August is a slow month for me, after the gaming feasts of summer holidays and long days in the garden. Has anyone else done better than me for those truly unique games this month?

The instructions are, as always:

Quote:
Look at your plays for the month of August, and then check out the games and see if you can find any games where you are currently the solitary logger of a play for August (or if the other loggers were actually in the same game session with you). Use your common sense in order to make the search faster. Obviously things like Dominion, Magic, etc. will have plenty of people playing them. Note: expansions that only you logged are fine, feel free to add them as well.

Then share any comments you might have. Are we missing something? How could this happen? What is your opinion of the game?

August was quiet for me but there's always abstract gaming to fill the sultry* summer days. Saikoro (5 plays) is a very classic-feeling combinatorial abstract on a randomised board; move your piece around a grid of dice, with it only being legal to land on squares with a number equal to their distance from you, and the additional restriction that you have to stay within a certain distance of your opponent's piece. It's one of those very chaotic and opaque games that I don't tend to like so much - it feels as there's no real way of choosing between your opening moves, and the only point at which looking ahead and making decisions based on that becomes feasible is the point at which you discover the game is actually now decided already. I'm always willing to concede that the fault lies with me, but it's nonetheless unappealing.

And five games also of this, named after the secret lovechild of Gonzalo Higuaín and Sergio Agüero. I liked this rather more; build up a tree of your pieces in a way that offers support to squares allowing for future expansion, and also blocking off squares from your opponent's expansion. The limited number of piece layouts seem well chosen in an interesting way (I am reminded of the way that games of Onitama can acquire a distinct character when there is only move available that allows for diagonal movement) and the overall shape of the network building feels like a slightly more interesting version of Glüx.

Running with my policy of only playing games by unknown designers ...

5 vor 12 (aka Lucky Numbers) is a Michael Schacht game that feels somewhere between the Finito! and Keltis: Der Weg der Steine Mitbringspiel. You're picking up number tiles, putting them on your grid, and the first player to fill their grid wins. The placement rules are where the game is, and anyone who thinks its all random hasn't played enough times with people who will swap a new tile for an already placed tile ostensibly to "increase their options" but really just to annoy you.

Also played only by me...

Diabolo: another Michael Schacht game. Only my second play of this - 11 years after my first play. No rush for a third play.

Start 11! The Board Game: a Reiner Knizia tile + boardgame take on a traditional cardgame. A big hit for us.

Genial Spezial: another Knizia game.

Three games of this with Little Fish the Elder last month - all while his little brother was at a birthday party.

In the first game the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service was blown out of the skies by the Anglo-Americans. The second game saw the Luftwaffe interdict and destroy a RAF sortie while third time round a leand lease Hurricane and a couple of Yaks managed to get the better of the newer bf109 and a Fw190.

All very good fun.

Played a Raiders vs. Raiders match-up using the 'Cold Vengeance' scenario which went pretty well. At lest it went well for my opponent. My guys paid the price for poor weapons maintenance with plenty of jams, fumbles and other sundry disasters.

I enjoyed the game though and we're working to present a participation game at an upcoming small local convention.

One of the earlier pure abstract strategy games for Looney Pyramid Games, played on a standard 8x8 square board, and certainly a classic well worth playing.

Nice simple rules: Each turn, orient one of your pieces in one of the 8 directions, or move an oriented piece forward in the direction it points. A piece can capture an oriented piece, and can also capture a standing piece of smaller size. Captured pieces give points, and first player to reach some threshold (e.g. 12 points) wins.

Works for 2 or more players; I usually prefer 2-player.

Colors of Kasane is a beautiful, hand crafted, small box rummy card game from Japan. It's also damn near impossible to find a copy, not the first time you've heard that story here. It will, however, be reprinted soon, and so this will probably be the last time for a while that you will see Colors of Kasane on this list.

It's an interesting game that feels like a cross between Koi-Koi and Bohnanza, but playing well is quite dependent on the choices other players make. Other than that, the interaction among players is limited.

The Other Hat Trick is a 17-card deduction game for exactly three players. It's a print and play game, but the designer has credentials.

I am maybe one of three people on BGG who finds this game to be clever and fun. Every time I pull this (rabbit) out (of my hat), my partner rolls her eyes, but we have never failed to laugh while playing it.

There's some skill to play this abstract well, but it's a bit of a one-trick pony, so it's one of those games where once you know how it all works mechanically, you won't get any better at it over time. Luckily it plays very quickly and the rules explanation takes all of 2 minutes, A 10-15 minute filler.

This game has only two recorded plays this month and they are both mine. Last week I ran an event for this game at Gen Con. One of the recorded plays is that event and the other one is a test we did earlier to make sure the event was ready to go.

The scenario had four Federation light cruisers take on the B-10 Battleship.

Although this is an old venerable title, I'm the only logged play on BGG for August 2017.

It was a short game because we called it. There were six of us and we quickly formed into two factions of six. Our opponents managed to get hammered and lost most of their nobles at what should have been a reasonable chance siege of Lady Margaret. Then parliament was called there so we all attended and the next turn chased after their forces and attacked. We won, but it was Pyrrhic as five of our nobles got slaughtered, and there we all six sat with one or no nobles needing to claw our way back up.

We packed the game away.

Its a fine "filler" trivia game for people who like New Zealand history. Which is pretty damned niche in an international market.
