Non--Fantasy Games with Individuals as the Units

Whew! Like that title? It reminds me of some horrible science article or Master's thesis title. Anyway, the gist is that you have a person or two or three as your unit(s). But no fantasy stuff, simply because that would balloon the list into the hundreds.
Games that give you that feeling like you're there are the ones that I'm really interested in.

Perfect example. Get soldiers with a few simple stats, outfit them the way you want, and kick some butt. Gives you a great "feel" for being in the grunt's shoes (although they are more like movie grunts in this game - lots of heroics).

Doesn't really feel like individuals. The units could just as easily be squads.

Cool game. I'd like to see a more streamlined version come out. You can feel the pain when you're shot.

Not the greatest game ever, but again, it does a nice job of making you feel like you're there killing bugs.

Fits the list, but it doesn't seem to give me that feeling like I'm there. Not sure why...maybe it's just a bit boring and clunky. I like the character stats, though.

One side is the heroic group of adventurers trying to shut down the asteroid, the other are the robots that are defending the asteroid as it plummets toward Earth. My favorite part are the rules concerning Sasha, the dog.

You can fight in a tavern or on the decks of two ships (a simplified boarding action). Plotted actions for simultaneous movement, this game is designed for more than two players.

Sequel to Swashbuckler, this also featured tavern fights and ship-to-ship boarding actions. Only the setting this time was science fiction (can you say, Star Wars without the licensing?).

From the back of box: "World War III. Every nation on Earth has been drawn into a global contest. What is different this time is the sophisticated technology of the tanks, aircraft, personal weapons, and particularly the nuclear missiles.
Last Battle is the ultimate simulation of immediate post-holocaust warfare. Tattered remnants of armies fight for survival in war-ravaged Europe. Cities have been leveled; entire armies have been destroyed; governments have fallen. Small groups of soldiers, separated from their chain of command and supply lines, rely on training and what remains of their sophisticated weapons to fight the last battle."

"Battle Hymn is a solitaire game of combat, adventure, and heroism in the Pacific during World War II. Using the revolutionary programmed paragraph approach pioneered in the Ambush! game system, Battle Hymn gives you a squad of American Marines and challenges you to fight your way through a variety of Missions against a deceptive and ever-changing Japanese foe. Unexpected events and innumerable tactical options offer virtually endless solitaire enjoyment, and the easily learned rules start even relatively inexperienced players on their first Mission quickly. Select you squad, arm them, and choose their Mission . Move your men out, advancing them as you wish, until something triggers an Event - until a peaceful walk in the steaming jungle turns out to be a fight for your life!"
