"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Wow! I attended a meet up a couple of weeks ago and I'm really glad I brought this beauty with me! It had been far too long since I had last played it. Fortunately, my sole opponent was patient with my inexpert teaching, and managed to beat me quite soundly as well. Regardless, it was great to get this to the table once more, and I'm going to do my best never to let it get quite so dusty again.

I really enjoyed my few plays of this back in my teens, and I was thrilled when I was able to pick up a copy a few years ago. I finally managed to play this a couple of weeks ago, and it was every bit as fun and thematic as I recall. It may have helped that I set up the lands as one continent rather than the typical archipelago; I remember getting stranded -a lot- back in the day!

My least favourite Game: 1825 unit, but one that I'm still happy to play if there's just two of us. I did play this one poorly and ended up conceding victory before we broke the bank. The loss did make me more interested in playing it again sooner than later.

Have a real love/hate relationship with this game as it's brutal. I also lost this one badly, but would like to table it again sooner than later.

Anne and Tom were visiting for our con, and Anne's a big Settlers fan. I prefer the base game, but she likes variety. We settled on this game, which is a lot like the base game, but adds some things (most notably, the opportunity to build temple stones.) We played with 3, and I wound up ignoring temple stones entirely while my two opponents spent a lot of effort on them, and as a result, I won. I think this game is a little less balanced than the base game, but I'm still happy to play it from time to time. And at WBC, a few weeks later, Anne won the Settlers tournament!

I've been reading comments about haggling games recently, and this reminded me that it's been a long time since I played this one. I especially thought our friend Sam LaFleche would enjoy it, so I arranged a game with Dan and Ian Miller and Sam. Dan and I kept choosing the same roles as other players, while Sam and Ian were more on their own. This made it a less interesting contest than it normally would be. But I really like the uniqueness of the game and would like to play it more often than once every 8 years!

I took part in the 18xx tournament this year at WBC, and made it to the finals for the first time in 8 tries. The game used in the finals is 1830, which I don't care for that much. I've actually played it 5 times, but the first two were back in the 1980's before I started recording all my plays.

One of my top 10 games, I'm astonished it has gotten so dusty. I really thought I'd played it more recently! Fortunately it hadn't lost any of the magic and is still a fast, fabulous favorite.

I don't own this and didn't really care for it the first time (I'd rather play Legendary) but a co-worker cajoled me into a play. I liked it marginally better with a full set of players.

After a break of more than two years I played Madeira three times last month. I still like it but not as much as I did then so I lowered my rating from 8 to 7. The problem for me is not the heavyness of the game but that it's too puzzly without me feeling the thematic connection between theme and mechanisms. I know they started with the setting and theme and have made game based on that but they got better at it in their later games I think. This is still their best though.

I played this 5 times in a year with my VQ group but then needed a break from it. That lasted almost 18 months before I felt the need to get it back on the table again. The game lasted 10 hours which is clearly too long for only 3½ turns but I enjoyed the experience as much as I did initially. I look forward to more games of this and also trying the new 500th Anniversary Edition of Here I Stand when it comes out later in the year.

I cannot believe I hadn't played one of my to 3 games for more than a year! Perhaps because my girlfriend does not like abstracts and very few others around me do. 5 games now last month felt great though!
