Tasks and Challenges

Over the last few weeks, I have been following a thread that centred on inclusivity in games. It focused on games that included tropes that were not cis (I didn't even know that term before reading that thread) white males. It was recently locked after a wild ride that saw it enter RSP a few times only to be retrieved by Octavian who saw merit in the discussion.

Inclusivity is however a much broader application than that. If you are not sure what sort of things could be covered, have a look at some of the teardowns listed on Meeple Like Us Accessible Gaming Teardowns. I first visited there for colourblindness guides, but they certainly opened my eyes to some of the other things to consider.

We all belong to one minority or other. For me personally, one who belongs to that majority referred to above, I am excluded from many games by my colourblindness and always appreciate it when a designer goes the extra mile to include me. Even when the game is perfectly playable anyway. I also belong to other minorities, but this is the one most relevant to my gaming. And it makes me realise the validity of others when they complain about being excluded.

So when you play a game this month, think about how it impacts on you and others. Do you feel included by its themes and/or representations. How could it be improved?

Personally, we will be continuing our ride along the rails of Ticket To Ride, so I will mainly be commenting on colours as they affect me. But I will also make reference to cover and card art as appropriate.

This will be a difficult topic for many. If you don't wish to contribute that is fine. If you do, please be respectful and remember this is a "what we played" list. Not a discussion thread. And above all, enjoy your gaming.

We finally finished our General War campaign. The full game took us almost
exactly seven months to complete.

From gallery of Ryan Witmer
The full battlefield, candy is compensation for my loss

Here's what the final position looked like overall:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

The Gorn Front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

The Gorns were ultimately able to push the Romulans back across the neutral
zone and destroyed all of the battle stations on their border. I took a shot
at one of the starbases, but was unable to destroy it. I never really had a
solid enough line to take a run at Romulus or Remus.

The Federation-Romulan Front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

The Federation also evicted the Romulans from their territory and destroyed
several of the border stations. The bulk of the Federation effort was
directed at the Klingons, so they were never really able to push the fight
over the neutral zone.

The Orion Front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

Sadly, I was not able to bring Orion back into the Federation. The Klingon
starbase at 2211 (the only Coalition base remaining in the Federation) was able
to marshal the forces to keep Orion neutral. Note the Lyran expeditionary
fleet in 2613.

The Klingon Front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

The starbase in 1807 held this whole sector together for the Coalition. I took
several runs at it, but was unable to destroy it. I was able to pick off a
couple of battle stations nearby, the only bases I managed to destroy in
Klingon space.

The Kzinti Front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

I really think this is the one that killed me. I was able to reclaim several
provinces and a few planets, but the capital remained in Coalition hands and
three starbases (one Klingon, two Lyran) survived all my attempts to destroy
them.

The Hydran front:
From gallery of Ryan Witmer

A total loss for me. I snuck the Hydran fleet out to claim a lone province on
the last move, but otherwise this sector was a total victory for the
Coalition.

Final Score:

The final score ended up being 2106.4 for the Coalition, 1618.8 for the
Alliance. This difference (401+) is a decisive victory for the Coalition.

I made a lot of mistakes that I recognize now. The biggest was letting
planets, particularly major planets, go too cheaply. I needed a much bigger
investment in PDUs and a more vigorous defense of the Hydran and Kzinti
capitals.

I also made a lot of poor shipbuilding choices. Now that I have more
experience with the fleets, I have a better idea of how to use them
effectively, especially the super-confusing Hydran fleet. My wife also
recognizes some flaws in her building strategies, so I'm sure whatever I come
up with will be countered.

Battle tactics shifted and changed a lot over the course of the game, and one
thing I really screwed up was my approach to Coalition maulers. I let them
get away with too much for too long, and as I've expressed to my wife, I need
to make her fear putting a mauler on the battle line. I lost way too many
PDUs to those stupid things.

Now that the game is packed up, we already kind of miss it. It was a
fantastic experience and I'm already looking forward to playing again.

Wow I cannot believe it. 70% of the way already.

She is playing tougher - she collected her freight early this game, using a number of passenger cards to steal my freight too. soblue
She also stole my usual strategy of going for all short routes. I tried a few long ones this time. Big mistake.

As for inclusivity, this particular version of TtR gets a BIG tick for colour blind friendly pieces. Not only are the usual symbols present on the cards and board as an aid, they did away with Green and Blue train pieces, replacing them with Purple and White. So the colours are: Red, Black, Yellow (German flag colours), Purple and White. I can happily play with any of the colours with no problems. With the normal set of colours, I need to avoid having red and green in play at the same time. I am disappointed they did not continue with these colours in later games in the series. I'm looking at you Rails & Sails.

Where they do fall down is with the freight tokens. These will make the game pretty much unplayable by those with dexterity issues. We have trouble at times and we are pretty much normal in this regard.

Another thing they missed is that all the travellers are males in suits with suitcases. Where are the fräuleins? I believe they address this in Germany. But what a shame they missed it here. Since they have train cards featuring trains into the late 20th century, if not the 21st, they cannot use the excuse that they (woman travellers) were not period appropriate.

We played our first game tonight.

We found this to be a pleasant trick taking game with some cool and interesting twists. Namely, odd rank cards have special abilities and winning too many tricks ("greedy!") can be your downfall. In fact, sometimes less is more

The artwork on the cards is beautiful.

My wife is not a fan of board games. In fact, she actively roots against my obsession. However, there is a rare game that will connect with her. No game I have ever offered up (and there have been hundreds) has connected with us as much as Legacy. This game is a perfect couples game. We create these family trees of pre-Revolution French aristocrats and we tell stories as we do it. I also downloaded and printed the "names" expansion to give each of our characters French names. Today I had a boy named Maximilian LaPierre who went rogue and married the farmer's daughter out of love. Unfortunately she died during child birth giving birth to twins. Max remarried an heiress to a Prussian library and went on to buy a mansion. The narratives that this game allows players to create are so much fun. My wife had almost all Frenchmen in her family, but had to marry the youngest daughter off to a Spanish artist. We told great stories about how they met and fell in love.
This is a very underrated game. Granted, some of the mechanics seem tacked on and certainly there are some balance issues, but neither of us care if we win this game. It's about the storytelling experience. Also, there are several threads on the Legacy rules forum that offer suggestions for how to tweak the Mansions and Venture actions (which we use). I highly recommend this game for couples, especially with a bottle of wine!

Our winemaking frenzy continues. Twelfth play since we opened the box, a few weeks ago. Still no structures nor social workers but we love the Tuscany board and the Moor Visitors cards.

It was an exciting race, again. In the pre-final turn I made a big move to 23 points, so all I had to do was crawl to the finish, buying 3 points in Summer. She had everything lined up for her jump but stranded at 24. Revenge is probable.

Today I watched Jamey Stegmaiers video about Fields of Arle and I'll try to get that one on the table again in the upcoming month.

I was quite intrigued when I saw this appear last month. I was pretty sure we had a set of dominoes somewhere in the back of some cupboard or other. So I went looking. I found not one, but two sets.
So I printed out the rules gave them a read through and settled down for a teaching game. I wish I hadn't.

(Lowest score wins)

Seriously. This is a great game. Far more to it than meets the eye. And by far the best use I have found for a set of dominoes to date.

To play 2p You need:
The rules (Duh!)
1 set of domino 6's (It doesn't work with nines but you could always strip out the high tiles). You can play up to four handed with two sets.
4 chits per player. We used spare TtR trains.

You each build a tableau. Vertically the pips must be in ascending/descending order. Horizontally it doesn't matter. You score the lowest pips on each vertical run you make. A run may be a single half domino. If you make it all the way from 0 to 6 you get -3. She did this twice. gulp

If you can overlay a domino on two others so that the numbers match, you score -2. She did this twice too. soblue If you can do this to the third level, you score -3 and so on.

There are five face up tiles in the draw. They cost between -1 and 3 chits to buy. If you take from there, the tiles remaining "trickle down" and you draw a new tile into the 3 position. Or you can take from the blind draw pile. If so you take a chit as well. And rotate the face up stack so the -1 cost now cost 3, 3 becomes cost 2 and so on.

I am really going to have to stop going easy on her. I was about to call end of game and she asked for two more turns. So I picked up cards instead.
On her turn she completed a loop which gave her 5 Mandalas!. That almost gave her the game. Longest route saved me.

The box art includes all clearly ethnic Indian characters of various castes and genders. Somewhat stereotyped but fine as far as it goes. But the game is set in 1911 (The tickets are labelled "White Elephant Tour 1911") This was at the height of the British Raj, so technically there should be at least one English person there, and possibly a Gurkha in uniform.

We don't play this often enough as it seems we have to do a quick re-learn of the rules every few months. It still remains a lot of fun, and one that I'm still indebted to this guild for pushing me to buy.

I have a couple of the small expansions but we haven't tried those out yet though.

I received my Kickstarter copy and convinced my wife to play it. I played the original Legend of Zelda, and spent a ton of time playing A Link to the Past (by far one of my favorite game experiences to date). So TEQ was a nostalgia trip for me.

We only played once, and I think there's a solid game there, but I was pretty giddy with feeling like I was in a Zelda game.

At the end of the game my wife liked it, but she said at first she wasn't really into it. She said she didn't see the point, and that it was a "nerd board game". I laughed and asked her what the difference was between a "nerd board game" and any other board game. I also pointed out to her that we're both big nerds (lots of comic book stuff, etc.) Apparently she doesn't like fantasy settings, and that turned her off at first, but in the end she liked the game and will play it again.

We're celebrating our 10 year anniversary in a few weeks and I swear I'm still learning things about her.

We played this once before on International Tabletop day with 4 people, and I just received my copy recently so I wanted to see how it went with 2. It went quick, but there wasn't a lot of tension with the game. We both agreed that 3 or 4 people would be best for the player count.

I do really enjoy the game though and like the push your luck mechanism.

A bit of a story around getting here:
After recently being recommended Star Realms for solitaire play (with the Gambit set), I re-discovered that I had a Star Realms digital account that had the full version unlocked. I think I got it in a Humble Bundle a while back. I started just playing the campaign, and out of the blue a friend challenged me online, so I've been playing that online a lot. I also now own all the digital expansions. So for solo gamers or those interested in trying Star Realms out, I can recommend the digital version.

All this experience made me want to go buy the cardboard version! So I bought just the base set, and taught my wife to play. She really likes the game! We even played it in public; our first gaming-in-public moment!

I'm intending to get the expansions over time.

---

On a side note, there's a board game sale at Mighty Ape (our Amazon equivalent here in New Zealand), and I picked out the games on sale I wanted and ran each of them by her. She was keen on me getting Tokaido and ... Race for the Galaxy!? Let's see how that goes!

We didn't get around to playing games until later in the evening last night so we were looking for something quick and fun. Kingdomino is perfect for nights like that and because of that reason it is becoming a staple of our collection.

The other night my wife played a game against herself... I was completely shocked. She has never once expressed an interest in any kind of solo gaming.

We followed up with a quick play of The Fox in The Forest. This is a fun little trick taking game that we are probably going to be playing a lot over the next month. We love our trick taking games so, if you give us a chance to play one as a 2 player game, we will be all over it.

The art for the different suits looks really nice and the game introduces a unique scoring mechanic where you either want to take very little tricks, or a majority, but anywhere in the middle or too many tricks and you won't get the points you want.

I don't think this will dethrone Arboretum as my favorite little card game but it is still a very fun 2 player game.

Board Game: Herbaceous
Herbaceous made it to the table tonight.

It's an easy to learn, easy to play, card game. A game took us 20 minutes from start to finish. Each card contains a drawing of an herb. On your turn, you must plant two herbs: one in your private garden and one in the community garden. Optionally, at the start of your turn, you can take herbs from your private garden and the community garden and pot them in one of your four containers. Each container has a different requirement: all herbs must be different (wooden planter), or all herbs must be the same (large pot), or herbs must be potted in pairs (small pots), or you can pot any herb (glass jar). A container can only be used once per game.

The artwork is quite attractive and very well done. The artwork really pulls us into the game, making us feel like we're actually working in a garden potting and planting herbs. And the artwork adds, what I would say, is a very serene atmosphere to the game.

We were able to play this twice since it plays so fast and is so easy to set up. The Mrs. is determined to become more competitive and there was great improvement in the second game after she changed up her strategy. I got quite lucky on numerous occasions getting the right cards at the right time. I won both games 54-16 & 82-48.

Great game for two players!

Have I mentioned we don't like this version much. It is usually a ticket fest with both of us ripping through the ticket deck as fast as possible.
Sometimes only one of us gets to do that and for the other it is a slog. Today it was a slog for both of us. Whichever way it goes, it just doesn't feel satisfying.

kiss actually said she wanted to play another game of it immediately to get the bad taste out of her mouth. Wisdom prevailed so we only played the one.

arrrh 138
kiss 92 cry

EDIT:
Actually we did play another game tonight. We had some dinner and moved American Sherlock (Elementary) along a little. We are currently in Season 3. We have Season 4 on the shelf but sadly there is still no ETA for Season 5 here. I know it is being released overseas at the end of the month so hopefully it won't be too much later than that.

As he would say: The games afoot.

This one went the way of a dual ticket fest. We both completed 14 and ran the deck through. She had longest route but in the end it didn't help her:

arrrh 187
kiss 168 cry

But she did feel better about the game.

Play #13. She was smarter than me so I lost in the final turn 32-30, despite I thought I had put everything in motion for a big hit. Unfortunately that didn't work out too well for me.
We love this game more and more!

Sunset over the newly built city

Another one ticked off the shelf of shame. I've played this afew times solo but this was the first time two player. Being based on our nearest city (2 hours away) made this an easy purchase.

It's a nice area control game with a pretty straight forward ruleset that provides for some tricky long term plans or good contingencies.

There are two rounds of four phases. In the first round you are building roads and in the second you are building walls. The phases for each round are very cutely named making them very easy to remember:

A = Align with a Guild
B = Build roads/walls and populate neighbourhoods/towers
C = Count votes
D = Defence

In essence you are placing citizens into the city by building roads then playing a card from your hand which determines how many citizens you can place either side of that road. Each card is only played once so your options dwindle as the game progresses so use them wisely.

Once all roads are built votes are counted - the player with the most citizens in each neighbourhood partitioned by roads get 5 votes (points), second gets 3 and third gets 2. In the 2 player game there are some neutral citizens to make things a bit more competitive.

The Guild you align with each round gives you a one off special power and represent the part the Guilds of London played in financing the walls of Derry which, fact fans, are still effectively owned by the Guilds (through the Honourable The Irish Society).

Round 2 is more of the same but the emphasis is on the walls rather than roads and the towers which provide extra scoring opportunities.

On top of all that you can affect and win the votes for the different factions (dice) involved with the city.

It's definitely a game that reveals itself after a few plays as there is a lot to consider, plan for and react to.

After our first play my wife thought it might be better with more but I think once you have a good idea of what to aim for this will work well with 2.

Although it was a learning game which we don't really count, I won:

soblue - 102

21. Board Game: Caverna: The Cave Farmers [Average Rating:8.03 Overall Rank:27]
Board Game: Caverna: The Cave Farmers
(Cross post from July - where I accidentally entered the August plays!)

Long time since my last post, but since I'm reading a lot here, I should be contributing!

Natalie loves farming games (so do I!), but the brutality of 2p Agricola (and our experience differential) means that we've been limited to At the Gates of Loyang and the occasional game of Agricola. Even though I find Caverna "inferior" (relatively) to Agricola, when Natalie suggested she'd like it as a birthday present, we jumped in!

Five games in and we are enjoying it. I am finding that I am falling into a pattern of building an early green room, the forming a main strategy around it, while developing one or two secondary strategies based on excesses in the accumulation spaces. Natalie has been really focused in having a bigger family, and initially won a few games, but I've won the last two by adventuring heavily and grabbing excesses.

I rate Agricola a 10, would rate Caverna an 8, but think that Caverna is a better fir for Natalie and I right now than Agricola (which I play with my buddy Kris!). The lower pressure and always-available buildings means I can't spring weird, unexpected combos (as I usually do in Agricola), and Natalie doesn't have to try to compete for combos (as she would in Agricola). I definitely want an expansion for Caverna, but that doesn't come out until 2018. Patience...

In any case, I like Rosenberg games and farming games so much that I'd still rather play Caverna than many other games. Natalie would tend to agree!

My wife really enjoyed playing this game together, until I pulled an underhanded move of covertly loading up on swords. So, despite the careful crafting of an impeccable strategy, come the end of the game, my bevy of swords lopped 16 points off her killer score. We ended up tying (though I pulled another underhanded move of initially miscalculating 1 extra point in my favor), but she says the very fact that such a travesty could occur after such thoughtful deliberation is abysmal.

Just kidding - while the above events did occur, my lovely wife took it all in stride and we just wrapped up another game. We both enjoy it very much!

*Perhaps, it was because she finally accepted the fact that there can only be ONE Viceroy!!!

Bought this game couple weeks earlier because I really liked the app and I must say that we are thrilled about this game! It's really great and fast and really enjoyable. I like when games have some 'weird' components and that dispenser counts as weird in my book. Already played it 6 and we are looking forward to playing it again. Does anybody know when the expansion is coming out?

Near and Far is just amazing. We enjoy our time with it.
It's almost relaxing to play this game, because it's not hard to understand and you don't have to think so much about developing strategies (atlest the way we play it). We played the 3rd map today and it was the first time I won (even counting the intro map). It was 69-55 point,
but I think I will be crushed in the end. Really recommend this one!

We've got Gloomhaven setup on our big table and been playing it the whole week, but today had a long and tiring day so went for a quick small game on our little table.

We also have Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small – More Buildings Big and Small mixed in.
This always is a fun quick still thinky game. This time I went for a full on building strategy, getting tons of points from those, my horses and sheep did the rest. My gf played a good game but my best score ever (around 80) was just to much.
We still got a lot of exploring to do from the stuff we already have, still a bunch of buildings we haven't really seen.

We very much like this little game, we didn't really like it's big brother (my gf hated it, I did enjoy it but it wasn't love so we got rid of it), but this is a definite keeper.
Perfect couples game, big recommendation thumbsupthumbsup
