On this very day 6 years ago, I created a profile here on BoardGameGeek after I had discovered the wonderful boardgaming world a couple of weeks earlier. Today, I managed to reach the awesome “magic” milestone of having rated 1000 different games - and at the same time log my 5500th play!

So, here’s a geeklist to celebrate that! I’ve included some various stats (some created by myself, some used from friendlessstats) in order to analyze the data a bit. Feel free to comment - and do go to my profile if you want to read a lot more about the games I’ve rated; I haven’t written comments for every game yet, but there are still a lot.

Note that I don’t count/log/rate any board games that might have been played on the computer/smartphone as I don’t consider that “real” boardgaming (in any case, I haven’t played anything except for a couple of TtR and other minor games on my smartphone and a couple of TM games against bots, as I don’t use all the online play board gaming websites). Also, the 1000 rated games are actual games, i.e. no expansions/promos; including those, the total number of my ratings increases to 1366.

My ratings

It seems that I rate games a bit lower than the average person on the Geek, with an average of 5.71 incl. expansions (even lower without), and the games I own have an average rating of 6.76. That doesn’t mean I don’t love games, because I really do want to play all the time, even if it’s a bad game… And I’ve rated a lot of children’s games as well on my profile; I will probably create an account for my kids later and rate the games according to their preferences.

I seem to enjoy a lot of the same games other users do, as my correlation with the BGG ratings is 0,666 (disturbing devil!)

My top 10 games of all time

Having played 1000 different games, the following games are my favorite 1 %. It was extremely hard to make the list (other than the first handful of games), and some of those at the bottom might shift in and out of the list with those runner-up games or those that only gets an “honorable mention” - but as you might expect, I really like all of these games! If you want to check my reasonings behind these ratings, go check my profile for written comments. As you can see, I’m definitely a eurogamer, but I do enjoy the occasional party game and even a skirmish game like Summoner Wars, which is my guilty pleasure and the odd one out compared to the rest of my top10 or even top25!

1) Agricola
2) Terra Mystica
3) Hansa Teutonica
4) Castles of Burgundy
5) Ra
6) Nations
7) Taluva
8) Summoner Wars
9) Samurai
10) Kemet

Runner-ups: Le Havre, Puerto Rico, El Grande
Honorable mentions: Agricola ACBAS, Ghost Stories, Caylus, 7 Wonders, Goa, Tigris & Euphrates, Belfort, Telestrations, Caverna, Kanban, Terraforming Mars, Galaxy Trucker, ONUW, Brew Crafters, Clash of Cultures, Russian Railroads, Hanabi, Aton, Ave Caesar, Scythe, Eclipse, Souvlaki Wars, Survive Escape from Atlantis

Plays

So, with my 1000th rated game I’ve also logged 5500 plays, but do note that about 90 or so of my rated games don’t have any plays as they haven’t been played after the 27th of July 2011, mainly because they are games I remember from my childhood or games I haven’t played since I registered on BGG (think the classics like Uno, Monopoly, various card games, but also games like Chess and Backgammon). Also, 248 of my 1000 rated games have only been played once, but I’m actually fairly happy with this number, as I thought it was much higher, and because NONE of them have a rating over 7,5 (if they are standalone games, and except for an Escape Room, which is basically a one-play thing) – which means that I generally haven’t been really thrilled by the games I’ve only played once.

The following table shows my total plays for each month – note that it begins with March 2012, but that month contains all games I’ve played from the 27th of July 2011. It’s pretty clear that gaming time has decreased, as was expected with two baby girls (born in ’14 and ’16), but it seems that 2017 will end up being a better year than 2016. Also, February 2016 isn’t a mistake; I didn’t play any games until February 29 (!) when I handed in my Master’s thesis…

5500 plays in 6 years equals just a bit over 2.5 games a day – that’s quite a lot! Of course, since 2016, that number has decreased to 1.7 games, but that’s still a lot more than I could hope for! I’m grateful to have a lot of friends who like to play and an understanding wife…

Plays part II

As you can see in this table, I have had a slight trend to play more different games, and also more new games over the past 6 years. I’m a little surprised that of the 406 logged plays I’ve had in 2017, those have come from 173 games, but that number should decrease as the year goes by and I play a lot of the same games. On the other hand, 25 % of my plays (exactly 100 games) have been games that were new to me; this is a very high proportion compared to the previous couple of years, and I admit that I have played a lot of crappy new games the last couple of weeks in order to reach 1000 today…

Top played games

I have a H-index of 32, meaning I’ve played 32 different games at least 32 times. But just to expand a little further, I’ve listed the 42 games I’ve played at least 30 times. These 42 games, corresponding to 4.2 % of my ratings*, account for 2079 or 37.8 % of all of my plays! So it’s fair to say that I’ve played these games a ton… And, “luckily”, it seems that I really enjoy them as I’ve given them an average rating of 8,1!

It’s not that surprising to see the 5-10 minute game ONUW seizing the top spot (ONUA have taken some of the plays in 2017), but I really love that Agricola is claiming third place as it’s my only 10! 119 plays is not too shabby, even though some of them are solo plays (and I usually NEVER play solo games). The stats for every single year really do tell a lot, as it’s clear that e.g. Dominion, Carcassonne and 7 Wonders got a lot of plays early on and then haven’t gotten as many since (even though I still like the games a lot). But the real crime here is the fact that Puerto Rico, one of my favorite games, have only been played once since 2014…! I swear I will rectify this! On the other hand, my third most favorite game of all time, Hansa Teutonica, is going strong and is the only game on this list that has cracked 10 plays this year.

I’ve rated most of the games higher than the average on BGG, and do remember I even tend to rate low. Most of my top10 (and top20) are featured here. I feel like I need to mention Taluva, as it’s an extremely underrated game in my opinion, and I love playing it, as the stats tell. Kemet, just squeeking into my top10 (after a lot of thought!), misses out as it can only manage 18 plays so far, but with the expansion which fixes some of its problems I can see it getting there over the next couple of years. On the other hand, there are only a couple of “outliers”, namely The Resistance and Unusual Suspects, both of which I don’t like a lot (below 7 in rating). I think ONUW is better than Resistance, and I’ve probably played US a bit too much on too many occasions too close to each other. Of course, nothing is as embarrassing as telling that I’ve played Win, Lose or Banana 12 times… It’s simply such an awfully bad game that I have to show it to everybody…

Oh, and yes, Ticket to Ride is the only game where I log each map separately, i.e. under their expansion map. If I combine all of the maps, I’ve actually played it no less than 141 times – it’s simply the best gateway game, and on top of that I can play it with my wife in 20 minutes.

A couple of other random stats

I’ve played 85 of the games in the top 100 on BGG (this number was actually higher earlier this year), and I like most of them. I suspect I will reach 90, but with new games constantly making it into the top 100 (BGG needs a way to handle this imo), it won’t be easy. Of course, I hope that I will someday have played all the games in the top 100 – maybe that should be my next goal?

My longest streak of consecutive days playing games is 22 days back in Sep-Oct 2013! I didn’t think I had such a long streak, and I’m pretty sure it won’t be trumped, at least not until my girls get older and we’re in a summer cabin for a month in rainy weather. Which, come to think of it, isn’t that far out considering the Danish summer weather…

Two unknown and underrated games

According to my stats, Souvlaki Wars is the game I feel is the most underrated, especially when comparing to how unknown it is; it has just 342 ratings and a geek rating of 5,73 compared to my 8. If you like a short, sort of puzzly game where you have to figure out which ingredients each customer needs each round, check it out. Or if you like what can be an extremely mean game (Souvlaki WARS is an apt name), go check it out.

Mask of Anubis is another game I would encourage you to check out as it’s so different from any other game as it uses VR technology (sort of). My rating is 7 vs. a geek rating of 5,75, so that’s not a huge difference, but only 150 persons have rated it and I’m sure many would love it. Check it (or the new Mask of Moai) out!
