Woot woot Gen Con 2017! Celebrating 9 years of Gen Con!

I love Gen Con. There's so much to see and do. I was NEVER bored. There was always a game or a friend or a puzzle waiting for me. Sometimes food and sleep too.

Wednesday:

Even after sleeping in til 1:00 p.m. and waiting in line for Will Call and Customer Service, no members of my party had yet arrived. So I went in search for something to do.

My search led me to my friend Josh in the CGE room. I spent the next hour or so helping set up tables, displays, and games, and engaging in a fascinating conversation with Petr from the Czech Republic about what life was like in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s under Communist rule.

As a thank you, Josh gifted me with a copy of Codenames Duet, which we had played together at BGG.CON Spring earlier this year and I had really enjoyed. Thank you Josh

Eric, Ryan, Amy, Adam, and Allen all then arrived, so I went back downstairs to greet them and meet their friend Chris Pratt, who was wearing a costume shirt that said something like "This is a Chris Pratt costume"

Eric, Ryan, Amy, Adam and Chris Pratt had an RPG session scheduled, so since it was just me & Allen, Codenames Duet ended up being the first game I played at Gen Con!

Game 1: 9-9 Prague, and we won on the last turn.

Game 2: 9-5 Moscow, and we lost due to Allen hitting one of my death words when I got overambitious with a Vladimir Putin clue. Wop wop.

I truly love Codenames and am excited to continue to play this 2 player version.

Wednesday:

LJ organized a group dinner for the BGG Werewolf & Boomer community, so that was my next stop, with Allen alongside.

Afterwards we all headed back to the convention center for more games. Game #1 was Not Alone, with LJ as the planet versus me, Brianyay, Eddy, Chris, Erin, and Chrono.

Concept: 5 locations are available at the beginning. Players secretly choose locations to visit in order to use the location's availability. The planet also secretly chooses a location. If the planet chooses the same location as any player, then the planet gets to take away life points from the caught player/s. Every round the players' counter moves closer to the finish line, and with every life point taken away the planet's counter moves closer to the finish line. First team to move their counter to the finish line wins.

LJ ate my face so many times. So many. Brianyay did his best to save the day, but Planet LJ prevailed and sucked out all of our souls.

I don't know if I'd buy this game, as the strategy isn't all there (it felt like you just kinda put a location down and hope for the best, since players can't strategize in private), but I enjoyed playing.

I inspired everyone to try the puzzle in the book:

Players: Me, LJ, Brianyay, Eddy, Chris, Chrono, Erin, and CrimsonFox.

Erin died when she lost on a #yolo play

Chris died when LJ correctly identified his crime

Crimson won on a #yolo play on Chrono

Zach and Emily arrived and came over to the area where we were gaming. Someone had already suggested Ethnos by this point, and Zach had it on his want-to-try list, so Zach, Emily, Chris, Curt, Erin, and I settled in for a 6 player game.

Concept: Players collect cards from 6 different races, each of which have a special ability when activated. Cards also have a color that corresponds to 1 of the 6 different territories on the board. Players use either color sets or race sets and activate the ability of the last race card played. Points are given for area control and various other tracks (depending on which races are in the game - there's a whole slew to choose from). Whoever has the most points by the end of 3 rounds wins.

I crushed! Woo hoo! Liked this game (I generally love area control); would consider buying.

Allen returned to the area just after the game started, so he joined Erin, Irina, Brianyay, Eddy, and LJ for games of Not Alone, Don't Mess with Cthulhu and Leaders of Euphoria.

PARTY BOAT!

I love this press-your-luck / bluffing game.

Brianyay: "WHAT? ARE YOU PLAYING CELESTIA WITHOUT ME?"
Me: "No."
Brianyay: "Oh my god. Yes you are!"
Me: "No, no, we're not."
Brianyay: "I can't believe you're playing without me!"
Me: "We're not! I swear."
Brianyay: "YOU'RE SETTING IT UP NOW ON THE TABLE!"

Me, Zach, Emily, Curt, Erin, Chris.

Curt totally crushed - I think he had like, 70 points because he went into the final round with nearly 50 and then got a 20 point card?

Werewolf with David Meredith!

Roleset included Huntress and Inventor (playtested - 2 tokens are passed every night, and if the Inventor ever has both tokens, a Wolf's card is flipped over).

Wolves: Anthony's daughter (caught round 2 when she didn't pass the inventor token to the Inventor), Carrot Top (detected by me), and Jeremy (who I suspected was a Wolf based on his tell, but he was defending me all game after I defended Anthony's daughter, so I didn't go after him). Village won.

I played a 1 round demo of Harvest Dice at the Grey Fox Games booth.

My first stop was Grey Fox Games so I could give a hug to Josh L., but since he wasn't around, I played 1 round of Harvest Dice.

Concept: You have a board that's 3 x 6. A bunch of dice are rolled and drafted. Dice are either red (tomatoes), yellow (carrots), or green (lettuce). You can only have 1 tomato patch, 1 carrot patch, and 1 lettuce patch in your field - like must be placed next to like. Column 1 can only contain dice with 1 pip, column 2 can only contain dice with 2 pips, etc. So you have to choose your dice wisely. You have a few other options for dice that you draft that don't fit anywhere, but the field is the meat and potatoes of the game.

Harvest Dice was okay as a filler or kids' activity, but I don't think I'm going to buy it. Not complex enough for my tastes.

My next stop was the Tuesday Knight Games booth to say hi to Alan & Sean. I found Alan, Justin, and Chelsea at the booth and gave hugs.

The TKG booth was right across from the Exploding Kittens booth. They had a shtick where you could pay $2 and get a random item. Chelsea ended up with a 4-pack of toilet paper. Someone else got an ear of corn. I saw an onion at one point. One BGG Geeklister reported receiving a coconut. The line was really long. I wish I was popular enough to pull off a gimmick like that - $2 / attendee x lots and lots of attendees = $$$

I also ran into Ian, a friend from BGG.CON Spring and Origins, at the Queen Games booth.

Text from Ian later: "You are doing cons wrong FYI. Showing up at 2."

My reply: "Hahaha I am not surprised you'd say that. You've seen my Geeklists though. I think I do cons right "

Ian: "Debatable"

I played 1 full game at the Overworld Games booth.

Much to my surprise, Allen was working at the Overworld Games booth, so I stopped in for a game. Played with the demoer (not Allen) and 2 strangers.

Concept: Common play area has cards in the 4 suits + wilds. Cards range in value from 1 - 3. Object is first to use your personal stash and common play area to get a set of cards in 1 suit worth 5 points. Then you try to collect cards for 6 points. Etc. Every set gets you 2 rube meeples. First to collect 13 meeples wins. Card sets allow you to add special abilities to your tableau that make collecting cards and rube meeples easier in the future.

Hard pass on this one. I didn't think this game allowed for much strategy. You pretty much play to your hand.

I played a 10-round game in the Massif Games booth.

Wow, is this game eye-catching. The prototype in the booth featured a 2-foot tall 3D mountain (pyramid-shaped) with holes punched out in tiers. Didn't know what it was, but wanted to play.

Concept: Players are given 4 hidden agendas worth points at the end of the game if you can fulfill them. My agendas that I completed, for example, were to reach the highest point on the mountain, have have 12 climbing points in a row all below 4,000 feet, and have 10 climbing points in a row that go only sideways or downhill on snow & ice terrain only. Income is collected during the game and can be spent on movement and purchasing special abilities.

This game was probably the most memorable for me in terms of all-around experience. I played with 2 strangers who I thought were dating from the way they were interacting, but nope, turns out they had never met before. I did end up kicking off a long series of running jokes about the sexual tension between them, which was made even funnier by the fact that the woman had just purchased a copy of the Kama Sutra board game and the guy had just purchased a dirty adults-only expansion to some card game (don't remember the title).

I was swimming in money all game due to wise income management and my character's special ability. Running joke there was that I self-proclaimed my character to be a "rich bitch" and I frequently taunted the other players for being paupers. Totally won in the end due to my smart peg management and special ability choices that best fit my agendas.

I liked. Would consider backing the Kickstarter when it launches.

By this point Zach and Emily had finished their ticketed session of Wasteland Express Delivery Service, so I caught up with them in the Exhibitors Hall.

Concept: Try to create the best 5 card poker hand; use cards with special abilities to mess with others' hands.

I really didn't like this game, but I am also not a fan of poker. I didn't think the choices were interesting enough and it didn't keep my attention. Pass.

I played 2 rounds in the Lone Shark Games booth with Zach and Emily.

The Lone Shark Games booth usually has a puzzle in it, so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone by both playing a game and checking out the puzzle.

Concept: You have 5 cards in your hand (one for each of the 5 actions) and you use these cards in silent auctions to either claim dibs on a monster to fight, fight a monster, or upgrade your cards (the cards start out at value 1 and can be promoted to 3). Whoever gets the most points - typically by fighting monsters? - wins. Alternatively this game can be played as a co-op.

I'm a huge, huge fan of Lone Shark Games' Puzzle Hunt, but this game was a pass for me. The choices didn't feel interesting and the theme completely went over my head.

I played 3 games in the Rio Grande room with Zach, Emily, and Ted

Concept: Cards in hand are either planets to build or money to pay for building planets. On your turn you either draw cards or select 1 or 2 cards to build. If you build just 1 diamond planet in the turn, the card's cost is reduced by 1. If you build just 1 circle planet in the turn, you draw a card after building. Planets have abilities that let you either draw more cards or collect points. At the end of your turn you collect whatever cards and points your planets bestow upon you. Once someone has 12 buildings, whoever has the most points wins.

Most of the games I wanted to try were at occupied tables, but Jump Drive was free. I had no idea what this game was getting into it. The volunteers handed us off to Ted D., who wasn't volunteering in that particular shift but really likes the game.

Much to my surprise, I liked this game. I say surprise because I don't really like Race for the Galaxy or its iconography at all. Zach and Emily had never played RFTG before, but they caught on pretty quickly to this streamlined version, and we liked it so much we ended up playing 3 times (and Zach listed this game as his 2nd favorite of the con).

1st: I won

2nd: Ted won

3rd: I won (in just 6 turns)

Would consider buying as a filler.

Zach, Emily, and I hit up the Food Trucks for dinner, and FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER at Indy I was able to order AND get my food in less than 10 minutes! Unprecedented! And the food (tacos) was good! Thank you Chomp'z!

We had tickets for the BGG Hot Games room, so we hit that up next.

The BGG Hot Games room doesn't have teachers, and there weren't any Players Wanted or Teachers Wanted flags this year, so you were pretty much on your own. I knew how to teach Century: Spice Road from my plays at Origins, so I chose to teach this one to Zach & Emily since it's a good game and Zach had it on his wishlist.

Concept: This game reminded me a lot of Sid Sackson's classic game Bazaar where you attempt to transform colored cubes into certain color combinations in order to fulfill contracts for points.

This game was better than Bazaar though. In Bazaar, you either exchange a stone for a predetermined payout available to everyone (like 2 whites and 2 reds for 2 yellows and 1 blue) or you roll a die and take the stone featured on it.

There are no dice in Century: Spice Road. And the exchange ratios are available only to the player who buys the card with the ratio printed on it. On your turn you can either fulfill a contract by playing the appropriate colored stones, pick up your hand of cards, go shopping for a card with an exchange ratio, or play a card and make the exchange. That makes much more sense to me than Bazaar.

I won. Zach and Emily liked this game so much that they bought both the game and the playmat the next day (Zach listed it as his 6th favorite game of the con).

I enjoyed this game. Would buy it (and ditch my copy of Bazaar).

Next up: Zach wanted to play Terraforming Mars, which I also knew thanks to BGG CabinCon, PLUS IT'S AN AMAZING GAME AND I LOVE IT so we put it on the table.

We were joined by Gen Con first-timers Josh and Justin, and Justin helped me with the parts of the rules that I forgot.

I swear, literally every single time I was in the BGG Hot Games room, I was either playing Terraforming Mars or sitting right next to someone who was. This game was EVERYWHERE all week. And rightfully so.

I didn't have much of a strategy all game beyond "create heat and bump up the heat track" and meandered my way to 2nd place. Zach took first, and both he and Emily listed this game in their top 2 of games played during Gen Con.

I'm totally buying soon. Pretty sure Zach and Emily will too, if they haven't already.

Then it was time for puzzle solving and bed!

I played a full game at the Genius Games booth in the Exhibitor Hall

Met up with Brianyay when I woke up on Friday (afternoon, of course). He's training now to be a paramedic and was all like "Ooooh" when he saw the cell biology-themed board.

Concept: This game is kind of like Lords of Waterdeep - you place meeples to collect resources to fulfill conditions on cards that get you points. Instead of DnD quests, you're creating enzymes, hormones, and receptors. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins.

I've had lots of experience with worker placement games, whereas Brianyay hasn't, so I beat him handily despite his trash talk (which I loved). It would have been nice to have this kind of game when I was in biology since I never did quite figure out how cells work. But I'm not in biology anymore and I like Lords of Waterdeep better - the choices of Cytosis are less compelling since the board remains static. Pass.

I played 2 rounds in the Greenbrier Games booth with Brianyay

Brianyay and I continued to wander around the Hall in search of a game, and we landed at the demo copy of Helios Expanse.

Concept: Players go around in a circle programming 1 card per turn until each player programs 5 cards. Then the actions are initiated. Actions include moving, advancing on the technology or weapons tracks, bumping other players, and dropping a colony down on an uncolonized planet. Whoever colonizes the most planets at the end of the game wins.

We had the option of playing longer because no one was waiting, but I was not interested. Move, drop something off, advance on a track ... meh. Not exciting enough. I'd rather play something like Xia or Merchant of Venus, where there are lots of exciting options and choices before you. Pass.

I played a full game at the Asmodee booth with Brianyay.

For context, I tried the Inka & Marcus Brand's Exit series and HATED it. I thought the puzzles were beyond awful and the quality was so low. I love puzzles, but the Exit experience left me so turned off to the idea of escape room boxes.

Brianyay had tried the Unlock! series though and swore it was a good experience. So I agreed to play this game, which was a 15 minute Exit Room scenario specifically designed for conventions.

The scenario was definitely on the easy side of the difficulty scale, but I liked it because it provided a good introduction to the rules and the system and the group (me, Brianyay, 3 strangers) were all able to work together for the first time to solve the scenario before the end of the 15 minutes.

Yhe demoer saw how much our group of 5 enjoyed the 5th Avenue set, so he loaded up another adventure for us to enjoy.

The puzzles in this 22-card mini game were harder than 5th Avenue, but that made it more enjoyable. I enjoyed tackling the more difficult puzzles and coming up with the answers. The puzzles made sense. The artwork was great. The graphics design was clear and attractive. Overall a great experience. We won with 5 minutes left on the clock.

I played 2 rounds at the North Star Games booth with Brianyay

Concept: Players pair off and flip a card. You have to yell out a word that begins with the same letter as the image depicted on the card before your opponent can correctly name something (for example if a Queen is revealed, you could yell out "question"). A round consists of a player facing off against every other player.

CRUSHED IT. Brianyay, I'm going to beat you to the punch in everything! Mwahahaha!

I liked this game. But it was very similar to Anomia, which I already own.

Brianyay had never played Happy Salmon, and I LOVE Happy Salmon, so I pulled him and 4 passers-by in for a game.

Concept: Happy Salmon is a yelling game where you have a hand of cards that you must carry out, and the first person to ditch all of their cards wins. Ditching cards consists of finding people who also have cards instructing them to fist bump, perform the Happy Salmon action, etc.

HAPPY SALMON HAPPY SALMON! HIGH FIVE!

I totally won. But to be fair I was the only one who had played before. I made sure to switcheroo with only neighbors.

Brianyay liked I already own.

I played a few rounds at the Spiel des Jahres booth with Brianyay

Concept: Ice Cool is a VERY fun dexterity flicking game in which every round 1 player is the Evil Penguin Overlord trying to flick his penguin into the other players' penguin tokens, while the other players try to pass through marked doorways to collect points. There are youtube videos of people making trick shots and it makes me want to become really good at this game

Ice Cool was my favorite of the Kinderspiel nominees, so when I saw it out for demo at the Spiel des Jahres booth, I pulled Brianyay in. We played a few rounds with both of us as the Evil Penguin Overlord at some point. Despite all of my accumulated experience (I've played twice, haha) he outflicked me and would've outearned me in points had we been keeping track

He liked. I want to buy at some point.

I played one full game at the Calliope Games booth with Brianyay

Concept: Players have 4 workers. Every round they can send their workers to collect coins (1/worker), buy a single card from a food stand (there are 3 - one for veggies, one for meat, one for dessert), or control a food stand (you can't purchase from the stand at all that round but you do get the money that others spend at your stand). Food items are used to fulfill contract cards (some are public, some are private). Points are awarded for fulfilling contract cards. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.

The bidding mechanism in this game is Speicherstadt/Jorvik-esque, where the first person to buy counts up all meeples at the stand and the cost of 1 item equals the number of meeples at the stand. So if there's 4 workers, the first worker can buy something for 4 bucks, then the next worker can buy something for 3 bucks, etc.

This was a fun and cute little game with a great theme. Who doesn't like food? Brianyay's first private goal was salad and ice-cream, and he laughed when he got his card. He was like "This is my favorite meal". We tied and shared the win.

I think Menu Masters was a little too simple for me, so I personally will pass, but I think it is a great gateway into other auction games and I think kids and new gamers will love it.

I played one round at Indie Board and Cards with Brianyay and Toni

Concept: The objective is to accumulate as few points as possible. There are 10 suits with different point values depending on how many cards of that suit you collect. Each suit also activates a special ability when played. Suits can be used to attack other players and/or to defend against others' attacks, depending on the special ability.

Witching Hour was open, and Toni Alspach of Bezier Games, who I adore, was sitting there, so Brianyay and I sat down for a game. Toni won.

Not my kind of game. Didn't enjoy. I really don't like Tichu-esque kind of games where you're pretty much stuck with whatever's in your hand. Total pass for me. The demoer seemed really into the game - he and his fellow booth workers seemed to have a lot of fun finding cool combinations with the cards.
