Hey howdy hey! This was my 14th GEN CON and boy oh boy, it was smashing! I loved it a bunch. It was a crazy zoo of people - but cool people! I don't recall any problems at all beyond bumping into folks fairly often in the Exhibit Hall which I drained over a period of 4 days.

I also had several brush with greatness moments: Eric Lang (saw him), Ignacy (saw him), Bruno Cathala (thanked him - awesome!), Tom Vasel (talking very nicely to folks at the booth), Stephen Buonocore (bought a game from him), and bunches of other people (saw them all). That's an amazing part of THE KHAN - the people! It was in every conceivable way a huge crowd of geekery! Loved it!

Anyhow, if you don't read my blog (for shame!), I had posted my GEN CON review of all the games I was seeking. I seek I did! But only with a certain amount of good fortune, but smothered in serendipity! Yes, I bought a crap ton of games. I'm nuts! Net reduction in my collection, however - I sold a crap ton more games in the auction (total value TBD as I await my check that's surely in the mail).

Alright then! Enough of the preamble! On with the cavalcade of games!

I have to say I very much respect Mr. Lang. His designs - while not always in my wheelhouse - are in my experience always a delightful design. Smart, sassy, sizzly (is that a word?) and satisfying. This one - no exception whatsoever. I of course was completely clobbered. At first I thought, well, I'm in the last chair the first round in an area control game - that will sting. But it wasn't about that. It was all about my slowness in picking up on where to put things to get things to get other things so I get the main thing. You know, the thing! All stuffed in my really cool suitcase - which as it turns out, has very practical use.

I got smashed - but so did everyone else! Jeremy ran away with it - I mean completely crushed us all. I was dead last. But as an enduring example of excellence: I really liked the game. It was very fun to play and I felt it was in fact quite thematic. Not in a smash and grab way, not in a shoot em all 'til they are good and dead way, but in a this game feels like I'm taking over the joints. And making good on it. I'd play it - heck, I'd buy it if it weren't for the (cough) $80 USD price tag. Yeaagghhh. Can't bring myself to pay that just yet. Need more time to think it over.

Maybe someone will make me an offer I can't refuse, eh?

Ethnos! When it arrived on the gaming scene in the last few months, I was surprised by the reaction (not really expecting anything) which was at least in my viewings resoundingly positive. I was eyeing it in my mind's eye, so when Dave K said do you want to play, I was eager to do so. Yes, please!

We played a 5 player game - easily fits 5 by the way which is a nice feature. We played with wizards, and minotaurs, and dwarves and oh I dunno - other fantasy trope type figures. Represented in cards. Did I mention I'm color-blind? I am. And these cards - which generally nicely done - have this orange and green that just baffles me. I asked (lamely) during play more than once which placement spot was green and which was grey. Yeah, I can't tell! But once I have it memorized, I'm generally good to go. More on color-blind me below, but suffice to say, it didn't hamper my enjoyment at all. Again, no win for me - but no matter! My daughter Megan and I (and I assume Anna and Phil and Dave - hey guys!) had a very fun time with it. So fun that we sought it out at GEN CON and snagged a copy. With the bonus (!) Fairy deck. Yea for us! High five!

This game really felt like Small World to me, but even more streamlined and easy to punch through. Turns go nearly TOO fast - sometimes reducing to just pull a card blind and get that turn around the table. And the combo of replays - astounding! Some of the races are very different I think. Over all, big hit, very fun, all the reports are true - I recommend it to anyone who likes to play games. That would be me too.

I've got a new game mechanic: Social Deception. That explains these types of games better than the soft-peddled Social Deduction moniker. It's Deception, folks! And me, I don't like 'em. Nope. Not normally. There are a few exceptions - I for some reason enjoy Coup and have played (and will retain in my collection because so many others enjoy it) Sheriff of Nottingham (see below on my expansion snag). But in general, these games just feel like I'm lying. I'm no good at it, I don't want to get good at it, and I don't like it.

But! This one isn't too bad. I still feel like the close the eyes thing is dumb and so often used. Close your eyes. Open your eyes. Peek-a-boo! Sigh. But this one works with a clever way to pass a word (or phrase?) to a two folks: the in-the-know person and the I-need-to-Deceive person. And that's the way it works. Ask questions of the in-the-know person and they answer yes, no, or I dunno. The Deceiver has to make believe that they don't know - which is surprisingly hard to do! I feel so bad and again, I'm no good at it. You can't help but ask questions that are too smart! I was discovered.

So a nice, tight, brief (!) Social Deception game. Not bad. But no, I don't need it.

Speaking of which, and since I'm shilling for a moment, my new game Deadline was for sale a THE KHAN. And it did quite well! We got some great news on it from WizKids and things are looking up. Rahdo posted his review just in time - and he liked it too. That's all great!

I'm such a Diva. I think I walked by the WizKids booth more times than I should have just to see what was happening. Diva.

I've played it a bunch with a very broad set of gamers - which was the goal here: *broad* market game. Gateway game. The hardest game to make I believe. Non-gamers like it more than gamers. Let's bring in more gamers! I hope it finds its market!

Yeah, I'm a Diva.

I nearly forgot! I had a chance to play a demo of this game. It took only 10 minutes! The conceit here is each of your units is a stack of poker-type chips on a post. When you move them or do anything with them, you plop a timer next to the unit. And then you can instantly - this is a *real-time* game - play another unit. And so on - with your opponent doing the same! Real-time! There is only a slight delay when both of you are waiting (anxiously) for one of your timers to run down so you can attack or move again. It really is fast and clever in how it works. Good production too! Plays in 10 minutes!

No, I didn't play this one. I played a card game version of this one! It's my new design. I've passed it around to several testers - I'm getting very useful feedback. This was played twice at THE KHAN and both times it ran pretty well. Still more tweaks to do on card values and cost (and some iconography definitely needs fixing). Maybe some tweaks on how the game ends (it can lock up a bit towards the end which I don't like). But I like this one, I have fun playing it and am having fun with it. Nearly there!

Pitched it to a publisher. They liked it enough to take a copy for testing. So maybe it'll all work out and I'll have another game out next year.

Ok! Let's move into the Bum's Rush games. Those are the games I was actively trying to buy.

First up is this gem of a game about germs! The line was not that bad, the supplies were pretty good - I snapped up a copy. Probably one of the games I'm now most looking forward to playing - so I hope to get it to the table soon. It looks fabulous! And the Arcane Wonders booth was very efficient. Well done!

While I was in line for Viral, I snagged this one too. Interestingly, there was a special deal if you got this with Viral, you could get another game for I think $20? But I already have Royals which I really like and the other choice was a party game which I just didn't want to pay $20 for - and then I *nearly* did, but then no, I did not. But I *really* thought any game might be worth $20. And then I didn't get it. But I thought, why not? But then didn't.

The line was kinda long.

This was the game I literally RUSHED to Thursday morning. I wasn't quite optimally placed at the opening bell, so it took about 30-45 seconds to get to the booth. But I was there very early! I stepped up to the booth, was instructed to stand in line (which I dutifully did) and the Renegade person would bring me a game. Which they absolutely did not do. Instead, there was bedlam at the booth - folks who 'broke' the rule of waiting got the games. Those who stood by calmly got zip. It was frustrating, but in the end, not a big deal. The game looks fun, but after reading the rules (released just before the CON began), I became less thrilled with it. I'd like to see a play-thru video at this point. So kind of a bummer not to get it, but ok too.

I could have easily gotten a Clank! In! Space! - there was a much bigger supply of that game. Even though I consider myself a huge Clank fan (played it *many* times), I found myself not wanting this new Clank for some reason. It felt like it would boot the old Clank out of my collection. That didn't sit well with me I guess?

My daughter broke away Thursday to make a RUSH for this one. Success! It sold out too, so it was a nice catch. Haven't played it yet - but hoping it is my new Clank game this year (yes, yes, I know I'm a bundle of contradictions). I think my wife will like this one quite a bit as she is a huge fan of Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure. I think that means there's a very good chance she'll enjoy the deck building here as it has purpose for moving along the Quest for El Dorado!

I watched a Game Night play of this and it looked really, really fun.

Ok, things are getting out of order now. But before I forget, my wife was in the Clank tournament at THE KHAN! It was one of those where they are running tables of the game and recording the winner's score for a grand prize (which I think was a large wooden dragon trophy - looked sweet!).

But if you've played Clank, let me tell you, the end game scores vary widely based on the players. You see, one can play this where you just rush down, grab some valuable stuff and rush back out - driving everyone else to rush as well. And that's what happened to my wife's game. She ended with a pretty lousy 71 points - enough to win the game, but putting her woefully below the likely tournament winner's score of 147 (a score that is incredibly high).

But winning one game was enough to get you in the running for a golden dragon - which my wife did win! It is her grand prize - properly ensconced atop our mantel in a place of pride and prominence. She was smiling ear to ear that day. Wonderful!

I had heard from a reliable source that this one would be available at THE KHAN. But alas, it was not to be. It's another Lang joint and one that has a tremendously fun theme and likely tremendously fun components - given it's a Space Cowboys production.

It's an Aw Shucks for me - because I would have bought it in the RUSH for sure. But it's just as well - had some funds left for other games (like I was budgeting myself or something - NOT!).

Speaking of game I couldn't get, this one had only 100 copies total at THE KHAN. Now honestly, that seems like too few, right? But I asked Zev and he said he air shipped this number in and had to place that order many weeks before he knew what to expect. These things are just logistically harder than you think in the end. Obviously publishers would love to sell you a game, but if they can't get the supply in time, that's just how it is.

This game sounds like it has a great design behind it. I'm not a fan of the show (I watched the first season, but it was a struggle at times). I'm not a fan of the books (I read the first one, but it was a struggle at times). But honestly, I like and admire Geoff Engelstein. He seems generally like a fine chap, I've spoken to him once or twice over the years. This design was on a tight schedule too I heard, so well done in getting something this smart put together on a time crunch. Well done indeed! I can't seem to get a design done faster than a few years.

I was recommended this game by Dave K (hello again, Dave!) and it is a fine simple affair. My wife and I played the 7x7 variant and enjoyed it well enough. Again, fine design. It might play better with 3-4 players? Seems quite possible. I like the breezy nature of it - and as said above, these 'easy' game are for me the most difficult to design. You can't have any fat around the edges - it has to be smooth. Bruno knows his way around a great design and this one gets it done. Pretty too - fun loving is how I would describe it. Anyone who enjoys dominoes would very likely enjoy this one. I guess I put myself in that category at times and would much rather play this one - where I build up my tiny tile town - than something like Chicken Foot or just plain old Dominoes.

Another one I was hoping to snag but again, it wasn't available. I have so little to go on with this one. Michael Schacht is such a great designer - again, I have to give the guy a lot of respect. He just builds great things and the art - oh the art - on this one looks great. Makes me smile which I suspect was exactly the point. We need a lot more of that in the world and games are a wonderful place to find a smile.

I'll be subscribed to it until I either get it, play it, or decide it's not for me.

I guess I'll continue on with another game I didn't get: Bunny Kingdom! I've watched it played a bit and believe I would like it. Of course, it surely has some solid design behind it and the components are quite lovely. Yes, the board is too small (I agree!) but tiny plastic bunnies! Adorable!

You draft cards (not thrilled with drafting in a game - I always think it too strongly favors the experienced player) and then play them. There's quite a bit of strain in that drafting choice as every card has a purpose and a place. That's the core of fun here I think. That and the overly (for some?) cute theme.

So I'll keep an eye on it and see if it turns up at a time when I'm weak willed and flush with cash. Like the next GEN CON.

I have a weak spot for a few types of games. First it would be war games. Any kind really. I rather annually think about buying and playing one. I am an avid adventurer into the annals of history. Reading a book on Truman right now - so excellent. I get much of that from my father and I too have passed it down to my kids. We all love history - so many great lessons to learn! And one of my earliest gaming memories is playing Panzer Leader. Groking that game at the age of 10 was a wonderful challenge. Not sure I ever *really* played it right during those early formative gamer years.

Second would be sports games. I often enough want a sport games and baseball is one of my favorite themes. I stuck out with Baseball Highlights: 2045 (see what I did there?) as it didn't feel like the real game enough for me. And it felt like there wasn't enough going on. I know, I know - a great many disagree! Remember: we all like different games different amounts.

But I'm looking for baseball games because my middle daughter is a big fan. She has some challenges in life - language is difficult, understanding speech is difficult - it's really hard for her. But she loves baseball and she loves going to games with dad. So this game is for her! I've tested it out with my brother and he thought it was fine. Me too! It does simulate a game. Might go on a bit too long - we'll see. But I like the simple resolution mechanic of the most dice wins and the break tie token is smart and straight forward to fix a tie. I hope to get a few plays in over the next few weeks.

Speaking of my daughter, my wife and her were trying to find a game that they could play together. At first they played ZÈRTZ which I think they found just ok. That was a game my wife and I used to play before we had kids. We liked it.

But in the Rio Grande room - and if you haven't stepped in there during GEN CON, you really should because they are so generous with snacks and drinks - they have several gaming tables. And they have their games set up and ready to go with folks wandering around kindly asking if you need help learning.

This game - I mean *this* game - is righteously fun! It was surely due in no small part to us being exhausted, but we sat around and played this a few times. It's such a simple conceit of an idea: big circle of tiles with colorful pictures, big wooden chickens with wooden tail feathers and a dozen tiles matching those tile picture face down in the middle. Flip the one tile that matches the next tile for your chicken on the circle. Then match the next one. And the next one. If you catch up to an opponent, jump them and steal all of their tail feathers. Simple? It's just a memory game, right?

Except old people like me don't remember very well. Or at all. Especially when they are tired. That adds up to loads of laughter! Incredibly fun. So much so that we went back into the Exhibit Hall and bought it. It was only $20 USD! A steal. We've already played it again. I guess I am a large man-child.

This is another game we played in the Rio Grande room. We started with the easy version of the rules (playing with my middle daughter again) wherein you just move around and try to get the most points with your hidden color. Then we played again with the second set of rules - adding in the cards. Then we played a third time with *all* of the rules - where you get extra points if you can guess the color of your opponents.

All together with all of the rules, it was actually very fun. You are moving about with full knowledge of who you are, but nobody else does. So that makes for some interesting moves. Do you just push ahead for points? Or do you push another color ahead (there are 7 in the full game) to make your opponents think they know your color? To me, this was pretty great. So we bought it too! Again, it was only $20 USD. Great components too.

And our final game in Rio Grande was this classic Spiel winner. I had only heard of it and never played. This one requires a surprising amount of math and isn't just a simple race game. You have to plan a bit to spend your carrots, try to anticipate where your opponents will be before they get there and generally manage your resources.

I didn't enjoy it very much I have to say. I can see the appeal and I can also believe it was intriguing at the time of its release. But for today and in the midst of the greatest gaming mecca in the world (well, at least in the US), it's hard to settle down for a game like this.

If I'm going to be racing, I'd rather be doing it with PitchCar or Thunder Alley. Or even better....

...this one! This was a game that was on my Must Have wish list here on BGG, but it was very difficult to get. I was coming down to the belief I'd have to trade for it somehow. But then, bless Stephen at Stronghold, they had loads of copies for sale at THE KHAN! How could I resist? I couldn't.

Plopped down my card, smiled and personally thanked Mr. Bounocore, and weighed my game bag down with one more.

Haven't played it yet, but am nearly 100% sure I'm going to really like it.

I had wanted Century: Spice Road when it came out. Big fan of Splendor (see below) and this looked like a similar weight of game with pretty components. Alas, when I saw it on BGG and then live at Origins in Columbus, I clearly couldn't play it. Color-blind friendly it was not.

Then suddenly just a few days prior to THE KHAN, this version was announced! Yes, it was spoken of months ago, but I thought it was not going to happen. Then here it is! Needless to say, I was interested.

When I got to Plan B's booth, there were several copies left - and the lovely play mat. Expensive! But I wanted it and was in a KHAN buying mood for sure.

I've played it now twice and it *is* a beauty. The play mat - love it. So smooth and colorful - great way to play the game. The game is a breeze. It's a quick engine builder - play cards and convert your gems (in this version) up and down in quality and quantity. I found the running very straight forward and with two players, there was only slight contention for the cards you wanted. I think it would be better with 3-4 players to strengthen this aspect. But it delivered as promised for me. Easy to tell the colors apart. Very nice components - felt just like a Space Cowboys level production. Excellent!

I bought this one without thinking. I'm a player of Splendor mainly in that it is lovely in production, plays super smart with very easy explanation, and is a lovely production. Yeah a lot that.

So here's hoping one or two of these expansions makes the game a bit sweeter for repeat plays, adding some new spin on the system, or just more of the system to spin.

Will try it out when next I play Splendor.

This was on sale at a booth - so I snagged it. I'd been eyeing it forever - since it came out. For me, Concordia is a brilliant design. The pinnacle of Mac Gerdts' designs - and I've liked almost all of his stuff. Still enjoy a game of Navegador or Imperial 2030 or Antike. But Concordia is my favorite.

This was a bit of a thinky buy. Did I really need it? Does the base game need anything? It surely does not. But I bought it just the same. Good price. Yep. That's my rationale.

And as a last but certainly not anywhere near the least purchase from the delightful folks at Oik! was this great tiny thrilling push your luck perfectly themed supporting up to 6 players and better for it dice-rolling quick filler game.

And no lie.

It's another game I've been seeking out since the first time I played it. I found it at THE KHAN and was so happy to have it. Played it nearly right away after that - a few times now. So much fun!

Which pretty much sums up my total experience for GEN CON. Delightful fun! Exhausting fun! I did pace myself better this year - not staying past my tired moments too far. Enjoying the food trucks, time with my family, playing games with friends, bumping around the Exhibit Hall, smiling so much. Wonderful. Looking forward to it next year!
