With attendance swinging back up, we had: EP Chris, ND Nick, Paul, T101 James, Chris Nash, Brother Chris, Jon, Andrew B2, Maddy and Esther for 3 tables!

Missed what Chris Nash, Brother Chris and Jon were playing apart from Chaosmos

So after building sky scrapers in New York. ND Nick, Paul, james and Chris went off to build influence in the galaxy.

This is a hybrid of a role selection and deck builder.

We started with the scenarios which give each player a different starting deck, technology card and planet. From there we all went off our specialised ways.

Paul made the most of his technology, beating a bloody path across the galaxy. Nick reqsearched heavily. James got into trading and I started colonising as many planets as I could get my grubby little hands on.

One of the more interesting parts of this game is the race to the technology cards that benefit you and that you can build combos for. They are all available and there are a fair number of them. This is also the downfall as new players need to get to know them.

The scores at the end of the day were:

EP Chris 24
T101 James 21
Paul 20
ND Nick 11

I do enjoy this, but don't get t to the table nearly enough with a consistent group for it to shine. I've got the two expansions ready to go as well!

Andrew B2, Esther and Maddy started off by building some stained glass windows. New to me but Esther and Maddy had played before.

We all went for four-point windows. The bonuses were sets of 1 and 2 pointers, different numbers in a row and sets of five colours. Maddy and I had managed to maximise our scoring with the bonuses but I had done better with placing my colour. Final scores and positions were:

Andrew B2 55 (1)
Maddy 54 (2)
Esther 43 (3)

I actually quite enjoyed that. It's got dice so there is a bit of randomness but the length of game balances it out.

After mentioning that I only had fillers both Maddy and Esther asked if I had No Thanks which they had played for the first time the previous week. What they hadn't grasped was the pushing your luck part of the game - i.e. sending round a card you want to get the other players to donate cards to it. We played three hands:

First hand I tried to push my luck but Esther refused to let me get away with this on principle and as a result we both ended up with quite a few gaps and individual cards. Maddy managed to get a nice run of cards from 30 up, but could probably have pushed it more (and got a few more coins.

Andrew 63
Esther 82
Maddy 52

Second hand and they were catching on to the part of the game about pushing your luck. Maddy got caught out with some high scoring cards but the scores were:

Andrew 63 + 36 = 99
Esther 82 + 27 = 109
Maddy 52 + 66 = 118

Final hand and my greater familiarity with the game was no longer an issue and it was clear I was becoming predictable. Final scores and positions were:

Andrew 99 + 47 = 146 (1)
Esther 109 + 41 = 150 (3)
Maddy 118 + 40 = 148 (2)

I had just about done enough to keep the win! Always love this game.

Next up for Esther, Maddy and I was Isle of Skye. I stumbled over a rules explanation with a little help from the fifth avenue table.

My recall of this game is a bit more hazy, probably because I was focused on remembering the rules. The scoring tiles were most ships, most barrels, number of mountains, number sets of three buildings and - two I can't recall at the moment.

I struggled for money for most of the game. Maddy went into the lead quite quickly and drew a number of rubbish tiles that she priced accordingly and therfore picked up quite cheaply. Esther had good tiles almost every turn and no matter what she priced them at; Maddy and I always bought them which meant that her clan territory did not expand that quickly. Esther hung back in 3rd place for most of the game and then shot into first place on the final turn.

The final scores I recorded don't look right from my memory of the game. blush

What I have is:

Andrew 67
Esther 30
Maddy 61

Maddy/Esther - any corrections?

After saying they had to leave quite quickly we decided on a quick game of Hanabi that probably took us about half an hour. A lot of table chat but it always stopped short of actual clue giving.

Final score was 21.

Now if I am honest, quite a big part of this was luck. The cards came out in a very helpful order and made it easy to figure out part of our hands from what we could see. Also every risky play (it's got to be one of these two cards.....) paid off. Still 21 is the best display I've ever achieved.

With Maddy and Esther having to leave, I joined Jon, Brother Chris and Chris Nash for a hand of this.

Again we were quite lucky with our cards and roles and achieved this with relative ease.

Jon and Brother Chris started a quick game of this before Chris Nash arrived. Brother Chris won quite handily.

Jon, Brother Chris and Chris Nash settled down to search for the mystical egg allowing them to the impending destruction of the known universe.

After exploring for most of the game, Jon concluded that a Chris had the egg and bided his time until Brother Chris lost a battle to Chris Nash with 9 turns left on the clock. Then Jon attacked the nearly defenceless Chris Nash to obtain the Ovoid and accelerated the end of the universe, leaving Brother Chris one turn to obtain the ovoid and win the day.

Unfortunately, brother Chris lost the final battle and Jon was triumphant.

Well finally, after 10 years, this got its first outing.

Joining me were: Paul, Nick and Chris - all, like me, had never played before.

Conclusion: not exactly the 2nd coming but a far better game than I expected and I'd definitely be happy to play again. Be interested in others thoughts.

The first auction round was triggered quickly and bidding was high. Nick missed out on the chance to build any skyscrapers, but this seemed to leave him in a strong position for the 2nd auction round where he won some bids with much lower amounts.

Paul capitalised by forcing an auction round when Chris and I both left ourselves short of skyscrapers in our personal supplies. Though Nich did the same to him shortly afterwards.

Chris really suffered from his early high bids (which is one of the disadvantages of auction games the first time you play them) and not having skyscrapers in his supply to build on several auction rounds.

Going into final scoring I thought Paul had it, but he had no skyscrapers around Central Park and Nick surged past him. The Central park scoring is an unneeded random element but I worked out Nick would have had to be very unlucky not to have won.

Can't recall the scores:
1. Nick
2. James
3. Paul
4. Chris
