Last night I took my kids to a Proms in the Park at our local town. It was film music themed, then moved on to the traditional last night of the Proms music (lots of flag waving and singing national songs), and finished with more film music with fireworks and laser light displays.

And have you attended any open air/picnic concerts? Do you enjoy them, or would you prefer to be indoors?

Do other countries have an equivalent "last night of the Proms" concert, with national music played that everyone knows the choruses to and sings along, and people buy flags specially to wave? What are some of your national songs?

For the British contingent - have you ever attended a Proms concert event, or watched it on TV? Do you have a favourite out of the standard last night of the Proms songs?

Taking this on to board games - are there any board games that are special to your country? Maybe ones themed on your country, or ones that you wouldn't expect to see played outside of your country.

Lots of new games to me this week, as I went to the club and was on a mission to try as many of the SdJ nominees as I could find. I really enjoyed, but also found very irritating, Magic Maze - I strongly suspect it's one of those games that can be great fun, but the wrong player or players can ruin it.

Most of the other new games I enjoyed but wasn't wowed by any - Century Spice Road didn't seem to have the elegance of Splendor, Kingdomino was ok but didn't grab me (although we have now got a copy, as my daughter received it as a gift), Honshu with the drafting variant was a really neat idea but I'm not sure I'll bother picking it up, and Karuba just seemed a bit tensionless - but the owner did say normally it wasn't quite so balanced.

We also acquired two new games last week - Plague Inc for my daughter's birthday, which is actually a great area control game themed on the app; and Millions of Dollars, which I'm not sure about yet - we definitely didn't have the right group to give it it's best shot, but it didn't have a good start.

I had a session introducing games to my 7 year old nephew mid-week, who is really starting to love games now. His favourite was definitely The Bucket King, and I bought him a copy from BGG marketplace before he left the house! He also enjoyed learning Sevens, so my sister is hoping to teach them that more. The third hit with him was Crappy Birthday, and I sent my sister home with an Amazon link for that one to buy him his own copy!

Other than that, the normal fare with the children - still working our way through all the Flash Point boards, as well as playing various other games. I also got a game of the new Through the Ages at the club, although it made me rather late home, as it took rather longer than I anticipated.

 8   Codenames x4
 N/A   Freight Train NEW!
 N/A   Trick of the Rails
 9   Throne and the Grail
 9   The Other Hat Trick
 N/A   Fuji Flush x3

Noteworthy games:

More Fuji Flush with the kids, which continues to be fun but also is simply better with more than four players. We also played SPY, which... hmmm, is okay but not something I feel the need to play again.

With my students, I had a rare day on which Codenames was very, very energetic and funny. It's hit or miss with them. We also played SHH, which I thought was enjoyable, but they requested that we never play it again.

A couple of train game highlights with N and her sister--the first was Freight Train. I was worried that it would be too similar to Gloria Picktoria, but I was pleasantly surprised to be worried for no reason. It's definitely longer, maybe less family friendly, and certainly more of a table hog, but by the end we were talking about what we would try next time with it.

The following night we played Trick of the Rails, and if we hadn't been so tired, I would have insisted we play again. It's a real head scratcher when learning for the first time (or learning again after not playing for 8-9 months) but once everyone sees what's happening, it's as fast as any good trick taker. It's also just at the periphery of my ability to play well. I need a lot more of this.

A great gaming week, including a very busy gaming weekend. I'll make Terraforming Mars my G-o-t-W. We've just learned it, and--while not a favorite--it got a fair try with us. In fact, my older boys are playing it two-player right now as I type this.

Also a bunch of plays for my two very favorite games: Netrunner and Ticket to Ride.

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

 8.2   Parade x2
9   This Is Not a Test
 7   Checkers x2

Not that much gaming over the last week. The high point was the return of my regular skirmish miniatures opponent. We each fielded a raider force in our most recent game of This Is Not a Test and I went down in a screaming heap. My game was characterised by plenty of jammed weapons and poor shooting. I'd lost nearly half my force before I inflicted my first casualty. After my leader was killed it all went to custard and the remnants of my raider crew scattered. Good fun though and we advanced our plans to put on a participation game at a small local convention in November.

Other gaming included a couple of games of checkers with Little Fish the Elder and some fun with Parade over one lunchtime.

The week of 31 July - 6 August:

Got Colt Express to the table after some hiatus, which was fun with four players. Spooky Stairs with the Flaschengeist expansion is quite fun, even for adults, especially if you use the option to switch your coloured disks as well as the pawns.

I had a trip to an Oxford games club's periodical open games days and had a good variety of play there, plus got a bit of additional play through the week, including a few bits of playtesting, so all good.

N/A   Unpublished Prototype x4 - All my games, including a couple of games pulled off the backburner to take a fresh look at.
9   Coloretto x2 - Back into the lunchtime mix, still one of my favourites.
8   Ticket to Ride - I really liked the fact that a few of us could just sit down and play this for an hour or so with no preamble or messing about; it has the familiarity of a light filler, but can still provide a reasonably crunchy experience.
N/A   Nothing To Declare - Fresh off the Kickstart boat, we decided that this isn't much good for two players, sadly, though previous experience has shown that it's fun with more.
8   JamSumo x2 - Flicking dice around the place, what's not to like?!
N/A   Ghostel - Good fun, actually the first time I've played the final version of the game.
8   Clans x2 - An oldie but goodie, great to get this back to the table.
8   Anachrony - My first 4-player play of Anachrony, with 2 newbs, this was a lot of fun and a pleasingly close result at the end.
N/A   Ray Master - Nice fun, with a bit of thinkiness and risk taking, plus a really cool, cardcraft raygun.
