Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- August 2017

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

Kids on Board Games Geeklist - SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

This Month

Welcome to the second ever Kids on Board games geeklist.

Well, there seemed to be a great reaction to the list last month so a big thank you to all who contributed, subscribed, advertised or simply just read it.

What I'd like to do now is gauge some thoughts and opinions on how you'd like to progress this in the future. What I'm thinking of is having volunteer host each month - how do people feel about that? Hosting is very simple, all it entails is the creation of the list and I will give you the header code as a template to maintain some continuity, and that is about it. You have no need to post or comment but it's always better if you do.

I'd also like to see what people think about maybe having simple themes each month (the Couples geeklist theme last month was Travel, or we could use game mechanics e.g. tile laying)? Of course, you are not limited by the theme, you can add any game whatsoever, themes are just another way to inspire you to pull out a forgotten or hardly played item. Whatever your thoughts drop them into the comments below but be all that as it may, as usual, simply take a look around, make yourself at home, and have fun!

Strictly speaking, this wasn't me playing a game with my kids. This was my kids getting a game out themselves because they wanted to play it! #prouddad.

The tidying up of the game they did after playing wasn't quite so joy filled for me though. I've found at least 2 sets of character cards lying around the house since yesterday! I'll have to go through the whole components list to check everything's there!

Mr. E (11) and I (Methusalian) walked over to a local bakery/coffee shop and played this three times. It is a refined little game in which players share a cattle rustler, taking cows in order to gain the most valuable herd at the end of the game (not necessarily the largest). There are also some special abilities that can be placed on each board tile, along with the possibility of the game ending when one player is arrested. It's very modular, thus very replayable, and very quick.

This is one of the few games that Mr. E will consistently call for another play right away. I won the first game, but he won the next two, each ending in arrest.

play through with Mr E, I set this out for the mini celts (ages 6/9) with some trepidation in that E (the youngest) would grasp the game and not get upset by the mechanics. Well it was a massive hit both kids loved it, and E was really good at programming his mech (luck? we'll see).

Played the tutorial twice, blasted through 'short fuse', and have had one failed attempt at 'Swift Scouts'. New tactics required on that mission.

Great fun for all /

Half a deducted because of the need to check and recheck rules, but I'm sure our flow will get better

Kyle and I got a play of this in. We played COOP on the easy level just to see how things work two player and it was a lot of fun to play. We won pretty easily with no loss of life which is unusual for me. I tend to die quickly on my own.

He came up with a nifty bookkeeping item. He doesn't like keeping the card and then discarding it. We decided that when we gained an expertise and there was only one. Add a health token to that character but add it it up near their icon. Keeping their actual health towards the bottom of the card. If there was a choice expertise we kept it to discard later but a lot less upkeep. It worked splendidly and I will transfer over to my solo plays as well.

A few weeks ago the whole family--Mr. E (11), Mrs. K (timeless) and me (Methusalian)--stopped at the LGS. My wife hasn't always had the patience to play new games, so it's often just my son and me who are playing. However, she saw this game and was immediately fascinated. Since she was young, she has been an avid reader of things related to Tesla. Given her excitement, Mr. E and I knew this would have to be a birthday present. I was only worried that the game would be too convoluted for her to enjoy.

In the end, it was a hit with her, but more to my surprise, it was a huge hit with Mr. E. I taught him to play early in the middle of the day, before she got home from work. He was chomping at the bit to teach it to her. Indeed, he did a good job explaining how things worked. Mrs. K warmed up to the game slowly, and as soon as the two of them knew how to screw me over, they had a jolly time. In the end, Mr. E won, despite lagging behind in tech for most of the game, by working the stock market. I came last, but I'm happy that we found something new for all of us.

After a mind numbing game of mousetrap (why did it seem much better as a child?) I taught my daughter (6) this game I won at Euroquest last year. Essentially you are trying to score points by laying colored tiles that match the board. The tiles you lay up to 5 and you draw the difference (Lay 2 tiles you draw 3 for example). The game doesn't wow me with strategy but I look at it as a colorful fun number scrabble like that lets her work on her adding skills. She enjoyed the play and next we will play it three player. I won but she didn't play badly at all.

Pulled this out after a year or so. Kids always find this entertaining to play with. My 9yo son has been playing this competently since he was 7. My 6yo son did play with it also, didn't see how he went, but suspect it is still a little too difficult for him.

It's been a year and a half since this last got played.

Managed to acquire 2 sets of the german Carabande edition. Last time we played the kids seemed to lose interest after about 5 minutes, so traded one of the sets.

This time around after 5 minutes of play, I bowed out. The kids were still at it though an hour later, constantly re-arranging the tracks to form new layouts and inventing their own rules.

This game just sits there. We got this a year and a half ago because I thought it would be nice to have one of the new "dice games," like Roll for the Galaxy or Nations. Both Mr. E (11) and I (beyond old) like the game, but it always seems out of mind, not something we ever think about playing until we stumble upon it. I think it is because the game doesn't transport you in the way you expected.

Let me explain. The game is beautiful. Vincent Dutrait's artwork set this beautiful scene that makes you feel like you are going to be simulating making contact with Native Americans and going on naturalist journeys through the American landscape, discovering interesting wildlife along the way. When I look at my first card, I think, "I need to ford two rivers and a mountain. How am I going to do that?" Progressively, I get better at those things, and the speed of the game ramps up as each us tries to fulfill as many contracts as possible. And that's the problem: by the end of the game, I am almost completely taken out of the theme, and while I am still having fun, I'm just fulfilling contracts. There is not danger or risk, and despite the name of the game, there is no discovery. There's isn't even flavor text to give a sense of what I achieved with each contract.

Discoveries isn't difficult and it is enjoyable. The tacking back/stealing dice thing is neat. I like how you can enhance your abilities by acquiring the tribal cards. However, it is way to Euro-y: the mechanics are too refined and abstract, and the magic we feel at the start of the game disappears, even though we are still having fun playing.

Played with my 9- and 11-year old, and my mother-in-law, yesterday. There was a somewhat steadier hand from the adults vs the children in this game. The kids kept knocking the pile over. My mother-in-law won, with just one stick left for me on my next turn!

Visiting my wife's aunt over the weekend, her aunt brought out her box of miscellaneous children's toys and games, and my 9-year-old found this lovely chess set amongst them. She really wanted to try it, so I figured why not, so taught her the rules.

She picked it up very quickly, and did really well (I pointed out the odd bit of strategy here and there, but let her make her own decisions in the end). I did end up winning, but she put up a decent fight, and she enjoyed playing it a lot.

Time to dig the old chess set out from my games cupboard, it seems!

Time for more games with granny yesterday, with my 9- and 11-year olds (and me).

This game is a simple spin & take game, where you spin the spinner and choose a tile. When flipped over, if it's a rocket trail, you add it to your rocket; if it's your end-rocket, you cap your trail and you're out for now; if it's someone else's end-rocket, it goes back down and you 'space shuffle' the tiles.

It has about as much game as Snakes and Ladders does. It WOULD have a memory aspect if it weren't for the instruction to 'space shuffle' all the tiles around after you replace a non-matching rocket, but as it is, it's simply grab what you get.

Still, my 9 year old enjoyed it, as she won with 14 points, then my 11-year-old with 11, me with 10, and poor old granny with a measly 2.

My 6yo daughter wants to learn a new game every two or three weeks shake. This month we played some Elfenland. She can't really think out a strategy yet, so we just discuss some options at the start of every turn and I help out when she can make the travel path longer than she thought.

Board Game: Mint Works

On a recent camping trip we took a few games with us but with so much to do during the day we rarely felt up for a game once we got back to the caravan. However, we did manage a game of Mint Works which was new to the kids.

It's a light worker placement game that comes in a teeny tiny tin and is very easy to teach and play.

The kids picked up the gameplay easily enough but set themselves strange little tasks - D(10) wanted to avoid using the Producer for the entire game for some reason (although she did own the Wholesaler) both locations offer more mints (i.e. workers) and B(8) wanted to hold onto the first player token at all costs so they handicapped themselves a little.

A mixed reaction from the kids:

From gallery of Ibbo

D(10) - good game but can be annoying when someone keeps the first player token the whole game
B(8) - good game but it's annoying when someone buys the card you have been saving up for

Scores - Dad 8, Mum 7, D 4, B 3

I think they enjoyed the game generally but I think they found it a little dry - theme goes a long way for them. It's not just about the points.

This is my favorite tabletop miniatures game. It sets up fast, it plays fast, it plays on a small surface (3x3), it can be played with cool terrain, it has the historical element, and it simplifies the arcane elements of the flight path system. Mr. E (11) likes it because, well, TANKS.

This time we brought the game to our LGS because my son's opponent was Mr. R, a 9 year old friend from Karate. We had met with him a few times, and the two had played X-Wing already. I hoped that this could be easily learned because the rules were simpler than X-Wing. The terrain element, though, was different enough that the Mr. R had difficulty adjusting to the tactics. He spent a lot of time early in the game just hiding his units (2 Shermans, a Jackson, and a Pershing) white Mr. E was frustrated trying to get in (Panther, Jagdpanther, Panzer IV, StuG).

And they were very argumentative. They debated everything. I was worried that they were no getting along. Mr. R's dad, Mr. O, looked at it differently: two nerdy kids trying to prove how much they knew about a nerdy topic. He was probably right.

The game went much longer than expected. Being so defensive drew out the play. I think Mr. R got into it, and even did some really clever (perhaps gamey) things. Only one tank ended up being destroyed, one of Mr. R's Shermans, which I guess gave Mr. E a narrow victory, although Mr. R had inflicted a lot of damage on all Mr. E's units. After it was over, Mr. R suggested they do the desert war.

We were going to play Band of Brothers: Ghost Panzer last night, but I took too long setting it up, and we had forgotten enough rules that we left it on the table for today. Instead, we brought out an old chestnut. Usually I have the advantage because Mr. E refuses to trash cards. Indeed, I thought I would win, because with all my Trade Federation ships, I was healing faster than he could damage me. Eventually,he got a lot of cards that forced me to discard from my hand, making me lose.

D(10) likes to build long trains and tempt people to load

It plays quite quick and also comes in a really small box but has a biggish footprint. At the moment the sudden end still surprises us but everyone has a good time.

D came second and B third with Mum last but I forgot to take a thumbs pic at the end - doh!

Played this a couple of times with my son Tyler. He loved it and asked for a copy of his own which I gladly added to my pledge manager.

Fun game that has definitely grown on me both as a solo game and with one of my sons.

Should rename this game Bumble Bros as we were captured as soon as we made the second floor. I really like this game and the APP is spectacular. Will still break out the boardgame as I like the pieces and moving around but the random floor layouts in the APP are great. Have considered using the app to set up my random floors and then playing that way.

Tried this with my two sons.

Meh- I think this is just so much better solo or maybe with one other to discus options each turn. The passing the book around was a pain and the discussions could get frustrating trying to agree what needs to be done. All were gone by day 2.

Just finished the first game of this. Technically I won but only because Z played a 1 to just cross the finish line. Had he played his 6 he would have beaten me by a couple of lengths. I liked that he was thinking of what he needed and played to his plan. To his credit he didn't get a full rules breakdown as he just turned 4. This was one of his gifts.

Enjoyed by us both.

So we were in the game store this month and I wanted to get something to play with the kids that was fairly light and not too expensive. I saw the HeroClix starter set and though, let's give it a try. After all, I had many heroclix at home that I bought just to be miniatures for games so I thought it wouldn't cost much (silly me).

The kids were excited and we got and immediately played a game with my three older kids. My girl is 9, and my boys are 8 and 6. My baby twins who are two also stayed by us, occasionally throwing dice... I mean rolling dice, for us. My kids loved it. Here are their scores:

My twins also wanted to get in on this rating, so they gave their thumbs up too!

We had so much fun, the next day my daughter wondered if we could just get a few more characters, she really wanted a wonder woman. So a little bit more money later, we had another map and some new characters and we all played again and had a great time.

Then my kids wondered if we could get some heroes from one of their favorite cartoons, Teen Titans Go. So, back to the store the next day and a little bit more money later, we are playing again.

And again.

Now I had recently introduced my kids to one of my favorite cartoons as a kid, the originally teenage mutant ninja turtles, and they really like it. They just happened to see a starter set of them at the game store. So a little bit of money later, we're playing some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles heroclix!

Finally, they want to know if they can get all the super heroes they know about, you know, X-Men, Spiderman, Avengers, Justice League and so on. They name off some heroes that they would really like, and lets be honest, I'm enjoying the game way more than I thought I would. So I head over to Troll and Toad and buy a bunch of individual heroclix, so a lot of money later, we are playing again.

Now I'm done buying for a while (don't roll your eyes at me) but we are still playing and having a blast. I think we've ended up playing around 10 games so far in the last two and half weeks. This ended up being a great addition to the collection and a game the kids love to play, whether we play just a short game with a few heroes or a long battle, they are into it. I'm a happy dad and really enjoying playing games with the kids.

My wife, 7 & 5 yo and I played this. We lost and all died together at the same time in the same place. We would have won if the last card we had to flip over wasn't a Sun Beats Down. We got two of them in the same turn. We were about to get water, but didn't make it. We would have survived if we did what my 7yo daughter suggested, but we didn't and died...

I don't think our 7yo will let us live it down.

Just my 7yo & I played it. We lived! It really helped that she was a pilot and fly around or else we probably wouldn't have made it.
