ABOUT GCL mb GELATO DIVISION mb SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

In honor of Labor Day here in the U.S., lets talk a little bit about how we spend our weekdays. I know we have touched on what we all do for a career in various previous GCL lists, but tell us about your job.

1. What is your job/career?

I had an extremely light week. I promise to do better next week!

8   Happy Salmon - I had to smile at how loud the game was.

N/A   Fuji Flush - After a ton of plays, I discovered that we've been playing wrong the whole time. The correct rules make for a way better game.

N/A   DEJA-VU x2 - This is probably the perfect memory game for me. Extremely quick, punishing of mistakes (you're out of the game if you make a mistake), difficult to keep everything straight, and rewarding of speed.

7   Boochie - This is a great game, both outdoors and indoors. I've played enough that the bean bag balls are broken - I now use the plastic rings when playing.

7   Arkadia - A yucata play. I have no idea how to play this well, but playing online isn't helping.

N/A   The Chameleon x7 NEW! - I discovered that Target picked up Rikki Tahta's Gooseberry! I'm not sure how I missed that. I anticipate that the role cards are going to get messed up, but aside from that, the game is superior to Gooseberry, mainly because it includes way more cards. This game is very open to user generated topics, but it's a lot of work to come up with your own cards. This is easy to teach and has gone down well with everyone to whom I've introduced the game.

My wife is not a gamer, so on some occasions when she will play, we play games that she enjoys. Bears vs Babies was one of those, as she is a fan of The Oatmeal and also likes Exploding Kittens. We also played Qwirkle and Quiddler.
Also got in plays of Carcassonne and Splendor.

Got together with my brother and some friends for a game night at a local boardgame bar - so some nice, beer, too. We played Evolution twice. First time for me, it's been on my shelf for a while. But it was a hit. I won the first game, but not the second alas.

Also got together with Alecc for a game of Holdfast: EastFront 1941-45. Very cool - my first play. Simple block game, but a lot of tension and really tough decisions. You talk about economic games - everything you do costs a resource point in Holdfast; do I spend an RP to rebuild a step for this block, or save it to allow me to move one more block?

9   ASL Action Pack #9: To the Bridge ! NEW!
 10   Advanced Squad Leader
6   Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook
7   Eye of the Crocodile King NEW!
 8   Forbidden Stars NEW!
 10   Firefly: The Game

On Tuesday I had a VASSAL game of Advanced Squad Leader against my Finnish partner JP. He choose a Pacific scenario where some Japanese try to break through a British/Indian defense in dense jungle terrain. I had the Brits and was unable to stop the yellow horde … although this scenario saw many heroic things on the British side (some of them might also be called “stupid”), in the end, I guess my setup wasn’t good enough for JP’s assault tactic.

RPG night was on Friday and again, one guy of our regular group was missing, so instead of continuing our campaign, we played a small one-shot adventure in which I played a Pathfinder Slayer character. The adventure was surprisingly good, and I totally enjoyed the guy I was playing: some kind of Arabian combat dude, and I used Machete (from the movies) as a reference on how to play him. That was really fun. “Zadim don’t talk, Zadim kills” was my catch phrase …

On Saturday we tried out Forbidden Stars for the first time. Now this seems to be another great game, although also one which needs some commitment. After we grasped the concept on how the game is supposed to be played, we started building, advancing and conquering, and this game delivers! However, getting a feel for all the units and upgrade possibilities surely needs more game plays! I really liked it and it has the potential of going up to a “9” with more plays.

Sunday was rainy and so Andrea and I put Firefly: The Game on the table, using a scenario of my own design – nothing fancy, just some kind of epic variant of the basic scenario with a little chrome around. We played for 4 hours and every minute was awesome. Given that this game is from 2013 and I bought it only this year, I wonder how I was able to survive without it!!!

The rest of my life was boring and eventless as always (which I still consider to be a good thing), and no new games entered my gaming dungeon (which is probably also a good thing … or not?)

I hope you all had a great week too! meeple

This is the week that was:

A relatively quiet week for me.

 8   Terraforming Mars TNC+
When I said I was hosting gaming, my wife said "I'd like to Terraform Mars with you guys" and so the four of us did so. It was my wife's first try of the corporate game and she got right into it. Jeff, who'd historically not done so well, managed to win, one point ahead of me dangit!

 8   Startups
We followed up our TM game with the full four round version of this. I crushed it again. We called it after three rounds because it was late and we were tired, but even if I'd scored 0 in the final round Jeff would have needed 23 points to pass me.

 5   7 Wonders Duel x2 ww
On Saturday we tried this out. My wife liked 7 Wonders when we tried it out at the gaming day early in August and I borrowed this from Jonathan. I like it better than classic 7 Wonders, and it's in contention to be added to the collection for pub play.

What's Going On:
Gearing up for fall: It's back to school this week, and despite having been in the workforce for longer than I've been in school, it has instilled within me a certain rhythm to the year, with the summer months being some kind of interregnum between the periods of being really busy.

Dinner with Bixby: Matt and his lovely wife were in town on a spontaneous trip and invited me to dinner at the Storm Crow, where we talked and laughed and enjoyed each other's company for over three hours. It was lovely to see them again.

Yellowknife: My mother in law was in town and she announced she's taking the whole clan to Yellowknife in February to experience the northern lights, dog sledding, and whatever other fun things there are to do in Canada's north.

No BGG Con for me: I thought long and hard about this, and I've made a reasoned choice to not go to BGG Con this year. Here's what I'm doing instead...
- Oct 6-8, I'm going to SHUX 2017, right here in Vancouver
- Nov 4-6, I'm going to BottosCon 2017
- January - I'm thinking of attending CascadeCon in Bellingham, organized by our very own O.Shane.
- February - assuming it doesn't conflict with Yellowknife, I'm going to Regina to attend Bixcon, Matt's private at home con.

It also saves me a week of vacation time. I want to bank some carry over some vacation into next year so we can take a trip (probably Europe).

August Gaming: Here's August...
 5   7 Wonders x2
 7   A Few Acres of Snow x2
 6   BANG! The Dice Game
8   Castles of Mad King Ludwig
 10   Combat Commander: Europe
 6   Insider x2
 6   Kingmaker
6   Merchant of Venus (second edition)
 9   Pax Porfiriana x3
 7   Secret Hitler x5
 8   Startups x14 NEW!
 5   Stone Age
 6   Taj Mahal x2
 7   Tajemnicze Domostwo
 8   Terraforming Mars x5
 5   Thurn and Taxis
 5   Tsuro x2
 10   Twilight Struggle x2

That's 47 total plays from 18 different games.

Howdy Gelati!

This past weekend I was able to go to a flea market at the local Board Game Cafe and sell a few of my games I've been trying to clear out. I didn't sell all of them, unfortunately, but I made a pretty good dent.

I also got to teach a friend of mine Legendary, so that was cool, and he liked it a lot. My son and I went back to Tables (the cafe) on Monday because it was kids free for Labor Day and we played Zombicide Season 1, first scenario. Man, that is one tough bear, way harder than Season 2. We got toasted.

I also helped a guy learn the basics of Tigris and Euphrates. I decided I do not like the newest edition of the game: the little tweaks and rules edits they made make it more confusing and just impeded my explanation of the game to him. I got him through it, however, and told him I'd be glad to play if we were ever there together again.

I also had my wife's cousin and her husband over from Hawaii this weekend, the same ones we went to visit for their wedding in April, and we got to play a bunch of stuff.

We got in 4 games of Codenames: Deep Undercover, which was hilarious (see spoiler box below) and Skull, which was hilarious as well. The husband just had no sense of when to not challenge, and he ended up with one tile right before his wife won the game. It was a great time all around.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
In Codenames, I had three cards on my list: Threesome, Stiletto, and something else that eludes me at the moment, but I had to try to get all 3 of them because the other team (cousin and husband) only had one left to place. I threw out "Dominatrix" and my wife immediately got Stiletto and the other one, but then rather than hit the threesome, she guessed "Trunk". We were all stunned, looking at her, and my wife says "What?! Maybe the person likes being locked in the trunk!" and we all lost it. It was hilarious.

In a similar note, during the game the husband had the word "Tubesteak" and "Wang" up on his list, and he gave his wife the clue "Penis"... To which she somehow guessed "Vasectomy" to which we all laughed and asked her what she thought that was because she is actually in a medical field.

Great, fun game!

I think that is about it for games played for me this week. Tomorrow is the first official meeting of my Pop Culture Club at school, in which we will play board games and talk comic books, movies, tv shows, etc. So we shall see how it goes. I'm hoping for a good turn out!

I've been writing this post off and on for about 3 days, so probably going to wrap up quickly at the end and get it posted!

GAMES

This is everything I played in August. It was a busy month! Most of the games were either with Tommy and his family or at a celebration (when we got back) for a friend who passed away 2 years ago. Oh! And Billy and I finally got to play our copy of Lisboa that arrived the week of MALCon (can't see why we couldn't fit that in before...)

CONVENTIONS AND EUROPE

The Myths and Legends Con went well. Our attendance was lower this year than last - probably a few things, like moving up one weekend, a writer retreat got planned opposite us, things like that. Jacqueline Carey and Marian Call were lovely, and our artist GOH Jim Humble made some new fans as well. Overall a very good year.

We tried out a new thing of putting everything on wheeled shelves, and that was great in theory, but unfortunately the moving truck opening was about 2 inches too short. So we ended up putting an empty shelf onto the truck and moving things from a full shelf (on the ground) to the one on the truck. Move new empty to truck, repeat. Made for longer loading and unloading, but overall was still faster and worth it to have the racks onsite.

We've got 3 (now 4) shelves we're using for the board game library, so this was a test run of that, and it worked well. So all we need is a taller truck for January (HexaCon, the gaming convention) and we're good to try again.

MALCon ran Aug 4-6. Sunday night, Billy ran the moving truck contents home, then caught a ride back to the con hotel, where we spent the night and then caught a ride to the airport in the morning.

We flew off to Chicago first, and from there to Helsinki, arriving on Tuesday afternoon. We found our cute little apartment, had dinner, and pretty much fell asleep.

Things that stood out:
Our little apartment had an all-tile bathroom, with no separation for the shower (just a drain in the floor) and a squeegee for wiping it all down after. I loved it.
Finland's first and second languages are Finish and Swedish, with Russian and English coming in third and fourth. Even though the convention presentations were in English, everywhere else (signage, the world outside the con) it wasn't always easy to find English. Having studied 6 languages (aside from English) I found it an interesting experience to be in daily situations, like the bathroom at the convention center, and be surrounded by people talking in words that I had no understanding.
Being that close to Russia made me a little nervous, but overall I felt really comfortable in the city and loved learning more about the country's history.
We also got to hang out with a fan group I'm in called the Brotherhood Without Banners and had some great conversations.
The convention arranged for everyone to have unlimited transit passes for the duration of the convention, and I became an instant fan of hop-on, hop-off passes. Their transit system was great for our needs and I was very happy with how we were able to get around.
I really liked Helsinki and would be potentially interested in going back.

==========================

Then on the Monday it was off to the Netherlands! We flew across the Baltic Sea (I spent a lot of time looking out the window) and arrived in the land of our potential new home. Taking the train from the airport, there were signs about what to do in case of flooding. Welcome to the land of reclaimed land!

We overdid walking (for me) on Monday, and for Tuesday I wanted more sitting and less walking. We found a bus/canal tour company and bought 24-hour on-off passes. They only went until around 6 pm, but we took two canal tours (same line) and one bus tour before they stopped for the day. It was one of those where you get headphones and plug into the wall and get snippets of info as you go around (it was gps enabled). I had an interest in seeing the canals all lit up, but wasn't sure if I wanted to sit around and wait, so we ended up taking a canal tour that left at dusk, so the canal lights came on while we were in the water. It was beautiful, and we got to see a bunch of really pretty views. Really glad we took those, and also grateful Billy has the income to allow us to enjoy such luxuries.

We still had time left on the 24 hour passes on Wednesday morning, so we did the canal route that we hadn't yet, and just enjoyed the morning.

For Amsterdam:

I learned that I have a real interest in learning more about history and architecture and the ways in which they intertwine.
I love the look of the old style Dutch skinny homes!
Skinny stairs are wacky though.

The tours all had a stop at the Central Station, so we headed in to get tickets to Tommy's place. There's a transit card that you can get, where you keep loading money onto it and you just swipe to get on and off trains and buses, so we went out of our way to get those for us, and they were super handy.

DEN BOSCH

We arrived by train (so cool) and met Tommy and the family at the station. Thus began our "here's what it's like to live for realz and get around with no car" journey and it was awesome! We walked around the center area of Den Bosch, which has still parts of the old fortress walls to protect the people inside the city from bandits outside. Tommy was very enthusiastic about the town, and it was fun to get caught up in his enthusiasm, which was only surpassed by his boys and their stories and questions. Normally walking gets difficult for me, but I didn't notice my sore feet until well into the evening.

We spent Wednesday evening getting dinner and touring and getting to their house - the boys had made a welcome sign for us which was on the front door! It was super adorable.

It all kind of blurs together (I guess I need to journal at the time), but Thursday Billy and I made a day trip down to Eindhoven to look around and ride bikes around the Hovenring. We got back to Den Bosch much later than anticipated (finding food and eating food in Eindhoven took way longer than it should have), and fit in time with the boys and gaming with Tommy before heading to bed.

Friday morning was a trip to the grocery, by bicycle, yay! Tommy and his wife loaned us their bikes and I borrowed a jacket (it was raining), and their oldest led us by bicycle caravan to the store. At one point, I looked around and realized we had both kids and neither parent. I guess we all felt pretty comfortable with each other! The grocery trip was a great success and it was so much fun to have the boys as our guides.

The family had places to be in the afternoon and we were headed to Paris, so after some gaming, we packed up and headed back to the train station and off to Paris.

Don't think Eindhoven is really my thing, but very glad we did the Hovenring because that is freaking amazing.
Tommy and his family are adorable and I love their food.

PARIS

I'm so glad that we went. We decided to just wander and not worry about museums or anything formalized this time, and that was the right decision. We found some yummy foods, and I loved listening to the language and trying to figure things out.

I did feel uncomfortable the first night, as we were walking around our neighborhood. it was pretty deserted and only people talking to themselves and weaving were out, so my spidey-sense was up a bit. Other than that, it was lovely.

What did I miss?
