Tasks and Challenges
Over the last few weeks, I have been following a thread that centred on inclusivity in games. It focused on games that included tropes that were not cis (I didn't even know that term before reading that thread) white males. It was recently locked after a wild ride that saw it enter RSP a few times only to be retrieved by Octavian who saw merit in the discussion.
Inclusivity is however a much broader application than that. If you are not sure what sort of things could be covered, have a look at some of the teardowns listed on Meeple Like Us Accessible Gaming Teardowns. I first visited there for colourblindness guides, but they certainly opened my eyes to some of the other things to consider.
We all belong to one minority or other. For me personally, one who belongs to that majority referred to above, I am excluded from many games by my colourblindness and always appreciate it when a designer goes the extra mile to include me. Even when the game is perfectly playable anyway. I also belong to other minorities, but this is the one most relevant to my gaming. And it makes me realise the validity of others when they complain about being excluded.
So when you play a game this month, think about how it impacts on you and others. Do you feel included by its themes and/or representations. How could it be improved?
Personally, we will be continuing our ride along the rails of Ticket To Ride, so I will mainly be commenting on colours as they affect me. But I will also make reference to cover and card art as appropriate.
This will be a difficult topic for many. If you don't wish to contribute that is fine. If you do, please be respectful and remember this is a "what we played" list. Not a discussion thread. And above all, enjoy your gaming.
