I was talking with my wife on the way to the rec center a few days ago. We happened to be talking about incentives for weight loss (other than the obvious ones like 'feeling better' and 'living longer')

Out of the blue she says, "If you can lose 100 pounds by next year, we will plan a trip to BGG CON 2018."

surprise

Now, first of all, this deal has a little more heft (!) than you might think at first glance. My wife has the REAL job in the family. Remember, I design games for a living. Second of all, the last time I rode on a plane I had to pay for two seats. Yep, they actually used a tape measure on me in the line. You'd think the shame and humiliation of that would have been enough to inspire me to drop some pounds. But nope. I just stopped using air travel. Anyway, the point is that after 100 pounds I could once again travel on an airplane like a normal person. Texas is just too far a drive from Virginia.

I thought a fun way to do this would be to create a BGG list. I'll start by posting the game ranked at my current weight, 388 lbs. Then every week I will do the same, hopefully getting down to the 288th ranked game by July 24, 2018. That's my goal. Of course, I also risk public shame and humiliation should I fail But that's a risk I'm willing to take. I know my sweetheart wants more for me than just another trip to another game convention. She wants me by her side for as many years as possible. I love you, Suzie kiss I hope I can do this for you. And for me.

Besides, I've never been to BGG CON

I was hoping the first entry would be a game that I'd played. Ah well. I know a friend who owns it. That will have to do.

388 lbs. *sigh* Long road ahead!

(But I'm at 386 lbs. See edit #2 below)

I've played Space Hulk once, with my main gaming bro, Brad Fuller. Can't say it was a favorite, but it sure was pretty.

As you can see, I lost four two pounds in my first week. Thanks, in large part, to the comments here, I have been very motivated to stay on track (this week).

According to my weight, height and activity level (presently sedentary) my body burns off appx 3600 calories a day. So if I want to lose 2 pounds a week (7000 calories), I need to consume 2600 calories or less per day. I've been finding that very easy to do. I have barely suffered at all. Of course, it comes with eating the right foods (like game rules, some foods don't "carry their weight", so to speak).

I spent the weekend in Richmond, at Gulf Games. If you can believe it, I went to McDonalds 2x, Wendys 2x, Cookout 1x, Panera's 1x and Longhorn Steakhouse 1x. And I maintained my food goals. Count calories, don't go crazy, and exercise and it can work. I swam in the pool. We did walking laps in the hotel hallways. And I sat on my butt for many hours playing games. Good times.

Side question: What the heck does one do with Geekgold? I mean, if you've got the avatar and the fancy trappings that go with it. I seem to have accumulated an abundance of it (thanks!) I'm thinking I might give it away or raffle it off somehow. But then what would THOSE people do with it?

See you next week. NO MCDONALDS this week! I only use them for breakfast anyway (two egg mcmuffins = 600 calories. OMG MMMM...)

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to add, I started using MY FITNESS PAL for counting calories. Pretty neat website/app. I recommend it. And it's free.

Edit #2: CORRECTION! I am at 386. I weighed 384 on my home scale but the rec center is the OFFICIAL weight. Oddly enough, Tyrants of the Underdark raised two spots this week to ... 386. So I'll just leave the post as is. I will be patient next week and post correctly.

I played this once. But I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan and the text on the cards was TINY. Sadly, it did not get another play.

Well, this was a good week. Lost six pounds (!). And this was an official six on the rec center scale. Just been trying to keep to ~2600 calories per day. Even celebrated a birthday party at game day with turkey burgers and sugar-free cake.

380 is the weight I've been hovering around for the last 7 or so years. So I still feel like I'm just starting out. But I'm feeling good.

See you next week!

Schotten Totten is a wonderful two-player game that I've played many times. Sadly, it is not a favorite of my wife's so it doesn't get played much these days.

Well, I'm down to 378. Kind of a letdown after last week's 6-lb drop But this is the pace I've set for myself and I'm satisfied. This is a full 10 lbs since I started three weeks ago. I've gotten into a routine with my food intake, and my wife and I still go swimming/water-treading about five times a week. We also do nightly walks around the block - about 1000 steps according to my Fit Bit. It's about as far as I can walk at one time without my sciatica kicking in.

I've gotten into the bad habit of stepping on the scale every day. It can really affect my mood if I don't see a number I want to see. And I know frustration is one of the best ways to wreck a diet. My wife says I should concentrate on other aspects, like how my clothes are fitting. I took a shirt out of the closet yesterday that used to be super tight on me. I tried it on and now it's just tight. My summer shorts feel like they've got a little more roomy since I started, but that might just be my imagination, considering I've only lost about 2.5% of my total body weight since I started.

That's it for this week. I wish I had something more exciting to write. Maybe successful weight loss is supposed to be slow and boring. See ya!

What? Schotten Totten again? Hah. I didn't anticipate that some games might creep up the BGG rankings as slowly as my weight is creeping down.

Hmph. Only one pound this week. Frustrating, since I haven't changed my habits since starting the diet. I haven't consumed more than 2600 calories per day in a month. I guess I might need to lower my calorie intake and increase my activity.

Ah well, at least it's moving in the right direction. Carry on.

Yea, can you believe it? Am I really at 380 this week? Did I really gain three pounds? Frustrated. Angry.

Okay, I get it -- and I don't need to be talked down off the ledge. The body is a complex machine, the scale doesn't tell the whole story, how do my clothes feel, etc...

I can say in all honesty that I have not stepped off the food path since I started. If you can trust the various "metabolism calculators" they all say that a 51-year-old, 6'1'', 380 pounds man living a sedentary lifestyle should be burning ~3600 calories a day minimum. And I've kept all of my daily calories at or below 2500 calories. So yes, I'm doing the math correctly. I'm just starting to wonder if the formula is correct.

I started a modest lifting regimen. 30m/3x a week. It's not a lot but I'm hoping it will boost my metabolism a little. But really, it feels like 2600 calories/day should do it. Not sure why I'm stuck. Did I really plateau just two weeks into this thing?

Anyway, at this point I'm only sure of one thing. Quitting is not the answer.

See you next week. cool

This is a great two-player game. One of my favorites. I had the original and the deluxe edition -- gifted the latter to a buddy mostly for space-saving reasons. The box was too big and I'm fine with the base game.

Well, it seems I'm back on track. Two pounds last week was pretty good considering there was a game day *and* I went to a Labor Day get-together on Sunday.

Thanks to everyone still hanging in there with me. The last few weeks have been a real bore. Hopefully I can get a few successful weeks in a row. I've been doing this for six weeks and have lost 10 pounds. If my math is right I'm gonna have to pick up the pace slightly if I'm going to make 100 lbs in a year.

Until next week!

Greetings.

Monday morning and I didn't lose an ounce. In fact, the scale says I gained a couple. Pretty frustrating, but I'm okay. I'm not quitting.

I am, however, going to stop posting until I've figured out how to get the scale to cooperate again. Feels dumb coming here every week to announce my lack of progress (well, weight progress, anyway).

I went back to work last week and there was a noticeable difference in the way my work clothes felt. So I feel like some progress is being made. But the whole point of this Geeklist was to track *weight* progress (ie, something quantifiable that could be compared to game rankings).

So, this is not an "I quit" posting. And I didn't want to just stop posting without an explanation (for those of you who are so kind enough to be following the struggle). But the thought of coming here to post "no weight lost" when I KNOW I've been following the rules is a drag. And it's a small form of stress that I can do without.

I'll be back. No worries. I'm still happily in the wagon.

HARRY POTTER: HOGWART'S BATTLE Currently ranked #377

I don't know much about this game. I saw the first movie with my kids. Never saw any of the other movies or read the books. I'm not a Harry guy.

Well, the scale read 377 this morning. Technically that is a loss from last week so I am here. It's nice to be down from last week but it's so annoying that I weighed exactly this amount a MONTH ago. Meanwhile my wife is losing two pounds a week regularly. What a show off.

Being back to work means I have cut down on my strength exercises. I try to go in on the mornings I don't work and it's only about 45 minutes a session.

Still consistently hitting 2600 calories a day. It's easy now. Doesn't even really feel like I'm dieting anymore. If only my body would do it's job like I'm supposed to.

Thanks for the support everyone. It was nice to see all the encouragement for me to post even when I DON'T lose weight. I'm still not sure about that but we'll see.

Here's to next Monday!

Hello. Just a quick note to let everyone know I'm still standing. It has been a few weeks since my last post so I wanted to update.

I have decided to use a more finessed method of calculating food intake. Straight calories isn't doing it, which surprises and irritates me. I know all foods aren't weighted the same but I thought the math would win. Ah well. I have decided to start counting using the weight watchers method. I'm not doing the meetings, just using their points system.

See you next week.

I think I played this game years ago when it came out. I don't think I hated it and I don't think I loved it. Wasn't this a puzzly game where you had to figure out where something was by first figuring out where it wasn't?

...and the needle finally moves. I suspect it had a lot to do with changing from calories to Weight Watcher Points. The food choices weren't radically different, but perhaps just different enough to make a...er...difference. Weight Watchers rewards you for proteins and punishes you for carbs. Oh, and apples and bananas are free, which is a lifesaver when the going gets rough.

Oh, and I got a haircut. Maybe that helped.

Not much else to report. I'm just happy to be moving in the right direction again.

Until next week.

Ranked 371. I'm afraid I don't know anything about this game. Someone please chime in and enlighten us.

Good news as you can see. Shorter than normal update this time because I'm typing on a phone. I'm happy. WW points seem to be doing the trick. Oh and I walked the better part of a mile on Friday to get to a Homecoming foot ball game. Mowed the lawn on Saturday. Hauled/assembled furniture on Sunday. That might've helped.

Until next week.

Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death
(BGG rating #369)

I know nothing about this game. Sounds rather depressing.

After over a month of no movement at all, I'm happy to say the scale smiled up at me this morning. I can't really blame the season for the slowdown - I've suffered long plateaus before. Funny, I told my wife this past weekend:

"All I care about is getting to 369 this week. No matter what."

And I did. After weeks of sort-of-dieting I put my foot down and forced myself to focus on that tiny little goal. It helped.

I figured out a breakfast scheme that works very well for me. Six turkey sausage patties and three hard-boiled eggs. And of course my coffee. That keeps me satiated until my 11:00 lunch break (usually deli turkey slices and pretzels). When I get home at 2:30 I'm by myself for a couple hours and I allow myself my "big meal" of the day (usually some sort of pasta dish). Then when my wife (also dieting) gets home she fixes a very light dinner, which works okay for me since I already had my after-work meal.

Obviously this isn't the perfect plan because it's taken me a month to lose two pounds. BGG Con is looking like it might have to be pushed to 2019. That's cool. I've become fascinated with solitaire games these days and you don't need a con for that.

Until 367!

Hello. No weight lost this month, but I wanted to pop in with an update. Just under six month in and only 19 pounds lost, it seems pretty apparent that 100 pounds total by July is not likely. It's fine. I'm not quitting. Just readjusting my goals.

December was not a difficult month, but I wasn't exactly focused. I don't like to blame the holidays specifically. But I did have the last couple weeks of school off and then another week and a half of SNOW DAYS tacked onto that. We're only just recently thawing out. And it's supposed to snow again Tuesday.

Anyway, I found it less easy to stay on track being at home so much. I'm a homebody as it is. I don't look for reasons to leave, and when I'm snowed in it's that much better because then I don't have to feel guilty about it

However, that means I'm around my food constantly. At work you have to wait for lunch and then wait to come home for dinner. Not so when I'm stuck in the house. I eat when I'm hungry. And sometimes I eat when I'm not. I step on the scale regularly to make sure I'm not doing a complete hatchet job on the results I've worked so far. But I wasn't exactly, you know, wired in.

Leave it to my wife (who got me into this whole mess in the first place) to shake things up and help me get back on track. Last night we went to our first Weight Watcher's meeting. Yep, I'm an official WW now. I'm doing the whole Freestyle plan. Fruits, veggies (including corn!), skinless chicken breasts, fish, and plain, non-fat, unsweetened yogurt now are all freebies. It's less exciting than it sounds. But I do feel motivated again. My weigh-in day is Thursdays. We're planning to do it vigorously until April and then reassess how I feel about it. To be honest, I kinda don't get it. If I know the plan, why do I need the meetings? But who knows. Maybe it's the little change I need to stay focused. Remember, if you change nothing, nothing changes.

(I saw that on a poster today at school).

See ya soon.

Coup BGG ranked # 365

This is a fun, light game that I used to enjoy quite a bit. Not so much into games this light these days, but I admire the design a lot.

Could I *lose* weight *any* slower? I submit that I could not! Damn. Four pounds in over two months. I've been doing the Weight Watcher thing for several weeks now. Not sure Freestyle is working well for me. At the point I started eating three eggs a day because they were "free" I realized I better calm down. I feel like all I eat nowadays is fish, chicken breast and yogurt. I try to sneak fruits and vegetables in when I can but I'm not inspired to eat them consistently.

My wife and I traded a half hour of "swimming" (not-drowning) a day for a half hour of walking and I think that is working out MUCH better. After a half hour of splashing around in the pool I mostly just feel wet. A half hour of walking, though, gets my thighs tingling.

Anyway, thanks for waiting for these posts. With any luck and hard work maybe I'll start writing them more frequently. I can't wait to go weigh in tonight. All my old lady friends are going to be so proud.
