So many games, so little time. There are so many games that I wanted to play and some of them have been outstanding for play for 9 or 10 years long. A recent example as such is the widely acclaimed Band of Brothers system. One would only be able to play the series games in a row to learn the crusts of the system. I have to stay focus with my wargaming goals and hence the schedule lists all the years. For the 17th consecutive times, I compiled this list to keep my chart on course. An outlook for the games to play in 2018:

Ancient: I haven't done much in this period in 2017 except for Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar which transfix my reverence toward Caesar and his campaigns in Gauls. On the other hand, I still have a lot to finish in the reading of Sabin's many excellent books and designs regarding the period. The many big names in the military history come from the ancient that I wish to explore more other than the GBoH series. Plus, the re-release of Simple Great Battles of Ancient rulebook and scenarios fuels my desire to the next high.

Napoleonic: I have a good time in 2016 and 2017 with the Napoleonic, mainly at strategic scale of operations like Napoleonic War and Invasion of Russia. But the Waterloo 1812: Fallen Eagles captivates me the most with the battle and I read a lot about it to coincide my gaming experiences. The time of Napoleonic remains a favorite period among many although myself not particularly fond of the Napoleonic tactics and his time. Command for the period is too difficult to simulate effectively without layers or rules, as suggested by the La Bataille series. Perhaps I will play a lot less in 2018 so that I can allocate more time to the ancient period. But the new game Austerlitz 1805: Rising Eagles is one that I would very much love to continue with the system.

American Civil War: It has been the least popular period in Hong Kong and I didn't play a game on it in 2016 or 2017. It is very difficult to find opponents here for face-to-face games, although I am well-versed in some of the greatest battles on earth through reading of magazine history along the years with subscriptions. But with the state-of-the-art Vassal technology, it is easy to find opponents in the U.S. via PBeM games. I should plan some games for the period as I have several books to read on the history of the Civil War.

WWI: My interest in the period dwindles in 2017. But in fact, my urge to play the French Le Temps des As II excellent game design remains fiery. I am a fan of this beautiful and elegant system, removing the fear elements of usual complex gameplay for the war in the air. For some reason, I wish to go back to Clash of Giants II for some campaign level experience since Marne. In fact, Somme 1918 marks the Centennial of the terrible climax before the end of the war.

WWII: I have a great time with WWII at tactical level in the past two to three years. But actually there are many WWII games at strategic level churning out in the year that I haven't found the time to play. I wish to focus more on the strategic level in 2018 as a result, including Triumph & Tragedy, Unconditional Surrender! World War 2 in Europe, A World at War, Gathering Storm, War of the Suns as well as the upcoming Blitz! A World in Conflict, etc. But how can I find the time to read all the rulebooks? The problems for these games are that they are huge and it is difficult to gather the number of people who would be interested in the game at the same time. But I will try.

Modern: I have had many gameplays in 2016 and 2017 and so this should be a period which I would slow down like the Napoleonics. Urban Operations might get some more plays in 2017 and 18, given its dynamic and realistic tactics simulation in urban environment. But there will always be something from the Vietnam War that I wish to dive in after my COIN game experience with Fire in the Lake.

Si-fi: Yes, I have an affection with the Star Fleet Universe and BattleTech. Any new products from the two series always caught my eyeball. With the re-release of many materials from Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. via eBook on the internet in recent years, I can take the advantage to collect them back instead of paying the hefty shipping charges. Well, you don't have the diecut counters but reading them is still a lot of fun. I have several games from the Federation & Empire and Federation Commander. I am learning the system of the latter with Federation Commander: Romulan Border. Things are looking pretty on this front. I should spend some efforts in learning the universe. For BattleTech, I am ready to dive in whatever scenarios or sourcebook materials as I am really looking forward to the year in which the new PC game will be released. Besides, I wish to continue my campaign experience with Victory by Any Means Campaign Guide (Second Edition) in 2018.

You can check out my previous lists here: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/lists/user/Lawrence%20Hun... before you read on.

David and I have been talking for a FTF game for so long. This is an easy entry to block system. Since David comes from England, it is natural that he would like to play this. This is a very entertaining wargame and I have played it several times, many of them are PBeM. A FTF game will certainly bring another level of enjoyment, especially when I lost heavily FTF when I played it against another David from Australia! Only then had I realized how cool this game it is.

AAR:
Although I don't know much about the history of the English Civil War, the bloody struggle between the House of Lancaster and the House of York has been widely told in many TV series and/ or movies. The Avalon Hill's game "Kingmaker" is also a classic wargame on the subject which I played the PC translation of the boardgame with a lot of fun memories - the cornering of the royal family and the maneuvering breakouts back and forth between the two Houses. This pastime memories are still carried to these days and thus a game of Richard III would bring me back to the period again.

Ain't the map awesome looking? The pasture green dotted with noble heralds - they call you to game on it every time I look at them. Being a head of the house, the King or the Pretender, both sides maneuver blocks of units on the map to find the "right" places to fight. By "right" places, I mean if your forces are defending on the "home turf", the area of your noble jurisdictions with its herald on, or crown for the King or his heir, you will know the places better and have +1 firepower, thus easier to hit the enemy.

I hope I can recover soon from my broken arm and play this game with both David and Andrzej! This game has been long on my waiting list to play. I haven't played A House Divided by GDW yet, which is a classic on the American Civil War, with similar "point-and-link" movement system. Price of Freedom should be a welcome introduction back to the basic wargame design which can be both fun and realistic at the same time, and in preparation of my take in A House Divided!

Anthony is a master strategist. This classic point-to-point movement game from GMT is one that gets to be played, as it covers the whole WWII on the European theatre. I was disappointed by the "Engulf" series with blocks. But I am hopeful with Barbarossa to Berlin, based on my experience with Path of Glory of course.

My God! 2018 is the Centennial Anniversary of this battle, the Battle of Somme, which was part of the German Spring Offensive in 1918. Eventually this is the one last Big Push for the German to salvage good terms before ceasefire on the horizon. The offensives took place on 21 March and 21 August (6 months apart) and the two offensives caused a total casualties of more than 500,000.

Scott is looking to play some of the classic Avalon Hill game and this is the one I long to play since its release. Perfect to find an opponent stil today to play the older, but more juicy wargame. It requires some time to read the rulebook before setting up the game. The game is known for its tactical level modern jet fighting with an operational angle. The box cover is one of the coolest in the history of wargaming.

A las Barricadas started it all, spawning the platoon level combat Winter Storm series. With both games of Paths to Hell and La Bataille de France under my belt, I am getting more familiarized with the rules, which are quite confusing with interchangeable terms at times. However, the gameplay is fairly straight-forward actually and the tactical experiences at platoon level is never so immersive before. I am sure the system will grow and eventually cover THE game on the city fighting of Stalingrad, where the system would really shine. Let me see if Stephen would be up to another game with me, practicing even more tactics unique to the platoon level operations.

Marking Anthony to this another strategic treatment, though this time is the less popular American Civil War (well, it is less popular in Asia at least). I have read a lot of stories about the war at many levels and on many accounts already. Thus I am always looking to play the old VG's American Civil War. I didn't have a chance to do so and this one by Mark Simonitch came. Would I miss it the second time? Will this make the VG game obsolete? I hope I can play both GMT and VG games forever.

After the game of Fortress Sevastopol, I hope Christian can teach me the game of Up Front, which is one of his top ten game ever. As he knows the quite well, I hope I can get the gist and juicy part of the system and get the feel of ASL without the hard work but with cards! I am not a fan of ASL, ASLSK or Combat Commander all that tactical gaming system while so many clinging onto them. But Up Front is an exception to me in which I can find the fun of tactical level gaming.

Anthony and I both are interested in this monster on the Chinese theatre of operations during WWII. The only grand strategic-operational level wargame on the subject, War of the Suns brings fresh perspective to the subject with extensive research and new insights. The conventional mechanics used by the designer balance out an otherwise complex and diverse operations (e.g. inter-cliche conflict on command, communist insurgents and opium trade operations, etc.)

The game Fallen Eagles opens up a whole new field of study on Napoleonic warfare at operational level. Perhaps quite unsuspectingly by many, the system approaches the subject in a very refreshing angle and scope. Rising Eagles (on battle of Austerlitz), and as of this writing, Last Eagles (on battle of Ligny) have been released as follow-on to this highly successful and acclaimed system. No longer study on Napoleonic a tedious process, the series offers plenty fruitful wisdom and insights in simulation of the 19th century warfare.

I have the physical copy of the game since its KS campaign. Seems that I can't find anyone interested in playing this at the club. I am surprise there is a module of it in Tabletop Simulation the PC sandbox engine, in fact virtualising all kinds of tabletop games. I suspect I will go into the D&D RPG world eventually with the engine sooner or later. But first, I have to find the time to play Battle For Souls in either table!

This is a game particularly PBeM-friendly due to its structured command, movement and combat system. There are a lot of scenarios to choose from and I am pretty sure we are going to get into all of them eventually, while absorbing all the changes and developments of cold weapon warfare in the ancient. While GBoH series is very much a chess-like system to me, I can find the gore, blood and toughness in Lost Battles that are more matching to my perceptions about ancient battles. Maybe Angus would be interested in a game with me.

Definitely a design-for-effect game, oddly abstracted but the results are undeniably simulative. The abstractions will certainly turn off some people. I personally liked the innovative design.

Scheduled to play: ??, 2018
I have KS the game but I don't have a chance to play it with anyone in the club. I have already purchased the iOS version to play the game and so it is the time to play the game before it sinks into storage on the shelf or warehouse before long. I have to find someone to play!
