Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- July 2017

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

Kids on Board Games Geeklist - SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

This Month

Welcome to the first Kids on Board games geeklist.

Having been a member of the SGoYT and WCHBP I was inspired (i.e. decided to rip off the idea) to create this list for those of us who regularly or occasionally play board games with kids. I'm hoping that seeing what others are playing, how those games work and getting some direct feedback from kids themselves plus a view from the participating adults eye will inspire us to dig out those games or try something new.

Once we get going we may have some small monthly challenges or themes (e.g. try a Pick Up and Deliver game this month) but in the meantime feel free to offer your thoughts and advice about the list but above all, take a look around, make yourself at home, and have fun!

My D (10) looooovvesss Tobago. She's a real mystery, treasure, secrets theme type of girl so this game really speaks to her. She says "I like the way you are playing for yourself but also working together to choose where the treasures are found."

And she is very good at it. She easily and quickly translates the clue cards under each treasure type onto the appropriate hexes/areas on the board.

My B (8) isn't that fussed about it. He enjoys driving the ATV around and takes great pleasure picking up amulets. He is pretty good when adding clue cards to the treasures but sometimes needs to be told that that card cannot go on that treasure. He says "It's exciting but there's lots to think about."

We really like Tobago too and have no problem playing it with them. Although, my wife, M, finds it hard to decide which treasure to go for and usually ends up last because of it.

D = two thumbs up ; B = one and a half thumbs ; M = came last(!)

I doubt many would think of a GMT game as a kid's game, but if you are familiar with X-Wing, Talon is quite easy ... and more intuitive.

Mr. E (10 at the time, 11 today) and I played a shorter scenario. He crushed me by causing my ships to collide with one another. It was brutal and embarrassing for me. Mr. E loves the different ways the game can play out, where sometimes clever attacks are necessary, sometimes attrition. It also works well because the setup is short and most of the relevant tracking can be done right on the counters with dry erase. There's no opportunity for his enthusiasm to wane. For a tactical game a lot of planning is required, adjusting the power curve to charge weapons or to speed up.

I've been playing Carcassonne with my 3yr old. First time for him. It is setup on the game table and we play a few turns every couple of days. We are not playing by the rules but are working on the concepts. Placing meeples (what's a meeple? ), scoring roads and cities. I have some of the expansions in there and he is loving moving the dragon to any tile that has the dragon on it. No farmers yet.

I score as he completes the items but we don't have a rolling score. It is more about playing together and building a large city.

Still too soon for him to really play it by the rules. But he is having fun in short bursts.

"Dad, I'm almost out of meeples."

A morning game of Splendor with my 8 year old. She was ahead for half the game, but then I got two of the Noble tiles in successive turns and made a surge on level 2 cards to scoop the win, 17 to 7.

Great game for the kids as the mechanisms are simple, and the engine building gives them a lovely sense of achievement, even when they don't win.

This game has been the hotness lately with my almost 4-year-old. She's not quite strategizing yet, but she definitely understands the cause and effect nature of the game. She even caught a path to my objective that I missed one time.

And... we've blinged it. Now I feel like I need the whole set of mini figs. Sky only loosely counts as red. We need Marshall, Rubble, and Rocky. shake

We gave this to Mr. E for his birthday. The volume of stuff impressed him. We took it to our FLGS today and played three games: the tutorial, the first scenario, and a variant of the first scenario, which Mr. E put together because we were destroyed in the second game. Despite wanting the game, he feared it would be very complicated. It was not, to his relief. Indeed, he declared it to be his second favorite game. I like it as well, mostly because of how smoothly the programing worked: it took the game from decent co-op to compelling.

We put some images of our plays on instagram.

We went to a great little FLGS (Games Unlimited) in Pittsburgh today. Tomorrow is my birthday, and I thought I would have a look around! They let you demo a lot of games! So we played this. Ben (age 7) seemed to enjoy it, but there wasn't much interest after.

I got Scythe: Invaders from Afar as part of my birthday present!

Played this with my 10 year old daughter Sophie. She was originally apprehensive of this (as she is with most games!), however, the simple card drafting mechanic soon won her over. She enjoys most of the gateway games that I've introduced to her so far (includes Takenoko, Ticket To Ride Europe, King of Tokyo) and is now adding this to the list!

When playing with her, I also look to give her things to look out for. For Medici:TCG, I managed to give her some insights into looking at what others have been building up rather than just taking the highest scoring cards so that she might either gain majorities or prevent others getting a majority (although taking the highest scoring cards tactic has been known to work!)

I take it as a good sign that she's asking to play this more!

My youngest daughter (6) had a sleepover and at some point, during the afternoon her friend (7) became curious about "all those boxes on the wall."
Fast forward, Saturday 0715 the kids approach me about playing games...I jumped at the opportunity and this was the first to hit the table. It hits the bullseye every time!
Easy to teach, fun to play, does not overstay its welcome and opens kids and parents alike up to the idea that there are family kids outside of Candyland and Chutes and Ladders.

I'm still on the fence about this one. It is so similar to Incan Gold (push your luck) but requires twice as long to setup (especially for what it offers). That said, it was a new acquisition and I enjoyed playing it with my wife, my daughter, and her friend. So much in fact, that we played 4 games in a row.
The airship is a huge hit for them...also being able to play the eject card to "kick daddy off the ship"...

Bought this today and played it with my 13 year old daughter. She is not a gamer by any stretch of the imagination, but she LOVED it! It felt a little simple to me, but it was just the right pace for her. She won the game. I wasn't paying close enough attention and didn't realize how near she was to finishing. She said she wants to take this on vacation, which outside of Apples To Apples, she has never said about a game.

An oldie but a goldie Picked this up second hand recently and we're now on the 5th Quest 'Melar's Maze' and the boys have met the Gargoyle for the first time.

They are really enjoying it, especially getting to team up against me. I have now realised though how easy it is for the Hero's to win at this game, especially the early quests, which is spoiling some childhood memories.

It feels like a good gentle introduction into dungeon crawlers.

I played Dominion with LB(8) today. We've been playing it a quite bit lately. He caught on pretty quickly since he's been steeped in Pokemon and Magic for the last few months of school. He likes the variety of cards and keeps demanding to try new sets. We've stuck to the original and Intrigue so far, but as I own everything, I suspect there will be more entries to this list soon.

He's a fairly advanced reader for his age, so the wording on the cards doesn't give him much trouble. We talk through cards he hasn't seen before we play, so he has an idea how each one might work, but he's catching on fast and it's mostly odd-balls that he has questions on.

LB - 2 thumbs and two toes way up!
LG(4.5) - Desperately wants to play.

There was open play at our FLGS. I had hoped to play with my son (we picked up some M10s for his birthday). Unfortunately, there was an odd man out, and Mr. E and I teamed up against him. It was perhaps not as satisfying as it could be. Mr. E and I are still new to the game, learning the ins and outs, and our opponent was a seasoned tournament player. We definitely learned more about the game. However, we were looking forward to something more casual: that special moment when your kid beats you and holds it over your head.

BTW, I would probably warn parents away from this. Tanks: Panther vs Sherman is a great tactical game that uses the same 15mm models, but which is more of a skirmish in the style of X-wing. It sets up more quickly, the rules are simpler, and in the end, a shorter and more enjoyable experience. My son loves FoW, so we will continue to play it.

Played another game with my 10 year old girl in what has become our favorite go-to game. We've advanced to Veteran difficulty and the 2 door house. I think we've settled on a pair of roles (Veteran and Generalist) and a strategy that has delivered us nothing but success since we started. Will have to test it out some more and maybe try to work in some other combos and see if we can come up with any more synergistic roles.

I've been able to watch her tactical play and understanding of the game system and objective flourish more so than other games we have a history of playing. It's been great to see here formulate a good plan and be able to explain/understand why it is a good plan. I've been shutting up a lot more and letting her call her own shots a lot more than I was earlier. Advice and suggestions still come out, but I am enjoying sitting back and letting her figure it out.

Great, great, great game. I am very glad to have it and happy that she enjoys it so much.

My wife isn't too interested in games, so I am perhaps a little over-eager to indoctrinate my W (3). We've had a few of the HABA my first games, but these are treated as toys more than games. Max was a big hit a month or so ago, and the first game we played per the rules (he loves to move Max)... until a game where Max ate two of the animals and he cried. whistle Since then, not so much.

Anyhow, one of his friends is reportedly playing 'Go Fish' and 'Uno', so obviously I rush to the closest thrift store and pick up a copy of each. Grandma and grandpa are visiting, so we all sit down for a game of 'Go Fish'. He seemed interested enough at first, but it didn't click -at all- and after two "games" he was soon off playing trains again. Ah, well. It was worth the toddler 'I don't get it'/'you're absolutely bonkers' look. laugh

Part way through the game

In Ninja Camp each player starts with the same two cards and every turn you play a card and use that skill to move one of your Ninja meeples (ninjeeples?) around the "board", a grid of cards. After your move, you pick up the card you moved from and this becomes a new manoeuvre you can play later. So as you go along the board gets smaller and tighter. Each card also has a point value with very useful cards scoring low points whilst strong situational cards score high. At the game end you score all the cards you collected and the one with the most points wins.

It's a fairly light game but requires some deep thinking at times to make the most of your situation as you can be blocked in by walls, surrounded by traps or just cut off a bit like Hey That's My Fish.

You also get a cool Ninja Clan card with a one use ability - I was the Polar Bear clan and got to move diagonally and move a card to where I wanted. The artwork is quite attractive all through the game.

B (8) said he likes doing the Ambushes and thinks it'll make a good camping game as the box is small. G (10) (today's winner with 38 points) said it can be frustrating at times but is great fun. M likes it, simple rules but lots to think about with the ever shrinking 'board' too.

Two thumbs up all round!

My version came with the Badges and Activities mini expansions and I think the Activities look great to change things up a bit once we're more competent!

My birthday morning (yesterday) was started with this household favorite. Me vs Ben, my wife, and Spots Ben's stuffed animal. Spots won and I was dead last! Then it was off to the Pittsburgh zoo! A great day.

Just had three games of this with our son (8 yrs)

This is another of his favourites. Asked him why. He replied, "Just really like it".

I think he likes it because it plays fairly quickly and he likes winning cards off me. Needless to say, he's not keen when I take cards off him!

This is a quick card game with a strong take that element. It has rather nice artwork.

My $2 purchase from last years B&N Red Tag Sale, now enhanced with $20 of new golems!

Mr E and I have had fun with this before, but being able to play six golems each made for an epic slugfest. This was also the first time we did any army building, which after we figured out how to work that part of the app, went smoothly.

The game, perhaps the first to use an app, seems to be easy for a kid to pick up. In some ways,in plays almost as 30% video game, and the fact that the app keeps track of stats and effects means that much of the burden to running the game is gone.

Image can be found on our instagram.

We had to pack some smaller more portable games for holiday and this is always a favorite as it can be played 2 to 6. Last night was a grand game and I snuck in a win on the final turn where Kyle went nil on 10 and would have won with that 100 had he not made one bad play that cost him 100 and the victory... too bad for him... great for me.

Edit. Kyle 13 - Samantha 11

Great bidding trick taking game with the Yo Ho Ho bidding mechanism that is always fun.

My D (10) asked to play this one so who were we to refuse. It even turned out that M had never played this which was really strange as it was an early purchase for me and me and the kids have played a fair bit (I play it solo regularly.) In fact I think I started the kids on it when B was about 5 and D was 7.

We got lucky with all the treasure tiles being quite close together, but we were one card and one turn (or one sandbag) away from victory when Fools Landing disappeared beneath the waves.

Everyone enjoyed how nerve wracking it got late on and fortunately everyone took the loss well, although the loss affected D's score:

thumbsup Easy to learn, quick to play, looks lovely on the table
