So, this week and a few weeks before we have seen absolutely beautiful weather in the UK. Whenever I've had a chance I've been out in my garden enjoying it as best I can. This got me to thinking, what are the Meatballs' relationships with the outdoors?

What are your views on flowers? If you were to plant some flowers (or have someone do it on your behalf) do you like to see a riot of flowers in every space, varied and interesting? Or does foliage do it for you? A few each season or one big push in the Summer?

8   Quantum - Taught this to a couple of newish gamers. They really enjoyed it though they struggled with the finer points of the tactical space. I played 3p with the t shaped map and had my first game in which it appeared almost interminable.
7   Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers - First time I've played this one in some time. Still the best.

At home
9   Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 x2 - We'd been doing well till May but we had a couple of games of poor decisions and horrendous card draws leading to massive chain reaction outbreaks. So we lost both games in May. Hopefully we'll put in a better showing next time out.
7   FlowerFall - Quick filler while we awaited our main game of the night

7   Hey, That's My Fish! x2 - So proud of my girl, she beat me at HtmF on her second try (though she trolled me be agreeing that we'd only play 'nicely' the second time around but immediately started to cut me off).

This weekend I've been mostly playing with my new chainsaw (chopping up some Hazel trees we felled at the bottom of the garden in spring), and looking after the bees that are almost back to being queen-right.

Husband is off work, but we've mainly been working on the house.

A friend came around on Saturday and we played the first two scenarios of Galaxy Defenders. Not much I can say, apart from that it's a great coop game with an X-Com theme. It's more fun with three than two, although it's pretty good fun with two.

The T.I.M.E. Stories Expedition Endurance came out while our games were in storage, so we've only just started playing this adventure pack. It's got a couple of innovations to the time travel mechanics, such as the runs being at two different dates, but definitely feels 'emptier' than previous packs. It's also got a very obvious Cthulhu mythos theme, which isn't even a spoiler to a remotely genre-savvy player, but which feels overdone and less fun than a historical mystery.

Remarkably fun for a game based on dominos that takes 15 minutes. We played two games while waiting for the oven to preheat in a time slot that didn't automatically feel long enough for game playing. Kingdomino felt like a real game with real choices. Definitely growing on us.

Through the Ages 2p - Hadn't played this in a while. Such a satisfying game. We didn't do much military which was fine by me. Debbie opened w/Hamurabi, but I got the pyramids soon after, so actions were somewhat even. I went early Iron while Debbie went early science... one thing I love about the game is you can't really do everything, so you have to pick something and suffer that something is lagging behind.

GAME NIGHT

Dungeon Fighter 5p - A throw dice at a target game. This held interest for me only insofar as I wanted to play it once. There's not much more to it, and I'd be happy to never play it again.

Bucket Brigade 4p - Someone got dealt all wilds and greens, so won the heat handily; this game was cut short after 1 heat for dinner.

Airships 4p - The game ending as soon as all piles are down to 1 card seems awfully fast; we played on until only 1 card in total remained on the board. Has anyone else played this that has feelings about game length?

Concordia 4p - I continue to be impressed by this game. It's just incredibly cohesive with all the parts working together in perfect harmony, tightly put together to make something very satisfying. Endeavor gives me a similar feeling, where everything effects everything else, sort of exactly the way that a "point salad" game doesn't.

Power Grid with the Monday night group. I just do not feel the love for this game, though I can perceive its merits. At least I got us to play on the France map so I could think about France.

Then a couple days later with my mom I got to punch and play my new copy of Oracle of Delphi.

And this weekend there was a great day of Dominion x16.

Things are still difficult at home, so I haven't played that much. I have played Stone Age with Hannibal (thanks for the game!). I play Patchwork every day with Ed as its the one game he will play with me. I've just got him to play Tsuro too. He likes abstract games, and anything that involves building up shapes.

Thanks to people who have sent me games. Paul - I haven't been able to accept a game of Carcassonne as it times out, and then I can't reinvite people because I don't have subscription access on BGA. Is there any way round this? I'm happy to play games with others!

Tuesday: games night at Sam's

NMBR 9 x2 - Polyominoes seem to be in right now, which suits me as I like spatial games. NMBR 9 is of the true-multiplayer-solitaire 'bingo' family, like Take It Easy and Karuba. It's a quicker teach than either of those and I enjoyed the simplicity. I'm not sure how much of a learning curve it has though - I more than doubled my score from 1st game to 2nd once I'd appreciated how important not leaving holes is.

Montage - two of the players from last week were keen for another go and another crossword-fan was roped in too. Delightful!

Bärenpark - And more Tetris pieces. This one is most similar to Cottage Garden and Patchwork, with each player acquiring pieces from a common area to accommodate in their individual board. Phil Walker-Harding really knows how to make a smooth-playing game and I liked Barenpark much more than the slightly fiddly Cottage Garden. But with that smoothness can come a feeling of too much balance. It's hard to see how players will ever end up far apart in scoring, unlike in the superior Patchwork.

Cobras - another repeat play for a new-to-me from the week before. Really impressed by this one - it was just as good 4p as with 3.

Fuji Flush - and good old FF to finish.

Wednesday - Joe's at lunch and later at home

Crokinole x3 - Joe recently sold a bunch of underplayed games and spent the proceeds on importing a handsome Crokinole board from Hungary for his studio. Great fun, though I seem to have a distinct upper hand at present!

Jump Drive - another game with Sarah and I manage to restore some pride this time

Kingdom Builder - After setup, I always announce the maximum number of points each condition can bring. And yet, I still refuse to go for Miners (max 40) or Fishermen (max 40) over Citizens (max 20). Naturally, I finished third out of three.

Delve: The Dice Game x2 - The game has an interesting way to translate D&D classes into a Yacht mechanism, but the game itself isn't all that interesting. This solo game is no longer on my phone.

Jasper and Zot - Like a bad translation of Plants vs. Zombies into board game format that only exists for the phone. The exact medium where upon I can play the quite excellent actual Plants vs. Zombies. Deleted from the phone.

FITS x2, BITS - I can't justify owning both of these, even though they are both great fun to play. While what you physically do is different enough while playing, the way one thinks while playing feels pretty much the same to me. FITS is the game that people get right away. as long as they are old enough to have played Tetris and there are expansions. However, MC played BITS for the first time this week and enjoyed it too much to let me let it go.

Shephy - Gave it one last chance, but between the UI activating cards when I just wanted to read them AND giving me an opening hand that can do nothing but kill sheep, I deleted the thing. A failure for me both in medium and game play.

_9_ Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases - 1 Player

_7_ Gulo Gulo - 3 Players
_7_ Fabled Fruit - 3 Players
_7_ Finca - 2 Players
_7_ Hey, That's My Fish! - 2 Players

(1) Louis XIV - A good old, streamlined, quality Euro from 2005. Two of us had played before and two hadn't. We finished with scores of 47-48-49-50. A game of Louis isn't always that close.

(2) Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective - I completed case #10 and now I'm ready for the next set of cases. I answered almost all of the questions correctly and followed 8 more leads than Sherlock for a score of 55. Not great, but not terrible. I've definitely learned how to approach these better after getting through 10 cases.

(3) Rampage - Dane and I faced off in this one and, in typical Dane style, he knocked out all of my teeth. I did the same back to him. I ate every rooftop in the game but one. I ended up winning by a pretty sizeable margin, monopolizing the consumption of tourists, but that isn't the norm when we play.

(4) Banjooli Xeet - Marie, Dane and I raced the ostriches. It was a doozy of a round with all of the ostriches progressing through the straightaway track. Usually, there are just a few birds that get going fast and others are left behind... not this time. In the end, Dane got first, second and third correct but not the last place bonus. He won.

Just wanted to drop in and say I snuck in a game of android netrunner. Had to relearn the rules on the fly, but my gamer buddy saw it on the shelves and remembered having played the game a long time ago so between making sure the two kids didn't self immolate we had a fun time with a jinteki-shaper confrontation. I managed to win with the help of two really bad luck HQ draws hitting snares that crippled his early game...and then he was finally killed late game with a run on R&D where he hit another snare.

Whoo bad luck for him, but yet again a great game. Hopefully I'll be playing with him more....though I have no idea when I'd find the time.

Meetup

 8   The Colonists NEW!

At home

 8   Fabled Fruit NEW!

Two new games, both of which I really enjoyed. At the meetup, I picked up a copy of Fabled Fruit and got drawn into a game of the latest superlong euro The Colonists, which took practically the entire night (5 hours). We were 3 and we only played the first 3 ages, so I'd imagine with 4 players and all four ages you'd hit 8-10 hours pretty easily. On the other hand, 2 of us were new to the game so I'd imagine future plays would be a bit shorter.

The game is obviously wildly overextended, doesn't really pivot into anything to justify that length, and features practically zero player interaction, but in spite of these practically irredeemable flaws I still enjoyed the game a lot and would happily play it again. The game has a single-mindedness about logistics and storage that's just charming, and the variations on board assembly and embassies seem to have a real impact on play. Although I suppose I would have to play multiple times to really tell...

Yes, if I had my druthers I'd probably play 2 Splotter titles in the same period of time, but Colonists exercises the brain a little differently and is much less tense. (Which could be a bad thing, but spending 8 hours on pins and needles might be bad for your mental health.)

The flipside of the coin is that I once felt the same way about Through the Ages after a few plays online, but further plays really brought it down and I don't think I'd enjoy the game much were I to play it again. It's possible that further plays would bring The Colonists down, but it's probable that I won't play it enough for that to happen.

On the other side of the heaviness scale, I opened up Fabled Fruit and played it once last week (and a few more times since then). I'm really enjoying the system, which really allows for control of the cards on offer and a good bit of planning. The game changes, sometimes in obvious and other times less obvious ways, and there's some subtlety in the way the locations come out.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
The first "obvious" strategy is to build up a huge hand and play it out in succession, a la Ticket to Ride. This will probably work for the first game, but location #10 will come out shortly through your second game and really mess up the player with the big hand of cards. The market also comes out, which gives you much more selectivity in what you get, further helping the quality over quantity players. The draw 3 if you're the poorest location has just come out, which seems to further help out with that.

Early on the market can clog if all of the fruits of one type are less useful in buying juices, but then the "take all of 1 type from the market" location will come out and unclog the market very quickly. To avoid giving Alexandra tons of fruit, I had to make some suboptimal trades before I bought juice... but she bought the juice I was looking for, and I ended up losing the game.

Players are forced to choose between using pineapples to purchase card #1 or discard them to draw cards. Less strategic players will probably use card #1 a lot (it's simpler) and aim to purchase the "6 fruits of any color" location (the discard 2 pineapples for 5 fruits). Purchasing this as juice is very inefficient earlier in the game, costing 6 fruits for one juice instead of the 4 or 5 it would normally cost. But if they purchase this, that pineapple release valve will be gone, and card #1 will be purchased, forcing them to branch out and aim for fruit quality over quantity. At least, this is what happened in our game...

This is another game I could theoretically see myself getting tired of, but I think the slow change of the locations is paced just about perfectly for me. And Alexandra likes it a lot, too, which means I can get it played at home (always a plus!)
