The Blue has a base coat of Caledor Sky with Ceramite White, shaded with Drakenhof Nightshade, and highlighted with Lothern Blue. The vest has a hint of purple in it, although it is hardly noticeable.

When painting figures, I often lay them down on the desk while holding them, to increase stability. With these figures however I often caught myself laying them down on their helmet antenna. More than one bent, and I had to carefully bend them back. Thankfully, not one broke, though it was close.
