I have been struggling for years to trim my game collection, with an ultimate goal of 500 games. While I have trimmed a lot of "fat", that goal of 500 games continues to prove elusive. So many enticing new games are released each year, and I get dozens and dozens of review copies as well. This means I am constantly parting games in a vain attempt to maintain the status quo. I guess there are worse problems to have.

This list reflects over a dozen games that I haven't played in years, but remember enjoying at some point. My goal is to play them over the course of the next year and make a determination: does it stay or does it go?

Your comments are most welcome, as are your list of games that are on the bubble.

An earlier Stefan Feld design and part of the Alea line of games. I haven't played in probably close to ten years, but I remember it being nasty, regularly pounding the players.

I am still enticed by the time travel theme, and Khronos probably came closest to being the definitive game in the category. However, it could be confusing. It hasn't hit the table in many, many years, so it is time to make a final decision on this.

I am still searching for the ultimate super heroes board game. This early entry into the field was at times good, and at times bland. the last game I played was over 10 years ago and it was so good it forced me to keep the game. Sadly, I haven't played since.

Challenge accepted, Jonathan!

While we're on the topic of purges/collection pruning, here a list of games we have removed from the shelf so far this year. I'll update this list (or post in a future episode) after we do our mid-year purge.

Airships: a very disappointing game received from BGG Secret Santa last year.
Hanabi: we fell out of love with this one—felt a little too samey and Paul disliked the memory aspect of it.
Okiya: after ~30 plays, we were done with this one. Greatly enjoyed the time it spent on the shelf.
Onirim (second edition): I've been getting rid of all my solo games after realizing that if I want to play a solo game, I'd rather play a video game.
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1: Sort of...we (rage quit) finished playing it and repurposed the cubes in Dilluvia Project and will be using the box for a double-box foam core insert storage for Clash of Cultures + Civilizations.
Sheriff of Nottingham: another BGG Secret Santa gift.
Star Wars: Armada: this was Paul's game and he has a long story of getting into his first minis game and getting out of it.
Ticket to Ride+1910: We don't need a ton of TTR in our lives, so we kept our favorite (Europe) and got rid of the rest.
Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia
Tiny Epic Kingdoms: we were completely underwhelmed with this one and got rid of it after a couple plays.
VivaJava: The Coffee Game: The Dice Game: we enjoyed our plays of this, but in the end we enjoy other games in this genre more.

Update #1
We went through the shelf last night in our initial reevaluation and 3 more games are leaving the shelf with 2 undecided:

Card City: We recently Kickstarted the new XL version, so there's no need to keep the original one around.
Flick 'em Up!: We still enjoy this one, but the opportunities for playing it after moving are slim-to-none. The leaves in our current table are not quite flush enough for smooth flicking, which means we would have to take it somewhere to play, and we don't really have the group for it anymore. The first few scenarios are fine, but the later ones with more mechanics seem to outstay their welcome. And as a 2-player? I'd rather play something like X-Wing.
Takenoko: This is a great game! There is nothing wrong with it. And so pretty! But we noticed going through the shelf that we probably have more gateway-weight games than we need for the amount of times we play them, and this one just didn't make the cut.
Qwirkle: This one is mostly Paul's game. He enjoys it, but I find it difficult to hit the table every year.
Labyrinth: Our childhood/nostalgic game. It is a fun puzzle and certainly unique on our shelf. But does it still bring us joy? We haven't decided yet.

We'll be making another run through the shelf to edit ratings, reevaluate the gateway-level games, and finish plays of the 15-ish games that haven't hit the table yet this year.

In other news: Recent Acquisitions!
I couldn't pass up the Amazon Prime Day Glitch and picked up Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – The Force Awakens Core Set and Kingdomino for $6.10. Total. Shipped. WOOHOO!

Update #2
Thanks to Daniel's suggestion, we are thanking Labyrinth and Qwirkle for their service and saying goodbye. We also evaluated some of the other games on the gateway-weight list that just aren't getting played and are considering adding the following list to the cull:

Amerigo: We have yet to play this with more than 2 players and there are plenty of other copies around if we want to request a play.
Lotus: This is a beautiful, fun game, but out of all the other hand management games on the shelf, this one didn't quite make the cut.

On the Fence, Please Help!:
Lords of Waterdeep: It pains me a bit to see this one on this list, but the fact of the matter is that we struggle to get it to the table once a year, it isn't great with 2, and we rarely have an opportunity to play it with the Skullport expansion, which is the best part. We took it to a local game night last night, mentioned we were thinking about culling it, and heard, "gasp! really???" before setting up a different game anyway. shake
Tobago/Ticket to Ride: Europe: Paul and I are split on this one. These are both so different, but for the amount of time we actually play each of them, we could do with only 1. I prefer Tobago, as I enjoy its uniqueness and crazy good production. Paul prefers TTR, as he has more fun with it and it is an easier gateway game to teach. We may keep both for now.

OK, here's the list of what I sent to the local used game sale this year.

That's Life!
Russian Railroads - knowing the pace of our life, I didn't think there was a reason to keep both this and First Class. I chose the latter.
Evolution
Two by Two
Stack Market - never even played it.
Escape: The Curse of the Temple
Too Many Cinderellas - I feel bad since I'd just asked my SS for it this past year, but it went over like a lead balloon when we played it.
Welcome to the Dungeon
Quarantine
1960: The Making of the President - this was the hardest choice. I love this game, but I had to be honest with myself that it is highly unlikely to be played more than once every 5 years at most.
The Oregon Trail Card Game
Tides of Time
Wakanda
Dominant Species: The Card Game - another tough choice, as there was a time we really enjoyed this one. But when dusting it off recently, all the fun seemed to be gone.
Apples to Apples + 2 expansions
Settlers of Catan - it was time.
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot + 4 expansions
Joking Hazard

And yes, the correct reaction to several of these would be, "You OWNED that?!"

Recent Plays: 7/9–7/14

Orléans: Invasion: The coop is hard!!! We've been enjoying the challenge though and looking forward to trying some of the other modules from the expansion.
Suburbia: My #1 game! Love this so much! Tiles in the mix were pretty different than recent games, which was a nice challenge. I managed the win with San Francisco (huge airport by the bay, apartments and condos on the beach). Also: loads of airports this game!
Five Tribes: Love this game so much with 2! All the mountains/sinkhole from the expansion ended up in a single row, which split the board in half, making for some interesting decisions. Paul got the win with lots of camel and djinn points.
Morels: I didn't quite pick up enough pans early on and Paul won with the Morels.
Kingdomino x4: We got this in the recent Amazon Prime Glitch and were eager to try it. We started with 2 rounds of the basic rules for 2, followed by our new preferred way to play: all variants + 7x7! Really great as a little 2-player game. We tried it with 3 at a local meetup and it definitely wasn't as good. Looking forward to trying it with 4.
Millennium Blades: Always a good time! And always crazy! I got the cool Exaltius card (100 RP for having 1 of every type and element) for an epic 2nd tournament win, but got shut down in the final tournament with crazy discards. Actually, everyone was ruining everyone's plans in that last tournament. The store deck was quite nasty this game, which made for some fun combos.
Lorenzo il Magnifico: Got to try this one last night for the first time. There was one player with a bit of AP (potentially new to this kind of euro), so it took a little longer than anticipated. It was fun and I'd play it again, but I worry whether or not more than 1 round of terrible rolls would be too punishing. We had one round of 1-1-2 and it was absolutely brutal.
