Seven Springs hosted the BPA's annual convention for a second time and the new feel has worn off for me and 7S feels now like home. I know where things are and I started to learn shortcuts around the facility. I go to WBC to meet people, play new games and old favorites, and pretty much have as much fun as I can with as little drama as possible.

mission accomplished.

Here's what I remember about my con ....

Seven Springs played host for WBC 2017 and I have very little to complain about. My father and I brought much of our own food, but when I did eat I was happy with the meatball subs at the pizza place. I was surprised that I only went to the Ice Cream shop once - but holy cow did they give you a ton of ice cream!

They scoop it higher than people's heads!

I did a short walk through for my wife to see how the area looked:

Most of my gaming at WBC falls in the open gaming room - however I do play in several tournaments as I am able. Most of my tournament gaming I consider "scheduled" open gaming - here are the tournaments I played in.

Air Baron was the game that brought me to WBC in 2000, and this was the 3rd year I GM'ed the event. I was informed in May that longtime friend and past Air Baron GM Henry Richardson had passed after battling cancer. I dedicated this event to his memory this year.

I was able to play in my usual 5 games this year - however one of those games was not in a heat. I passed my seat to my buddy Fred in heat 4 to keep 5 player tables. I had won my first heat so I knew I'd be in the semi finals. I played a very solid semi final and won to go to my first ever final.

My final table game played out like many of my previous semis - with no payouts and a languishing 5th - but the final table was won by Jim - who I believe was another of Henry's good friends.

Henry's Tribute

Heat 4 action

This is the kind of fun I like to see at Air Baron

Jeff's rise and fall of Toucan

Really cool to see Don in the Air Baron event - he made the Semi-finals!!

Vegas Showdown was the first game I would ever play over in the Ski Lodge. I won my first heat in a great game with great people ... I only remember Anni Foasberg was the game owner, but I enjoyed the heat.

The second heat I played was at Craig Trader's table with Alex Bove and ... memory loss moment, one other player. Very close game that I know I did not win, but I think it was fairly close.

In my semi - I played at Mike Kaltman's table. This was a game that, for me at least, I could tell about 60% of the way through that I was not doing well. I had banked on trying to get a Theater, but it came out late and I was behind in cash at the time. Mike won our table by a good margin.

Great game to play at WBC and Eric runs a great event.

UP was the first final I ever played in a few years ago. I enjoy the game, but I don't really consider myself to be very good in the game despite the final appearance. I ran the event a few years to avoid it's demise, but was glad to hand it off to Steve who ran it again this year.

Steve ran a one day swiss event. I was able to play in one of the heats (to give him some play hours) and in a game I felt I did pretty well in, I still finished a close third (of four).

Time conflicts usually force me into a single heat of this favorite of mine, but this year I was able to get in two heats. Heat 1 matched me against Jeff Mullett. I had the last pick and technically the worst team (but Terry matches them so well that it's not like a 1 vs 16 game ... more like a 1 vs 5 team). Jeff took a 38-34 lead into the half. Something hit us both in the second half though - he won a close game 101-96.

In heat two, I had the first pick somehow -- I'm sure that alone was enough to break the event. I was able to win my first game against Wes Lewis (despite him rolling a trio of 6's on a single scoring roll AND having a AA center) but got run off the table by Jon Lockwood.

I played this game a few times in open gaming with someone named Darren (who I got to played several other games with, along with his other friend Darren).

One morning, I walked into open gaming and not much was going on so I signed up for a heat of this. I pulled out to a solid 9 point lead after the first round, but my dice went cold thereafter and I believe I finished 3rd, possibly 4th. Not a factor in this one.

This was the first game I played at the con and one of my go-to fillers. We didn't spend a ton of time looking over traits when building lineups, just picked who we thought were interesting.

What surprised me was that in ALL of my games, the pitching won. Good pitching beats good hitting I guess.

I had learned this a few weeks earlier and was happy to play in a few games. Somewhere, someone had compared this game to Splendor in some way and I can see it. I learned the game with one little mistake about the direction of the cards, but I played a few games with a really great play mat that made it easy to see which direction cards went.

I can see this being a trial event next year.

This was a game I really wanted to learn. A friend of mine compared it to the Colonists (which is a favorite of mine) and based on that I was eager to learn. Yokohama was my 3rd play of the week. After my dad and I finished our first Bottom of the 9th game, I spotted a couple guys with this box. I went over and played Century Spice with them before asking to learn this. I had a scheduled open game later which I was more prepared for thanks to the learning game.

My thoughts -- holy cow does this LOOK busy. So much stuff going on. After learning though, it really made sense. Strategically, I agree with my friend Rich - the text on the tech cards is TOO small. For a part of the game that is as important as it is, it's a shame.

I saw my buddy Marvin recruiting players for this. He was looking for players to play his two sons - who he claimed to expertly train in this one. He's right - they were both very good players. I was the only one playing this game with them at the time and I really enjoyed myself. Marvin can be a nut some times, and you can see a lot of the same intensity and good play in his kids.

I felt bad that I had to pass off my hand to Mike Kaltman's son, but it was around that time when my dad called to tell me we had to get moved into the room.

We had 4 for this one which was a pretty good number. This is such a quick game, was bummed to only get it out once. I was able to share cities with one of the younger attendees and we built a pretty good city together. Didn't write down who won, but I hope the kid we played with had a good time. His dad thanked us for playing (and watching his magic trick) with him and we found out he was on the spectrum. Once I heard that, I was really happy that I played with him. My son is HFA and I hope that when I finally take Derek to WBC he's welcomed by everyone as well.

Keith Levy was sitting with a table of boxes and I went over - we recruited two others and played this during a late night. I backed the new Cosmic Run on KS and as part of that bought this game. I figured this was a good chance to learn how to play. Biblios Dice plays very similarly to Cosmic Run. I like how you take your opponent's dice -- although the player to my left must've been really irritated with my rolls (I rolled 4 of a kind and 5 of a kind with crap left over a few times)

Has it really been 6 years since we brought this to WBC as a prototype? Well, this is the last year for that. After signing a contract with Nothing Now Games, I really feel confident that we will be able to get this to market next year. Jeff's plans revolve around getting his Title Chase series out there - Football and Basketball - with a Lords of Baseball Kickstarter during Spring Training.

We did some really good demos during the week and our experimental stadium tile concepts were well received. We didn't get to play with a full 8 like we did last year, but we got a 5P in with some new players who picked up the mechanics well. The fact that new players pick the game up so easily now (compared to 5 years ago when the rules read like PhD level textbooks) really gives me hope that this game will get out there and be enjoyed.

otherwise known as "Rampage the board game" -- wow was this really fun. For a dexterity style game (which I don't really like) this was a hoot. Paul has surprised me two years in a row now with games I was apprehensive about at first, but really enjoyed. Paul and I recruited the two Darren's I believe - can't even remember who won. I did enjoy throwing one of my opponent's main characters with my special action. That did some damage.

Enjoy Paul's frustration here:
