Arcadia Quest.

This game has its position as I don't have anything else like it in my collection. It covers a few bases, and is just fun. Few criticisms stop it from ascending higher, namely bonkers set up time. Here's my description:

Gameplay is fragile but fun, bloodthirsty. Lots of plastic. Nice amount of depth, tactics to the fun factor of running around smashing one another and punting arrows. Is in the wiz wars category with no hidden information, benefit from knowing the cards etc - it's all quite fun and simple.

Oh and stand alone play is fun, campaign is very good, you get the pleasure of progress without an inordinate increase in cognitive burden.

Recommended and better than inferno.

Addendum: I wish the stand alone scenarios were a bit more developed in terms of which items you should be using.

Wouldn't play with two.

Gears and levels with auctioning. I feel I don't play this as much as I'd like. But it's one of my favourite games and has eclipsed most other auction games as it plays so well with two. It embodies so much I like about euro games, it's economic, with multiple currencies, varied and dynamic in game with a medium rules over head and lots of decisions throughout. Attention is half the time focuses towards a shared board rather than on your onastic solo board, though there's a little of that. Not thematic, but then again would you want to play a thematic representation of being a colonial spice merchant or do you want to play a game?

Great with two.

The first of several one versus all games.
Scotland Yard with bells on it, but who cares, what other game delivers an experience this fun and thematic. It's got quite a few rules, though I wouldn't say it was fiddly except for the combat. Any combat system in this game would feel adjunctive and combat itself feels like an interlude as the meat of this game is the chase. Major criticism is that it's much more fun to play as Dracula - in fact it's exquisite fun setting up roadblocks ( including actual roadblocks) to thrown off the hunters and listen to their ineffectual and erroneous planning. Another criticism is that the game - to me plays best with three. There's too much time between turns with more and you lose the conspiratorial chatter with less, and the solo player who will play all the hunters will have a largish cognitive burden tracking who has what card etc. The game drips theme. The new version, particularly the board, is lavishly produced. I'd say try it at least once, but then again I don't think you play a game once only replay it if you understand me. And I'd recommend everyone who can stomach a longer game try this one, it's one of those few times a year sort of games, and it is great.

Never much liked shuffling cards repeatedly in deck building, but I like the constructing and pruning of your 'deck'. This game does the same with a bag of tokens. Minimal interaction. I think the outcomes from 'turning' the 'gears'of your 'engine' can be a little bland, great I got some cheese - cheese equals points, great I got some wine - wine equals points, etc, however I find the mechanics getting to this point to be both fun and satisfying. It feels like this game has more levers than it actually does, either way I'd never turn down a game. The cutesy medievalism is also neat, though unthematic in the extreme. Monks are wild!

Great with two.

I have seen people bemoan this games high rating. Yes it's not Brass or
Powergrid, it doesn't feature plastic wizards or epic space battle. It's simpler than that, less grand, though it does take up too much table space in my opinion. It's a fun two player puzzler to play after tea (dinner) with your significant other, or whoever. Feel strange to set a game like this against others of more obvious bulk, but I just like it and so does everyone I've show. It too. It's not any of their favourites, but they've all liked it which personas explains its high rating. As I said it's not Brass or Powergrid, but you could gift this to almost anyone without too much concern that they wouldn't like it, unless they hate quilts a lot.

Haven't reams to say about this one. Gorgeous, simple card game that provides difficult decisions every single turn. A little long at the highest play count, but good at all the counts. It's Knizian overall, which I feel is the highest praise. The end game scoring isn't the most transparent but then neither is it particularly opaque. Again this feel like Reiner had a hand in somewhere.

Paul Walker Harding is on a bit of a roll of lately. I liked Cacao, I loved Imhotep, I like Archaeology the card game and I am looking forward to Barenpark. This one is a very generous game. Taking the original sushi go, which was a gorgeous drafting game, and making it more diverse with set set ups for different sorts of games. The game distilled what is fun about drafting and made it easy and palatable to all people, not really like sushi, which some people don't like. Maybe Seven Wonders still holds this crown, this however is my choice. Even has a decent two player set up.

Excellent 30 minute game, featuring lots of things I love in games. Asymmetrical sides. Card play. Gorgeous components and art work - I love the box art. This mini Matagot is quite deep for the weight and length of the game, overall a great package and one of the best two players in my opinion.

I feel that those perennial 'what two player game should I play with my significant other?' can be answered as follows, if you want something newish get Patchwork, Seven Wonders Duel, or Raptor, most bases being covered there though not necessarily in the best way. You want something abstract or something you can play on the beach, in the car, in a bar, yawn, etc, then Hive is a good bet.

Otherwise get something like Lost Cities, or Battleline.

San Juan. I don't know the larger more famous game that you took inspiration from! But I know you, you're one of the only games that I sold and then bought back, I've sleeved you twice! Partner finds you drab and feels you take up too much table space for a card game, but I don't agree. You can have as much table space as you like. Your muted colours and plain illustration remind me of a simpler time in game design where aesthetics were secondary to game play. Though saying that I like you just the way you are.

A thinky and smooth playing multi-use card game that's good at all the player counts. But you knew that right?

San Juan, gets most of its plays on the iPad these days, there's a decent functional implementation of the game, though there's now an excellent Race for the Galaxy app available now.... So we will see.

Great with two.

Fabulous hybrid. Less of a war game than an economic area control game with bidding, fighting and monsters that disappear like smoke. I like to get the kraken and pacman him across the board swallowing ships. My addiction to this move is probably why I also ways lose. More accessible than Kemet (though I do like Kemet a great deal) as no massive tech tree ( it's more an tech forrest in that game), can have damp squib ending or enviable Pegasus let down as conclusion. Game is changed and enhanced with the excellent Titans Expansion, which again aides it ascent over Kemet. All that comparison aside, the game play here is marvellous, my favourite auction game, with the exception of one.

Decent with two better with more.

I dont know if it's just the chrome - which isn't a problem for me generally, it's presence inspiring cynicism more than anything - or that coupled with the theme, but as dim as this game is I really enjoy it. It's a veritable dice chucker, but as someone who doesn't really like cooperative games at all, this one works for me. To quantify dim, what I mean is the absolute lack of opacity to the game, there's little subtlety here. Roll a dice to do this. Can I use my hammer to hit down the door? Yes you can. Roll a dice. You have failed to knock down the door. Can I shoot at the zombies? Yes you can. You roll a dice to do it. You have failed to hit them. That sort of thing. Though that aside, this game is going for fun factor more than anything else. And by that criteria it succeeds marvellously. You can play this game wrong and still have a good time. There is lots of space for home brewing and house ruling. There are some obvious criticisms that I will omit here with the exception that many of the quests, in fact nearly all of them, require the full compliment of characters, which just isn't right, why not have ones for fewer? That said it's easy to control more than one character at a time.

Great with two if you don't have an eversion to controlling more than one character.

Manhattan. Always thought this could have been rethemed as Trump the Boardgame. You could even put a Trump toy in and do the Godzilla variant. Then I found out that there already is a Trump boardgame, a Trump toy,and a president Trump. I digress. This is a great game to play with people who don't play a lot of games, it's also good with gamers. You can teach it in a few minutes. All my plays have been good, and building the towers is great fun. It's my gateway of choice, I prefer it to Ticket to Ride and Stone Age. However if anyone wants to buy the rights to this a beautify it through a kickstarter or however they would have my blessing.

I'd heard that this was better than Conan. I think this is the case also. I won't dwell on that here. I think part of the appeal of one versus all for me is you can please a mixed group more with it than a straight coop - which some people including me don't generally enjoy. The systems here are solid, the baddie's activation river is reminiscent of Conan and is good, the dice allocation and sharing system amongst the turtles is great and weirdly and satisfyingly gamey for a game of this type. There's a few flubs in the rule book, included one absolute howler, but the overall package and presentation is excellent. It was nice to open a game of this type and not feel there weren't enough dice immediately. As is it to have a theme that most people, who like this sort of thing, find at worse palatable.

My favourite one vs all game. Rides high on list due to how thinky it is overall - when playing I don't feel like my turns are scripted. It can make sense to allow your character to be obliterated even, which is quite thematic considering. I don't feel either way on the way turn structure works, with the Sins player interrupting the heroes. It's novel and once you've played a few times it's feels tricksy rather than interludic. I've seen this criticism written, though like most of people's problems with Lang's designs it seems to abate after multiple plays. What I also like about the game is how it's really a hybrid game as are many of Lang's designs, the heroes playing a sort of ameritrash mission guided game of pandemic, and the Sins player playing a perhaps more strategic game of manipulation, passive aggressive placing and plain pugilism. Optimal at three. Excellent at two. Can be made to fit around a wide group of players. Feels balanced. Lots of variety in the base game, most of the extras are just more stuff. Not enough dice in the box.

Minor and highly personal point: I'd much prefer a black plaguesque hiernymous bosch theme here rather than the pseudo Clive Barker vibe this has.

Great with two.

I love two player abstracts, though you can easily have too many of them. I'd rather have a couple and get good at those. I'm a big fan of Yinsh and Santorini, but my favourite is Hive. It's ascension has been sort of a slow burn. It travels excellently, I've gifted several copies away mostly for this reason, the mini expansions are great, the pieces look and feel so satisfying and the game is a brilliant alternative to chess with no set up time, low rules overhead and depth. More than perhaps any other game on my list this one is a classic in my opinion.

Five tribes: I find this game to be highly tactical and not particularly strategic. And also extremely fun. I think the central idea of moving your meeples is fun and also satisfying as you gain points for doing this intelligently. It's a point salad sure, but making the salad is fun, especially when it's as vibrant and colourful as this. I like the fact that this game is AP prone, it means there's lots to consider, saying that does it ever feel overwhelming?

Great with two - nay, perhaps best with two.

Hi Broom service? What are you doing here? I have long thought that the Jury was out on this one, for ages after I played it for the first time then sort of lukewarmly acquired a copy as I saw it on the cheap, the usual swayer, I wasn't so sure how much I liked it, but I came on round to it. I am glad I did. This game is really quite a rich experience. You get a card game, all bluff and double think, a programming aspect and pick up and deliver. I'd rather the theme was about delivering pizzas or kebabs or something, but I also enjoy hearing bearded gamers say I am the brave weather fairy quite a lot as well. The designer of this along with PWH has been on a bit of a winning streak these last few years.

Actually I think you'll find I am the brave weather fairy!

Few variants in the box that I haven't explored yet.

My economic game of choice. Powergrid feels like a once a year affair, by which time every play feels like my first. Liking Brass, I just don't know it as well as this. Game benefits immensely from the excellent online implementation on boardgamecore that's taught me if nothing else that I am not good at the game.

Opening moves feel slightly scripted. Rest of the game is highly interactive and adversarial as you like. You can't turtle away in a corner solemnly making the odd burger and expect to win; you need to shove a lemonade flavoured radio mast into everyone's face while dropping burger bombs on them, upping your production and slashing the price etc. It's mean. It's thematic.

Easy to get a bad first play of this in, many dislike it as getting poleaxed is no fun really, you have play well to remain competitive, and it's this that I like about it.

I like to think though that any starting card could be part of a winning strategy. Doesn't the game feel like it's telling you this is the case, even if experience doesn't?

Has a large degree of thematic integration that elevates this to more than a sum of its parts. There's something to do with the melding of mechanics and theme that when done well has this potential. You play as the chaos gods themselves, by nature slippery and devious, you sacrifice your own units to forward your cause, you backstab and attempt small negotiations with other players, mostly to balance out Khone's violence. All together it works as a package. I'd play it with a three, but I'd always push for 4. The minis are functional but could be better; the map's a bit of a hot mess, and the game is never to be reprinted? I'd reskin it if I was FFG, I'd go with a GOT theme and let the players represent the various string pullers in that series, though it wouldn't work as well.

Better than Blood Rage. And impossible at two, which of course Blood Rage isn't.

Tigris would be on this list if I could find people to play it with. Samurai is one of my favourite Knizias, and deservedly so. Marvellously tight tile led area control game. Short, fun; I often play two games back to back, and on one weird occasion maybe ten times back to back. It's quite compulsive, I also find it spookily thematic, same with T&E. Great components in either edition, though I prefer the melamine, or whatever, of the original. And great at all player counts. A go to 45 minute game with a bit of headiness to it makes it a stone cold winner in my book.

Great with two.

Excellent worker placement game, with imperfect information and some luck in card draw. I think the combination of a classy aesthetic, streamlined gameplay and fun factor make this my favourite worker placement game. There are lots of small things that I like about this game for example, I've played a game where an opponent almost won making close to no wine -can you win Agricola without farming? I like the fact that the cards have - is it kickstarter backers on them? photorealistic and mostly a bit weird looking. I'd play it over Stone Age, as it's only a small step up in terms of complexity. Maybe I just like wine. Maybe I have a problem. I rarely make the sparkling wine.

The best (in my opinion) dexterity game, appeals to anyone who likes snooker and pool, but you can play on your dining room table. You can get a board for less than a CMON kickstarter.

My second favourite dexterity game is Crazy Coconuts, which is the only boardgame my dog likes also.

Great at two. (Can only be played at two and four - you could fudge it at differing counts though)

I like the blandly uninvited cover on this one. It makes people at my game group not really want to play, unless they have played it before and then they do.

This is a excellent fully fleshed euro with lots to think about, decisions galore and simple rules. You can teach the core rules and a few caveats in a few minutes.

Only small knock is easy as the game is to play, end game scoring is a bit of a pain. Just be sure to stress how you actually win the game as you can finish after having been a cloth millionaire all game to be rigorously embarrassed.

The game is solid.

Great with two.

What hasn't been said about this one. It's Reiner's best game, in my opinion, which if true is saying a lot as he used to blurt out a few before lunch most days. A pruned auction game that works with two? Eh? The game is simple, scoring takes more than a moment to get your head around. Once you know what you are doing the game is almost like pulling hard on a one arm bandit, it's addictive, it's mentally quite delicious.

As I said, the top games here are as close as the two faces of a knife, but El Grande has strong armed me into putting it first. I've liked it for as long as I've known it. I think I prefer CiTOW if I have four but this plays excellently at four, and three and five. Hence if I could only play one area control game again this would be it, and if this was all I had in 1995 I wouldn't care - I wouldn't have known any better anyway.

The game also comes with two of my favourite components ever, that giant dubious pawn, and that marvellous wooden tower.

No to two. Yes to everything else. Yes.
