I engage in a few odd habits or rituals when I game.
I do certain things and follow certain rules to bring me luck.
I know deep down that it's all a bunch of BS, but I keep doing it ... you know ... just in case it isn't.

Please tell me I'm not alone.

Superstitious habit: Chanting

Before rolling dice, I must imbue them with luck.
I scoop them up, shake them with both hands cupped together, and chant the magic words:

Inko chinko inko sah,
Inko chinko HOO ... BLAH.

At the "HOO" I blow into my dice, and with "BLAH" I toss them onto the board.

I learned this incantation from a buddy when I was 12.
As I've grown older, I've still chanted it -- but less and less.
It's partly because it doesn't work much.
It's partly because I look stupid doing it.

Superstitious habit: Letting dice "cool down"

Dice overheat.

If I roll a 4, 5 or 6 -- what I need in most miniatures games I play -- chances are that die's mojo is temporarily spent, and it probably won't roll another 4, 5 or 6 if I toss it again right away.
I DO NOT ROLL THAT DIE AGAIN.
I let it cool down and recharge.

I must pick up and roll only dice that show a 1, 2 or 3.
Those are cold, and have juju that is waiting to be unleashed.

This is probably a version of Gambler's Fallacy, and to my shame, I still do this religiously.

Superstitious habit: No extra rolling

Our dice rolls are fate. Don't mess with them.

When I decide not to take a certain action in a game -- something that would have involved the rolling of dice -- I do not roll them later "just to see what would have happened."

If it ends up being what I needed, I consider that a good roll WASTED.
True, a bad roll would mean I've burned off bad juju.

But to see some juicy 6s staring me in the face -- 6s that I'll never be able to use -- is just too much for me to take.

Superstitious habit: Making the Sign of the Cross

I am Catholic.

Whenever I get dealt a hand of cards I don't look at them.
I keep the stack in my hand.
For good luck, I silently bless my cards by discretely tracing a small cross on the back of the top card.
I will burn in hell for this.

Superstitious habit: Not tidying my components

When I play a board game, I never put my pieces into neat little groups or rows in front of me.

That is just asking for a jinx. Such a player is putting too much effort into the aesthetics of the game, and thus not enough into the strategy. It's as if the player is presuming he or she will win, and I must not be that player.

It's sort of like that lyric, "You never count your money when you're sitting at the table."

You never group your pieces when you're sitting at the table. There'll be time enough for tidying -- when the gaming is done.

Superstitious habit: Cutting decks

When I'm dealt a hand of cards, or when I shuffle a deck, I always cut the cards -- even when I'm playing solo.

I do it because I know the card I'll need next is buried in that stack. If I just cut it once, it'll rise to the top.

If I don't cut the cards, I'll feel uneasy. Something will feel messy -- just a little bit off.

I don't like that feeling one bit.

When I'm being dealt a hand of cards, I don't touch them until the entire hand has been dealt.

That is, of course, until the 10th or 11th straight hand of terrible, useless cards. Then I start picking them up one by one.

Neither course of action tends to bring me much luck.
