After visiting North America I started to think about a lost chance that we Icelanders had to settle there. Leifur Eiríksson found North America as can be read in the Icelandic Sagas. He did so in the year 1000, seeing Baffin Island, Labrador and then making camp in Newfoundland for the winter. Some people claim he made the sensible decision to loose North America again, but imagine if he had been successful and the vikings had settled in North America back then!

Which made me think of the Civilization II PC game which I played extensively when I was a teenager (and later III and IV). I've always been interested in playing a boardgame of similar ilk, but the only one I've managed to play is 7 Wonders. I bought Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization a few years back but never got it to the table (and then selling it). But has any of you played any game which is similar to Civilization? And which one do you like?

When I met Todd in Minneapolis, he mentioned a radio station that had done a poll about the most influental musician/band. I'll not mention the outcome right now, as it might influence your choice! But which musician/band do you think was really influential in one way or another? You might want to limit this to ten performers or so... and it could be any kind of music (pop, rock, classic, opera, etc.).

After my trip to North America I went to my parents farm to help them out. The most important thing was to visit their islands and pick up the eiderdown. The eiderdown is an important thing for us, and it is valuable right now (it's used for duvets). The kilo goes for 2200 USD / 1750 GBP / 2000 EUR just so you get an idea of it's value!

Anyway, I enjoy birds and like to watch them and I used to photograph them and count them occasionally. Does anyone here enjoy birdwatching? Or photographing birds? Or how about animals or insects?

Not much I played this week either - we were busy at my parents place, and since we're getting old we are tired and need our sleep!

We played two games of Traditional Card Games (Gaur and Tía) there but now that I'm back home I might get a game or two going. Although I'm going away for the weekend again, so it's a slim hope!

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

 8.2   Parade
 8.8   Battle Line x2
9.3   Zombie Dice 2: Double Feature
 8.4   Stone Age
 7   Thor x3

Last week I participated in a 'free kreigspiel' simulation set on the Korean Peninsular in 2017. In this simulation, players took the role of the major actors (US, China, DPRK, RoK, Japan) and negotiated, coordinated and competed to advance their team's agendas.

All-in-all, was a thoroughly splendid experience. The simulation itself was entertaining and engaging and offered some intriguing insights into the way things might develop on the Korean peninsula.

Over the course of the game it was interesting how much the C20th history of the region influenced players actions with most of the participant nation's first response being to play the 'Nationalism' card to shore up domestic support for their position as events unfolded.

I could have easily played for another turn or two as it was really engaging and well run. The entire experience was also a lot of fun with plenty of spirited banter, always in the right spirit, between the various sides.

On Sunday afternoon the Little Fish wanted to play Stone Age which went well but they were way too focused on building huts and despite repeated suggestions didn't pick up the cards they should have. Finished with Zombie Dice 2: Double Feature which is a great pre-dinner filler with the little guys.

The lunchtime gaming gorup is going well with plays of Battle Line, Parade and, after a l-o-n-g hiatus, Thor.

A good week of gaming!

It has to be the Unpublished Prototype as the headline game for me this week, mostly thanks to a great playtesting meetup in London, trying to avoid the sweltering heat as I walked from the station to the venue (I thought it would be a good idea, but ended up almost melted).

N/A   March Hares x3 - I have reclaimed the most logged plays spot!
N/A   Cauldron Master - Pretty decent set collecting game, looking forward to trying it again.
4   Super Munchkin - Playing games I don't like with people I do like very much is fine; though I am constantly amazed by how wobbly the design of Munchkin is.
8   Mondrian: The Dice Game x3 - This is great with 4 players, though we did get the rules slightly wrong.
9   Love Letter x2 - Oldy but goody.
N/A   Unpublished Prototype x5 - One play was my own game, and the others were a wide variety of styles, and very enjoyable.

Another fun week of gaming, although I played nothing new, and nothing at all on the 15th. Thus ends my 112 day gaming streak. I was tempted to push it (we had a little activity running in a facebook group), but decided not to, I never wanted this to be a record hunt, really.

Not school holidays, and I played nearly as many games with my children as with other adults this week! My husband was away for the weekend, so I used the opportunity to play some games with my children. Plus my son's homework was to play a Memory variant involving volume measures! They played Bohnanza for the first time in months, and liked it so much we played it both days. And I introduced the older two to Farming (the youngest found the maths involved frustrating) - but then we were so involved in it that I forgot to start cooking dinner, and we didn't eat until nearly 8pm at night - oops!!!

Games with other adults:

9   A Fake Artist Goes to New York x2
 9   Pictomania x2
 10   Terraforming Mars x2
 8   Liar's Dice
 9   Patchwork
 10   Race for the Galaxy
 9   Saint Petersburg
 9   Suburbia
 9   The Game (2015)
 9   Through the Desert

Gaming with my children:

 9   Bohnanza x2
 7   Memory x2
 8   Crappy Birthday
5   Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Zoo-Wee Mama Card Game NEW!
 10   Dominion
 8   Farming
 9   Machi Koro
5   Story Craze: The Crazy Story Game

 5   Monopoly Deal Card Game
 7   Doro-Doko
9   Throne and the Grail x3
 8   Louis XIV
 8   Hanamikoji
 8   Haggis
 7   Scrabble x2

Noteworthy games:

Monopoly Deal has some interesting hand management aspects, but I could easily get rid of this game and not miss it. S loves it, so I'm sure that won't happen soon.

Throne and the Grail, on the other hand, is brilliant. N's sister and I ended up in a best of three competition after we discovered we couldn't put it down. The other games that we broke out that night--Louis XIV, Haggis, Hanamikoji--were equally satisfying, although I think I prefer Louis XIV with three and Haggis with two.

N and I took out Scrabble, our first date game. I have to learn not egg her on when we play. I have a rather nasty bruise on my shoulder.

A slightly strange play of Troyes; an event card that took money from you each turn appeared right at the start, and as a result I was virtually penniless and could do very little for the first half of the game. Someone I ended up winning but I'm not sure how!

Troyes x 1
De Beer ist los! x 1
Race for the Galaxy x 2
Love Letter x 1 (in the beer garden of our local pub whilst supping a pint from their beer festival on a nice sunny day!)
Pinguin Party x 1

EDIT: Oops, this was meant for next week's list... D'oh!

For the second week running I feel compelled to use the Unpublished Prototype as my game of the week. Well, it has been all about the playtesting, thanks to a playtest meetup in Oxford, an evening visit to a game designer friend, and a couple of local sessions. All good stuff...

N/A   Unpublished Prototype x7 - Some were mine, some other peoples'.
7   Downsize x3 - Going down well as a lunchtime play.
