Gen Con 2017 (aka Gen Con 50)! Great time, lessons learned!

Our Gen Con's are part convention, part vacation with friends. It will always be one of the highlights of my year.

Again this year earns a ? behind the title. It was more of a board game Gen Con than a RPG one.

I'm really bummed that we didn't get a picture of the group.

The crew was Joe, Steve, Smooth, and Gary. Joe and Smooth are locals. Gary came from Texas while Steve and I made the short trip from the Cincy area.

Joe is a hardcore board gamer; Steve is more on the RPG side; I do both types of games; Smooth and Gary are casual gamers.

Edit: I forgot I had taken this picture at Lucas Oil. Gary, Joe, and Smooth left to right.

This is a standard part of my reports now:

I love Indianapolis. They have embraced Gen Con. We attended two cons in Milwaukee, and it always seemed to us that they wished it would leave. Huh.

The media coverage is fantastic. The local businesses all cater to the con goers. They simply love our money, and we hear all the time that this is their favorite convention.

Every year there's a hue and cry that Gen Con needs to move from Indy after the contract expires in 2021. I know the Con has grown huge and even sold-out this year, but I think that's at least partly because of the location. I think it's a perfect storm.

For the fourth time we stayed at the JW. I really dig it. The staff, the location, and the lobby bar/sports bar are all great. There's even a decent table in the room that can be used for gaming (although seating is an issue).

At this point, it will be hard if we don't get a JW room in the room lottery. Going back to commuting to the con each day would take some of the bloom off the rose. Realistically, though, it's definitely going to happen.

Here's the food report:

Thunderbird - Ubered there; small menu. Didn't do much for me. thumbsupthumbsdown
The Eagle - Love this place. Corn Nuts! thumbsup
Santorini - The portions are ridiculous. Seriously, if I leave my plate half uneaten, you need to rethink things. Calamari and - of all things - the gyro meat were easily the standouts. thumbsupthumbsdown
St. Elmo's - Look, it's fantastic. I just think the bill and "been here, done that" is having an impact on my desire to return. thumbsup
Tavern on South - No. Don't. thumbsdownthumbsdownthumbsdown

I ate one lunch at High Velocity at the JW.

No foodtrucks. The line at the JW Starbucks was never small enough for me to enter. This isn't the first time you'll hear that the "Bru don't queue."

On Wednesday we drank at quite a few places. Really, we pub crawled I guess. There wasn't a single place that I'd want to revisit.

I only had one drink at the JW Bar. That was great for the wallet. Unfortunately the drink was an Islay Daquiri (rum, lime, and Laphroaig); three things I like mixed together to make something not very good.

We brought stuff from home to decrease our bar bill. I brought vodka tonics. Unfortunately a large vt on Saturday on an empty stomach was the worst idea of the con. Sigh.

Geez. Or is that Geeze?

I was not in shape for Gen Con. Normally I walk/hike regularly, but I haven't done much in 2017. My back, legs, shoulders were all hurting. I wasn't the only one.

Also our LONG day on Wednesday was a mistake for me. I was exhausted and got grumpy in the crush on Thursday morning in the Exhibit Hall. It was better after I bailed and took a break. During my second break, I fell asleep for two hours. I took a freakin' nap the first afternoon of Gen Con.

So, lessons from the Exhibit Hall 2017.

From 10:00 to 12:30 on Thursday, the Hall was a crowded mess. I was really worried about the crowds at that point. After 12:30, crowds left and it was fine. Friday was good... Saturday and Sunday (early) were manageable.

Next year, I target the Hall at 12:30 on Thursday. Maybe I'll schedule an event.

The Hall is crazy bananas. So much stuff, such a spectacle, I love it.

I do have gripes. The flow to the Hall is always terrible with huge multi-aisle booths causing log jams and hiding smaller booths. Booths with aisle facing content should be banned, banned I say! I saw more people using the garbage cans as make-shift tables this year. It's a garbage can! I saw way more rolling suitcases/backpacks this year; pure evil. Finally, there were more groups sitting in the middle of aisles/intersections. No excuse. All of this could be fixed... but I doubt it will happen.

My Thursday wasn't awesome for quite a few reasons. One is because of the things that didn't make the show like I thought they would.

As mentioned above, Tales from the Loop didn't make Gen Con (or was sold out ). I did get to flip through it at the ENnies booth, and it looks fun.

Also, at the Modiphius Entertainment booth, there was no Robert E. Howard's Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of presence. Nothing. Nada. Zero.

Gloomhaven had a tiny space that was always packed. I never got a chance to do more than view from 6 feet away.

Thunderstone Quest wasn't demoed at the booth. I only found this out later on Saturday and didn't make it to the demo spot.

The Witcher CRPG had a one page flyer that didn't leave me wanting more.

Blood Bowl 2016 had a good showing in the Miniature Market booth, but I wanted to see it displayed. I tracked down the tournament which was using 2016 rules (at least, that's what it said), but everyone was using the smaller pre-2016 pitches.

I walked around the Onyx Path booth twice looking for Nocturnal Media. I finally noticed a dude standing beside the smallest table I've ever seen in the Hall that had a few (a literal few) of their products.

I picked up some Gen Con 50 dice.

I also picked up a full set from Chessex. I like ugly dice, and I've had a 50/50 reaction to them.

I like getting ugly dice to tweak my buddy Joe. BTW, Joe paid $286 for some dice and a box to hold them. $286. Wow.

This was an impulse buy. It was 25% off, and I liked the thought of a silly, fun flicking game.

I'm really gravitating to light games at the moment. Not sure if it's a thing or just where I'm at.

I didn't get a chance to play at Gen Con.

I always want to buy at least one RPG at Gen Con. This was the RPG this year.

I would not have predicted this.

I was battling between Tales from the Loop, Symbaroum Core Rulebook (which my buddy Steve bought on Sunday), and Bubblegumshoe. One issue was that Tales from the Loop wasn't available at the show due to a customs issue; it wasn't on their product list.

Not available = sold out? Ah, marketing!

I was going to leave without an RPG.

Then I saw Sagaborn, and it was a great price. It was a no-brainer.

Friday morning, Steve, 698 of my closest friends, and I attended the FFG seminar. I won't do it again.

Remember, the Bru don't queue. We showed up 20 minutes early and stood in line until 25 minutes after it was supposed to start.

Now, I'll give props to FFG. It was a slick presentation. For me, the problem was that I knew 90% of the stuff they announced. The other 10% I could have found out an hour (or less) after the seminar ended.

My one takeaway is that Legacy of Dragonholt is on my radar. It might be something.

I was toast by this point in the night and didn't think I had one of Joe's typical heavier games in me. Luckily, this wasn't heavy at all. It's a pretty interesting trick taking game. I would definitely play this again. I like Tournament of Camelot more which implements theme much better.

Hey! We all like trick taking games! Who knew?

For me, the highlight of Gen Con 50 was the museum they created in Lucas Oil Stadium. William Meinhardt conducted the tour which lasted about 45 minutes.

We picked this tour due to the time (Saturday afternoon). I had seen Meinhardt's name here and there but didn't really know him. Well, he considers himself the conservator of fantasy RPGs. He claims to own a copy of almost every fantasy RPG ever created. One goes into plastic for preservation. The other is a personal copy for reading/playing.

LIGHTBULB.

In 1993 when Steve, Joe, and I attended Gen Con in a booth selling Steve's Shades of Fantasy, a dude came to the booth claiming to own a copy of every... Holy cats! That was none other than William Meinhardt.

He had some great stories. There were some great artifacts. Gary Adkison (Peter's Dad) held court at the Magic display. Good times. It would be great if they could do that every year.

These are the things that I saw that I'll carry forward...

Bubblegumshoe (again) and Tales from the Loop as above...

Legacy of Dragonholt as above...

Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure carries forward from last year.

This one is a bit of a mystery. While leaving the Hall on Saturday, I caught Fable's End out of the corner of my eye. It looked like a two player card game with nice art. I took their card. I found their sparse page on FaceBook; it's based on the Fable video game franchise. And that's what I've found out about the game. No entry on BGG. They were selling product... Hrm.

On Thursday, one of the first things I saw was Time of Legends: Joan of Arc. It's a 2-4 player wargame, history but with fantasy elements, but it's played... Nevermind, just look at this:

I hope All Rolled Up returns in the future. I stopped at the booth several times but could never get close enough to ask questions. Glad they were busy.

Last is the combo dice tower, dice box from Elderwood Academy. Maybe next year I'll take the plunge.

Having failed two death checks and not wanting to do a third, it was time to head home. I was ready.

Can't wait for next year... August 2-5. Not even a year away.

A couple of years ago, [name redacted] posted this thread. At various time since, I've thought much about it. At other times I thought screw that, I'm buying everything.

I'm going trough one of those "thinking about it" cycles.

It started prior to Gen Con as I kept knocking things off my initial list of things to check out at Gen Con. I didn't realize it at the time. I was doing the same thing at Gen Con. I could have bought more stuff, but it would have just felt like buying more stuff.

I also have three Kickstarter RPGs (not including Far West - haha) that are coming my way and one pre-ordered board game.

Today I came up with a simple plan. For every three RPG items I read, I can add something new to the reading pile. For every three board games I play to "I'm done", I can add something new. Both of these are harder for me than it looks on the surface. I haven't done much RPG reading the last several years, and our group tends to be "cult of the new." We have so many games we really enjoyed that we've only played once.

Perhaps more than consumerism, this is more about going to my collection and actually doing something with it. The goal is to be able to look at Gen Con 2018 with some fresh eyes and have some openings on my shelf.
