Comments:
The first time I attempted the Grizzled Viking challenge, I only got 80 points. I tried to use the Pirate heavily, tried to buy lots of houses, and tried to play lots of occupations.
The second time was fun since I sped through in maybe 1.5 hours. I did not have a big plan in mind besides doing a crazy animal breeding experiment and grabbing houses plus crafting when needed. I only played 4 occupations and tried to get as much valuable as possible from them.
Unlike my first attempt, I also focused on using the house bonus spaces earlier in the game.
I filled the home board by the end of turn 6, though I sadly had to sacrifice a cattle to do it, preventing it from becoming pregnant and giving birth on the final turn for extra points.
The end result is not amazing, but I am quite happy with it for a hurried strategy with basic optimization in mind and lots of animal breeding.
It also feels really good to have 0 wasted tiles, 0 wasted resources, and 0 negatives.

Fairly pleased! (the two reds on house 2 could have been swapped with coins at the time I think - just noticed, but I had money thru most of the game.
Good fun!

Scenario 14 FINAL ENTRY.
Score: Coming next week end Grizzled Viking challenge: 123 Blind challenge: 134
Ok,
Gotta say, grizzled challenge wasn't really fun due to the lack of possibility. I was unlucky with the mountain so I didn't manage to get a third long house like I was aiming at.
I would guess maximum score could go up to 150-160 with the extra longhouse, and a little more cash 'cause I only close my main board on last turn. With all action block, and no point in going for cattle with the little need for space... opportunity to place card are rare. Didn't play pirate, feel it was a waste to as money is to scarce early game. Use it in my blind game and end up losing 1 pts for it 'cause I never use it.
I will try again the normal challenge next week end 'cause it is doable to get way more from emigration that I got. Aiming at fulling the slots this time 'cause I still had 2 left.

Comments (optional): I really enjoyed this scenario. It broke me out of my rut and got me finding new things to do. Sure, some of the actions I used are old hat, but a bunch were unusual for me. Even more, I found myself making use of new combinations of actions. Finding out that I did slightly better than I expected was gravy. Now off to read the strategy thread!

Until the cows come home...
I wasn't expecting quite this high a score, but I didn't realize just what the cows could do on the last round. Milk three cows to prepare for the feast, double-upgrade all three to silver hoards and play Storeman, place a clothing upgraded from a cow on a previous round, and suddenly the home board is easy to fill and everything else can go towards filling the last few house spaces.
(edited to correct score and fix image link; I claimed $2 on the last round incorrectly)

Ok, I didn't see the template before I played so I think I accidentally invented a category all of my own.
I played the Grizzled Viking Blind Challenge: I scored 101 and think I fluffed it up a bit, should have got at least one more longhouse cause I had extra stuff (and capacity to buy stuff) at the end unused.

Negs on Shed -5
Total 101 for the Blind old grizzled viking whose tough but can't see where s/he goes.
I tried my hand at taking an awkward picture with my computer this time, holding the computer over the board - it's not great but it's better than nothing.

Challenging challenge! Then again I find them all challenging!
Anyway, it had to be Grizzled all the way...
Grizzled Blind attempt: 88 (though should have been a few higher as I played the Peddler wrong thinking that it only applied to buying sheep/cattle) Houses: 37 Animals: 10 Occs: 6 Silver: 17 Income: 18
Focussed on animal breeding and crafting (obviously given the Barkeep), with a late rush of houses to score some points after the home board was sorted. Only used the hunting and trapping spaces once each and the sheep shearing space. Equally I only used the Pirate occ once given that I had no problem filling the home board and was in fact left with too many large sheep/cattle tiles to convert. I would have scored a bit higher but for some reason had it in my head hat the Peddler only worked on actually buying sheep or cattle.
Grizzled Normal total: 99 Houses: 54 Animals: 4 Occs: 6 Silver: 17 Income: 18
This time I tried less hard to breed the animals and instead obtain one of each early on so I could use the four Viking space to get milk/wool and spices a couple of times. I also crafted a little less and made more use of the Peddler (now I realised my mistake) by getting an earlier Longhouse and obtaining bonuses from it. Given my lack of use of the Pirate in the first attempt, I didn't play it this time (though actually may have been able to make more use of it this time with fewer animals). This did slow down my home board a bit however and meant I didn't fill it til the last round. The score was improved, but not by that much.
[Doh! Knock -3 off that for the two green next to each other bottom right! Though I could simply have placed the ore above them between them instead!]

FINAL SCORE:
Blind/Grizzled: 108 Overall Grizzled: 112 (2nd and 3rd try)
This was neat. I thought I could do significantly better the 2nd time, then only got a tiny bit more. And then equalled it in a slightly different way the 3rd time.
I ended up doing too much in the middle so I had leftover livestock for the points... which is obviously not ideal. Still fun though, and glad to get some >100 scores from blind on through.
#2:
(where I had actually tried to use the pirate, never placed the tile, so took back the 6 silver)

Final (Grizzled) Score: 148
Blind (Grizzled) Score: 113
(Final Score) Sheds and Houses: 71 Animals: 0 Occupations: 16 Silver: 46 Final Income: 18
Negatives: -3
Total Score: 148
Ended up doing a combo of dotKeller's excellent crafting opening and sidnv's great storeman strategy. Got barkeep down on round 2 and peddler on round 4, then tried to take as many actions as possible involving those two occupations. Gathering silver from mountains was important, and ended up getting longhouses on rounds 3/5/7, and stone houses on 4/6. Hopefully I didn't end up making too many mistakes, but if so, I think it only would have affected the final score by a couple of points. This challenge was interesting because getting storeman by turn 6 was really tough: I ended up taking some strange actions like smithing and 3/2 resources in order to make the cut, but those actions ended up being pretty okay. Smithing in particular is nice to fit in since it gets you a free mead as well.
Rough Strategy Milestones: End of Round 2 - All bonuses on homeboard filled except for runestone. End of Round 4 - 2 cows for breeding on round 6 and peddler played. End of Round 6 - Entire homeboard filled via storeman.
Blind Score: 113. Forgot how I got this score.

Scenario 14 FINAL ENTRY.

Picture:
Blue occupations at bottom were not played
Sheds and houses: 54 Occupations: 14 Silver: 68 Final Income: 18 Positive Total: 154 Sheds and houses: -6 Total: 148
Comments: I meant to revisit this to try and break 150 but I dislike replaying a game with the same strategy so I decided to stick it out with this one. I did things a little different from the 3 long house strategy by rushing my home board and got it nearly full (to 15 income) by the end of round 5.
It was cool to see at least 2 different strategies work out well given how many limitations there were in this scenario.

First attempt
Second and final attempt
Comments: This was a hard scenario, but that's ok. It forces you to explore other paths. I usually don't build too many houses, but in this case it was necessary to get a decent score. I was half satisfied with my first attempt, but felt I had too many left-over goods and animals and should have built at least one more house. I improved both aspects in the second attempt, but didn't draw (and thus play) as many occupation cards, and felt I lost some points there. So it still could have been better I guess.

Grizzled Vetern for both. Great challenge had a lot of fun on this tough one. I would write more and upload photos but am on vacation and forgot to do so earlier. Perhaps next week I will add them and commment on this entry with them.
