ABOUT GCL mb GELATO DIVISION mb Subscription Thread

What is a Game Chat League?

A Game Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

*** up next!

Unless you are a complete and utter slob, or are wealthy enough to outsource all of your household chores, it's a safe bet you do some sort of housework. And as a kid, you might have been obliged to perform certain tasks before your parents would let you out, as The Coasters sing in "Yakety Yak."

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor
You ain't gonna rock and roll no more
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Just finish cleanin' up your room
Let's see that duck fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

You just put on your coat and hat
And walk yourself to the laundromat
And when you finish doin' that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip, he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain't got time to take a ride
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

We should first gauge where people are. So - are you a neat freak? An utter slob? Or somewhere in between? (Feel free to treat this as a mental exercise if you would rather not share in this forum... I promise, failure to post on this list will not result in the rest of us secretly judging you. Seriously. Honestly.)

One of the sources of household friction is who does what around the house. A 2014 US Bureau of Labor Statistics survey found that 43% of men did some food preparation or cleaning up after cooking on a given day; 70% of women did. For other housekeeping tasks (cleaning, laundry, etc), it was 20% of men and 50% of women. This doesn't get into how much TIME on a given day was spent on this - I'd bet a significant proportion of the men's work was nothing more than taking out the trash or loading the dishwasher after somebody spent an hour making a nice dinner.

How does this work chez vous? Equitable split? Or does the guy sit around all day playing games while the women of the house clean up after working a 40 hour week outside the house?

And/or how was it in your family when you were a kid? Assigned chores?

In your country or part of the US or place where you formerly lived, any particular social expectations for this? Are expectations/roles changing?

The thing about having a house* with things is you sometimes have to clean, sort, or otherwise care for them.

What household** chore do you dislike the most? And no, despite what The Onion says, straining bong water through coffee filters does not usually count as a chore.

*or apartment; the scale may differ and perhaps no yardwork, but the basics still apply unless you like going through life with dirty laundry and pancaked cats in piles of decomposing garbage in the corner of what used to be the living room but now is known as Trash Heaps #4-17

**Or yardwork. Your pick.

Flip the question. Is there a particular household chore you ENJOY? Or at least, don't mind?

For purposes of this question, don't count cooking. If you enjoy it, it's not a chore - so I won't count it, since I do like to cook.

Ok, this is a tangent - but have you watched any of the TV show called Hoarders, where every episode features two different people with horrible messes in their house dealing with family members and professionals to try to clean it up? What's your reaction?

If you've never heard of this... interesting. Many American cities now have hoarding task forces to try to deal with people with houses that are so messy as to be dangerous.

For those housework/yardwork tasks you really don't like, do you have any strategies for coping with them - making them more pleasant, or at least less unpleasant?

Bob brought a pre-release copy of Immortals he'd picked up at a convention, so he, Ted, and I gave it a try on Saturday. It's a big-box number from Queen. Basically, it's like Wallenstein goes to Fantasy Land. Same combat resolution bit, with cubes going into the Tower of Random Death including green 'neutrals' that may or may not resist you, depending on what's going on.

But with twists. For a start, there are Light and Dark realms - same exact geography but on two maps, and the dudes you lose in one realm re-appear in the other. It's an interesting twist, and as Ted noted, it makes a good edge position less certain since with the construction of portals, you can move from one realm to the same spot in the OTHER realm - death from above, or below.

Anyway - it was a lot of fun. I may have to pick this up when it's released.

N/A   Timebomb x6 - We had played Timebomb 2 before with the kids, so they really took to this one. I can now see why they made Timebomb 2. There's not very much room to maneuver here, especially as a terrorist.

N/A   DEJA-VU x4 - This is a really great game. It just takes a few minutes and it is a pretty challenging memory exercise.

N/A   Fugitive x4 NEW! - Tim Fowers has a pretty good track record with me. I like how he self publishes everything. All of his games are pretty unique and this is a cool little game in a very neat package with great artwork.

N/A   Fuji Flush x4 - Another family favorite, though it can be frustrating as there is a huge amount of luck involved and I'm pretty convinced that your fate is based on your initial card draw.

7   Oh Hell! x3 - I was surprised at how poorly I did in these games. This is one we played a lot growing up and I think of myself as an experienced player but I did terribly.

N/A   Bad Bunnies x2 NEW! - This game has terrible ratings, but it's actually kind of fun to play with our kids. Another one where it seems like your fate is dealt to you and there's no way out, but I could be wrong.

7   Relationship Tightrope x2 - We taught this to my in-laws, who struggled to understand, though the kids took to it instantly.

 6   Coloretto

7   Merchants - It was a lot of fun to see the light bulb click on for everyone, including my wife. The way I taught it was probably not thorough enough, but it's great to see them probe and discover.

 8   Pickomino

 7   Robot Master

7   Simply Catan - Still enjoying playing this with my kids, it's fun to see them learn to grasp the different strategies on their own.

 N/A   Tichu

This last week we traveled to Northern California to spend time with my wife's parents. We also visited the redwoods, which was amazing. We did some really great hikes. The kids are real troopers, some of them were quite challenging - the last one was 10 miles and even the youngest kept up. It was also refreshing to be in a place that wasn't hot. I actually had to put on a jacket at least once.

x1 [Playtesting]

Welp, it was a lovely week here in Fort Wayne. Things are settling down. I have (finally) a defense date for my dissertation, and there are some fun things in the works. Hopefully next week will be my last week of writing and editing till after the defense!

The games this week were likewise lovely. Sol made it to the table twice (with 3 and with 4). I managed an online game of 1889 with some new players who are getting better. I still eeked out a win but it was a close run thing. I also did some playtesting on a couple of upcoming projects that are both exciting and bewildering.

The highlight of the week was a game of Vast which I taught to my brother and his friends. It had been a few months since I played, so it took me awhile to get back in the swing of things. I took the Goblins to smooth out the explanation and everyone had a good time. Vast does so many things that I adore, but think it really demands a group that can play it several times in close succession. I'm hoping I've got such a group with my brother and his friends. We'll see if I can get it back on the table next week.

In 18xx news, I think I'm ready to dust off 1830 with my Fort Wayne train gamers. With any luck we can give it a lot of play in the second half of summer.

Game Week

8   Dungeons & Dragons: Temple of Elemental Evil Board Game
 8   1851
 10   18CZ
 10   1826
 10   Advanced Squad Leader

Our Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System Board Games campaign continues. We now have four scenarios left to play and until now, we have won every single one. Some where close, but most of them felt like a cakewalk. So if we're going to play that campaign again, we'll have to think about something to make the scenarios a little more difficult.

A PbM game of 1851: Kentucky & Tennessee ended and we immediately started another one. This is a small 18xx, with only six companies, perfect for three players.

Friday was train gaming night, and we played a game of 18CZ and then 1826: Railroading in France and Belgium from 1826. I haven't played that one in a long time, and it was a little strange, as the 2-trains seemed to run forever. As I owned two companies with two 2-trains each, I had such a headstart that nobody was able to catch me. I won pretty easily! I blame the others for not forcing the train rush! And I really enjoyed winning an 18xx game with Lonny on the table meeple

A user here on the Geek looked for opponents for heavier games, and I invited him for Sunday afternoon to a game of Advanced Squad Leader and a little BBQ. It was a very nice Sunday - we played scenario S1 from the Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #1 and Cris did very well, controlling US Paratroopers who had to defend a small village against the Germans. He did well, but in the end, my Jerries managed to grab the key buildings and I won. I hope this was not our last playing - Cris is a really nice guy, I'd love to play with him again!

I hope you all had a great week too! meeple

This is the week that was:

 10   Twilight Struggle w Bottos
Yup. One game. A rematch of our ongoing Playdek TS games.

What's going on:
New games: Recently arrived are 1960: The Making of the President and Time of Crisis from GMT.

Math Trade: I traded Food Chain Magnate for Scythe+Scythe: Invaders from Afar in a local math trade (pick up and deivery happening soon)

Anniversary: My wife and I had our anniversary on Thursday, and we went out to our favourite go to French place where a fabulous dinner was had by all.

Vancouver Folk Music Festival: This year was the 40th annual VFMF and there were a lot of good bands, but the highlight for me was seeing the Barenaked Ladies on Saturday night on the main stage. Lots of sun, good food, and great music.

Every year I find a new band I like, and this year it was an outfit called Jonah Blacksmith from Denmark.

This week: My gals are away this week at a fiddle camp, so I'm of course bachelor boy with a busy week ahead. Gaming tomorrow, seeing a baseball game Tuesday with a friend, dinner with Rob Wednesday, hosting the TNC Thursday, and Friday sleeping it all off.

It's summer time. Life is good.

This game is growing on me. It's quick, it's difficult, and like rolling japan or take it easy, you end up ruing early you. But early you doesn't care. That's a problem for later you! Megan did much better on the first card, we tied on two and three, but I pulled ahead with unused tokens and secret goals (blue for the win!)

Automobiles w/Racing Season 2p ww x1

Like Jojo in his Chariot race,
or Ben-Hur in a sim'lar place
This shit gets bonkers once you put
a driver in the seat - Kaput!
--
Oh man. Drivers are of the if-everyone-is-broken-no-one-is design school. They feel like gods in T'G'Zimbabwe. I don't know how much I like them yet, as we played on an insane 2p map where one player clearly had the best power, but perhaps I also played wrong.

Valley of the Kings: Last Rites 2p ww x1

Like Denzel said, king kong comes short
but king tut's people often thwart
my plans for tomb resplenderizing
(I want my lair to be mesmerizing)
--
This is the chudykian third installment. Twice in the MIDGAME we had full pyramid wipes, Megan began her last turn with 11 cards, it was insanity. I like it. Megan feels like it may have gotten a bit out of hand.

 8   Roll for the Galaxy
 N/A   Captains of Industry

GAMING
Not a lot of gaming, again thank goodness for Monday night or there'd be no gaming at all. Back to our smaller 4-5 person group for the night, and that was nice.

Captains of Industry is always amusing to us. Not for the gameplay, but because one of our gamers always confuses it with something else that he *really* didn't like, so it's an ongoing "this game that is this game you like and not that game that you don't" and then when it's over we always say, "we should play this more often to get the rhythm of it", and then we don't. At least we're consistent.

And Roll for the Galaxy is always a hit for me.

CON PREP
Two weeks from tomorrow! We are ahead on some things, like program book and badges to print, checking supplies, thinking about signage onsite, so that's awesome. I'm a little nervous about the t'shirts (there have been issues), but I trust the folks to make it right.

We got new postcards for the gaming con, HexaCon, yay! Looking forward to seeing how many people get excited about our new con.

EUROPE TRIP
Ermagerd, so excited! It's occurred to me that it'll be not at hot there as it has been here (highs in mid 30's here, low to mid 20's there), so I've resigned myself to having to take a pair of heavier shoes and socks (I was looking forward to all sandals, all the time). Got a pair of compression socks the other day and wow, those are amazing.

Next week I'll start assigning clothing to the international travel pile and to the convention pile. I'm planning on not having overlapping items, so I can have the Europe bag ready to go immediately after the con.

LIFE IN GENERAL
Overall, good. My world seems to be getting a little more organized, which makes me happy. Billy and I continue to work well together, and have all sorts of interesting ideas on new projects, lol. Dating other people is slow going, but our lives are kind of busy, heh, so I can see how it would be hard to see yourself in that picture.

SdJ
Congrats to the SdJ winners! We enjoyed playing those games at BGG Spring.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Only boardgame I played last week. Great with the right crowd. Without the right crowd, only me and my wife laughs.
Spent the week at my brother´s house and we did various stuff.

Also played the annual "Brother vs. Brother Matchplay" at the golfcourse near my brothers place. I dominated the event and took home the title for the second year running. With borrowed clubs and without touching any golfclubs since last summer, I was quite surprised, but happy.

Ordered Flamme Rouge that is sceduled to arrive today.

EDIT: I bought Robot Turtles as it looked cool. Helps with programming skills too for young kids.
