A list of operational wargames set during the Napoleonic wars. Maneuvre defines warfare in this era as much as tactics, so games covering a campaign are as interesting, if not more, than those covering a battle.

The goal of this list for me is to discover things I have not tried, so everyone should feel free to comment and add suggestions.

Scale: units are divisions, daily turns.

The Marshals system comprises five volumes as I write this, this one was my introduction to the series. This is now my reference system for operational Napoleonics.

The rules are very tight, a simple system of alternating activations with random movement and plenty of bluff due to fog-of-war. Battles are fast, with chrome given by event chits, and the amount of decision-making feels just right.

The Marshals system really shines here with a bigger map and good troops on both sides. It's race to Madrid for the Allies, with a potential hasty retreat when french reinforcements show up.

Divisional scale, daily turns.

A relatively little-known campaign, in which Moreau fights the Austrians in Germany. Two scenarios, one where the Austrian army has to retreat against bad odds and the other, after a lull in the campaign, where it has to make a stand.

An ambitious game, where the players have to juggle logistics and combat. The game revolves around the dual use of resources as depots (for supply) or activations (for movement) and forces hard decisions. Maintaining a supply line is crucial, and both players have interesting choices to make.

Divisional scale, one turn = two weeks.

Follow-up to 1812: the invasion of Russia. The two can be linked for a mega-campaign, but I have not tried it.

Each unit is a division, and one turn corresponds to two weeks of real time.

Same system as l'Armée du Nord, with a specific role for cavalry. I didn't go further than reading the rules so far.

Forthcoming game by the designer of the Marshals. I had the opportunity to try a prototype, and I liked what I saw. Very simple rules, but not simplistic, using blocks for fog of war and off-map display to record fatigue and losses.

Each block is one corps, each turn two days.

The rules are complex, but I think familiarity with other systems from the same designer helps. The subject very ambitious, covering not just the Belgian campaign, but the whole hundred days, with the rebuilding of the french army. I'm glad I own it, I doubt I'll ever get to play it.

It is operational, and it definitely is Napoleonics, so it belongs here. A very interesting game, completely asymmetric, with the fog-of-war at the heart of the game play.

Players manipulate fleet, with individual ships-of-the-line stored off map and revealed for simple but tense tactical engagements.

A classic, and for a good reason: it is excellent. I've introduced people to the hobby with it, it's simple enough for that, but full of flavor.
