"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Board Game: Scoville

Board Game: Scoville
Scoville - Dust Level: 2 Years, 2 Months - I learned this a couple of years ago and have had in on my wishlist every since waiting for the right deal to come along. It never did, but an awesome and generous friend of mine won an extra copy in a raffle and gave it to me. I got it to the table right away when I had a chance to teach my wife the game. She enjoyed it a lot - it's hard to resist those awesome pepper meeples!

Board Game: Martian Rails
Martian Rails - Dust Level: 1 Year, 6 Months - This is one of my favorite crayon rails maps and I was happy to get it to the table again this month. All of those vintage SciFi references incorporated into the game are so great!

Board Game: Ubongo
Ubongo - Dust Level: 1 Year, 3 Months - I learned the game several years ago with a 1st edition copy of the game. Then just over a year ago I acquired my own copy and was surprised to see the scoring mechanism had been completely reworked in the new edition. I liked the original scoring mechanic much more, so when I had a chance to get a 1st edition copy at the Origins flea market for a few bucks, I jumped at the chance. After playing it again, I'm glad I got the 1st edition for myself. That classic scoring mechanism is just so much more interesting.

Board Game: Clacks: A Discworld Board Game
Clacks: A Discworld Board Game - Dust Level: 1 Year, 1 Month - After noticing this game had got dusty when I made up my New to Me A Year Ago list, I got it back to the table for a cooperative game. We lost horribly. But we're going to try again soon. It's a very satisfying challenge.

I liked it less than I remembered. Gameplay is too erratic with big swings in scoring. The wind wheel variant that we played has an underdeveloped feel to it.

This one didn't disappoint on replaying it as Australia did. But it revealed itself as a huge AP trap. Given the potential for runaway losers early in the game, it can outstay its welcome by far for those players. I like the 'choose your battle' combined with the game of chicken in the action selection. It needs to be played at least a bit from the gut though.

A month of dusty games for me due to three things:
1) We finally are looking for some variety in gaming, not wall to wall Terraforming Mars, like we have been playing for the last three months!
2) My children have been on school holidays, so I've been pulling out some of our older, less-played games, to see if they still want to keep them, or might enjoy them now they're older
3) My father has been on a mission to introduce new games to my children now that they're getting older, as they were getting bored with the more childish ones they usually play with him.
This has led to a huge number of dusty games this month - both from my own collection, and games I don't own but are part of my parent's collection, that I haven't played in many years!

Imperial - Dust Level 22 months

One of the rondel games I enjoy but not quite as much as Antike. I introduced it to some new players this month, who seemed to enjoy it, so it might table again in less than 2 years next time!

Odds On - Dust Level 21 months

An old game of mine that I play with the kids from time to time, but after this play we decided to get rid of it, as they really don't enjoy it that much.

Taxi! - Dust Level 19 months

This is one of my grandparents' old games that I inherited, and I pull out from time to time, but is never going to be a real favourite. The children quite enjoyed the play this time (last time they were a bit young), so it might see more play in the future.

Balderdash - Dust Level 17 months

A university staple that we don't play very much any more. It was quite fun for a change.

Leonardo da Vinci - Dust Level 17 months

This is one of those games that is fun to play occasionally, but doesn't have enough variability between games for me to want to play it too often.

Mapominoes: Europe - Dust Level 17 months

This one I suspect I missed recording a play at some point, because I'm sure we played it last summer holidays! A game I only play with kids, and not particularly often, but they do enjoy enough for me to keep hold of.

Der dreizehnte Holzwurm - Dust Level 15 months

A slightly unusual card game filler that I enjoy, but being a much older game not many people know it so it's not that easy to table nowadays.

Mississippi Queen - Dust Level 15 months

A much older race game, that I always have to teach to someone when I pull it out, as it's not one that many people know. Quite fun for something a bit different.

Powerboats - Dust Level 15 months

Another race game that's a little bit different, but is fun to pull out from time to time - race games don't tend to be things that come out too often in our games group.

Royal Palace - Dust Level 15 months

It's very different to other games of its type, and is interesting to play as a result, but very abstract, so not one I choose to play too often.

Dominoes - Dust Level 13 months

My father always loved to play threes and fives with dominoes with me, and this month he pulled it out with me and my children, which we haven't played since last year.

Dusty games I don't personally own but dug out this month for the first time in years:

Traditional Card Games - Dust Level unknown but probably about 30 years

My father was trying to remember all his, and my, childhood favourites, to introduce to my children now that they're getting older, and played Chase the Lady with me and my mother (the children weren't actually interested, but did watch us play). Once he started setting it up and explaining I did remember it, but very hazily, so I suspect it's one I played when I was very young, but not after that! Certainly something I'll try to remember for when we're on holiday with a pack of cards.

Go: The International Travel Game - Dust Level unknown but at least 15 years

One of my childhood games that my father introduced to my sons for the first time this month. My youngest enjoyed it so much that he asked to play it again straight away, but unfortunately we didn't have time.

Formula-1- Dust Level 15 years

One of my father's favourite childhood games that he introduced to my older son this month. I'm now hoping he might be willing to try Formula De.

Despite playing Terraforming Mars 14 times in July, I did get to play a bunch of other games, including 3 dusty ones.

Board Game: Assyria

Dust level 5 years, 3 months

Assyria was the dustiest. Played a two player game and quite enjoyed it. Deserves play much more often

Board Game: A Few Acres of Snow

Dust level 4 years, 2 months

Taught this to my friend Matt who loves war games. It is pretty rare I play two player games with anyone besides my gf (who actually owns this one), so given the opportunity I brought it over his house and he quite enjoyed it. Lots of fun, especially if neither player knows the 'Halifax Hammer' broken strategy.

Board Game: Medici

Dust level 2 years, 11 months

Excellent 6 player auction game. Not a niche that frequently needs filling. Everyone had a good time.

I recently got the Kemet: Ta-Seti expansion, but it had been so long since we'd played that we warmed up with a play of just the base game. We played to 8 points, and we were tied 7 to 7 on the penultimate day, but I got to determine turn order. Still, if my opponent had attacked the level-4 pyramid district in my city defended by 2 units and the Mummy, instead of the level-4 pyramid district defended by 3 units, I think she might have won! We did go on to play again a few days later, this time adding in black pyramids and power tiles, as well as new Divine Intervention and combat cards from the expansion.

Agricola is one of those games that for a while now is a game that only sees the table on an annual basis as the traditional kick off to my friends hosted RayCon. Last year I was not able to attend at the start so it has been a two year drought. This is a game where I have never really grasped or gotten very good at leveraging my cards and it showed. I got crushed mainly due to card play and sitting too long in last in turn order.

My wife and I finally got this back to the table and got our first exposure to the Kraken expansion. The addition of the Nebulis (black pearls) and smugglers adds a new dimension players have to account for in their decisions. My wife continued her domination and did it far better than I did. I took the Kraken penalty at the end and she had 3 locations to my one. Not a great performance on my part.

I like the idea of social deduction games but struggle to get others interested. At RayCon we had a rush of folks show up just after lunch so I volunteered to facilitate something for both new and experienced gamers by getting Avalon back to the table. Half way through the first play my youngest showed up and gladly jumped in the second play as it is one of the few games she likes.

I won playing a minion in our fist 6p game. Some players got it, some were still a little confused but we got through it. One of the kids who watched the first game also jumped in on the second game and surprisingly had a great grasp of the game play which was nice to see. My daughter and I won the second game among the minions.

zombie Keep playing...

It has been at least 3 years since i had last played this. Only had one person show up for game night and we chose this on a whim.

We both enjoyed it, but this game is firmly in the average category for me. I've tried a couple lighter worker placement games and I think its time to move onto a heavier one.

The person I was playing with really enjoys the mechanic so far and wants to try Caverna. I might by it around Christmas.

Board Game: Smash Up

Been about four years since I played Smash Up. I didn't care for it then and I still don't think much of it. The whole thing just falls flat for me. And I even won this last game. My shelf it starting to fill up and I've already started getting rid of games. I'll keep this one for now but its on the chopping block.

Wow almost 2 years since my last play of this one. A friend of mine came from out of town and wanted to play some games. He remembered playing this game years ago when we were roommates and we busted it out. IN the end we only killed 1 boss (the demon), but we had a good time. As a bonus we even got to break in my freshly painted minis. Only about 8 more to go.

This is a family classic. Although I only have 8 logged plays on BGG, I suspect our family has played at least 100 games. My oldest daughter is 23, I believe she began playing with us when she was 4. Bohnanza has affected our terminology when we play other games. When playing TTR, wenspeak of "planting our trains." Fun game with tremendous family memories.

I was surprised that it had been so long since I had played Love Letter. It is a filler I really enjoy. Our family played a four player game. It took us about 45 minutes, because we are very competitive and we ganged up on the leader so that when the winner (me) got his fourth cube, all the other players had three cubes. I think I usually play this with 2 or 3 players. I am wondering if other players have found the 4 player game I've Love Letter lasting that long?

It may not be sexy, but Clue is one of the few games that everyone. We have created our own forms so we can record information everyone someone asks for a clue or someone show Information. My youngest daughter is 17. She doesn't play many games with us, but when we play Clue, she brings out 12 different colored pens to record information in her special code. Another game with lots of family memories.

This is my middle daughter Joy's favorite games. I was hoping she had forgotten about this game, but I'm the one that had forgotten that I had given it to her. I find this game painful, but I endure it because I know that my kids have endured playing some games with me that I truly enjoy. I am a little nervous that now that she has gotten it out, we may have more games of Sheriff of Nottingham in our future.

I appreciate what Race for the Galaxy is doing, but I've never been able to raise up my level enough to feel competent. I just feel like I'm floundering around. I tried it again on BGA and met with my similar struggles I've had in the past. I also tried a few games on Keldon and got worked over there as well.

Ah the return to Africa, that clumped continent that leads to excessive hoarding and frustration. To be fair this wasn't as bad as I remember it - still my least favourite of the Ticket to Ride maps. I want to try and play it a few more times (bringing the play count up to 5) so if I enjoy each play this much more it might end up being one of my prefered maps.

Signs that Ragados is back in the UK - I'm playing LoTR again. Instead of continuing from where we left off (and taking on the 25 LoTR expansions that Dev has and hasn't played) we are starting from the top. With that these three plays were the ones from the base game. Scenario one remains really easy, two was a nice struggle, and three hit us so bad in the first round we resigned. I was two heros down due to bad luck on the set up and the shadow card - and given we where using a tri colour deck for me... yeah. Be interesting to see how we find various scenarios the second time round.

Deciding on a four player game using... I can't remember the ancient one. The one that turns you to dust - and the Curse of the Dark Pharaoh events and Herold. It did not help that I got given an exhibit item (cursing me) and then failed to get rid of the curse for ages with 3 stamina (the Herold harms you every round you don't get rid of your curse and gives you a curse if you get an exhibit item). We won, by closing all the games but we got lucky with a string of mythos cards trying to open gates where we had sealed.

So when my Dad recently uttered the line "I've never lost a game of Agricola" we knew the gauntlet had been thrown down. So with my younger brother we managed a three player game of which the most common phrase was "We used to be better at this". Still had a lot of fun and my Dad was last. I really should play this more but it can't seem to gain traction and my game days.

Ending a game day with a 7 player game of Bang. Ah the role of the renegade - a hapless one likely to end in rapid death rather than anything else. One of the Outlaws was eliminated before his first turn by someone who later turned out to be another one. I was also culled rapidly leaving a lot of deputy and Sheriff round the table. As one of the players who was eliminated early I do see the issue with player elimination games that drag - but I also see the hilarity in dynamite spinning it's way round the table.

Chrononauts is one of those games I've owned for ages, and played to death at uni game soc. These days it's take that nature and the fact that 9 times out of 10 the winner is the person whose timeline we accidentally entered grates on me slightly these days.

We played two games of Creationary - one of them using Codenames cards and setting the die to the most suitable category (the ? got used a lot) and it was a real hoot. Ever tried to make a face with lego? Without everyone shouting Android? Or witnessed someone make a field? Breathing fresh life into the game.

This game is halfway between utterly frustrating and zen like - and I love it. Bouncing a ball to play Naughts and Crosses is genius - and the opportunity for disrupting your opponents plans keeps you on your toes.

I like colorful games and this one has it spades - especially with 6 players. Works really good at every player - although 5 player can get a little wonky and feels looser.

A euro with direct player interaction. A little more thinky / chesslike than I enjoy, but I respect the tile shapes, and levels - I just don't "get it" like others do.

I don't own this one, but I enjoy every play I get of it. Made a few mistakes early choosing the wrong male employment track and that resulted in my going for 3 tiles in all 4 "families" along the right side of the player board. I almost squeaked out a win doing that.

Grim's tool still isn't working for me. I don't know why.

So, from memory, the ones that left the dust were:

Homesteaders - one day shy of 4 years. A very good and rather quick game - should have more chances in the future.

Eclipse - 2 years and 10 months. A tight game, but one player was screwed hard and the whole play got a little sour because of this.

Tzolk'in - 1 year and 7 months. I likely forgot how to play it, since I did nothing of notice, and even though I finished in second, if I add the score of the fourth place, I still wouldn't match the score of the first place.

Battle Line - 15 months. One of my favorite 2p games.

And that was it!

Regards,

I think, playing this about once a year is a good interval, playing more often would probably make this feel old quite soon. As it is, we enjoyed our game and the artwork is just so gorgeous. We played on the train and it worked just fine, needed less space than I remembered.

Dust level: 80-bajillion years (closer to 30 really)

Not having anything close to a photographic memory, 30+ years was enough time for me to forget the solution(s) to this game. The game is basically a choose-your-own-adventure book, but it has the nice benefit of supporting hit points and attributes that effect die rolls. I was killed by a goblin fairly quickly on my first play but on my second made it further before also dying. I'll pick it up again soon and play more conservatively.

When this was suggested, I didn't remember playing it. When we went through the rules explanation, I had a vague inkling. But it wasn't until we actually got into the game that I thought, "Hey, I think I've played this before." And BGG confirmed it. Based on my game comments, I was able to refresh my memory a bit about the previous play, which was the only other time I've played it. With players more experienced at social interaction the second time the game went a little better, even though most of the players were new to Salem.

Of Knizia's tile laying trilogy (actually it's more than a trilogy now), I still say Tigris is best. But I enjoy this one almost as much. I have no idea how long of a hiatus it has been, but it has been several years. Hope the next play is sooner than that.

Summer is the time to re-play old favorites instead of playing lots of new Essen/Nurnberg/Christmas titles.

Journey to the Center of the Earth
Dust level: 7 years & 9 months

A thematic Rüdiger Dorn game that I learned and played when I went to Essen the first time in my life. While it's not the greatest game ever, I liked it back then and I still like it for what it is: it's a clever set collection family game with somewhat fiddly rules more or less following the events of the book it's based on.

Ra
Dust level: 7 years & 4 months

Oh my, I haven't played this classic in ages. Too bad it's a divisive one and even now half of the people I taught it to did not like the experiene. I still think it's great.

Tobago
Dust level: 6 years & 11 months

Now this one really feels a bit too fiddly for what it is. It would be an innovative family game but there are just a bit too many rules (and too many things to do when you discover a treasure) for that. I'm going to play it a few more times with my kids but at this moment it was not a success and I did lower my rating.

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers
Dust level: 2 years and 5 months

Good old Hunters and Gatherers, a game I learned more than a dozen years ago. It saw more plays back then (it did not have to compete with hundreds of other games in my collection) but I still think this is one of the better Carcassonne stand-alone games out there.

Red7
Dust level: 1 year & 10 months

At last I got my Hungarian copy I wanted to get for one and a half years so I could play it. It's still fine.

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
Dust level: 1 year & 2 months

Just like Hunters & Gatherers this one got a lot more plays when it had a lot smaller competition at home, but I still enjoyed it now.

Battle Line
Dust level: 1 year

And another game that's in my collection since 2008. Even though it gets one or two plays every one or two years now, it still feels like I haven't played it for long, we played it so often (40 times) in its first year.

It's been about 6 years since I played Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I've been wanting to play this game again because I like the theme, but I had no one to play it with. So, I created a solitaire variant and played it anyway.

In my solitaire variant, there are many ways to lose the solo game, but only one way to win (successfully escaping to the surface and fulfilling all the fossil card/points requirements for my variant). Each turn, the player draws and then plays cards. Used cards are discarded and none of the decks are ever reshuffled, and if a card must be drawn and there are none left in that deck, the player loses. Also, the player loses if she cannot move an explorer -- or the raft in the later parts of the game -- forward at least 1 space.

If anyone has any interest in my solitaire variant, subscribe to the Journey to the Center of the Earth BGG page so you will get notified when I post it in the forums there soon.

Current rating (using my solitaire variant): d10-8

That was my only dusty game played last month, but it got a lot of plays (as did some non-dusty games).

My sons and I played this in honour of Dominion (Canada) Day this year. We ran the government rather poorly (perhaps the perks thrown to the Prime Minister and his supporters was a bit over-generous?), and our country went bankrupt. Any suggestions that the kleptocracy had any inspiration in any current administration is probably out of scope for this entry, though.

This was with a group of a dozen-and-a-half extended family members (from four different countries of residence): and it worked really well. We had seventy-five names in the hat; and managed sixty-eight unique names in that pool. And had a glorious time.

I still haven't played the Britannia expansion; but it was still delightful to have this back on the table this month. Despite the lack of plausible theme, I find the play quite engaging and fun. Both of these (entirely disjoint, other than me) groups seemed to enjoy themselves, too.
