Another light showing of just 4 of us. I show up and mention I'm a bit sleep deprived. Dave expresses happiness "anything that will give me a better chance".
I respond, "you're willing to blind me just to be better at games?"
Dave - "Well, I wouldn't go that far. Maybe break an arm."
I tell yah, with friends like these...

What did we play this week?

Dave's new hotness. I know he played it at Adam's 2 weeks ago. There was some teasing about getting a rule wrong (that never happens). Dave was bragging that he wasn't going to get any rules wrong today. He got 2 rules wrongs. 1 involved the Giants which Ross caught early enough to back track easily and play correctly for the rest of the game. The other involved the merfolk board. We were awarding points when hitting certain spaces instead of giving an extra band placement. Near impossible to correct that.

Played races: Giants, Merfolk, orcs, wizards, skeletons, and minotaurs

Troy focused on the giants early and often and got a huge lead. He then switched to merfolk getting past space 12 for lots of 'not-supposed-to-be' points.

I was doing mostly orcs and merfolk. Managed 3 orcs round 1 and got the other 3 round 2 which scored for the full 20. Couldn't get any orcs on the final round. Merfolk were similar, got an early lead but didn't get any more on the final round. I focused my efforts on the orange region which scored 2-6-10. I think I had most all 3 rounds, but I don't think I won anywhere else. There was a lot of ties for 0 points. Also, the last round was horrible for me. I think I only played 2 bands. I kept drawing cards needing 4 blues to play where I wanted, but I only had 3. I hit the hand limit of 10 cards when the round ended. Boo.

Ross mostly ignored the merfolk and really liked the wizards for extra card draw. I think he controlled 3 regions (or tied for control). And Dave did stuff too... I just don't remember what.

Either a first time play for Troy or it's been long enough he needed a refresher.

I kinda felt like Phil from the last time I played. Locked out of the research cards. I think I still had only a 1-1 capability at the end of the 2nd round. I ended the game with 1 engine, 4 body research. Really couldn't compete. I tried to offset that by racing. I completed the first lap round 1. I was really close to getting a 2nd lap, but someone moved their car out of the way and I was 1 space shy. Grr. I would also throw in crappy cars into the market for the lowest price and try to get that buyer out. Was hoping to grab the engineer that triples lowest buyer (or the other engineer that has tokens to add 2 or 4 money to a buyer), but couldn't. 2nd round, I used almost all my tokens (5-6) to grab the most prestigious buyer from someone for max 12 money that round. I was also able to use one of the special A action tokens to sell a crappy car for 3 money. It was a 1-1 so I wasn't going to get more for it.

Dave and Ross were in an arms race over research cards. Dave ran out of tokens multiple times over the course of the game grabbing cards. Ross was a little more efficient. All of his cards had 2 symbols. Most of them were both body and engine. I lost track of who got which first award, but I definitely wasn't in contention for most of it.

Troy on the other hand loved the engineers. He ended the game with 5-6 of them. Most of them provided tokens to do various things. A lot of them were still unused at the end of the game. He did copy my strategy of throwing the first crappy car into the market for the lowest price and getting that buyer out. One of his tokens was then placed on that buyer to pay him $4 more.

I briefly thought I was 2nd when Dave announced his score. He forgot to add his 'first to do a thing' awards though. Pull the rug out from under me why don't you.

Troy said he had to leave in about an hour, so we played this. We even did the set up correctly unlike last time!

Where's the Darth Vader "NOOOOOOO!" meme? That was the ongoing joke for this game. Every time someone bought a tile or took a card someone yelled that because they wanted it. The worst for me was when I said "at the end of my last turn, I had exact change for 2 tiles. They're not out there anymore."

The first scoring round came rather early I thought. Most of the majorities (*pushes glasses up nose* it's really a plurality) were won with a single tile. One of the colors hadn't even shown up yet. Troy had built the most tiles and had 4-5 different colors and started off with a bit of a lead.

The 2nd scoring round was a little more interesting. Some colors were tied, others were over committed and locked in. I think Dave had 4-5 green and Troy over half the brown. I was leading white, but Troy was close. I had the lead after majority (plurality!) scoring, but Troy had a 10+ wall keeping him in the lead, but just barely.

Final scoring - Ross bought the last tile to end the game. It either gave him the most purple by 1 or tied Dave. There was another purple tile left over though and Dave claimed it. I had 2 walls of 6-7 each, but no way to connect them. I was overly worried of boxing myself in. I was expecting to lose the game on wall scoring, but I had just enough. This is the closest game I've seen though with 5pts separating first and last.

We had time for 3 rounds. Trying something new with the score format to show all 3 rounds.

Round 1, I was the last in most of the time and I would randomly draw good stuff for me. Ross would grouss. Still wasn't enough though. Dave had like 8-10 +2 cards. I had a group of 6, a group of 4, 2 groups of 2 (one counted negative) and a couple of singles.

Round 2 - I though I did really well with a group of 6, a group of 4, a group of 3, and 2 singles with a couple of +2 cards. Then I saw the other players score. Gaining 4 pts wasn't going to be enough.

Round 3 - Dave gave me a bit of a gift on the final hand letting me add 2 cards to a group of 3. I ended with a group of 6 and a group of 5, forget the rest, but it was enough to push me over the top. I never win this game. Maybe I should play 3 player more often.
