. Since he hasn't posted the list for July yet - too busy? - I thought I would give it a try. I hope he doesn't mind.

This list is meant to be a concise perusal for those times we wish to browse for something new and don't have endless time to comb through the SGOYT list. Anyone can post an item but only one item.

Please share your experiences of the solitaire games you played for the first time this past month.

In order to assist with collecting Statistics from these lists, please post an entry with your chosen game of the month, and if possible please use the "insert board game" feature to add other games you mention in your entry.

Format is completely up to you but I reiterate the requirement of ONE GEEKLIST ITEM PER USER.

I backed the Zombicide: Green Horde kickstarter, so as a completionist, I also "needed" Black Plague. Found a Knight pledge on the market that wasn't too expensive (for some definition of "not expensive") and relatively local.

Enjoying the game since then. The first missions are a bit bland, but they seem to get more interesting over time. I think I also found a way to integrate all the expansions (most notably necromancers and abominations) without unbalancing the game.

Now I really look forward to Green Horde. Biggest challenge is to restrain from *also* getting Massive Darkness... whistle

Tiny Epic Galaxies: Beyond the Black arrived from Kickstarter, together with the base game. I'm enjoying it so far, especially as a travel game. Even playable on the train, if I get one of the bigger tables on the ICE.

I, like many recently, have gotten sucked in by this game. It was $21 shipped from book depository, so I took a chance on it. It's nice enough, and somewhat engaging, but ultimately a little too random and so is headed for the trade pile.

Robot Turtles was another new one last month (though not solo), and I found it fun, but my son didn't really. So, on we go to other games!

I supported this game on kickstarter with the thought of taking a step up from Warfighter. It looked similar but here I would command an army instead of a few soldiers. I was thrilled by it offering two kinds of gameplay - a "Battle Royal" - the classic "arena"-style with two sides fighting each other or different scenarios (several of them based on historical events) with different goals for victory.

Most important lesson learned: Don't expect this game to be realistic. It has a cartoon-look - see it like that and you'll enjoy it more. I found myself struggling with the "realism"-thought in the beginning but once I was able to let those thoughts go I felt it had a better flow.

The AI for solo-play has three different modes - defensive, offensive and dynamic. Scenarios often states a specific one to use and the "Battle Royal" is dynamic. There is a system for how the AI is supposed to act (what it wants to do) but in the end it falls down on you making the wiser choices for it. Given I'm kind of new to war games and to this game specifically I found it hard to know what was good choices to make (both for me and AI so at least I'm not outsmarted by a wiser AI ). I however felt the game was very unbalanced - a successful beginning ensured a certain win and it felt impossible to change that. I have heard others state the same but I don't know if it is true for the system or if it is just something happening the first times due to inexperience in how the system works.

thumbsup Most of what you need to know is on the cards - not a lot of references to the rulebook all the time which felt nice and ran smoothly. Like the cartoon art.

thumbsdown I felt the AI fell down to much on my choices (demands a clear head) and it feels like some bad luck in cards or dicethrows can decide the end long before the battle is over.

I'm not sure this one stays in my collection. I enjoyed Warfighter much more during my first few plays than I enjoyed this. So I think this is out in favour for upgrades to Warfighter.

I played an Era I game. I had a favorable impression of the thinky, puzzly nature of the hex tile mechanic, but I thought it really needed additional markers for the three places visited. Getting interrupted in the middle of performing the actions makes it hard to remember where the pawn has been, and since there are strict movement rules for the pawn, this is troublesome.

The storage mechanic is interesting, and the game has a nice feeling of advancement as it progresses. However, I was disappointed that the end of the Era has an incomplete feeling, when I had hoped that it would be completely modular as the game description states.

I was also disappointed that there are no specifically solitaire rules or scoring guide out of the box. Apparently there is a solitaire challenge available separately for download that I will have to try.

Only one new game for me from July, and boy was it a great one! I had waited a long time for D-Day at Omaha Beach to come back into print, and it was definitely worth the wait. The system is simply amazing! How the game handles the landings, the German fire phases, random events, really everything is fantastic, with its card led system. Every decision seems to matter in your quest for victory. I expect to be playing this one for years to come!
