The end of the world is coming, and suddenly you want to become a small, furry creature -- the strategy that would have got you stomped up until then. Lots of games have mechanisms to prevent players from changing to go-for-broke strategies.

Each game should represent a different mechanism; if you know of a game that duplicates a mechanism, please add a comment to the similar game item. Where appropriate, end of the round mechanisms can be discussed, too.

The game is over when a meteor strike kills all of the dinosaurs. The longer the games goes, the higher the probability that a die roll will end the game. Players that attempt an end-of-the-world strategy (and we always do) may find that there are still more turns to go (or that there isn't a next turn use for the strategy after all).

Another unpredictable dinosaur-killer. Most of the card backs are marked with a `1', but the ones with a `2' are at the bottom of the deck and one of them shows a meteor strike. (Cards depicted in the photo.) After this everyone gets a mini-turn, but without continental drift and only 2 action points you need to always be in a good position.

Two mechanisms complicate the endgame for each round. The game is a race, but the track may be lengthened as the game progresses. Points are scored by how much you are ahead of your opponent when you reach the end of your journey, but three points are also available for whoever places the most cards on the Magic Way -- neglecting this can reverse a victory.

Almost all of this game is the endgame. Only three points are needed to win and one or two points can be had in several of the auctions each turn. Normally several players are trying to manipulate and out-guess each other to get the win, and this goes on for many turns.

At the end of the first round of auctions, players could exhaust their money as it isn't useful for future auctions. Dorra's useful twist is to make the money part of the final scoring so that in all of the first-round auctions trade-offs must be considered (will getting the best house here allow me to get another $5 worth of cheques?).

Players may choose to stop playing whenever they feel that they can't make much of a difference anymore. The earlier that you drop out, the more victory points you are given as compensation.

The last player left with suns (bidding tokens) in each round can take as many tiles as he wishes. This is balanced by Ra tiles which force him to stop adding to the current lot of tiles and tiles with negative values. Ra tiles also force lots with bad tiles to be auctioned.

It's Mine doesn't have Ra tiles, but the increased number of negative tiles work, too.

The game ends when someone scores at least 100 points, but the bonus scoring of two hidden cards can make a dramatic difference. Keeping the secret goods at high scores for several rounds can be tricky.

The train is of variable length, as train cars are randomly drawn. It may be important to plan for the endgame here, but you won't know when it will actually happen. This makes most of the game a variable-length midgame.

Here you really want to get well ahead of other players early in the game. A festival (1 in 12 chance per turn) provides everyone with an extra turn's worth of income, hastening the end of the game. More importantly, one player will be getting two turns of income at the same time, possibly allowing that player to win even though you were in the lead for income by an entire turn.

If you are the last player left in a bidding round, you get everything left by the others. But there is only one card left to replenish your hand (after you've played at least two, usually) and there are few choices left for placing palaces. Players that didn't hold out to the end got more cards and better choices. A nice balance. At the very end of the game it is worthwhile to have many cards left in your hand for some final bonus points.

Early victory through getting a minimum number of cities keeps everyone on their toes. Not knowing when the next Muster, Supply or Clash of Kings will appear in decks with reshuffle cards prevents players from letting their situation weaken, as a momentary lapse could have consequences that last for the rest of the game.

Just when you think that all the failure cards have been spent, your master plan is foiled by a flurry of cards. The next player moves to take out Dr Lucky now that the failures are really gone, but little does he know what you've got in your hand.... Figuring out when to end the game is always interesting. The game consists of three days, each of which ends when a special card is drawn from the deck. On the first day it is in the bottom half of the deck, bottom third on the second and bottom quarter on the final day. Something of an advanced version of the Trias mechanism.
