It's spring 1862 in my campaign with Rex. As the rebels this is the year in which I can win or lose the game so I need a to have a stormer. Things went badly in the west towards the end of 61 and my mischief in the east ground to a halt so RE Lee has come off the bench to get things moving again.

Go Rebs!

I'm a couple of hours into a game with Kai as the Union and me as the rebels. He recently beat me in 7 out of 8 games of Wir Sind Das Volk so I'm looking forward to playing him at something with cannons in it and blowing him up.

I decided to abandon my game of Here Come the Rebels. It's a long story but Steve and I have agreed to play the full campaign of that at his house.

So, I was in search of another game to solo at home. I've had this for years. It was the first game I bought when I got to Australia and is one of the few I have ever bought from a real games shop. This one was in Pitt Street, Sydney and is no longer there.

Anyway, I haven't played any Napoleonic games for a long time either so I thought I'd get this one on the table. It's the same battle as the game Steve and I were playing at his house recently too (also abandoned) so that is a nice bit of symmetry too. I have played a couple of the smaller games in this series so I sort of remember the rules. Over the weekend I set up the Battle of Eylau Scenario which is 4 turns long and is one of the basic scenarios.

A few things hit me straight away. First, this is a BIG game. Here is a picture of the two map set up (campaign scenarios use three maps) plus the two Organisation Displays, which are as big on their own as folio game maps. This has a BIG footprint....

From gallery of Moruya23

..but very low counter density. All the units are on the Organisation Displays and only the leaders make it onto the map.

From gallery of Moruya23

This is a big difference from Series: Great Campaigns of the American Civil War (Avalon Hill) which this system sort of resembles. Those ACW games have stacks like tower blocks.

Second, unlike the ACW game, this rule book is a great big mess. The errata I downloaded and printed last time I got this out of the box a few years ago is about the same size as the rulebook. The whole thing reads like the musings of someone thinking about a game rather than the superbly clear rules I have been playing with lately.

I am still working my way through the rules and errata. Luckily I am already familiar with the campaign itself but haven't yet decided on any plans for each side. It will take me a while to feel confident enough even to push one bit of cardboard.

I've just unleashed the hypothetical "dream" scenario of enemy in the east: Germany allied with Poland attacking the USSR in the summer of 1939.

So far the Germans are pressing hard as Leningrad and Kiev have fallen but Moscow and Kharkov stand firm. Romania has just joined the anti-Bolshevik campaign and the USSR is trying hard to get some allies, any allies, on the German flanks to make them pause and slow down (so far two attempts to woo Hungary have failed).

Once I finish this play, then I'll do the other two scenarios the Wehrmacht planned for: neutral Poland and either a northern (Baltic States) or Southern (ally with Hungary and Romania) route both to happen in 1939.

Have this set up, and have played the first couple of training scenarios to refresh my memory on the rules. It's a great choice for me when I'm too busy to think about anything heavier. I can pick up a scenario to solo when I get a spare hour and fire through it, and then pack it away again, and then take it out again the next spare hour or so I get.

I like my chrome, but with the Band of Brothers system less is more as the abstraction allows you to concentrate on gameplay and tactics. I'm really looking forward to giving some of the big scenarios a try in the recently-released Battle Pack.

OK, so Paolo taught me a little trick yesterday, now I have to try it out:

Game 778372

This game is sort of a stalemate right now. Score tied, most ships semi crippled, ie, they have lost at least one mast, and have no movement upwind. Auguste CAN move up wind, but only while she has all her masts. Not sure if I want to chase down Colossus, or just try to flank one of Gibralter or Leviathan to get rakes.

Gonna be tricky no matter what.

As that famous fighting admiral George S Patton once said, "We can still lose this war."

Just finished 1940 and the Axis is doing well. Italy joined the war just in time to help knock out mainland France. Once Algiers falls they will surrender. Just started the next turn and Yugoslavia also joined the Axis, so this may be tough sledding for the Allies. Not much going on yet in the Pacific except Chungking is held by the Japanese closing both the Silk and Burma Roads. Once China fails their isolation roll at the end of each turn they will sign a separate peace.

I reprinted the map after making some tweaks in Photoshop. The colors on the original were giving me migraines. surprise

I wanted to try the Civil War Clash of Giants since the first two in the series were enjoyable to play. I started off with the 2nd Bull Run scenario not wanting jump into the Gettysburg one right away. The game is getting ready to start the 2nd day after having some minor skirmishing going on in the first. After have playing Legion's Battle of the Little Bighorn and handing their thick counters, the GMT CoG:CW ones seem cheap to me.

Am pretty excited about this game. Unlike its bigger brothers (In Country and Vietnam) it does two month turns (versus weekly) which means a campaign game can be played in less than a year or two.... whistle

One problem so far. At start, there are very few units on either side so this allows a bunch of VC to waltz into an unprotected pop centers and start racking up big VP's. This starts a cascade of doom that the US can't stop before ARVN morale collapses in....'early '66. We are exploring some different strategies to stop this situation.

Lots to like here though: good treatment of Cambodia/Laos, hidden movement, options for full/partial Vietnamization, Amphib, Corps restrictions, airmobile, VC bases, fire bases, air missions, SAM, Chinese/Russian aid, etc.

We have been playing a three player campaign game since May, with another another year to go. The game will end Summer of 1946.

It doesn't look like the Germans are going to do very well, They are in to Russia but didn't take much and the Allies have a toe hold on Norway and are holding them off in Africa, but anything can happen.

I'm enjoying the tinkering involved in grafting Markus Stumptner's rules onto OSG's physical components, but once I started tinkering, I just kept on going a bit. I reset the last game because I wasn't quite happy with how slowly things got started because of the combination of rules I was using.

This time, on the west end of the line the French III Corps has given a frightful pounding to the Prussian I Corps, which is close to demoralization after failing to stop the III Corps nor get out of the way of the French IV Corps quickly enough in order to concentrate. The Prussian II Corps is taking over the center of the line and hoping that I Corps can hold on better to a shorter section of the line to the west.
From gallery of mmccalpin

In the meantime, Blücher has a trick up his sleeve and took advantage of the French IV Corps's engagement and lack of progress in the center. The Prussian III Corps is on the attack, hoping to roll up the French line. It may become a race to see whose right flank collapses faster. The wild card, as ever, is the Imperial Guard, who just moved a little bit east before the Prussian attack on the right. Maybe they will just keep on moving east to throw the Prussian attack backwards. It is a little odd to have Napoleon reacting to Blücher, but these were not the Emperor's best days.

Ney is making good progress at Quatre Bras, having shattered the 2 Netherlands division, and has a shot at taking the crossroads before the Anglo-Allied army can bring up enough forces to stop him. It just doesn't make as grand a photo as the fight at Ligny...

I feel like I just did this yesterday - Because I did!

I played a lot of Counter-Attack last month, and probably will this month, too, as I'm playing through a battle game (6 scenarios in this one). Most of the scenarios I've been playing have been 1 map, lower unit density ones and have moved very well. A couple have been kind of "meh", and most of them have been very well designed and exciting. I think this will remain on my table into/through August before I move to another front.

And on my upstairs table remains the game of this I've had set up for months. Because I'm playing so much Panzer Grenadier: Korean War – Counter Attack and because I'm not in this room as often, it's taken the back burner, although it has been moving forward this month. I want to get it wrapped and on to the next scenario in this battle game during August.

I've started playing this one over VASSAL. My next session is scheduled for Sunday, August 6. The topic wasn't high on my list, and my opponent had it at the top of his list, so I decided to give it a whirl. So far, I think it's a very interesting system. Not necessarily intuitive, and clever without too terribly much rules overhead. Of course, I've only read/played the basic rules, not the campaign rules, so that opinion is subject to change.

This VASSAL game is just about wrapped up. We're in the final propaganda phase, and right now it might be a 3 way tie with me winning on the tie breaker (I'm the Syndicate). Or not. I'm too inexperienced with the game to be sure I did everything right in the Propaganda phase. If I win, no one will be more surprised than me. I was in a terrible position much of the game and didn't think I had enough to come back (not complaining, btw).

Still playing "Return of the Guards" via VASSAL. More commitments for me has meant that my play time on this has decreased, and we are nearing the end, and I'm sure we'll fire up another one after that. I really enjoy this game a lot.

Our 3 player VASSAL game of this is now getting towards the end of 1943. Everybody is broke until 1944. The British had to scrap a number of ships just to get the resources to function this turn. The Kriegsmarine is already mostly scrapped. The Axis are reeling, and not done in yet. However, with fresh funds in 1944, the might of the US should see a major push towards Germany, and the Russians have just taken Warsaw, so I don't know that Hitler and Mussolini have long to be in power. And now the US has developed jets!

5 of us are playing a combined game of this and John Prados' Third Reich via VASSAL. We've only gone through 1 turn, and I'm Great Britain, so I haven't done much. Poland was not conquered in the fall (terrible dice for the Germans) and will probably not last the winter. Things are going on in the Pacific, and being a good British player, I plan to ignore them until it's too late.

This is a pretty massive game, and plays pretty smoothly.

The Wargame Bootcamp is demoing games at Pacificon again this labor day weekend in Santa Clara California.

I just got this game and I'm starting to learn it, the rules are not difficult but laying out the cards and what you should do are what I am working on now.

So I am hoping to get enough people at the con to have a large game.

I used to demo for Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) when Legend of the Five Rings originally came out. We had rules for version called Daimyo where there were generals who sat in one room with the decks of cards, the Daimyo's of the clans would sit in another room and there were runners that carried messages back and forth between the two. I was hoping to set up something similar for this, we'll see if I can get it together in time.

I have had this game for awhile and just read a good review of the game that inspired me to get this back to the table.

I actually served in Central America in 1989-1990 and while this game is not what really happened there I still enjoy the advanced rules to set policies and play the broader game of the U.S. vs Soviet.
